We are evaluating different SIP companies and are curious why we can't get full length SIP panels for roof without having to add roof framing? This adds additional labor costs and materials. Look forward to your response.

We exclusively make a polyurethane injected panel, which is a very different manufacturing process from EPS panels, which predominates the market. EPS panel manufacturing allows two pieces of OSB to be glued to a large block of EPS foam. In the poly-panel process, we're essentially building empty boxes, then injecting the foam mixture, where it then expands. This process just doesn't work well for "jumbo" panels. Keep in mind, the foam we use at Eco-Panels doesn't melt at any temperature, is VOC, formaldehyde free with zero ozone depletion potential. There's definitely a trade off and judgement call on what is most important to you. We like to see 3 points of contact for panels, so that still allows you to bump spacing out to 4' or 6' centers in many cases. Great question, hope that helps. If you would like to discuss it in more detail, please give us a call.

I was wondering how your roof panels fit together, now I know.

How do you feel about monopoly framing?

When done well, this can be a great option. There are often times we don't recommend our roof panels, especially when there's complicated roof lines that are all cut up. This type of framing / insulation is certainly a good option.

Talking about your timing for putting out a youtube video regarding your roof panels. I was just thinking about how you would install eco-panel roof panels. Do you use trusses or what?

We've had customers use trusses, yes. More often we'll see ganged conventional framing or possibly even LVL's to create beams. Some chose to wrap those in trim and leave them exposed. Solid exposed beams are an option as well. We only provide the design for roof and wall panels through. In cases where the roof framing isn't "typical construction" then an engineer may need to be involved to size beams to the proper load and span. Thanks for watching and for the comment!

Setting typical / conventional roof trusses on our walls is not a problem, and very typical. Honestly, SIPs may not be the best option for your roof, especially if you're building with a common truss system. SIPs walls with a raised heel energy truss and a more conventional means of insulating your ceiling space might be a good option.
