Today's issue is skipped stitches on single knit jersey, and I just figured out the problem: I am sewing on the DOGS (degree of greatest stretch) and my machine hates me for it. Finally solved the issue after changing needles four times (using schmetz jersey ballpoint brand new, just trying different sizes), checking timing, rethreading countless times, thoroughly cleaning the machine and lubricating, using a nonstick foot... to no avail. This fix... Add tissue paper to the bottom of the fabric (against the feed dogs). All along it was the stretch of the fabric. I found your channel when this video first came out and this is the first time I have needed to troubleshoot online for my vintage Husqie machine since then. Thats how much you helped me with this old machine. Thank you so much! Just in case someone can't find a solution from this video, try to slip some thin paper or interfacing into stretchy fabric.

After "countless" skipped stitch videos, it was one of your tips that did the trick (pun intended). For years I've reached for smaller-sized needles even on heavier fabric for their penetrating ability, without having a problem with skipped stitches. However, while using a buttonhole foot (the type that uses an actual button to set the stops) on pant twill fabric, I faced 2 problems at the same time. Braking thread and lots of skipped stitches . . . Lowering thread tension fixed the braking problem . . . and your wonderful explanation solved the more perplexing problem . . . Who says you can't teach new tricks to an old dog? Sir, Thank you !!

This vid has been a great help. My wife was struggling for about an hour with the stitch skipping problem and adjusting tension etc to no avail. I looked for help here and learned, change the needle (among plenty other good advice) and bingo on that tip, problem solved instantly. Just to say the material that was being sewed was a modern soft and stretchy waterproof fabric, walking trousers however really tough stuff virtually untearable. I was hoping to see you unscrew the bolt, but I do think I understand that you were talking about the Allen wrench reaching in from the left side and unscrewing it. I'm very mechanical so I'm not terribly concerned, but I'd actually never explored that area. I have a lot of sewing machines because I'm trying to start an upcycling business to support a missionary daughter, and one or two of those machines has been having some skipped stitch issues. So I will visit the obvious things of changing the needle and checking the bobbin tension and the top tension and such... But I especially was interested in the timing. I do know that you can utterly destroy a machine by trying to fix the timing yourself, so I might not be so daring on that, but my teen son is also very mechanical, and he has more confidence and courage and trying the scary things! So I'll probably give it to him to check out after watching this video. You didn't mention if, or how, using cheap thread affects the machine. Do you feel that it really matters if a person uses Gutterman thread versus using unless expensive thread from Amazon?! Do you have a favorite thread type . Also, do you feel that it's much of an issue to use say an embroidery thread at the top but a standard thread in the bobbin ? You seem like such a sweetheart, your wife doesn't really get mad at you for being in your sewing room does she? I sure hope not. But I know the joy is in the challenges of married life! I don't mind if my husband's and my son room, so long as he's not complaining about my mess! But your wife seems to be very very orderly with her sewing room! In fact, I'd love to see a tour of it. Im having issues with my brother pe770 embroidery machine. There's times it stitches out fine but when I try to embroider a name, it will skip so much and the thread will start to bunch up and break
This was very helpful. I am stitching upholstery for my vehicle and the machine started to skip. This video showed me that it's the spray glue and the needle is dull. I will clean and check the hook, and get some new needles. It might be a good idea to use the spray glue with the layer of sponge after all stitching is completed. I also like the way you have organised the thread and tools in the area. Perhaps you can let the audience know where you bought these that organise everything.

Thank you for very helpful video. I have Brother machine which is almost brand new but was skipping stitches. After watching your video I was able to adjust the distance between the needle and the hook and it fixed the problem.
Singer Brilliance Have changed needle, rethreaded, cleaned. Have been sewing for several hours without any trouble and all of a sudden the upper thread kept breaking. No damages with needle or plate.

I believe that is a side load bobbin, make sure the flat of the needle faces to the right into the throat of the machine and it is all the way up. The needle will thread left to right. Juki DNU-241H skipping stitches. 3:06. Love your videos.very helpful. I work with leather a lot. When stitching 3 0r more thicknesses it tends to skip stitches. Living on coastal Maine and tuff finding a knowledgeable repair person.
I'm using a Baby Lock Quilters Choice Professional, about 10 years old. The stitches occasionally skip when I'm free motion quilting, particularly when making a curve. I have just had it serviced and it's still skipping. I took it back to the technician, he free motioned for 2 or 3 minutes, and it worked fine for him. Back home, still skipping stitches. I'm using a new needle and Egyptian cotton thread.
Hello Carolyn, It is hard to say for sure with out looking at it but here are my thoughts and what I would look for. Sounds like it could be a difference in how it is being operated. If the needle gets pulled or bent away from the hook as it is sewing that could cause it to skip stitches . If your needle is to small for the thickness of fabric being used you can have needle deflection, which is the needle slightly bending before it penetrates the fabric. If it deflects away from the hook it could cause skipping. If your curves are to the left the needle would tend to be pulled away from the hook, to the right would pull it to the hook which could cause the needle to get caught in the hook and break. When free motion quilting, moving the fabric at the right speed, for the speed of the machine is critical, moving to fast can not only cause longer stitches but also pull on the needle as it is sewing and cause skipping and possibly needle breaking. I personally suggest never using anything smaller than a 80/12 unless sewing extremely thin fabric such as silk or something similar. For quilting I would recommend a 14 to 18 depending on the thickness of fabric. Also take notice when you are sewing if it feels like the needle id slightly pulling on the fabric, that is a sign of moving to fast for the speed of the machine. What size needle are you using?

Bernina 1630. I have changed the needle, rethreaded it, adjusted the tension on the bobbin which was loose and it will zigzag in small stitches but not larger stitches.

My machine is singer heavy duty model 4411 and it skip stitches. I tried cleaning, changing needle size and foot press tension but nothing worked. Apparently the problem was the needle position the adjustment screw is in front of the machine under the head cover it doesn't go in or out but it allows the needle shaft go in all directions when turning the screw. So happy i found this video many thanks!

Hi! I have a Singer 328 Style-O-Matic. I love it… it works for everything except quilting… when I put on the walking foot it skips either a lot or a little EVERY time! I’ve cleaned the machine, re-threaded, tried quilting, microtex and topstitching needles - all brand new)… Also I’m sewing over some appliqué and the background at the same time… it seems to do fine when I’m on the appliqué for the most part, but when I go back to the background (so just background, batting and backing) it skips like crazy.
I’d also love to see a video on a thorough service of a Brother machine similar to mine...BQ1350. I don’t know how to do anything more than take the needle plate and bobbin case out to clean. Thanks!
I have a juki DX7 and having trouble with skipped stitched when doing free motion quilting. I have been doing free motion quilting for a few years now and have not had so much trouble as now. I put in a new needle , rethreaded my machined and cleaned the bobbin area as well. But, still having trouble with skipped stitches.
Free motion quilting is a whole different thing, so I have several questions. What size needle are you using? Did you drop the feed dogs so they are not interfering with moving the fabric? Are you using a free motion foot? Does it skip when moving forward and backward? Does it skip when moving left and right?
I'm trying to sew a jelly roll rug, and my zigzags skip so bad. I tried everything, including changing needle. Nothing worked. I was using no 14 needle. But after watching your video, I'm convinced to buy 16, or even 18, I feel like needle size is my problem, needle couldn't handle thickness of layers. With other fabrics (thin layers) my zigzags are just fine. Thank you for giving me hope. Crossing my fingers.
Excellent video clip. You clearly show the position between needle scar & hook but not mentioned anything about how to adjust. If possible, please show for at least three different types of sewing machines for getting better idea about proper time adjustment. Your close up recording is excellent. thanks.
Adjusting timing has to be done with great care. If the machine is out of time you must first determine how it came out of time then adjust the assembly that came out of time.

I have a newer Husqvarna viking Emerald 116. I have this skipping problem. I changed the needle and properly installed. I made sure it was correctly threaded. When I tried to sew it was even worse. So I pulled the need a bit down and it got better but still would skip. Let me add the new needle was a universal needle.
Change your needle and make sure you have the right needle for the fabric and thickness of fabric you are sewing. You can use this needle chart to make sure your using the correct needle. odessasewingmachine.com/needle-chart
I have a Juki, and usually does fine. I was free motion quilting when the needle his something and broke. I replaced the needle and is now skipping stitches.
My guess is when the needle hit whatever it hit and broke apart the force pushed the entire needle arm up 1-3mm. Just enough to skip stitches. So figuring out how to adjust your need alarm is the key to solving your skip stitch issue. But then again you posted this seven months go hope you’re well past all of this.
Hello I have a Singer 400 W 1 industrial I could sew Cotton 2 thickness sews good with #46 thread with 88x #16 needle. Tried to sew 2 thickness of cotton webbing would skip. I replaced the needle 88X#18 sewed great. Thank you sir.
Janome MC200 QDC. I went over a couple of layers putting in a nylon zipper and it didn't like it , the needle hit the plate! 😪 Obviously I have changed the needle, I've rethreaded top and rewound a new bobbin. I cleaned out the machine . I've thoroughly checked inside the bobbin case, it hasn't damaged inside there just a tiny scratch on the plate up top but I'm still skipping stitches, more so when I reverse then try to sew forward again..
When the needle hits the needle plate it can push the needle bar up. If it did move the needle bar up then it is a timing issue and the needle bar needs to be moved back down. Here is a video to help you check your timing. ua-cam.com/video/hW-4OV4IWVc/v-deo.html
I have a old Sears Kenmore model 158.14100. I am able to zig zag stitch on cotton material but when I switch to nylon or any stretchy material it doesn't zig zag. Can you help with that? Your tutorials are soooo helpful! Thanks
You must be using a commercial machine. Not sure what that cord is your sewing but it sounds like a tough job! I hope you were able to figure out your problem.

I have a Singer 301 that is skipping stitches when I machine quilt through batting and 2 layers of fabric. I just ordered jean size 90/14 needles hoping this will help. I did this shortly before I discovered your video, and still have to watch the rest of your video.
Singer Graduate 6705. Can of worms was opened when trying to troubleshoot knocking noise after machine was dropped by my husband. It worked good, otherwise after the drop, but made loud noise. Several days of repairing one thing after another after he damaged one thing, after another while attempting to fix it having not sewing machine knowledge. He thinks it's timed right, I'm still not certain. It doesn't see right. It has decent stitching now, better than a wk ago, but occasional skipped stitches and it won't stitch on reverse. It moves in reverse, but doesn't catch the stitch. Light bulb also just blew up. Literally. Lololol. Prior to this all, machine worked flawlessly for 30+ yrs no problem.
I'm using a Singer Merritt 6620 C. Skipping stiches. I've re-threaded it several times. I've changed to a new needle. I'm sewing on several layers of cotton fabric. Ive tried 80/11 & 90/14
With several layers you need at least a size 14 needle. Make sure the needle is properly installed, lint is cleaned out. Hook needle clearance may be off.
I have a bernina 830 record electric I am using a stretch twin needle and I am trying to hem stretch pants. It will not sew both lines just 1. But when I sew it on a different material it works perfect
Stretch takes a special needle. Stretch fabric does better with ball point needles. The more stretchy the harder it is to sew. I recommend super stretch needles. You get some from Seeing Parts Online. Here is a direct link to them if you’d like. shrsl.com/4gt7a
I have a Singer class 7 possibly 7-38, made in 1932 its a twin needle but only using the left side to get machine trying to get it sewing correctly. Its skipping stitches after about 10 -20 stitches ,its fraying the thread and snapping the cotton usually after 20-30 stitches , Also the hand wheel gets jammed then I struggle to move it . When looking at the needles thread , there is fray and twisted thread gathered above the material and underneath some times, when I try to pull the material away I struggle to pull it , so I end up cutting the thread to pull the material out, I also notice the shuttle hook is getting jammed, buy the thread getting trapped not the bobbin thread only the top thread. The place where its jamming on the shuttle is right where the thread is meant to slip out over the back end of the shuttle where the gap is just at the back end of the shuttle and the shuttle drive, Some times the thread is jammed in there , and there is no gap, as if the thread was late coming over the shuttle or the shuttle closed early just at the point the thread was meant to leave, Or the thread is dragging on the shuttle some times and moving the shuttle prematurely backwards trapping the thread,I ain`t got a clue why this is happening and why its happening. I an trying to sew 1 mm soft leather together so 2 mm overall thickness with leather point needles and sharp needles , iv tried both and issues still happening, Things I have checked and done Replaced the needle twice and different needles, Checked for any nicks on the shuttle and race`that`s clear , Checked the shuttle is not sharp where it may be cutting the thread but has a good point to pick up thread, Made sure the correct gap between needle and hook,1/32 above eye of needle on this machine. Checked all thread path ways , loop guides and tension wheels,seem good Checked thread` its bonded nylon and thread fits in the needle groove nicely and the eye easily,but not to lose, Checked hole in the needle plate for nicks and roughness, Needles are placed in correctly and up as far as they can go into the holder. Checked new needle eyes and grooves with eye glass , all good, Shuttle hook does not have much play , So I am baffled to whats going on, The shuttle hook system is similar to a DURKOPP ADLER 205 type. Any advice you can give might be the fix to these issues,please.
I have worked on a couple of those class 7 machines, they are huge. I haven’t seen a double needle though. It sounds like there may be a problem with your tension assembly. Need to pull on the thread at the needle to see how much tension is on it. Those machines require a lot of tension.
@@sewingmachinetipsandtricks9079 Thank you for your reply , I already went as far as setting the tension up to where pulling on the needle thread to where its bending the needle, but still issue where it got snagged underneath material some where ,and snapped the thread One thing I did notice is almost looks as the thread twist tighter to where a loop is formed around the needle .then if not caught soon it frays and snags then jams underneath. its almost as if the thread is getting rubbed underneath and as it lifts back up above material, it twists rapping around the needle, Or I think after stitching 20 stitches or so, I am not sure if the thread is tightening or untwisting as its passing through the thumb screw (tensions). especially when turning the material 90 degree a couple of times, this seams to aggravate the issue worse, (Question)If the thread take up lever is out of time either to advanced or late what are the issues and signs of this. and how is best to adjust on the class 7 On longer stitch its skipping stitches more often, than the smaller stitch, I suspect the hook on the longer stitch is to advanced where its coming in to soon to the needle before the loop is formed big enough to go through it constantly, also if the hook is not going through the thread loop the thread could be squashed between hook and needle witch may cause it to fray or weaken if possibly. But if the hook does grab the loop to soon because the hook is to advanced on long stitch this may be contributing to the thread getting dragged on top of the hook and underneath the race at the same time , squeezing the thread between the two where its causing the thread to drag and tighten up witch then comes out the back gap to late and gets trapped there as well. I have noticed this before it jams as the hand wheel gets tight ` sometimes it frees loose after pulling a little harder on the wheel and other times the wheel just jams up due to the thread is stuck at the back where it was late coming up through the gap (Question ) So how do I adjust the hook on the class 7 so it comes into the loop made by the needle a little later, rather than just adjusting the thumb screw as this will just adjust the stitch lengths, not actually fix the stitch lengths to there correct size I want,for the longest setting, I need to adjust the longest stitch length correctly a little smaller at its longest setting. and the smaller stitch length a little bigger as that seams way to small,its cutting a line in the leather,
301A I'm having issues with good stitches looking like the manual pictures. It's like no matter what I do neither of them want to behave all of a sudden. I have changed needles, threads and cleaned, oiled, and cursed some too. I just want to be able to sew like they used to. Ugh..
I have a Kenmore. I was hemming jeans using the original hem method. Now I've changed needles, thread, and tying to sew a stretch jersey material. Machine skips stitches on both straight and zig zag. Horribly. Tried everything, but timing. Just checked to be honest, I think it was skipping stiches when hemming the jeans, also. Just checked timing and it looks like my needle isn't going down far enough for the shaft of the needle to come close to the hook. The hook barely comes near the eye of the needle.
singer 533 - I bought it not working and refurbished it, installing new gears and belts. I adjusted the hook timing and I had no problem sewing on normal fabric but I'm having a hard time with vinyl fabric - I'm using a leather needle and it's having a difficult time feeding the fabric through - I'm guessing it's an issue with it not feeding well but I'm getting holes in the skipped stitch, so the needle is dropping correctly every time but not threading on every stitch - skipping maybe once every ten stitches
singer 20ux143 industrial. I'm zig zagging a rag rug. I had problems and my husband replaced the race and bobbin holder. He got the machine to pick up the bobbin thread and its working now, but still skipping stitches

You didn't mention if, or how, using cheap thread affects the machine. Do you feel that it really matters if a person uses Gutterman thread versus using unless expensive thread from Amazon?! Do you have a favorite thread type .
Also, do you feel that it's much of an issue to use say an embroidery thread at the top but a standard thread in the bobbin ?
You seem like such a sweetheart, your wife doesn't really get mad at you for being in your sewing room does she? I sure hope not. But I know the joy is in the challenges of married life! I don't mind if my husband's and my son room, so long as he's not complaining about my mess! But your wife seems to be very very orderly with her sewing room! In fact, I'd love to see a tour of it. Im having issues with my brother pe770 embroidery machine. There's times it stitches out fine but when I try to embroider a name, it will skip so much and the thread will start to bunch up and break

My Janome 2030 qdc B keep skipping stitches change the needle and it still skips
This was very helpful. I am stitching upholstery for my vehicle and the machine started to skip. This video showed me that it's the spray glue and the needle is dull. I will clean and check the hook, and get some new needles. It might be a good idea to use the spray glue with the layer of sponge after all stitching is completed. I also like the way you have organised the thread and tools in the area. Perhaps you can let the audience know where you bought these that organise everything.

I believe that is a side load bobbin, make sure the flat of the needle faces to the right into the throat of the machine and it is all the way up.
The needle will thread left to right.

I'm using a Baby Lock Quilters Choice Professional, about 10 years old. The stitches occasionally skip when I'm free motion quilting, particularly when making a curve. I have just had it serviced and it's still skipping. I took it back to the technician, he free motioned for 2 or 3 minutes, and it worked fine for him. Back home, still skipping stitches. I'm using a new needle and Egyptian cotton thread.

It is hard to say for sure with out looking at it but here are my thoughts and what I would look for.
Sounds like it could be a difference in how it is being operated.
If the needle gets pulled or bent away from the hook as it is sewing that could cause it to skip stitches .
If your needle is to small for the thickness of fabric being used you can have needle deflection, which is the needle slightly bending before it penetrates the fabric. If it deflects away from the hook it could cause skipping.
If your curves are to the left the needle would tend to be pulled away from the hook, to the right would pull it to the hook which could cause the needle to get caught in the hook and break.
When free motion quilting, moving the fabric at the right speed, for the speed of the machine is critical, moving to fast can not only cause longer stitches but also pull on the needle as it is sewing and cause skipping and possibly needle breaking.
I personally suggest never using anything smaller than a 80/12 unless sewing extremely thin fabric such as silk or something similar.
For quilting I would recommend a 14 to 18 depending on the thickness of fabric. Also take notice when you are sewing if it feels like the needle id slightly pulling on the fabric, that is a sign of moving to fast for the speed of the machine.

Bernina 1630. I have changed the needle, rethreaded it, adjusted the tension on the bobbin which was loose and it will zigzag in small stitches but not larger stitches.

My machine is singer heavy duty model 4411 and it skip stitches. I tried cleaning, changing needle size and foot press tension but nothing worked. Apparently the problem was the needle position the adjustment screw is in front of the machine under the head cover it doesn't go in or out but it allows the needle shaft go in all directions when turning the screw.

Hi! I have a Singer 328 Style-O-Matic. I love it… it works for everything except quilting… when I put on the walking foot it skips either a lot or a little EVERY time! I’ve cleaned the machine, re-threaded, tried quilting, microtex and topstitching needles - all brand new)… Also I’m sewing over some appliqué and the background at the same time… it seems to do fine when I’m on the appliqué for the most part, but when I go back to the background (so just background, batting and backing) it skips like crazy.
I’d also love to see a video on a thorough service of a Brother machine similar to mine...BQ1350. I don’t know how to do anything more than take the needle plate and bobbin case out to clean. Thanks!
I have a juki DX7 and having trouble with skipped stitched when doing free motion quilting. I have been doing free motion quilting for a few years now and have not had so much trouble as now. I put in a new needle , rethreaded my machined and cleaned the bobbin area as well. But, still having trouble with skipped stitches.
Free motion quilting is a whole different thing, so I have several questions.
What size needle are you using? Did you drop the feed dogs so they are not interfering with moving the fabric?
Are you using a free motion foot?
Does it skip when moving forward and backward?
Does it skip when moving left and right?
I'm trying to sew a jelly roll rug, and my zigzags skip so bad. I tried everything, including changing needle. Nothing worked. I was using no 14 needle. But after watching your video, I'm convinced to buy 16, or even 18, I feel like needle size is my problem, needle couldn't handle thickness of layers. With other fabrics (thin layers) my zigzags are just fine. Thank you for giving me hope. Crossing my fingers.
If the zigzag works well on thinner fabric then the needle size may be your problem. Let me know if that fixed the problem.

Adjusting timing has to be done with great care. If the machine is out of time you must first determine how it came out of time then adjust the assembly that came out of time.

Could be several problems, the most common on this machine would be the needle bar getting pushed up after a hard direct hit on the needle plate.

I have a newer Husqvarna viking Emerald 116. I have this skipping problem. I changed the needle and properly installed. I made sure it was correctly threaded. When I tried to sew it was even worse. So I pulled the need a bit down and it got better but still would skip. Let me add the new needle was a universal needle.

My guess is when the needle hit whatever it hit and broke apart the force pushed the entire needle arm up 1-3mm. Just enough to skip stitches. So figuring out how to adjust your need alarm is the key to solving your skip stitch issue. But then again you posted this seven months go hope you’re well past all of this.
Hello I have a Singer 400 W 1 industrial I could sew Cotton 2 thickness sews good with #46 thread with 88x #16 needle.
Tried to sew 2 thickness of cotton webbing would skip.

The issue I am having is skipped stitches using a wide zig zag stitch on stretch fabric. My machine is the Janome HD3000
Janome MC200 QDC. I went over a couple of layers putting in a nylon zipper and it didn't like it , the needle hit the plate! 😪
Obviously I have changed the needle, I've rethreaded top and rewound a new bobbin. I cleaned out the machine . I've thoroughly checked inside the bobbin case, it hasn't damaged inside there just a tiny scratch on the plate up top but I'm still skipping stitches, more so when I reverse then try to sew forward again..
When the needle hits the needle plate it can push the needle bar up.
If it did move the needle bar up then it is a timing issue and the needle bar needs to be moved back down.

I have a old Sears Kenmore model 158.14100. I am able to zig zag stitch on cotton material but when I switch to nylon or any stretchy material it doesn't zig zag. Can you help with that? Your tutorials are soooo helpful! Thanks
I am using a 135x17 #188 needle for zigzag sewing 5/16" diamond braid cotton sash cord. I inserted new needle.
You must be using a commercial machine.
Not sure what that cord is your sewing but it sounds like a tough job!

I have a Singer 301 that is skipping stitches when I machine quilt through batting and 2 layers of fabric. I just ordered jean size 90/14 needles hoping this will help. I did this shortly before I discovered your video, and still have to watch the rest of your video.
Singer 401a…fixed my problem in the first 45 seconds of the video. The needle wasn’t inserted all the way into the needle clamp.

Can of worms was opened when trying to troubleshoot knocking noise after machine was dropped by my husband.
It worked good, otherwise after the drop, but made loud noise. Several days of repairing one thing after another after he damaged one thing, after another while attempting to fix it having not sewing machine knowledge.
He thinks it's timed right, I'm still not certain. It doesn't see right.
It has decent stitching now, better than a wk ago, but occasional skipped stitches and it won't stitch on reverse. It moves in reverse, but doesn't catch the stitch. Light bulb also just blew up. Literally. Lololol. Prior to this all, machine worked flawlessly for 30+ yrs no problem.

Ive tried 80/11 & 90/14
With several layers you need at least a size 14 needle. Make sure the needle is properly installed, lint is cleaned out. Hook needle clearance may be off.
I have a bernina 830 record electric I am using a stretch twin needle and I am trying to hem stretch pants. It will not sew both lines just 1. But when I sew it on a different material it works perfect
Stretch takes a special needle.
Stretch fabric does better with ball point needles.
The more stretchy the harder it is to sew.
I recommend super stretch needles.

I have a Singer class 7 possibly 7-38, made in 1932 its a twin needle but only using the left side to get machine trying to get it sewing correctly.
Its skipping stitches after about 10 -20 stitches ,its fraying the thread and snapping the cotton usually after 20-30 stitches ,
Also the hand wheel gets jammed then I struggle to move it .
When looking at the needles thread , there is fray and twisted thread gathered above the material and underneath some times,
when I try to pull the material away I struggle to pull it , so I end up cutting the thread to pull the material out,
I also notice the shuttle hook is getting jammed, buy the thread getting trapped not the bobbin thread only the top thread.
The place where its jamming on the shuttle is right where the thread is meant to slip out over the back end of the shuttle where the gap is just at the back end of the shuttle and the shuttle drive,
Some times the thread is jammed in there , and there is no gap, as if the thread was late coming over the shuttle or the shuttle closed early just at the point the thread was meant to leave,
Or the thread is dragging on the shuttle some times and moving the shuttle prematurely backwards trapping the thread,I ain`t got a clue why this is happening and why its happening.
I an trying to sew 1 mm soft leather together so 2 mm overall thickness with leather point needles and sharp needles , iv tried both and issues still happening,
Things I have checked and done
Replaced the needle twice and different needles,
Checked for any nicks on the shuttle and race`that`s clear ,
Checked the shuttle is not sharp where it may be cutting the thread but has a good point to pick up thread,
Made sure the correct gap between needle and hook,1/32 above eye of needle on this machine.
Checked all thread path ways , loop guides and tension wheels,seem good
Checked thread` its bonded nylon and thread fits in the needle groove nicely and the eye easily,but not to lose,
Checked hole in the needle plate for nicks and roughness,
Needles are placed in correctly and up as far as they can go into the holder.
Checked new needle eyes and grooves with eye glass , all good,
Shuttle hook does not have much play ,
So I am baffled to whats going on,
The shuttle hook system is similar to a DURKOPP ADLER 205 type.
Any advice you can give might be the fix to these issues,please.
I have worked on a couple of those class 7 machines, they are huge.
I haven’t seen a double needle though.
It sounds like there may be a problem with your tension assembly.
Need to pull on the thread at the needle to see how much tension is on it.
Those machines require a lot of tension.

I already went as far as setting the tension up to where pulling on the needle thread to where its bending the needle, but still issue where it got snagged underneath material some where ,and snapped the thread
One thing I did notice is almost looks as the thread twist tighter to where a loop is formed around the needle .then if not caught soon it frays and snags then jams underneath.
its almost as if the thread is getting rubbed underneath and as it lifts back up above material, it twists rapping around the needle,
Or I think after stitching 20 stitches or so, I am not sure if the thread is tightening or untwisting as its passing through the thumb screw (tensions). especially when turning the material 90 degree a couple of times, this seams to aggravate the issue worse,
(Question)If the thread take up lever is out of time either to advanced or late what are the issues and signs of this. and how is best to adjust on the class 7
On longer stitch its skipping stitches more often, than the smaller stitch, I suspect the hook on the longer stitch is to advanced where its coming in to soon to the needle before the loop is formed big enough to go through it constantly,
also if the hook is not going through the thread loop the thread could be squashed between hook and needle witch may cause it to fray or weaken if possibly.
But if the hook does grab the loop to soon because the hook is to advanced on long stitch this may be contributing to the thread getting dragged on top of the hook and underneath the race at the same time , squeezing the thread between the two where its causing the thread to drag and tighten up witch then comes out the back gap to late and gets trapped there as well.
I have noticed this before it jams as the hand wheel gets tight ` sometimes it frees loose after pulling a little harder on the wheel and other times the wheel just jams up due to the thread is stuck at the back where it was late coming up through the gap
(Question ) So how do I adjust the hook on the class 7 so it comes into the loop made by the needle a little later,
rather than just adjusting the thumb screw as this will just adjust the stitch lengths, not actually fix the stitch lengths to there correct size I want,for the longest setting,
I need to adjust the longest stitch length correctly a little smaller at its longest setting.
and the smaller stitch length a little bigger as that seams way to small,its cutting a line in the leather,
301A I'm having issues with good stitches looking like the manual pictures. It's like no matter what I do neither of them want to behave all of a sudden. I have changed needles, threads and cleaned, oiled, and cursed some too. I just want to be able to sew like they used to. Ugh..

I have a Kenmore. I was hemming jeans using the original hem method. Now I've changed needles, thread, and tying to sew a stretch jersey material. Machine skips stitches on both straight and zig zag. Horribly. Tried everything, but timing. Just checked to be honest, I think it was skipping stiches when hemming the jeans, also. Just checked timing and it looks like my needle isn't going down far enough for the shaft of the needle to come close to the hook. The hook barely comes near the eye of the needle.
If the needle is not going far enough down then the needle bar has probably been pushed up and needs to be moved back down.
singer 533 - I bought it not working and refurbished it, installing new gears and belts. I adjusted the hook timing and I had no problem sewing on normal fabric but I'm having a hard time with vinyl fabric - I'm using a leather needle and it's having a difficult time feeding the fabric through - I'm guessing it's an issue with it not feeding well but I'm getting holes in the skipped stitch, so the needle is dropping correctly every time but not threading on every stitch - skipping maybe once every ten stitches
singer 20ux143 industrial. I'm zig zagging a rag rug. I had problems and my husband replaced the race and bobbin holder. He got the machine to pick up the bobbin thread and its working now, but still skipping stitches

I have a Janome 6600 professional that just started skipping on the bottom of the fabric, at the same time the top thread looses tension as the needle goes into the fabric and then tightens up when the needle lifts back up.
