Utah backpacking--New catch & release state record Golden trout
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 чер 2020
- My nephew and I went on an early season backpacking trip hoping to catch some Golden trout. There ended up being a lot more snow than we had anticipated making it difficult to reach our destination. It was worth it in the end since I landed the new catch and release record Golden trout for the state of Utah.

That's awesome, going to be cool to see your name in the books! Get that framed no doubt!
They said it would be a while before the webpage is updated due to the virus but it's all good---I am content.
Congratulations, hard work = results,
Plus a touch of luck 😊
You're the man. Congrats, and thanks for the videos.
Well thank you, I appreciate you watching.
Man what a beautiful place to fish! Congratulations!
Oh yeah, I love it up there---gorgeous country.
Congrats my brother, you deserve it.
Different terrain than our trek to the Trout Oasis.
"I've always been a Gregory fan." Thanks man, that means a lot.
Gorgeous Greg
Loved the Osthoff shout out. Caught my first Golden on a Megascud.
Rich is a total stud. My two biggest goldens in mid 20's were both caught on the mega orange
Nice Video! Thank you for posting. Can't wait to see more videos 😍
Thanks for watching
The 3 people that disliked this video were the past record holders. Keep up the good work!
Haha, no wonder. I actually always get one dislike right off the bat. It's probably someone I trolled that subscribed just to dislike every video 😂
Congratulations!
Thanks water log. I checked out your blog again recently. Lots of good info.
Nice fish! Those are some healthy looking goldens
Hopefully you'll run into some significantly bigger ones where you are headed here shortly.
@@TroutHowler I'd be good with another 8-10 inches or so Haha
@@dysonmorgan7753 That would be sweet if you got into some of those 24 inchers. There's a guy from Utah that lives in New Zealand planning a trip there as well. He and his son are going the 9th through the 14th. His name is Mike---he seems super nice. Who knows maybe you'll run into him.
the boys are going to be jealous of that catch.
Haha, maybe it will motivate some to get off the couch more often
Dude nice job!!! Love the video.
Keep up the good work.
I lucked out. One of these days you and your eldest need to come
Congrats! That is a fishing goal of mine. To catch a state record.
Thanks, hopefully it's a goal you'll achieve.
Those were some studs! 😱 Congrats!
Thanks man. We lucked out
Nice fish too!😂
That's a beast!
Thanks man
I'm actually going to the uintas this weekend for grayling and Brook trout
Awesome bro. Goldens are good looking fish! I'm happy to have a family member with a state record. My deer ended up being 1 2/8" short of making the all time boone and crocket minimum score so at least one of us will be in the books. I'm looking forward to the video of our big brook trout adventure. You are the man when it comes to fishing and guiding us.
Our backpacking trip was fun. That will be the next video.
Great job man im still waiting to get golds and greyling off my bucket list
You'll get there eventually. There are several easily accessible lakes that have either goldens or grayling.
@@TroutHowler yep trick is making it up north i don't usually make it passed the boulder
Got my grayling off the list last year this year I'm headed up here was this a chain of lakes on the south east side 🤔
Ran into you in sportsman’s warehouse, been waiting weeks for this video! Congrats man!
Oh hey man, I didn't want to post it until it was official.
Love it
Thank you
Congrats Kendell - UDW just posted your catch to their facebook page!
Thanks Ken, I appreciate it
Congratulations!!! great video! I'm heading to the store to buy some bacon & cheddar dogs!
You won't be disappointed, they are fantastic!
Nice work !!!
Thank you sir
Congrats man!
Thanks Jason. Did you end up going to those lakes you were curious about?
@@TroutHowler Decided to wait on those and save the one for a backpack to include the lake further south that you mentioned. We did take a day trip to those grayling last Saturday. Unfortunately the meadow creek was empty, something must have happened last year. But the lake was super fun. The hike over was a killer, haha. But great views.
@@jasondietrich3664 Oh, that's a bummer about the stream. I sent a guy and his girlfriend in there last week. I haven't gotten a report yet, but I told them to try the stream.
@@TroutHowler oh I ran into a guy and his girlfriend who were camping below the lake, and we talked about our mutual disappointment in the stream being empty . So I bet that was them! Haha
Nice man! I have never caught a golden trout. I actually planned on going out this summer to try for one.
Be careful, goldens can be addicting
Yeah, I haven't done the cutthroat slam yet either. I was thinking of getting a 3wt or 4wt fly rod and seeing what kind of trouble I could get myself into on some small lakes and streams.
@@jeramyh9344 You can never have too many rods. I'm sure you'll have a good time going for the cutt slam
Damn you trout howler. Damn you to hell 😉. Well done sir. Nice handling of the fish. Another of your videos I am jealous of. See you out there...
Haha. Being a mountain bum has it's perks
@@TroutHowler I am also a mountain bum. We'll cross paths out in the middle of nowhere some time. Tight lines brother.
Thanks for sharing. Just got back from the Boulders and a little disappointed with the fishing right now. Fish Creek drainage lakes and Donkey Creek Lakes were lacking in quantity and quality. On top of that, went to the BB & L trailhead and 5 vehicles were parked there, while there were 7 (inclusive of a boy scout troop) at Blind/Pear, during the weekdays. Did manage (8) 14" brook trout, tubing at the inlet end of Fish Creek, Honeymoon and Beaver Dam. Lot of work though and 3 other lakes were a bust either mossed in or sterile with salamanders. Maybe the plateau next trip. Guess I'm venting but should of picked option B or C knowing 20 fish day in the 16" to 23" range are waiting. By the way, do you have to land the fish yourself, to qualify as a record in Utah...or does it even matter?
As you know Boulder can be hit or miss at given time. I didn't do so well either last time I fished that area. There are big fish in some of those lakes.
@@TroutHowler I've never had a bad day fishing on the boulder. I'll make you a deal. You take me on 1 fishing trip with you in the Uintas and I'll share 2 fly patterns specifically developed for use on the boulder that will change your fishing success there. Not that you need my help..haha.
@@nathanbarney1911 You wouldn't have appreciated the trip I just did there. The bushwhack to one of the lakes I fished was designed by the devil himself 8)
Hey I saw this video when you first released it and I didn’t realize where it was until you got the new title on the golden trout. But I love that lake and the surrounding lakes, I grew up in a town close to there. Let me know next you want to go, thanks for sharing.
There's quite a few good lakes in that area. I love it up there.
HUGE congrats brother, also, I know it's probably gonna be another 20 years before you think of a new pack, but next time you're in the market check out ULA Equipment. Great packs made up in Logan.
Thanks man, I'll keep that in mind
Where did you catch goldens at. I've never knew we had them in utah
It's not likely there's any left in there now. They were pretty much at the end of their life cycle. Back in 2013 and 2014 Utah got some golden trout eggs from Wyoming and stocked a handful of lakes. For what ever reason we stopped getting eggs after that. I've heard we were able to get some more eggs recently but I haven't confirmed that yet. For now the best bet to find Goldens in Utah is probably Echo lake in the Murdock basin
Just saw DNR tweet about this, no idea there were golden trout in Utah!
There's a few places. Utah lost it's source six years ago so there aren't a whole lot still swimming around
Is Wyoming not sharing?
Hey Tiffany
😊
Do the Goldens not have a way to spawn in that lake, or are there too many brookies?
I was told they successfully spawned once but we didn't see any that appeared to be from a different generation. The lake doesn't have very good spawning habitat.
@@TroutHowler I think that is a problem with many of those high alpine lakes, which is a shame not only because wild populations cannot get established, but also because there are no stream Goldens, which are even more beautiful than the lake fish.
@@fishingthelist4017 Yep, most lakes rely on stocking. Not all fortunately. There's a couple places in the Uintas where the goldens have been able to stick around in low densities .
Sick video man, I live in Utah and I literally cannot get on a big trout to save my life, PB rainbow is only a pound and a half. do you have any advice on how I could get a biggin to bite? I fish spinning gear so maybe that's my problem lol
Plenty of big fish are caught on spin gear. I was a spin fisher until I was 18 and caught quite a few big fish. Its probably just the locations you are targeting. Get on the Utah DNR webpage and look up blue ribbon fisheries. If there's a place that has a slot limit where you can keep one over 22 and a couple under 14 then there are likely big fish there. dwrapps.utah.gov/fishing/fStart wildlife.utah.gov/blue-ribbon-fisheries.html
@@TroutHowler Thank you for your response, In terms of fishing high-uintas do recommend fishing a place that was stocked 3-5 years ago, or would you target lakes that have been more recently stocked? I've made one trip up there before to a lake that was stocked 3 years ago but I ended up getting skunked, are there any identifiers that you look for to tell if a lake can sustain life through the winter?
@@rogersauvageau1265 I typically target fish 4 to 6 year range. That interactive map has info for some of the various drainages in the Uintas but not all. I would recommend you spend some time using both that map and the stocking schedule/history
@@TroutHowler ok thanks for the advice man! Love the vids hope to keep seeing content from you
Hello which lake is that ?
Mumblemumblemumble Lake.
What is your incentive to post on UA-cam? Not hating, just curious.
What is the incentive for you to comment on my video? Not hating just curious
Seems to be touchy subject for you bud?
@@flyfishing8017 No, just making a joke of your odd question
Going to new places, catching new fish, and a little bit of revenge on waters where I got skunked in the past. The UA-cam part is to document the adventures. Wait...you weren't asking me!
@@TroutHowlerhaha got him 😂
