  • Testing out a Diesel Heater For Ice Fishing!
    In search of an alternative to propane heat for ice fishing, Daryl tests a diesel heater to see if it will withstand the extreme cold, rough terrain, and hard use of being used everyday guiding or fishing in Canada all while catching Lake Trout on Lake Athapapuskow at Bakers Narrows Lodge Manitoba.

    Great in depth video. Picking up the same hub this weekend and I've been eyeing the same heater. Exactly what I needed to see, thank you!!

      Awesome, thank you! I did notice online the heaters were $100 off regular price right now or atleast the other day

    Great video, not too noisy for videos. Once the temperature stabilizes in the tent fan speed decreases and it’s not bad at all.

      @darylgilbertoutdoors  3 дні тому

      Thanks, true it did lower the fan speed once up to temperature and then I decided to crank it up to 35c to see what would happen so it increased again haha

    Great video! A few things I’ve learned from researching diesel heaters:
    Have a CO detector in your tent, especially when you have the unit inside.
    Never abruptly stop the heater, it needs to go through a shutdown process.
    Wrap the exhaust with ‘manifold’ wrap, makes it touchable and safe.
    Have the exhaust on a downward projection to stop any precipitation going into the heater and causing carbon buildup.
    For the cheaper units, put a piece of plastic wrap inside the gas cap and tighten it down so you don’t get leaking diesel from cap while driving.
    For sleeping, I would put the unit outside and run both the hot air blower and air intake hoses running into the tent, safer than having a possible leaky exhaust inside.
    Use “seasonal” diesel, which is treated. Or if you have summer diesel, use an additive.
    Dry heat is sooooo much better! And no open flame burning your sleeping bag.
    Thermal sleeve was an awesome idea! Nice unit with good gas cap and exhaust out the side, not to bottom.
    I never cover my ice holes, someone could step in one. But I also fish in more heavily used areas.

      I explained the shutdown process in the video where I turned it onto the cool down cycle, I also mentioned having a co detector inside. There’s no foot traffic where we are it’s a 12-18 mile run each way so it’s all sled traffic. By the time someone comes out they are frozen over

    I run my CDH outside with two insulated pipes circulating the air in the shack so it's heating already warm air. Battery inside the shack and the screen extended so I can control the unit from inside as well. Pulls about 3 amps on high.

    I use a milk crate to put my heater on. The propane vent is 12” off the floor which is the same size as a milk crate. Plus you have something to store the battery and hoses in!

    I did 2 nights in the ice and needed 2 brand 100ah lithium batteries and used 3 tanks of fuel for the same heater. I had to walk back to the truck to get the buddy heater for the rest of the day. Basically 100ah for maybe 20 hrs but they work great.

      I haven’t used it more than 10 hours in a run as that’s our length of guide days. I think they all seem to eat battery power fairly quickly but that’s the only downside really

  • @kennethklatt67
    @kennethklatt67 5 днів тому

    Propane puts out a ton of moisture it causes alot of condensation which will cause corrosion where you can’t see the little bit of noise is more than worth it 👍🏻 plus your shack won’t be frozen closed when you go to use it next time

    Great video & review Daryl !
    I know you mentioned it but if you had the unit sitting on a milk crate it would be up off the ground & the exhaust should run straight out the propane door……
    I think you mentioned it was-15 that day but what has been the coldest day you’ve had it running & how did it do……
    thinking could u not run a bungee cord from the end of the air duct tubing and hook it up to one of the tent poles/straps……🤔

    Hi. Great video. With respect to the noise of the heater could you not set the heater up outside the shack and run the heat into the shack? Keep the battery inside as well. Just a thought. Love your videos.

    • @darylgilbertoutdoors
      @darylgilbertoutdoors  7 днів тому +1

      @@ShaunClark-c2q you could, but on cold days the heater won’t be able to produce enough heat as it’s pulling extremely cold air and trying to warm it

      @@tomreilly9295 our diesel fuel sold at gas stations after September usually has an additive already in it but you could definitely add some antigel if it’s going to be extremely cold. You can adjust the wind speed with a remote up to 5 settings
