    It's funny when people say the film industry doesn't have a race bias... Did people forget a sony executive email hack reviled a executive saying casting Denzel Washington in this new action movie was a bad idea because a film with a black lead can't & won't sell overseas... D.Washington can sell movies people will go to a movie with him in it... The Sony executive didn't see Washington's resume but his skin color...
    THATS THE PROBLEM PEOPLE NEED TO UNDERSTAND.

    • @krislanc1239
      @krislanc1239 8 років тому

      that's not about race if you look at the numbers movies with black leads don't sell in international markets, George Lucas was saying this when he was making red tails and people wouldn't give him money and they were right the movie didn't do well. Hollywood is about making money first and its been proven that rarely films with black leads make money, its all about the💵💵

    • @a_real_one2000
      @a_real_one2000 8 років тому +12

      +kris lanc Your right hollywood is only about making money... Red tails failed because it was a bad film not because the leads was black but the story was trash (good actions scenes). The equalizer did 90mil international sales. "taken" (2009) did 81mil international sales. I feel a solid movie can be sold to any audience. The race of the leads don't matter. Making a film is expensive & the sure thing always gets funding.

    Also point should be made about whiteness of indie movie scene and Sundance in particular. Why do white indie filmmakers cast predominantly white actors in any roles? Average Sundance movie is a drama about middle class white people. Why dont they do color blind casting? I guess there is major issue at play i.e. segregation of american society - look at Oregon, NYC, even Brooklyn - white people in one place, black people in another place. And when indie filmmaker doing his (her) debut movie, it is often about personal experience and things and people you know and these fillmmakers (if they live in Oregon) only know other white people. Its ike situation with Lena Dunham.

    I'm all for diversity, but I hate when they retell a story and swap the race, that's not helping that's lazy. Having writers of color that are good at their craft that can produces stories that don't fall on stereotype, would be a great advantage. I as a person of "color" who's hispanic I cringe when I see hispanic/latin misrepresented. What's the point of including diversity if they're reinforcing stereotypes

  • @goodlivergang6403

    I think one of the issues is that Hollywood executives seem to be separating the audiences into categories. I think one big step toward equality in Hollywood would be to look at everyone as equals with different stories. I don't think that will happen unless there's new blood in Hollywood.

  • @KelliViti

    It is certainly ableist, I am a singer / actress wheelchair user from birth, & we are nowhere in a conversation about diversity!! We are the largest minority, cutting across all lines of distinction ethnicity, age, gendar, sexual orientation / gendar identity, & social strata, yet we are represented at a rate of 2 percent. Cripp Face , or Crippin up is a common & accepted practice. These roles are highly coveted. Done well, ( debatable, given that no one on the project is actually disabled ) career advancement, awards, & recognition are garanteed.
    I am now almost 49 years old, I auditioned in NY for 15 years. In that time I cannot count the number of stairs I climbed, dragging my wheelchair behind me, to audition for the role of a wheelchair user! An audition, commonly held on the third floor of a building with no elevater!! Me, showing up, to the utter shock of many a casting director. We aren't even supposed to get to, the table, let alone take a seat! Finally, you would be forgiven for thinking that all PWDs are white, if you just looked at the miniscule, poorly written, representations offered ( except Speechless ). Speechless is the first to really get it right. INTERSECTIONAL ISSUES REMAIN, but more representation is needed in general, before we can even have that discussion!
    I was never even considered for roles where disabilty was not the focus, Teacher, Neighbor, Secretary, Boss, ansilary character roles that make up a community.

      It's a 2004 Alexander Payne film where Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church take a trip to wine country, and drink wine and ruin their lives for 2 hours. Everybody went NUTS for it during award season (and went APESHIT when Paul Giamatti wasn't nominated for an Oscar) but I can't stand Payne's films. This conversation is the most productive one among previous THR talks! It would not have worked if the hosts cannot relate to what minority movie makers have experienced in their life. Everyone has the right to talk about their experiences because they are real to us. Don't you tell me that racism doesn't exist in Hollywood or anywhere in the America because the oppressed know where they stand and some of them wake up mad. The reality of minorities is a continuous yet ever-changing shadow of history. As we demand for change don't forget that things aren't going to change over night. It will take years, decades, or longer but don't give up.

  • @ageeblue752

    Yes, Hollywood is racist. Black people have come a long way, I love it and I respect that. Now, where are the Latino’s, where are the Mexican´s nominations for the Oscar? Where is a real Mexican actor/actress whose won an Oscar a Mexican with real Mexican roots and ancestry in Mexico. Mexian nomination which led to winning an Oscar. I love people form the UK, yet there’s more of them on the Oscar winners than Americans, according to me, correct me if I’m wrong please. This is like, for example, Billy Porter said on Hollywood reporter: ¨I can’t play a straight character but a straight actor can play a gay man? ¨ White people playing Asian ¨yellowface,¨ Mexicans ¨brownface, black people, ¨N¨ face, as some biased called it. The inequality is vast. I said ¨long way¨ on my first sentence, well, in human history, it shouldn’t had been so ¨long¨, we should be thinking and saying: it is a NOW way for our present.

  • @Tebigong101
    @Tebigong101 8 років тому +5

    I'm gonna keep pointing this out and hopefully someone will explain it. Why women AND minorities or women AND people of color.
    I bring it up, because in most instances when something is about "a woman" or someone is talking about women it's a white woman they are referencing like the women nominated for Oscars this year. Also, when discussing an issue like gender pay equity and how women only make 79 cents on the dollar that's what white women make, most women of color depending on their specific race generally make even less.
    So when the Academy starts to bring in more women, what kind of women are we talking about. Is it going to be all kinds of women or are women of color going to be lumped in with men of color and continue to be marginalized.

    • @Tebigong101
      @Tebigong101 8 років тому +1

      Sad thing is, the Sony hack showed us, no, it confirmed what many had been saying already that someone black at Denzel's level wasn't beyond the conversation about whether they would play well in foreign markets.
      Also the question no one seems to be asking, how or why would Asian countries that don't have many or any black people develop a negative perspection or prejudice about black actors, and not white actors who are objectively just as different.

    • @Tebigong101
      @Tebigong101 8 років тому +1

      Okay, while it's sad that he had to write his pilot about white people there is also this, an Asian man was able to write white characters, like Shonda Rhimes and other writers of color, well enough that it resonated with white audiences. So, why then is it so hard for white writers to write characters of color with that same resonance.

    • @macmac9371
      @macmac9371 8 років тому +1

      +Tebigong101 first the industry will try to add women and women of color with equal wages as men. They may past a law that assess the value or the employer or compares there relative values. It a hard argument as acting is like sports, talent and performance is related to value or pay ... Meaning a male NBA player makes more than a female WNBA player because of the demand, both males and females equally support the NBA. Justifying the lower pay for limit WNBA wages due to less demand. So the film industry could argue the same scenario males in bring more audience when franchised content is not involved.
      Second Denzel is great but agent and exces control opportunities. Can he add value was the Sony question
      The Asian counties have negative views of blacks by what they see about blacks in film & tv. It's a cycle

    • @macmac9371
      @macmac9371 8 років тому

      Here's another one regarding rape:
      A forces sex on B=A (rapist)-B (victim)
      A offer sex to B, B agrees= (AB)=(C)onsensual sex
      A forces sex on B, B out powers A and forces sex back.... This does not equal reverse rape..... Maybe BDSM
      But reverse rape is not a thing ...lol
      There's the equation for him.

    Ava DuVernay was called to make Black Panther and she left :( I was like "NOOO". Right now genre films are ruling the box office, and the small directors studios are picking up to do the big films have at least have a Sci-Fi/Fantasy on their portfolio.
    I would love for color people and women to start doing more of those genre films, instead of doing only straight up dramas over and over again. It is a very ignorant thing to say by the moderator to degrade Black Panther because it is a superheroe film instead of a "serious" film.
    Guillermo Del Toro is a Latino but his voice is not into making dramas about latinos, his voice tells him he needs to do monster movies, sci-fi stuff, and still every time you watch a Del Toro film you can say it comes from him and no one else.
    Who knows if right now there's a black kid somewhere who loves Captain America, and Iron Man and Black Panther and when he sees that Ryan can make a movie like that he will feel inspired to do it too?
    Ryan Coogler making Black Panther is the best thing that could happen to him. Follow Spike Lee's career? No. please, No.

      Robin Takundwa Thanks man! I really think that we should strive to have a Black James Cameron, a Black Christopher Nolan, A Black Ridley Scott, instead of another Spike Lee. The same for women.
      Jennifer Kent did The Babadook and that movie is a amazing as a movie not as "a women movie" or "a movie made by a woman" is just a good movie overall. And I'm dying to see what she does next. We need more women and people of color doing genre films. James Wan and Justin Lee are kicking it! more should follow that example.

    Sorry but 1 asian oscar winner? you are clearly only talking about actors. You are discounting the work that asians have done and won Oscars for and it makes you look bad.
    Yup Brynner, Ben Kingsley, Haing S. Ngor, Miyoshi Umeki, Ang Lee, James Wong Howe, Peter Pau, Richard Chew, Tom Cross, Timmy Yip, Sanzo Wada, Bhanu Athaiya, Emi Wada, Aiko Ishioka, Dimitri Tiomkin, Ryuichi Sakamoto Cong Su, Tan Dun, A.R. Rahman, A.R. Rahman Gutzar, Reuse Pookutty, Doug Chiang, Hayao Miyazaki, Akira Kurosawa, Teinosuke Kinugasa, Hiroshi Inagaki, Chris Tashima................Want more? there are more and if there are more, it's because of the great work people do for films, not just actors. Eat your one sided statement, carry on and do better next time.

    I was told almost 50 years ago by Chris Albertson, author of the biography of Bessie Smith (jazztimes.com/features/tributes-and-obituaries/jazz-and-blues-historian-chris-albertson-dies-at-87/) that having been in meetings I would never attend and having heard conversations I was unlikely to hear that "the industry" has an agenda of "perpetuation of images" designed to maintain the status quo. Will that change over time? Everything changes over time. The questions are, "How much time does any one of us have? And, are we willing to wait?" If you are waiting for massa to pat you on the fanny and bring you into the big house, there will likely be a price to pay. What did Public Enemy say? Burn, Hollywood, Burn!

    I agree with this 100%. The only thing that i think was a little insensitive is the comment of being a "White dude who wants to be a white lady" because that's singling out another minority group of individuals who are trying to fit in and feel welcome more than any other group of people in, I can guess, the world.
    Other than that, in general, I completely agree that it's sad that the Academy is filled with old white men who base all the nominations on what old white men like. It's going back to the question when casting - does this character have to be a man? Why can't it be a woman? And why does this man have to be white? Why can't he be Asian, Black, Indian? If the only quality of the character is that he has to be a man what is stopping casting directors from hiring someone who is an amazing actor in a minority race? We shouldn't be casting people just because their a minority the same way we shouldn't be casting them just because their white - it should be based on talent.

    Only Two Asian Males have won Best Actor in a leading role screen legend Yul Brynner and Ben Kingsley, but the late Dr. Hiang S. Ngor won for Best Actor in a supporting role!
    Great Artist of color have more opportunities in television or online streaming services. Paradigm shift will take time to occur! Bruce Lee was the last major actor to appeal to all ethnicities, he achieved the American Dream of making it big in both television and cinema!
    Every culture has heroes, it is just the matter of giving them the right presentation to appeal to America's diverse population and diversifying the voters of the award giving body. Not to mention verify that person has watched the movies given to them to consider for making nomination in each category!
    Otherwise the awards prestige diminishes and lacks credibility!
    Great performance or excellence in writing exist around the world, but the Academy needs to expand its scope of artists to contend high profile awards!

    I hate it when people say "Oh we have more Chinese viewers and the market there is growing so let's cast more Asians or the majority of u.s. population is white so let's cast more whites." What it essentially means is that they cast Asians for Asians, whites for whites, blacks for blacks and Latinos for Latinos. Why do we have to act for our own race? Why can we act for everyone? I'm an actor and I'm not acting for Asian viewers only. I'm acting for every single individual on earth to enjoy and get something positive or worth remembering from my work. I know this for sure that if I give a performance that speaks to people's hearts they will like me and watch me no matter what I am. The system and the process of casting and making movies in Hollywood is so messed up and designed to cause racism and segregation. It's about who we are as humans. It should never be about what we are. They need to cast whoever is the best, not based on color. Color blind casting is the way to go as far as casting goes but People need to wake up and realize that we are all human so when we make movies we make movies for everyone and the roles should be able to be played by every color. It's so easy to understand.

    This was a great video once again from THR. But I have to say the guy who made Dear White People . . . I disagreed with a lot of what he said. He said it's impossible for a black person to be racist against a white person by the textbook definition. That's wrong.
    racism
    noun rac·ism \ˈrā-ˌsi-zəm also -ˌshi-\
    Full Definition of racism
    1
    : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
    2
    : racial prejudice or discrimination
    So yes, black people can be racists. Also he acted like he was discriminated against because he had trouble getting funding for his movie. But the movie was called Dear White People. Imagine if it was called Dear Black People or Dear Gays etc? It's an incendiary title and it's supposed to be. So he shouldn't be suprised if some people don't want to be associated with it. There is a reason why most studios make "safe" movies. Plus the movie deals with race relations in the US and how many people outside the US would be interested it that when he was told his target audience would be outside the US?
    Also I was VERY disappointed with the fact there was no Latio present. They are the biggest movie consumers after whites and yet there was 2 black guests and an Asian? I thought the interviewer was great. He let everyone talk and added some interesting comments. I just don't think that particular guest added much because it was obvious he was prejudice against whites.

      Where did you get that definition, generally racism is define as a racial group institutionalize in power over another. That's the definition their using, the majority in terms of race is empowered over another the minority, minorities can be racist because they don't have a established institutions. There is only one outcome live a negative multiples by a positive equals only a negative.
