I just love the Wall Street aesthetic. In my opinion, characters like Gordon Gekko, Patrick Bateman or Jordan Belfort are some of the sharpest dressed men on the silver screen. It doesn't matter if they do horrible things, their style is still enviable.
Of course you can look like Gordon Gekko if you have his kind of money, stylist, power and good looks all mixed up together. Gordon Gekko is a character in a movie and as we know, movies are fantasies. I've seen very high powered executives and even the very best of them are barely presentable. Michael Douglas was just such a good actor that he made us believe that somebody can really look that good and be devious at the same time. When he said that "greed is good", we believed it and thought that it is really ok to be ruthless (as long as you look fabulous while being one). Really, in our time and age, Image is everything !
if Michael Douglas was an actual Wall Street tycoon he would be immensely successful
Money, stylist, power, and good looks aren't necessities to achieve this though.
You don't need to be rich, or wear expensive suits.
You don't need someone else to do something for you that you can do yourself.
You don't need to be the most attractive person alive to look good in a suit.
And position of power basically doesn't matter to how you would physically look in clothing.
This man is right ... mostly.
The character of Harvey Specter is also a great style example of power.
Thanks for the input!
It's a classic style that in one variation or another goes all the way back to the 30s, if I'm not mistaken. It's an old money look that in the 80s was big with the newly rich.
The power is in the details.....
Great question - treat it like a costume - any advantage is an advantage - leverage, experiment, and do what makes you confident. And never bet on a three legged horse.
Thank you sir - the best thing you can do is pass my vids on to help others :)
Good, glad to see you here.
Great point Wayne!
Good point - have heard this many times from finance professionals!
Good point!
Thanks Jim!
Thank you!
We're doing a whole series on ties this Fall!
I like to wear these kinds of clothes even though I am a high school teacher. It sends the message that I am in charge of this room and your lives for the next 45 minutes. It also, believe it or not, helps to convey my points in the courses that I teach,. Those would be government and economics,
Very, very nice job in this video, I really like it :D. Gordon Gekko IS one of my fictional heroes and I loved the clothing he worn and the message it represents. I've seen a couple of contrast coloured collars on Ralph Lauren black label (hugo boss also sells them in their autumn/fall 2013 coll.) and I really wanted one, but I'm glad I didn't because it draws a bit too much attention. I could pull it off on work, but unfortunately.. I'm not that high on the ladder yet to justify it to myself
Where did they say that?
Fun fact - the American Film Institute ranked Gordon Gekko as the 24th greatest film villain of all time.
Not someone I'd want my clothing associated with, despite Michael Douglas' amazing performance.
FYI Alan Flusser designed the clothing for Wall Street 2 and only 2. Alex Kabbaz was the designer for Wall Street (1).
Which suits/outfits in particular?
You’re entitled to your opinion. I worked in the finance industry and that is how men dressed. It was not a costume.
Do you know where this comes from?
Interesting commentary. The more I think about it, the more I agree with the complete look. However, I could see incorporating smaller elements of this. For example, where your a standard out with the the exception being the white cuffs/collars with some simple cuff links. In fact, I follow that logic with most of my stuff...one or two strong elements that get me noticed but that are not too ostentatious.
You've been on it from time immemorial. Kudos Antonio
Cool - sounds like we need to do a vid on footwear!
this was standard on Wall st back in the day. totally dressed down today. Power look
Your information is so well presented you encourage better dressing. Even those of us who worked in better men's clothing and now retired and maybe too relaxed in our dressing will get a clue and "dress up" a bit. Thanks for all you do. Jim not Nigle
i love this channel! always looking forward to see a new video. you helped me a lot! thanks you.
I like wearing the shirts with contrast white collar. At times I will wear them along with a white pocket square and a boutonniere. For me it is more about the details. I have no problem wearing that outfit in a business setting or in church. Plus I find that people tend to draw attention to your cufflinks more when you have nice patterned shirt with the white cuffs.
I can't believe you made a video on this, Antonio. You're the man!
Nice very video with good analysis on Gordans dress style.
You can never go wrong with the blue shirt and white collar.
In many areas of the corporate world you can't largess like Gordon Gekko unless you are Gordon Gekko - i.e king of Wall Street. Things like cuff links tend to be a status symbol for senior staff in management etc. you earn them as you climb the ladder so to speak
The President at my job routinely wears these types of clothes.
Quality of video is looking good. I see better lighting was used and less spill from your background color is great. Also saw you doing some ken burning there. Keep it up, just like style, editing takes practice and fines. And your information is as good as always, cheers
badass idea...keep them coming lol!
Sounds like you need to then reach-out to a custom clothier :)
Really like this video!
Could I request that you do a video on knitted ties?
I am so glad I subscribed.
I would like to see you in such suits simultaneously giving tips on dressing sense .
But what about Darth Vader - where did he rank?
This channel is awesome!
That is a ways off - although I may be interviewing a tie-maker soon!
Esquire put it best I think: "Because this is how Power dresses."
The poster was not alive in the 1980s obviously. The movie absolutely influenced men's style in the recent past. The "bankers color" of a white shirt on a blue body predates the movie by at least 50 years. Larry Kudlow dressed like Gordon Gecko long before the movie and was a perennial on the Best Dressed list.
Hey Antonio what do you think about the style of wear from 'The painted veil' I want to try an pull this look off for university as it makes a big statement on my character and that I know how to present myself. What do you think ?? Love your work as always !
Nice stuff man...I try to dress with dark jeans and a shirt with some black shoes. I`m a student and I try to dress like a gentelman. I've got 7 shirts: checkered, striped and simple. Now I`m looking for a new shoes.
President's do that :)
Good afternoo, I'm a young lady in college and I been watching your videos to get some ideas. I was wondering if you made any videos for women?
Also, what do you think of Garrison Bespoke, a huge tailor in Canada. The shop is responsible for the exquisite suits you see in the show "Hannibal".
Esquire's 100 Best Dressed Men of All Time List. Shame you're not on it, Antonio!
Hey Antonio i was wondering if you have any dressing tips for young people/teenagers. I'm 15 and i love suits and i want to pull them off. Thanks!
I play professional poker online and I want to start playing live tournaments (because that's where you build a name).
What are your thoughts on dressing intimidatingly in this kind of environment? I was thinking of doing it because any doubt or fear your opponent has gives you an advantage over him. However, most poker players dress extremely casual and I might stand out like a sore thumb.
Can you review the style of the character 'Neal Caffrey' from the show 'White Collar'?
Dear Antonio,
Have you ever seen the movie "Limitless"? In the movie Robert De Niro is wearing some kind of neck "speld". Do you know what this is and do you recommend it?
At 1:10 you get a very small glimpse of it

The ”Gekko” look never really existed. It was made up by the costume designer and then it stuck and became what we now associate with Wall Street.
It comes from the movie Wall Street. Gordon Gecko aid it during his speech.
Yeah - but he is the Donald!
The "Gekko Shirt" seems to come in and out of style every few years. Obviously it got popular in the 80s after the original movie came out. I remember seeing them around agin around 2000, but don't see them too much these days.
it's common in the finacial business
by more, I mean please give me other thoughts. I have perfect vision but I was thinking of dark rimmed glasses like Henry Kissinger. brief case?
Did I talk about reptiles?
Putting in those pictures DRAMATICALLY increased the quality of this video
"Someone reminded me I once said greed is good, now it seems it's legal. Wake up pal, money never sleeps".
I can dress like Gekko, but how to look like Michael Freaking Douglas T_T
Remember it was in the 80s
Great video! Not sure why youre dressed like a janitor though...
Or maybe that was the style of the 80's? If you say, weren't born yet to experience that I understand why you would think this is new.
Dude, where can I get one of those white collared blue button ups?
+Vincent Ramsey Brooks brothers or Macy's
+Kenny Ciolek yeah I've actually got one one in my profile picture, Ralph Lauren has some nice ones. Looking to get a French cuff next.
Brooks has a beautiful contrast blue & white french cuff, definitely check it out.
#3, beyond Hannibal Lecter and Norman Bates.
Than don't buy those clothes! You are missing the point completely...maybe you are not very good or successful at what you do but fine clothing is a reward for those that are...be it a great pair of shoes or a 5K suit. Go for it bro, indulge, treat yourself, there is no dark side here. And your girl will love it ! I promise. Women LOVE men who are detail oriented. In chinos or in suits....nothing to fear.
:)
There's a lot of clothing with strong contrast worn by Frost in Frost Nixon
Greed is good.
Clothes have nothing to do with "money-grubbing". If you connect these dots you are missing the point. Clothes are a personal decision/affair. Just because a woman wears 6 inch heels, does that maker her a whore? Just because a man takes interest in his attires does not make him anything but a man who is aware of his own style. Too much time spent on the theme of "Wall Street" the movie and not enough on the aesthetic of Wall Street the place.
The feel of a tailored suit is incredible...
Do a jordan belfort
Gekkos look a little too clownish to me.
lol
LOL
I agree who wants to dress like a money grubbing snake.. Donald Trump reminds me of these type of business guys.
Man, I don't see anything particularly wrong or crazy about his style... I mean SHEESH!! Why would you want to look extremely formal and conservative all the time? That gets boring quick, if you guys think that a blue dress shirt with white collars are extreme then you guys have absolutely no sense of fashion/style at all lol.
It is a costume if you don't own a large company, if you are in fact buy multimillion dollar companies, you can get away with this.
