This is excellent advice! There's so much fluff out there about what's right and wrong and that only confuses me more. Your videos provide clarity! Keep doing what you're doing because you're doing it well!
he's right about the thrift stores, I got a beautiful Armani jacket, for about forty dollars, at a thrift store, and if you're looking for watches, go to pawn shop, my dad and I are watch addicts and we still go to pawn shops together just to see if they have nice watches.
For us Brits, "thrift store" translates to "Charity Shop"....and yes there are some cracking finds there (and on ebay if you are careful - I've found 2 jackets on ebay, including a harris tweed and a hacking jacket that would set me back a fortune bought new)
I take my jeans to be altered in my local tailors, got pally with the guy and now I get discounts on 2 or more pair's. I'll buy a £20 pair (35 $ ish) spend 15 pounds having the waist and bottoms fitted, they automatically look a lot more expensive. As long as the denim is decent, then jeans are jeans as far as I'm concerned. Awesome channel mate. Apart from the 25$ buttons, somehow I think you could of got them cheaper aha.
It is really refreshing to watch a video from a sensible (read, practical) man. I appreciate particularly your comments about gently used shoes. I am a big fan of vintage shoes, and since I can repair most of my own shoe problems myself, I can often see value where another person sees a layer of dust and a little elbow grease. The real man, in my opinion, places a premium on connecting himself to the generations of stylin' men that came before him by learning about quality shoes, and settling for nothing less. To add, there are some solid names in shoes, including one of my favourite, Hartt shoes, which went out of busines about 10 years ago due to the glut of garbage shoes on the market where they simply could not compete given their business organization and model. Hartt was in business almost 100 years and produced, with apologies to Florsheim and Frye, the best men's footwear in North America. The quality is similar to Church's at the middle, and John Lobbat the top. I have never owned a more comfortable shoe. I have about 20 pairs ranging in hides from camel to water buffalo, and from full brogue to brentwood style cap toes. They made shoes from many other hides, including turtle and seal which they sourced from England's Church's when it became politically incorrect to wear certain animal skins. I don't own any of the really high end stuff except one black antelope derby pair. So, if you can land yourself a solid pair of Hartt shoes from Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, you have found gold.
I am at a school that requires suits, I raided my dads closet and found my granddads suits. They fit me so much better than any store bought suit. They were properly tailored and no one had anything like them. One was charcoal three piece and the other was a tweed two piece, along with a crap tone of awesome ties! I love suits now :)
I have recently started changing out my wardrobe. I agree that learning to sew is hugely important particularly if your buying on a budget. I have lost count of the times I have had to sew a button back onto a new shirt first time through the wash.
I've been watching your videos today and I'm very happy you advocate people actually learning to sew. Three years ago I learned how to use a sewing machine and it's heaven to know how to wield such a machine. I have pretty big arms and I'm not able to buy bigger shirts to get the right sleevelength and alter the width to match my body. Also I got a really nice deal on a suit, but the pants were to small. The lady who sold me the suit told me how I could get it adjusted at the taylor. At home I did it myself. I'm also very glad that you told me what the differences between sportjackets, blazers and suitjackets are. I have a old suitjacket of my brother and I'm planning to switch the buttons. Btw, if you want me to sugges a topic for one of your videos: You told us you were going to make video's about hairstyles. I'm very eager to learn how to make longer hair styles look formal. I really like longer hair, but I always end up cutting my hair because I don't think it looks formal enough. Thanks for the awesome videos!
Antonio, I have been watching your videos off an on for 2 years now kind of dabbling and not really getting my style together until about 3 months ago. I recently decided to revisit this video tonight and see how many of these rules I used myself on improving my wardrobe. I have used ALL of them! The biggest one being THRIFT SHOPS. I found an almost perfect fitting 100% WOOL overcoat in BRAND NE CONDITION at my local thrift store 2 weeks ago FOR 10 DOLLARS!!!!! (half price for the holidays on all stock) Took it to a tailor and had it FITTED for $35 so I paid $45 for a coat that must have (based on the amazing quality) originally costed at least $200! Also, since I watched one of your recent videos on shoes, I have purchased a pair of full brogue wingtips for casual wear and the ladies love it haha! The last 3 months I have been getting a copious amount of compliments on my new updated style and I have also found that I am very fond of neckties LOL. I look forward to learning much more from you and taking one of your classes on personal presentation. Thanks a TON! You have changed my life Antonio I cannot thank you enough!
Great video! I am showing this to my class later today for their dress for success efforts. I also provided information from your 7 Style Tips For Large Men from a previous day when the men were taken to the clothing floor. Sadly there was nothing done for the male students before now with the Dress for Success efforts for the Center for Employment Training here in Ky. The women have clothing tips, a trip to a boutique specializing in getting women clothing for interviews and employment. The men, the majority being heavy, were taken to an over sized closet and turned loose to figure things out on their own.I would imagine this is an issue through out the country in programs such as these. Thank you for making these videos available.
Thank you - you are an source for inspiration. I did a gastric bypass a couple of years ago and lost 40 kg (about 88 pounds) and now I am getting the confident to dress better. Sadly, as a student on a strict budget. So this video helped me a lot. Thank you! :-)
Great info again like always I actually found a vintage hugo boss suit at my local good will got it tailored so it fits like a glove now :) and I was wondering have you done a video on watches yet ?
I personally love handle me downs! (if they fit) They just have a history, either it be from my father, or brother, I know it had memories from family. Now I have it, and I get to live it in.
found a $850 Burberry suit in the thrift store for $8 Ferragamo shoes for $5 Several Burberry, LaCoste, Raplph Lauren polo or dress shirts for $2 each. BUT you have to go there once everyday to maximize your finds and before someone else beats you to the punch.
I've been able to get some beautiful Brooks Brothers oxfords and ties from my local Goodwill. I've also restored vintage brogues with the help of great cobblers. Great video, all 10 are valid suggestions!
One other suggestion I thought of, connected with having a tailor, but somewhat simpler: to resolve to only buy clothes that actually fit. I wasted a lot of money in college buying clearance items which were a poor fit and I ended up wearing them out prematurely or never wore them because they were uncomfortable. Not spending too much $$ but waiting for the right items is the happy mean here. Cheers.
There's a great thrift store for suits, classy jackets/trenches, and formal wear...It's my secret store and the guys at work are always impressed with my style. I even have an athletic frame that's difficult to shop for. Check out your thrift stores!!!
i'm a gay guy, but i always love the classic men style. chino shorts/jeans + shirts/polo are fine with me. the simpler, the better. i don't go for those styles that are way too loud, overly colorful with lots of accessories. makes me cringe, i just can't imagine myself in it. lol!
Great tips. I bought 10 ties from a thrift store. They were exotic patterns and were about 4 inches wide. I altered them to be about 2 inches, and now everyone asks "where did you get those ties?!"
Great video. One tip I would add is to learn how to iron your own dress shirts, suits and pants. This has saved me a ton of money in dry-cleaning costs over the years.
I was 18 yesterday and just bought my first suit, I must say my experience would have been a lot different if not for your videos. Thank you for the help!
Very nice video! I always found it very hard to match that colour of shirts with a suit, so thanks for the inspiration! And you should definitely check out dandyshoecare!! They restore shoes and even colour them the way you want with patina etc.
i picked up some really nice dark read leather dress shoes at the salvation army for 2 bucks, and before i picked up some nice black leather shoes with metal around the toe for about the same price. every single time i wore them, regardless of how "grungy" they rest of my attire looked, i was complemented by both men and women constantly. Every. Single. Time. also, i checked out etsy for buttons. its amazing how you can get a lot of 30+ amazing, unique, and pretty well crafted buttons for like $4.
As a lady it very interesting to see the styles and ideas on this channel. I have suggested to my boyfriend that he watches the information on wearing waistcoats/vests as I think he would look very smart with that added to his wardrobe. Thank you for sharing your advice.
+FCM415 several weeks later and I have picked 5 pairs of dress shoes that are virtually like new. A monster has been created. 2 pairs of Johnston and Murphy Signiture Editions, a pair of Cap Toe Bruno Magli's and a pair of Allen Edmonds. Absolutely amazing that these shoes are in thrift stores
My god Antonio. You look pretty sharp in that Navy Blazer. I wish I could pull it off just like you did. BTW, I never knew about restoring shoes. TY :) Always feels great to follow your videos.
Wow Antonio I stumble accross your channel on accident following this link which look very attractive ( and is more than that) to a middle age married man whose style was left behind when the busy daddy life took over, and since; I am interviewing for a promotion the facial hair episode was awesome. Thanks
Hello, Antonio. I am asking if there are any online thrift stores that have classic cloths and shoes and ship to central African region. I will appreciate your help.
This is a great summary of ways to really improve one's game -- thanks so much for all that you do! Also, as you said regarding buying books or other educational materials, I'd much rather pay for a book from which I reap information than an article of clothing that is beyond hope in terms of fit, quality, or style!
Antonio, i have two good questions. If i wear a pocketwatch on my vest, should i unbutton the last button of my vest? Are there any other shirt style beside french cufflings? Thank you for your vids.
Timothy Tedja great to hear from you Timothy :) keep in mind that the bottom button of a waistcoat should always be left undone - the top button may be left undone as well however it’s optional. These articles should be useful: www.realmenrealstyle.com/mens-dress-shirts/ www.realmenrealstyle.com/mans-guide-vests/
I swear I could spend a whole day listening to you talk, great pronunciaton and fluid sentences, ever thought off a carrer in the area of public speaking?
Hey, I've recently been getting into your videos and they are really good. My grandpa was always interested in fashion and I am looking for ways to change my style up a bit. I was just wondering how many suits/sport jackets/ etc do you own?
Great straightforward advice. This is a very useful channel! Would enjoy to hear your advice on swim trunks in a future video. It's hard to find reasonably priced ones, since baggy board shorts with long inseams are the trend.
I work in retail so I'm always looking for unique and great pieces. I have been going to thrift stores since I was a kid. I've purchsed shirts for $3 and paid about $30 for tailoring! As a result, an awesome shirt! :) Also, are those functional button holes on your blazer?!
This channel is brilliant. Can't wait for my wage to get some new clothing! Shame we don't have shops that are as good in the UK. Anyway i'll have to watch a few more of your tips first. Thanks for the time and effort for these videos man!
Once again great video and great advice Toni :) Thank you for that. I disagree, however, with the advice to look for clothes and shoes in thrift stores. In my opinion, it's better to buy something cheaper but new than buying used and chemically cleaned second-hand clothes. Another way is to buy cloth and have some sewer make you a jacket or shirt for less money. Here in Europe, there are stores and brands with really cheap clothing (not first quality of course) and there is no point to go and look for used ones to save a few dollars. I'm sure it's the same in the states. Thank you once again and keep up the great style! Kind regards, Emil
Austin Hannah look for the clothes with the top qualities: light weight, breathability, sun protection and deliberate style. You can read more about it in this article: www.realmenrealstyle.com/hot-weather-dressing/
Hi Antonio, I have an old blazer that belonged my dad. I took it to the tailor and it fits me perfectly. My girlfriend says that the buttons look kind of old. I also have a suit jacket that I would like to convert to a sport jacket, but I what kind of buttons should I get based on the color of the jacket? Can you make a video about buttons and show us some recommendations? Thank you, I really enjoy all of your videos.
Great sense of style sir. Curious about something... I have tried to check out your watch, but can never get a glimpse. I feel like a watch is a pivotal aspect of a man's style. Do you agree, disagree; do you have videos on the subject as of yet? Kudos on your channel, this as well as aom are my top two favorites.
Hi, Antonio! I've been hooked on your channel for about six months now, and I have to say, it's a treasure trove of knowledge. However, one thing I notice is that most of your information is tailored to, well, real men! I know that's how the channel is supposed to operate, but I was wondering if you had any tips for someone like me, a junior in high school? Any reply or information is greatly appreciated.
Nick Crone thanks for the support. Appreciate it. These articles should help: www.realmenrealstyle.com/dress-sharp-tips-young-men/ and www.artofmanliness.com/2012/10/31/sharp-casual-young-man-guide/
I know i sound weird but, im 14 and i would like to know if you have videos/articles about tips for this age range? Thanks, i like your videos a lot by the way :)
cowboybebob007 great to hear from you. You can also find my books in Amazon: www.amazon.com/Antonio-Centeno/e/B00DNGOY4Q/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_3?qid=1402392015&sr=8-3
I got a nice, dark blue suit jacket at an antique store for about $38 and a very closely matching pair of pants for $15 at the same place. Both in spectacular condition, though the zipper on the pants recently busted :(
Just found your channel great Information here ! And Tails or no tails on a black ball tux ..? I'm a tall solid guy with very broad shoulders .. If that helps ?
Hi Antonio! I have a question that maybe you can help out with? I've been looking to learn how to tailor a shirt my self. After a few hours of googling, it seems like it's possible and I'm now on the hunt for a sewing machine haha. :D Any how, a question poped up. When buying shirts that are going to be tailored by either me or a real tailor. What fit should I go with? Classic, regular, slim? I'm super super skinny around the waist but only small over the shoulders. Best regards, Dennis M. Mortensen
If I can add, if you have a friend that you admire his style. Talk to him you will be surprised what tips and resources he has and is willing to share.
I live in little tropical island Mauritius and I can tell you that good quality clothing or designers cloths cost as much as a car. you have the picture On the other hand can you please advise, I want to stand out and I want to change my wardrobe. what can you suggest
Swan Htet I appreciate the question. These articles should be helpful: www.artofmanliness.com/2009/10/01/alteration_guide/ and www.realmenrealstyle.com/seamstress-price-guide-mens-clothing-alterations-cost/
+Real Men Real Style Seriously though, you're an inspiration. I've been watching your videos for a couple years now and refer back to them from time to time. I'm 25th years old so Im finding myself transitioning from the typical "college" clothes to a more mature, timeless and respectable wardrobe. Thank you very much for your youtube service and for the service you provided for our country. Life's a garden, dig it - Joe Dirt. ;-)
Dwayne Lowe You can wear grey flannel trousers, khaki trousers, white cotton slacks and jeans Read more here: www.artofmanliness.com/2010/09/16/man-blazer-jacket/ Art of Manliness
this might be to personal so dont answer if it is but in the beginning you said how most cant spend 2000 on a suit and 500 on shoes. but do you buy more expensive clothes? do you save up or what? im just curious
I'm relatively new to the fashion game, but is there a reason for the asymmetrical lapels? I've seen it on a few of your vids on different jackets, so I figure it's intentional.
Hey Antonio I got some ideas for a future video: High- or low shoes for men and hairstyles. I hope you read this, Greats from your follower in the Netherlands. Ps: sorry if my English isn't so good.
When I need to buy nice clothes, I only go to America's thrift store. I'm a very big guy, and I found three complete nice matching suits for a total of $35. But when I eventually make it big and can afford it, you bet your ass I'm going to start buying clothes at men's warehouse. Why? Because I can! That's what we call reaping the benefits.

Yeah, great fit on that jacket! Reminiscent of Phineas Cole style cut.
Thanks - it's one of my favorites!
Hello, Antonio. I am asking if there are any online thrift stores that have classic cloths and shoes and ship to central African region. I will appreciate your help.
+Eliyahu Avraham I'll look into it. :)
Very very helpful information. Thanks from New Zealand.
JonathanS995 thanks for the feedback :)
This is a great summary of ways to really improve one's game -- thanks so much for all that you do! Also, as you said regarding buying books or other educational materials, I'd much rather pay for a book from which I reap information than an article of clothing that is beyond hope in terms of fit, quality, or style!
ZeppedCream appreciate your feedback. thank you :)

Real Men Real Style a pleasant to watch your videos, thank you antonio....
Noticed that you chose to have the chest pocket done on the right side. Looks interesting. Any reason?

TH3_W31RD_0N3 cool!
Michael G great hearing from you Michael. Thank you for the style question. I will add this to my queue list
These are some quality tips!
I work in retail so I'm always looking for unique and great pieces. I have been going to thrift stores since I was a kid. I've purchsed shirts for $3 and paid about $30 for tailoring! As a result, an awesome shirt! :) Also, are those functional button holes on your blazer?!
OMG..thank you for this awesome tips...awesome work..keep going..definitly gonna buy our book =)
edson manuel you're welcome Edson! appreciate it :)
Nice, Antonio, love it!!
Allene Quincy thank you!
This channel is brilliant. Can't wait for my wage to get some new clothing! Shame we don't have shops that are as good in the UK. Anyway i'll have to watch a few more of your tips first.
Thanks for the time and effort for these videos man!
Jamie Evans great hearing from you Jamie. You're welcome!
I'm going to hook up with that dapper website you recommended.
Sorry but is it just me or is it fashion, 5:53 yes I can see the difference 3 buttons on the right and 4 on the left. Antonio was this an oversight?
Once again great video and great advice Toni :) Thank you for that. I disagree, however, with the advice to look for clothes and shoes in thrift stores. In my opinion, it's better to buy something cheaper but new than buying used and chemically cleaned second-hand clothes. Another way is to buy cloth and have some sewer make you a jacket or shirt for less money.
Here in Europe, there are stores and brands with really cheap clothing (not first quality of course) and there is no point to go and look for used ones to save a few dollars. I'm sure it's the same in the states.
Thank you once again and keep up the great style!
Kind regards,
Emil
Emil Hristov great hearing from you Emil. Great point there!
What is some good stuff to wear during the summer thats casual, but will also be nice looking?

Hi Antonio, I have an old blazer that belonged my dad. I took it to the tailor and it fits me perfectly.
My girlfriend says that the buttons look kind of old. I also have a suit jacket that I would like to convert to a sport jacket, but I what kind of buttons should I get based on the color of the jacket?
Can you make a video about buttons and show us some recommendations?
Thank you, I really enjoy all of your videos.
Eric Castillo thanks for the video suggestion Eric. I will add it to my queue list
Great info!
Great tips, thanks. But do you realize that you have 3 buttons on one arm and 4 on the other? Or are my eyes deceiving me?
I really love your jacket

Farouk Rana Well, you have the internet and family!

I got a nice, dark blue suit jacket at an antique store for about $38 and a very closely matching pair of pants for $15 at the same place. Both in spectacular condition, though the zipper on the pants recently busted :(
FutureUSMC12 you can fix it!
Very nice jacket! However, am I counting a total of 7 buttons on the two cuffs??? Trying to avoid taking a position in the 3 vs 4 debate? ;-)
Ridows need to get wid of their stuff. Lol.
These are all great tips! I'm planning on using the ones I'm not already doing.
Ron Martinez thanks. It's great to hear people like you are using the information I put out
Just found your channel great Information here !
Any how, a question poped up. When buying shirts that are going to be tailored by either me or a real tailor. What fit should I go with? Classic, regular, slim?
I'm super super skinny around the waist but only small over the shoulders.
Best regards,
Dennis M. Mortensen
Dennis Mortensen great hearing from you Dennis. This article should help: www.realmenrealstyle.com/proper-dress-shirt-fit/
If I can add, if you have a friend that you admire his style. Talk to him you will be surprised what tips and resources he has and is willing to share.

Life's a garden, dig it - Joe Dirt. ;-)
What color pant do you wear with the blue blazer ?

this might be to personal so dont answer if it is but in the beginning you said how most cant spend 2000 on a suit and 500 on shoes. but do you buy more expensive clothes? do you save up or what? im just curious
I'm relatively new to the fashion game, but is there a reason for the asymmetrical lapels? I've seen it on a few of your vids on different jackets, so I figure it's intentional.
It's an opening in the lapel so that you can put a flower or something else in there
Hey Antonio I got some ideas for a future video:
High- or low shoes for men and hairstyles.
I hope you read this,
Greats from your follower in the Netherlands.
Ps: sorry if my English isn't so good.
vincent buijs Great suggestion sir and your English is great!
That's what we call reaping the benefits.
bigjonfaulkner exactly!
