I am a Turkish person who lives in Romania temporarily and I totally agree with you, Romania is one of the most underrated destinationa across Europe, apart from Bucharest it has many outstanding and authentic cities especialy in Wallachia Transilvania regions, Romania is relatively cheap (except the capital), safe for solo travellers with great climate, diversities and natural beauties, I can not understand why not so popular like Budapest or Belgrade, I will benefit from your contents while travelling, maybe you have already gone but I hope you can visit Turkey also🎉

💯 Romania is totally an underrated destination! Moldova is a gem as well. Super friendly people and unique cultures. Eastern Europe in general has so much to offer travelers at a much more affordable cost than the well known Western European destinations (France, Spain, Italy, etc.)

We have driven all over Romania by car. Back roads over and through mountains are spectacular. Train travel is a challenge and slow but also an adventure! In our 20 or so visits we still need to see the Black Sea coast and Danube Delta region. Bucharest has some great parks and a superb outdoor museum in the north. Timisoara has interesting history: first city with electric street lights I believe, and is the scene of the start of the 1989 revolution. Important to know is the existence of 3 distinct people groups, not always getting along; Hungarian, Romanian, Roma. We have been to Roma villages, both urban and rural. But only go with a local. Oradea is a kind of gateway if you fly into Budapest, Hungary, and rent a car. Great country, great people.

I've been waiting for your Romania video! I'm sitting here in Brasov right now watching this, having my morning espresso. Going to walk to the historical city center to have some longoush and mici. I love that I can walk 5-10 minutes in any direction and have some tantalizing desserts and beer. I met the mayor of Brasov the other day while out for a walk.
Interesting fact, the reason pizza is so good in Romania is that when communism fell, people went elsewhere to find work. A lot of people went to Italy and learned the pizza trade. Then they brought their skills back here and put their own spin in it. My favorite pizza place in Brasov is Nonna's.
Yesterday we went to a little spring way out in the countryside for miles on a little dirt road, passed through gypsy communities, logging areas, and some really REALLY small towns. The water tasted sooooo good!!

Nice to see video and I agree with you Romania is wonderful country. I live on the south coast of England overlooking the Solent and nearby West Sussex and Goodwood that’s very beautiful but Romania is stunning. The only thing I would miss is not being near the sea. Thanks for your advice and comments.

Your interaction on the couch is why I am a long time viewer of your channel and videos. You have great rapport and you tell stories well. On those challenging days, like the lunchbag letdown stairwell, THAT is the experience that you remember and you recall. That challenging experience is better remembered than the best pizza you have ever had or the craft breweries. To me, this is why we travel, and see new places and people. Others tell you to go somewhere, and it doesn't meet expectations but you enjoy other places and even a country more than expected! Great video!

I spent a week in Constanța last summer. It was okay. The Black Sea is a different flavor.
I understand, but please don’t judge Black Sea after Constanta solely, and during a heat blast.

I visited Bucharest for the first time several months ago (staying in the Moxy hotel after seeing one of your videos) and it was such a memorable trip. Bucharest was this incredible mix between beautiful buildings that wouldn't look out of place in Paris or Vienna and others that were covered in grime and looked straight out of some communist era horror movie. It felt safe there despite the rough edges and I enjoyed all the contradictions (as well as the low prices!).
While it was a Bucharest city-break, I did escape the capital on a day trip to Peles Castle, Brasov and "Dracula's Castle" and while the later was a letdown, the first two were amazing - such great scenery on the drive and a real introduction to this amazing part of the world. I'll definitely look to go back and visit some of the countries other cities.
We also took a trip to Bran Castle and were let down. We were all prepared to do a video about it and decided not to. Besides that, we had a wonderful time in Romania. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.

I enjoy your entire 27 minutes of podcast. Its 1:23 a.m, so forgive me If I make some spelling mistakes. Anyway. I imagine people which suggested you to visit North-East, ment visit cities such as Suceava, Iasi and going all the way down to Black Sea and his main city; Constanta. I also recomand to visit Delta Danube. I live in the north part of Romania, region called: Maramureș. Its consider the most unique, tradițional region in Romania. Hi Brian and Carrie. I don't have a comment just requesting something I'd love to see in videos/podcasts. We found we were the most intimidated when going to restaurants and stores because we were unfamiliar with the correct "procedure" to get a table or check out at a store. No one seems to address this in videos. Basic things like navigating restaurants, do you just seat yourself or do you wait to be greeted/seated? Would Love to see information like this!!

One thing about what you said about Sighisoara, that they say Dracula was born there, but he's fictional, indeed Dracula is a fictional character, but it's based on Vlad the Impaler (Vlad Draculea) which is a real historical person and who was indeed born in Sighisoara. When they say Dracula around those places they actually mean Vlad the Impaler. Cheers !🍺🍺

Hey Brian and Carrie! I just wanted to share a couple of experiences from Romania that I had just last month. I spent about 6 days in Romania after renting a car in Budapest and drove around Transylvania. Some notes:
1 - I crossed into Romania before it became a member of the Schengen Zone and crossed back into Hungary after.... so I have a passport stamp for entering Romania, but not leaving!
2 - Driving around was pretty great with a few caveats. When you're on the main highways, it's fantastic driving! Beautiful scenery, particularly close to the mountains. But there aren't that many great roads, so it's a lot of driving through villages every few km. Nice to see them, but takes longer to get to your destination. Also, driving in the mountains is quite a challenge!
3 - Within cities, I only parked the car at the hotel and left it there until time to go to the next city, even when the hotel was about a mile or so from the city center. It really got me walking a ton (to burn off all that great food and beer) and was also a great way to see the cities without having to keep an eye on the road and traffic.
4 - Was amazed by the "foodie" culture throughout Romania, particularly in Cluj-Napoca. Spent 2 nights there and was really glad I did. Would have loved more time in Cluj and Sibiu but wasn't overwhelmed by Timisoara or Oradea (although the downtown core of Oradea was gorgeous... I stayed a little further outside the historic part of the city and could see that there hadn't been as much money put towards restoration/upkeep).
So glad to have visited Romania and thanks for your heaps of content from there!

I have 14 travel vloggers that I follow regularly and you guys have become my favorite. I’ve been following since day 1. These last several videos on the couch are great topics but please tell me you haven’t stopped making actual travel videos on location. These would be great if they were interspersed with location videos but for me it gets a bit monotonous watching you talk on the couch. I love the content but I miss the sightseeing because seeing what places look like is what ultimately leads me to destinations. In any case, I love you guys and appreciate the videos where you share costs, things to see & do & helpful hints. Great work!

I was in Romania in 1986 under Ceacescu. Needless to say, it was very different from what you're describing. I did visit Brasov at that time, along with Arad, Constanta, and Bucurest.
I'm sure so much has changed since then. We appreciated the pride those we met had for their country and all they've been through.
Nice to see you guys talking about our country again. 😊 I'll just go and say Bucharest has a few WAY nicer neighborhoods than old town, such as Primaverii, Cotroceni, Kiseleff...
In 1991 after watching 20/20 on the horroble conditions of the orphanages, I went with a small group to take supplies to the orphanages. I ended up adopting a little boy. Wow what a difference 30 years makes. Back then no stores, no beautiful streets., no lovely anything. Your videos are like black and white compared to what i saw. However Brian , the family i stayed with bought a dozen beers for less than 50 cents. Didnt look drinkable however. HA HA

Now that's a cheep beer price, but not so much if you really don't want to drink it 🤣
I know, it was plain horror. Romania came a long way in finding its way back to normality and showing the real face of the country and the people.
Communism is BAD, horrible, NOBODY in this world should go through what Eastern Europe went after WW2 1945
I visited the salt mines right outside of Salzburg, Austria with some of my German students. (Salzburg means salt in German.) It was super easy to get there, and they have it down to a science.
They give you overalls with a padded seat, and you go down to the lower levels by riding well-worn wooden slides. What a BLAST. I don’t remember having to climb up any stairs, but there must have been done. I think we just exited a different part of the mountain, so going back up was unnecessary.

Too bad that last August was so uncomfortably hot throughout the whole Europe! May-June or Fall is ideal to visit Romania, with knee-high wild flowers or produce abundant.
Also, too bad that wonderful Flix Bus was eliminated by the local disorganized local transportation mafia. Slanic Prahova Salina is less comercial, hugely impressive, in my view. Sebeș Alba is my grandma’s lovely place (and Valea Sebeșului, all the way up the stunning mountains). Ocna Sibiu, accessed by rapid train from Sibiu, fun to be floating in the salty lakes.
Bring mosquito spray in the Danube Delta’s and enjoy bliss nature, if you’ll find your way back to surprising, chaotic at times, Romania.

The train system is very outdated. They eventually get you were your going but they are behind the times.

Romania is where "Vlad the Impaler" lived. He's known for the many & varied ways of killing 100s of his enemies. He's the person Bram Stoker based his "Dracula" book on.

My apologies if you’ve already covered this question but can you please explain when you first starting out how you worked out the amount of finance you’d need per month or year etc? What categories did you allow for in calculating that?
We used the categories of accommodations, healthcare, groceries, entertainment, transportation, and misc. We just came up with a budget for each area we were comfortable with and made sure it was feasible in many areas to stay within. This will vary for everyone as we each have a different budget.

I had an underwhelming experience there last summer, the best areas to visit are the northwestern parts of the country that were part of the former Hapsburg Empire. Also and unfortunately, Romania and Bulgaria have finally been accepted into Schengen, so that leaves them out when trying to reset your Schengen clock...
It is unfortunate for us tourist that Romania have been excepted to the Schengen. We are sorry that you didn't have the same experience that we did. We loved our time.

It's a podcast that you can find on most all podcast platforms. When we announced that we were starting a podcast, many of our viewers asked us to add it to our UA-cam channel to be viewed as well. Our regular Saturday videos will go on as usual.
Romania would attract a lot of non woke american and canadian families as a place to spend their retiring years. People of Romania are still very conservative and traditionalist in the way they behave.
A lot of north american retirees would move to Romania because their purchasing power would be 4.5 better then in their own countries. A family of 2 would live above the decency level of usa in Romania with $1.500/mo In medium size beautiful cities like Brasov, Timisoara, Sibiu, Oradea, Arad, Constanta, Iasi, etc..
To live in Bukarest or Cluj a couple may need $1800-2000/Mo.
In USA or Canada with $2000/mo our days you end up living under a bridge considering the gallopant inflation there is today even in the smalk sleepy towns. A lot of romanian born usa retirees would opt to go back to Romania just because their SS monthly pensions are melting in their pockets every month due to the high inflation.
For many of them going back to Romania is the only option to regain the purchasing power they had in USA or Canada prior Covid. A lot of retirees from western europe (not romanian born) already chose to live in small villages Transilvania forming small communities. Romania must not be idealized. Life with daily problems is to be found in Romania too. Go visit first for at least a month. If you decide to move in rent first for a year or two. If it makes sense for you buy your own apartment or house. You can buy at a fourth of the average american or canadian apartments or houses now. Good luck in what ever you decide.
