Ah, yes, the oft referred to "chicken jibe," when you do a 270 degree tack. That's fine when in a sailing dinghy, but I have actually found that I am more comfortable jibing a larger boat. When you are jibing, you are headed downwind anyway, so you there is often less pressure on the sails. Maybe I would pull this maneuver in very high winds, but I would hope I had the foresight to put a reef (or three) in the sails.

Hey Jeff, good to hear how other people do things. On Britican, even when we bring everything right in for a jibe things move dramatically. We busted our gooseneck after an accidental jibe a long time ago and I think I'm still nervous about jibing! Thank you for sharing. Kim

@@Sailingbritican Yeah, an accidental jibe can be violent. That's why you often rig a preventer on a longer downwind leg. If you control things, though, you don't have much to worry about. But put it under the "more than one way to skin a cat" category (still don't know why I would be skinning a cat).

Tacking??? What's this blasphemy you speak of??? NO youtuber or anyone influenced by youtubers even knows what tacking is. If they have to go in a direction that requires tacking, they turn the damn engine on.
