- In this travel vlog I take a road trip to the Scottish Highlands. I journey from Loch Tay to Glencoe to Fort William, stopping off at some hidden gems along the way...
Scotland is perhaps one of the best countries in the world for a road trip. From majestic mountains to tantalising lochs (and let’s not forget some of the wildest camping spots on earth), this beautiful UK country has it all.
I start my journey in England, driving the scenic route from Lockerbie to Edinburgh, passing through Perth before stopping in Kenmore at one end of Loch Tay. Basing myself in Loch Tay, I then drive to Glencoe and Fort William, passing the mighty Ben Nevis and seeking out a hidden gem which I have been keen to see for so long - the Corpach Shipwreck (also known as the Old boat of Caol)! In this vlog, we'll discuss everything to do with the Corpach shipwreck, including the boat's history, it's location and how to get to the wreck.
Join me, as I document my time driving on some of the most spectacular roads I have driven on before.

Well done for telling the Glen Coe massacre the way you did, I am impressed.
Thank you. I'm glad you believe I did it justice. I thought it was important to include that information in the video. It's an important and shocking piece of history.
Kudos to you for swimming in Loch Tay! There's plenty of good wild river swimming to be had as well, not as cold as the big lochs.
Wild river swimming sounds lovely! Are there any spots you particularly recommend? I'll likely be going back to Scotland this summer and would love to check out some new spots. Thanks!
@@EllaMcKendrick I used to swim quite a bit on the Falls of Moriston between old and new bridges. It's a bit public though, you'd likely appear on a lot of Instagram posts! Come down to the river from the north end of the old bridge, bit steep but doable with your hands in your pockets, you come to a nice platform for launching yourself in. Looks a bit hairy but it's perfectly safe.
Thanks very much! Will have to check it out 😁
Beautiful video Ella, we did the highlands in 2019 and your beautiful cinematographic brought back many memories of our drive through the area. What a fascinating beach with the wrecks and well done on the cold swim, not sure I would be that game :) thank you for sharing such a beautiful video.
I'm glad I could bring back memories from your trip! Yes, Scotland really is a magical country. It never ceases to inspire me. The cold water was... something! My ears fared the worst. They were throbbing with cold!
Wonderful narration!!! Beautiful images and great edit….loved it ❤️
Thank you so much! I'm really pleased you enjoyed it 😊
Scotland looks great! Keep on your work Ella! Love the Voice over aswell!
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed it 🤗
Great shots and storytelling, looks like a fun trip 😁 I did a road trip in the summer from Edinburgh to Skye going through some of the same places, I was amazed at the scenery, like nothing I had seen in the rest of the UK.
Thank you! That sounds like an awesome road trip. I'd love to visit Skye. The images I've seen of it look insane! Yeah, England and Wales look nothing like Scotland.
I love the way you comment u have a wonderful voice🇬🇲❤️👊👊🔥
Thank you very much!
Loch Tay looks so fresh and clean to go for a swim. Is is a popular site for people to come and swim there? I'm mesmerized with those ranges of mountains, they're huge and covered with green trees. That sailing boat looks interesting to me. I haven't seen any here in my place, and that big brown boat too. Interesting video!
Yes it is very popular for swimming in the summer months. The landscape in Scotland sure is beautiful. Thanks for watching!
i went on a scottish roadtrip over october and passed by fort william and glencoe too!! very incredible to see
That's awesome! Where was your favourite place that you visited on your road trip?
As a keen road trip driver and 4 time visitor to Scotland I absolutely loved this video. I will look at some of the previous ones so catch up with your trip. Just lovely. And those 'dead' relics on the beach. I can get what you mean. Sort of interesting and a curiosity but also a tragic tale and that of neglect, left to rust and rot. Nice share to be sure. 🙏 🇳🇿🙋♀️🇳🇱
I'm so pleased you enjoyed my video! Scotland is such a magical country. Yes, I do love the conflicting emotions that wrecks and abandoned things in general stir up. I also find it kinda beautiful when nature starts to take over them, showing us that it is always in control 🌱
@@EllaMcKendrick Totally get that. 💝 👍
I love Scotland so much! Was supposed to go back twice in 2020 and it didn't happen :( I know I'll be back. It's one of the most beautiful places in the world and I really feel at home there. Glencoe and Fort William was a highlight when we visited in 2019.
Aw, I'm sorry that didn't happen! Hopefully you'll get to go soon. It really is a beautiful part of the world! Where is your favourite part of Scotland?
Great video🏴! If your back up again recommend visiting Isle of Skye as the drive is incredible
Great suggestion! I have heard many great things about Isle of Skye and would love to visit 😍
Omg I couldn’t get under that cold water. It looked cold from here. I remember when my friends and I went to Iceland there was an opportunity to swim in between the continents but it was so cold. So we just looked at it lol. That’s exactly what I would’ve did here lol. I look forward to seeing more of your exploration of Scotland.
Haha, gosh that water in Iceland was probably even colder than this! Have you ever heard of the Antarctic plunge? It's where you jump into Antarctic waters! It sounds... 🥶
Looks different from world 🌎 thnx ela for your efforts and amazing work
I'm glad you enjoyed watching! Thanks for taking the time to leave a lovely comment 🤗
Hello again Ella.
I am very happy to be able to see a new video of yours again and to be able to verify that both you and your boyfriend are in good health. 👌👏🏼👏🏼
As always a fantastic video (narration, selected music, drone and ground images 🔟👌)
You are very brave for having bathed in that lake, which certainly looks like ice water, I assure you that I would not even try. Just thinking about it makes my toes freeze. 😮😖🥶🥶
When are you planning to return to the Canary Islands for a few days of warmth ??? Now for Christmas it would not be bad. So you could enjoy a different Christmas and if you are lucky you will also find some snow on El Teide.
A big hug and have a happy Christmas season. 😘😘😘😘
Great to hear from you again, Ignacio! Yes, we are both well. I tell you, taking a swim in the loch at this time of year would be awful. It is so cold in UK right now 🥶You make me feel brave for trying it in summer, haha! I was hoping to go away somewhere in January but with the new variant, our travel restrictions have got tougher. I'm going to see how things go and make a decision at the last-minute. Stupid pandemic! 😪 Seeing now on El Teide would be magical! I am glad to hear it is still warm where you are. It was -5 degrees c here the other day 🥶 Take care and have a wonderful Christmas!
WOWWW!! Ella this was absolutely STUNNING!!!! AHHHHHH makes me want to head right on back to Scotland!
Awww I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, looking at the scenery makes me want to go back too. I bet Scotland is stunning in the winter when the mountains are covered with snow. Thanks so much for watching!
@@EllaMcKendrick Yeah well we had 2 days of pure rain which made it difficult for vlogging as it kept going down my camera lens! ahahaha but you're right - it's stunning any time of year i reckon...
Oh man! That's Scotland for you - unpredictable weather! What time of year did you go in? I was super lucky this year as I had sun every day but a few years before it rained continuously... and this was in July!
@@EllaMcKendrick Oh you can see the vlog from a day a go on my channel. We literally just got back! ahahaha rain in JULY?? bummer!!
@@BellaDiary Exciting! Yeah, you'd expect some nice weather in July right? 😂
The scenic route is always so enjoyable! Geez, why had the people died swimming in the other loch?? Whoa, we did not know about the Glencoe massacre! 😟 We agree with what you said about exploring ruins/abandoned things & places--we felt more of the "humanity" side of things in Sarajevo, for sure... Wayne says you should have climbed the rope onboard that ship! Hahaha
I believe they jumped into a really deep area. The water is colder, the deeper you go. The cold then makes it so hard to move so they drowned. Yes, I bet it was harder seeing ruins at Sarajevo as people lost their lives.
I really like how you narrate your video. It's too bad that there was an accident and your 4-Hour Drive turned into an 8-hour Saga. The scenery did look beautiful though. I definitely would have enjoyed swimming in the loch, checking out the mountain, and visiting the boat graveyard on the beach.
Yeah, I've taken 3 trips to Scotland from England in the past 5 years and on 2 of the 3 there was a bad accident on the motorway. It's sad! Agree, Scotland does have a lot of beautiful things to see :)
Great video of Scotland, and for including my birthplace of Caol where the shipwreck is on Caol Beach and not Corpach Beach.
I'm glad you enjoyed watching! I saw on Google Maps that the shipwreck was in Caol so decide to head there instead of Corpach. I was surprised so many people didn't mention visiting Caol in their write-ups of visiting the wreck as there's a lot of parking in Caol and some shops too which I enjoyed visiting.
@@EllaMcKendrick Hope you do get visit Caol again. I recommend visiting Neptune`s Staircase, and walking the Caledonian Canal from Banavie Swing Bridge to Corpach Basin. Fantastic views.
Thank you very much for the recommendations!
You should go see the Outer Hebrides 😍😍😍
Great recommendation! I really would love to 😁 It looks stunning there!
Great work here, well done. This is the kind of thing I'm trying to make, travel videos with lots of cool cinematic shots. what camera do you use to get such good slow mo shots? You found some decent cheap accommodation with that shipwreck!
Thank you! I use the Panasonic GH5. It's a couple of years old now but it's an ace camera and I have no plans to upgrade it as it does everything I need. Haha, you're right. I just needed to pop a sleeping bag in there and I'd be all set 😝
You didn't have issues with the midgets? That shipwreck reminds me of the one near Cornwall. I understand that awkward feeling you have, but I love it as well, it is just fascinating. I did part of this roadtrip myself years ago, I still want to do it properly now. Love to see it back here, hopefully next time I can make it all the way to Fort William.
The midges weren't too bad. But maybe that was because I wore bug spray every day! Fort William is pretty cool. I'd like to attempt to climb Ben Nevis one day 😝 I also am keen to check out Cornwall!
Locks? 🤔
