You know... I just realized that the space nation of 'SpaceZ' is more or less an interstellar version of Principality of Monaco: A tiny sovereign state (Only a single star system, which is only slightly above that of a primitive pre-FTL civilisation), with a population full of nothing but either ultra-rich people (megacorp) or police (the authoritarian ethic). Protected by and only existing thanks to the benevolence of a larger power. Yet, in the tiny bit of land that they do hold, the place will be super well developed (Habitats filling the entire star system), famous for its beautiful views (Homeworld being a Gaia planet), and have its financial tendrils spread way beyond their boarders (All the branch office buildings).
If you don't research FTL you might also find a no thruster mod to really slow down your ships. Also, for a one planet challenge, you might build a Dyson Sphere to really have massive pops and resources. But, this challenge should be taken after the bugs are worked out.
I do hope you retry this challenge when/if the problems are easier to solve/work around. I want to see you tackle a galactic crisis without actually doing anything to tackle a galactic crisis.
Always love how you make these more fun with the RP. Though the best part was researching the scientific method... after discovering "ftl travel" and shooting a science ship into space.
I did something like this completely by accident, I spawned inside dead center a xenophobic fallen empires territory, couldn't expand at all, and the FE was always flying doom fleets through my territory and sending me harsh letters, something about getting off their lawn, fortunately I had a mod that lets one research a means of editing the hyperlanes (adding/removing them), once I had that I removed all lanes to my home system, cheered up the FE massively, of course I wasn't going anywhere but to my surprise it was fun from a RP perspective, not going to lie it was one of the best games of stellaris I've had in ages.
