one thing i would like to say not primarily to Rheeevai but to the viewers and people that comment. Let new players experience the game on their own- answering questions i think is fine but your not helping anyone by helping them kill stuff or giving them boons. It can drastically warp a new players experience and expectation of the game. And not necessarily to the better.

Completely agree. I absolutely detest orbiters. It's selfish and spoils the experience for the player and those of us wanting to replay the game vicariously via fresh eyes.

Seriously, as soon as I saw the veteran player from chat show up in game I groaned. GW2's "helpful" community is its best and worst feature sometimes. Let new players discover things on their own. It's a better experience for the player, and we're here to watch them, not some show-off.

Glad you arent trying to ONLY min-max. Playing the game for FUN is imho the best way to enjoy it.
Two quick notes that aren't backseat gaming 😂:
      1. /wiki is an awesome command to look up anything you arent sure about in the game. It opens up the official wiki for whatever you typed in. It will also just search the wiki for whatever you typed in if you arent sure what its called!
      2. The personal story quest ( "main quest" ) gets MUCH better after the level 60 chapter imho. And is worth going through even the most boring possible early parts.
(Each race choices have different early story and stuff they do. People have different opinions on the different story steps : ) )
Tl;dr- /wiki is a tool there for a reason. Use it. The game is not great at explaining some things 😂

@@rheeevaiyou haven´t even scratched the surface of the mount-system yet, because you only got the limited "basic bitch" raptor as a free2play player. About mounts you should know a few things:
      1. mounts weren´t a thing until the second expansion "Path of Fire", and nothing prior is designed for them, and neither are they required at all. They are VERY convenient tho, i have to admit.
      2. Different mounts are NOT just a "reskin" of the raptor (as you´ve already noticed). Every mount works fundamentally different, has its very specific use-cases where they are superior, as well as quite obvious downsides.
      3. Since mounts were introduced in PoF (as i said earlier), you will need to play the Path of Fire expansion to not only unlock the full potential of your raptor, but the Springer, Skimmer, Jackal, Rollerbeetle and Griffon are unlocked in PoF (as well as their masteries to upgrade them), the skyscale has an extensive collection in Living World Season 4 and an alternative, more streamlined way in Secrets of the Obscure, and the Siege Turtle is a collection from End of Dragons. All of them require to play the respective expansion (with Skyscale requiring both LWS4 and SotO) to unlock their full potential

Small node to your character voice throughout the story; All 5 player races, both male and female, are voiced. Can't remember if they changed any over the years, but that has always been the case since launch. Some of them even have special race dialogues at certain points in the story.

I love how he thinks this is an old-school mmo when it's actually one of the very newest styles. By a long shot. Even though it's a 2012 game. He'll figure it out though 8)
*NOtes for Rheeeevai:* 1. you have to pick up stuff. See the sparkles on dead mobs? Hit loot when you do. Spam it after a big fight. then you get a very good autoloot Mastery skill at 80. BEELINE for that.
    2. bind dodge to side mouse & learn to chord with WASD so you can dodge by direction. This game is Souls Very Light
    3. Tab Target works & is very useful. It's just not mandatory.
    4. /wiki will bring up the wiki for that thing. Mandatory & awesome.
    5. Everything levels you. Best to do Hero Points & Waypoints though. You need all the waypoints & can't have too many hero points.
    6. First thing you do at 80 is get all the basic mounts & jump on a Hero Point Train (ask someone what that is.)
    7. 20 or 30usd gets you the first 2 expansions, which are both huge & awesome & have all your mounts (mostly)
    8. Reply with your name & i'll mail you some bags & a bit of cash. RhGh.8413 in game if I don't respond.
    9. This is a HORIZONTAL game. ONce you have full Ascended (not super hard or super expensive but a little hard, a little expensive) you are as powerful as you will get gear-wise. Power level mostly stays the same from expansion to expansion. INstead you get more cool stuff & utility. Skill counts for a LOT in GW2.
    10. A final thought: you are much richer than you think in this game. A lot of the Account Bound items in your item storage can be arbitraged into salable stuff. OR you can just sell materials & make pretty good money.

I have had the opposite experience. I recently tried the game out. Played fout abour 3 weeks trying out different classes and so on. Any time I asked a question in game I was either told to look stuff up myself, or was met with silence and no one answered. One time I asked for help with a boss like npc and I got two replies saying that "you should be able to solo that." It felt lonely. I asked in forums about it and people said it was probably the time of day I was playing.

As someone who's played this game off/on since closed beta, it's always fantastic to see new players to this game. It was a big change to the MMO scene back during it's release. a wonderful breath of fresh air compared to the cookie cutter WoW system clones.
It's a fantastic game for both hardcore AND casual MMO'ers.
    It's also a game that doesn't thrive on Min/Max or P2W markets.
PvP is it's own system. Pve is it's own system. AND it also has a PvPvE system as another type of combat area/mode.
There are very thorough guides. There is a dedicated timer to all the major events that happen in the world of Tyria.
And above all else, the player base is some of the least toxic/most helpful players you could find in an MMO.
There was a video i watched on redefining keybinds as being more ergonomic by moving your left hand over 1 key set. so instead of WASD, it'd be ESDF for movement. I then set A to dodge. If you really think about it. It should be more comfortable, seeing as how your hands would be typically resting in that configuration anyway for typing. It took a few hours to get use to doing it the updated way. but once i did, it opened up a more comfortable keybind slate for MMOs that originally use WASD movement.

    Welcome to Tyria!
Since this is a long video, I will probably leave several comments over time. Obviously this might include stuff you already know by now.
4:40 You are in good company, as there are quite some FF14 players who use GW2 as their secondary MMO while waiting for the next FF14 content. As GW2 has horizontal progression and no sub fee, it is a quite popular secondary MMO for many in such situations and it makes it easy to take breaks and hop back in whenever you like. If you think FF14 respects your time, this game does it even better. In case you aren't familiar with that term: Level 80 was the maximum level since release and also the best in slot gear from back then is still valid today. Builds may have changed, but there is no endless grind with ever increasing item levels. Instead of this you will just unlock new options for traversing the world or additional skills allowing more builds. And of course fashion - which you should be familiar with as FF14 player. For me personally it is the other way around: I tend to give FF14 a visit whenever I wait for new content in GW2.
10:00 You probably learned this by now, but all classes have several weapon options. Your 1-5 skills depend on your class and weapon (and in some cases an additional class mechanic). You can try everything out within the PvP lobby, where you get boosted to level 80 (just in that area) and have access to all skills. There are also some training dummies, so you don't have to actually do any PvP in there. Just don't go deep into theory crafting based on that, as there are balancing differences between PvE and PvP. If you purchase any expansion, you also get an actual level 80 boost which can be used to try out the classes in an actual PvE zone.
18:00 Yes, there is a lot customization! :) You haven't even seen half of it. Besides unlocking even more colors and skins for armor and weapons there are also make over kits available (gem shop, but you can also convert gold to gem if you own any expansion).
19:00 These background questions determine your level 10 and 20 story (and you also get different stories up to level 30 based on your race). So if you create another character it is worth choosing different options.
21:00 Guild wars 2 has this painterly art style which makes it quite unique. They are sticking to it, as proven by the character select screen which was recently updated for the latest expansion.
24:45 It is strange how many people miss this obviously placed NPC with a marker above his head :D
26:00 The main story and a ton of side story and ambient NPCs are voiced, although not all of them. I like the fact that GW2 doesn't follow the silent protagonist approach and your character actually will get to a point where he is assigning tasks to others as well and not just not and does what other people want. on the other hand yes, you can not really choose your voice - although all races have different voices for male and female (which is actually already ten voices).
29:30 A bigger world? Wait till you open the map and zoom out! But to be fair, not everything you see there is completely explorable, just the regions with the numbers on it (the required levels).
34:30 Hearts are regional quests with personal progress, dynamic events on the other hand are like FATEs, but on steroids. You don't need to finish a heart right away and come back any time you want. So if you ever run into a heart that seems boring, you can skip it and do it another time. Also: Told ya, the world is big! :)
41:00 Just noticed you still have the wiggly expansion symbols behind your v-tuber avatar. You can click on them and answer with "later" to get rid of them. You probably should disable double tap for dodging, as this can mess up with the jumping puzzles in this game. And there are many of them.
44:45 As @FlowerBot already mentioned in another comment, you can not steal loot or kills from others. As long as you hit once or even buff one of the players involved in the combat you will get credit for it GW2 was designed with the goal to bring people together, help each other and participate together in the open world content. You even get experience for reviving other players. This is design is setting the general mood for this game and probably a major contributor to why the community of this game is considered to be among the most welcoming and friendliest in the genre (another thing where GW2 and FF14 share traits) - even though you never can rule out some exceptions, especially when PvP is involved. In case you are playing off stream, make sure to use the local and map chat to ask questions and you will get answers, as there are always veterans around who like to help new players.
So, that's it for today. Enjoying your style, so liked and subscribed and I might add some more on another day.

@@rheeevai That's the best approach. This game is much more about the journey than the goal. And unlike in other games you still do a lot of open world activities and exploration at max level as part of the end game, so it doesn't turn into a waiting space for instances group content.
54:40 The story slowly builds up (as your chat stated, base game story has some flaws) and has peak in living story season 4 where it manages to truly trigger some tears. Something that only a few other games achieved. It isn't as good as FF14, but it is definitely among the better MMORPGs when it comes to story. If you care about the story you want to approach it from top to bottom in your story journal and will require you to get the "living world seasons" (LWS for short), basically smaller purchasable DLCs that continue the story between expansions and (except for season 2) usually also expand the world and might introduce new features. Like with FF14 with the story until Endwalker, the story until the expansion "End of Dragons" tells a bigger arc. The latest expansion, "Secrets of the obscure" tells a new story.
Players who are not interested in the story aren't forced to do it though and can do content in pretty much any order they want. Not a thing I would suggest to do, but it is an option.
The main story of the base game is separated into chapters you will unlock about every ten levels.
57:00 When you complete a heart, the NPC will turn into a vendor. You can use the vendor to sell junk items with one click (there is a button for that in the sell UI). Most of the stuff you pick up will be salvaged into crafting materials (even if you don't craft yourself it is usually better to sell material instead of the items). In order to salvage items, you need salvage kits. You'll get some while leveling and can get more at vendors.
59:00 In your equipment panel (press "H" then go to the top tab and then equipment) you will find some check boxes next to some inventory slots. Uncheck them to hide the equipment in these slots. You can hide your helmet, shoulders, gloves and back. You can also hide your weapons while not in combat.
1:03:30 Below your skills in your skill bar there is sometimes a red bar. This indicates you are out of range (based on the target you are aiming at). You are still allowed to use the skill, but you will hit nothing in these cases.
1:04:30 On your level up rewards there are little info panels telling you more about the features of the game. Take your time and read them.
1:05:45 You can combine your bags into a big inventory if you click on the cog wheel on the top right of your inventory if you want.
1:06:00 The removed most of the punishments for dying in this game. If nobody picks you up you simply have to respawn at a waypoint and pay the waypoint fee. If you don't have the money to pay that fee it is for free - but this will most likely never happen (as you deliberatly have to throw away your money to get to that situation). Originally your equipment got damaged and might get broken, so you had to repair it at repair stations for a fee. First the removed that fee, later on they also removed equipment getting damaged. The repair stations now provide a buff that lasts 12 hours. You probably should get it.
1:11:00 Forgot to mention it earlier, but for future streams of this game you might want to place your avatar on the bottom left to cover your chat box instead of the minimap. That said, you can also move the minimap to the top if you want. The level scaling in GW2 is great. I hate when I get scaled down in FF14 and loose access to skills or even worse jobs that I just learned. This messes up with the rotations I try to learn.
1:13:30 I know it is kind of silly, but I am a huge sucker for pretty skyboxes.
1:14:30 The indicator just points to the nearest objective you can do. This might obviously change based on your own location. Additionally dynamic events may pop up or finish any time and change that indicator as well. You can change the behavior of this content indicator to not to react to dynamic events and personal story in case you want to focus on world completion. But for now I would suggest to keep it the way it is.
1:20:30 Reviving NPCs usually contribute to completing hearts if you are in a heart quest area. The trinkets you pick up should be delivered to an NPC to get additional heart progress - otherwise they just fill up inventory space. In case you still have these "trophies" in your inventory you can usually savely destroy them. In case you are unsure about any item, type "/wiki" into chat and shift+click the item to paste the item link into the chat window. This command will open the official wiki page in your browser with the item you linked.
1:24:30 There is fall damage and you can die to it. In the first expansion you get access to a glider, this helps a lot to avoid dying from falling.
      Off for now. More later.

I love seeing the influx of Players that guild wars 2 have been lacking for many years, it's a great game with some shortcomings (notably the pacing in the story and development struggles internally make some of the pacing seem very off. Still great story and great characters.)
It's by far my favorite MMO to roam and just do casual content in, even if I have done the raiding and pvp too.
Also I grew up on playing The elder scrolls 4 Oblivion, and this game has the same composer for many of the early zones, and I just feel so nostalgic both for my many hours in guild wars but also for my early teenage years playing lots of Oblivion.

For the class choice, many people get fixated on categorizing by melee vs ranged vs healing etc...but here you should go with what fantasy inspires you the most, since every one of 'em have close combat and ranged weapons, that you can hot-swap even in combat, and abilities (and traits) options to heal/support, damage or debuff as you want...you can even be a heal warrior if you want (some traits require the expansions tho) 😊

    • @jurare89
      @jurare89 8 місяців тому +1

well, that´s a class-fantasy that will not work out for you vor a VEEEERY long time. Just a general advice (since based on this comment, you´re still quite stuck in the "other mmo's mindset":
We do not have the classic Tank/healer/DPS "holy trinity" in the same way as other MMO's that have a holy trinity. In open world and story, we do not have healers or tanks. Everyone is DPS, sometimes utilizing some more defensive traits and abilities to be self-sustainable (like a bruiser-style).
In instanced content however, we have kind of a different type of "holy trinity", but it´s not as distinctly clear or barebones as just "tank/heal/DPS". We do not have a hate/enmity/aggro-system based on threat. Like: at all. it doesn´t exist. And tanks only exist in a handful of raid-encounters in Heart of Thorns, but the way how tanking works is different from boss to boss (that can be anything from the player with the highest toughness-stat, the player closest/furthest away from the boss, a special mechanic, and many bosses don´t have a tanking-mechanic at all and target random). That also means: we don´t have a "pure tank".
Instead, we use something we call "role compression", where we put healers, tanks and supports (supports being professions that are able to keep up certain key-boons) into positions that often cover multiple roles (for example: alacrity-healer, quickness-healer, alacrity-DPS, quickness-DPS, or full-DPS), and on top of that: the few bosses that DO have a tank mechanic, you will often have the healer also be the tank.
So our "classes" are basically "offensive support", "defensive support" (healer) and DPS. But ALL of that is completely irrelevant until you at least finish the Heart of Thorns expansion, so it would be advisable to put that thought aside for now and just enjoy the game (it also gets WAY better once you finish your personal story and Living World Season 1 and 2, when you dip into the expansions)

@@jurare89 I'll add my personal experience from years ago to your comment. GW2 gives you a lot of freedom.
My first character was a necromancer, and i could easily switch and mix from damage, conditions (like poison and bleed) and undead minions that can leech life from enemies so i was very tanky as well. My second character was a guardian and while i started already being more tanky with shields and some heals later on i also picked burn skills to deal a lot of condition damage to enemies and even cleanse allies.

Sure. But, some classes like Warrior are not even remotely viable as pure ranged, you HAVE to use melee weapons.
But, yes. Most classes don't follow any sort of strict theme, which is what I dislike about them.

    • @jurare89
      @jurare89 7 місяців тому

@@spankyjeffro5320 it´s not even a question if "ranged" is "viable" in instanced. because in instanced content, you´ll be in melee-range most of the time anyway, even if you have a ranged weapon, since boons are applied in a (relatively limited) area, as well as healing. Even if you were a Longbow ranger, you´d still be standing in basically melee-range anyway, since there´s no penalty for using ranged weapons in melee. The only advantage ranged does have, is that you may be able to continue damaging the boss during mechanics that require moving away. And that´s like... 1% of an encounter...

The beauty of GW2 is that there's no holy trinity, and each class can fill (mostly) any role. There's no tanking, everyone can heal, and high end content really depends on each player knowing what their character brings to the fight buffwise. My Mesmer is far harder to kill than my Guardian, but the Guardian does more damage if I'm on top of my rotation. Everyone can do everything to varying degrees. Subscribed, keep up the good content!

idk if it's too late to comment this but 1:57:00 just a general rule of thumb,
    copper = cheap
silver = slightly more expensive if you have to buy a whole stack(250 units) of things.
gold = very expensive. and yes it can turn into very very expensive (legendary weapons/ infusions/ some tradeable account wide convenience item).
you also asked in the beginning what the heart vendors are for once they are completed. while leveling up i usually use the heart npc's to get rid of the junk in the inventory or the items i dont need. just talk to them and they will let you buy or sell stuff. they sometimes also offer things like better trinkets (rings, accessories and such) as you level up and in a highr level zone in exchange for karma, another base game currency. sometimes they will offer armor with different skins(you require transmutation charge, a gem store thing to change a particular armor/weapon skin, unless you get into "world vs world" game mode which has free transmutation charge rewards).
you can see how much gold or karma you have by looking at bottom right corner of the inventory. there is also a wallet on the left hand side, but it's kinda complicated because it stores info about different map currencies from all the expansions and game modes.

I love watching new players experience both GW2 and XIV. Cool to see a crossover of the two rather than the normal "WoW player tries X mmo". I love both games (and WoW ofc) but I definitely think GW2 is the sleeper best of the 3 when it comes to stuff other than raiding and hard-mode dungeons (M+). The others simply cannot compete with it, as its designed from the ground up with a focus on exploration and open world - something XIV sorely struggles with due to tech limitations as I'm sure you know. I also happen to think it has the clear best combat system of the 3, but that is subjective (as well as a few other things I think it does better)
As much as I love the other games, none of them are as 'free' as GW2 as you put it (both in terms of gameplay and price lol) - and you have barely scratched the surface of the freedom afforded to GW2 players. I wish you well on your journey and hope you stay and learn to love it as I do.

I LOVE GW2 and been playing since the beta. This game has ruined me for all other MMOs:
-NO aimlessly running quests back-and-forth across the world to turn them in. If you finish the quest, then you can finish it where you are.
-Lvls adjust if you go to lower lvl regions, you will always have a challenge. Higher lvl friends can come and play with a new character and not run around killing all mobs with one hit.
-Hearts and world events are made for people to help each other. If numerous people are attacking ANY target, then they all get loot and exp. No loot stealing.
    -Almost all voice acted parts.
-NO "HOLY TRINITY" makes it so no one HAS TO play what they don't want to. If a "tank" dies, then the whole group doesn't die. Everyone can get other characters up from a downed state.
-Customization system. All appearances and dyes you discover are saved and shared across ALL other characters....as long as the character can wear that type of gear. They dye system is amazing with the 4 sections for each piece of gear. Even mounts (animals and boats) and full special outfits can have the dye changed.
-Action combat system is one of the best. You can target a mob or just swing a sword to hit what you want. If numerous mobs are in the area of your weapon, then you will hit them all. NO WoW style attacks where someone shoots a fireball at you and it will follow you until it finally hits you. You can DODGE to not get hit. Game is more based on skill or knowing your moves and not that you have god lvl gear....because god lvl gear doesn't really exist in this game.
-Mount system actually has a special reason for each mount. Not JUST TRAVELING. Some can warp you, go faster, jump high, jump long distances, and glide over water. The water gliding mount can also be used UNDERWATER if you train into it. There is also a dragon that can fly if you put enough time into getting one.
    -The community is great too.
***The mounts are one of the newest features I listed, but everything else was part of the game when it came out 11 yrs ago, so why don't all new hyped MMOs have these features? They are a must***

I know this VOD is already a few days old, and a lot of questions probably already got answered in chat. But anyway, i will cover a handful of stuff that came up while i watched the VoD. I may miss a few points (since i´m skipping some parts in between that don´t seem too interesting too watch (sry), but i´ll get to anything i catch.
Living World is the content that connects the Core-game to the first expansion, as well as being the connection-point inbetween expansions. Imo it´s important to know, that the story is chronological (as displayed in the Story Journal), and everything is connected. Later Story assumes that you know the events that happened prior, and some points even get relevant a lot later (without spoiling anything: you could argue that some events from Living World Season 1 leading into Season 2 set the foundation for EVERYTHING up until the finale of the End of Dragons Expansion (the 3rd expansion). ) that is also the reason why we (the community) always recommend to play the content in order of release, including its heights and lows.
hearts are not typical "quests", because we don´t have quests. they are called "map objectives", mostly required for map-completion and you can totally level up to 80 without doing a single renown heart. So you should not focus on them entirely, but go exploring instead.
the downscaling-aspect is a nice touch, but you will not be as weak as a player on the actual level you got scaled to. that´s because only your base-stats are lowered. your gear is still active, all your unlocked skills and traits are still active, making you stronger than a player on the actual level.
the level-scaling also affects EXP gain to some extent. You will gain less EXP for completing events of greatly higher level than you, but you will also gain less EXP for completing events you are massively overleveled for. You usually don´t want to be more than 5, maybe 10 levels at max over the event/area level. You can see the intended level-range for a zone on the world map. also, many activities grant EXP based on a percentage of your level if you are within the intended level-range. a Vista for example grants you 3,75% of a level based on the area, or an event with gold-tier participation grants 7% of the event-level in EXP. so your chat is actually not entirely correct, since the EXP required increases per level. you´ll finish a zone WAY before level 80, and get diminishing return for activities.
for the map-changing-part: all open world maps are instanced, and the amount of different instances (or versions) of the same map depends on how many players are on said map. if a map gets too crowded, a new instance gets created (that´s one where you landed after you started) and if the player-count decreases, the additional instances close again (which was why the game told you to swap maps, and giving small boni for leaving the empty map incentivizes populating the maps).
at ~1:53:00 you didn´t fully download the game before starting, so the game downloads content in the background and on-demand. it´s always recommended to fully download the game, since starting early may result in not only maps needing to be downloaded, but also sometimes textures don´t load properly or audio is missing.
talking about mounts: core-game up to right before the Path of Fire expansion are not designed to be explored with mounts. in fact: mounts did NOT exist until the release of the Path of Fire expansion (the second expansion).
at ~2:22:00 no, it´s a story-instance, you just happened to have people in your party, so you were able to play with them. but the story-instances are intended to be playable alone, and the "classic" dungeons are only a thing in core-game. we do have scaling dungeons with increasing difficulty-levels as level 80 core-game content tho.
about the roles: i explained in another comment, but here we go again :). we don´t have healers and tanks outside of instanced endgame content. and we don´t divide strictly by tank/heal/dps, but rather between offensive support, defensive support and full dps. each support provides a specific key-boon for the group, with the defensive support also providing healing. also, tanking works different here, we don´t have hate/enmity/etc, but mechanics that vary based on the encounter (for example distance to boss, player with highest toughness-stat, sometimes it´s random or no tanking at all).
about the "evasion-tank": yes, this actually exists (kinda). that would be chronomancer, a mesmer-elite-specc, which has distortion as a class-specific buff, allowing to dodge (almost) everything while it's up. and yes, as it´s been said, chronomancer/mesmer is a light armor profession, once again a point where GW2 breaks established "rules" in MMO's.
You are also entirely correct: there is no "right or wrong way to play a class". however: there is definitely a massive difference between playing a good/useful build and a bad/useless build. But player-skill and class-knowledge matter by FAR the most. a top-tier build played by a bad player is 100 times worse than a sub-optimal build played by someone that knows their stuff.

    • @rheeevai
      @rheeevai  8 місяців тому +1
