It's great to see another content creator enjoying Tyria! I came from 10 years of WoW myself and GW2 is definitely different in many ways.
A couple of tips after watching the video:
1 - When you are downstate, the "4" key is "bandage self" which is a channeled skill and will get you back up unless you get hit, or interrupt it by pressing another button.
2 - The cosmetic store items (the gem store) can be purchased with in game gold as well! You can convert gold to gems using one of the other tabs on the gem store, allowing long time players the option to buy many things in the store without spending $$.
If you have any questions about anything please don't hesitate to ask! Incubyte has been excitedly telling us about your progress so far XD

The level requirement to be able to enter Lion's Arch on a free-to-play account is actually an anti-goldseller mechanic. Any player following the story/levelling-up in the matching level zones, will be naturally led to LA at the point they are at the level to enter it. So unless you're being led/pushed in that direction by another player, the block on entering it doesn't impede gamplay at all (you have all 5 starting zone waypoints unlocked from the beginning for this reason, so you can go to any starter zone without taking the gates via LA). It does however make it extremely annoying for wannabe goldsellers who want to reach there as it's the most populated player-hub of the 6 major cities.
The other f2p restrictions that only mildly affect actual players but make it impossible for gold-sellers to abuse the creation of free accounts, are that f2p can't use mapchat, limiting them to saychat (local area chat) and f2p can't whisper other players unless either a)they have said player in their friendlist/the other player also has them in friendlist. or b)the other player has a Mentor Tag turned on redering them open to be whispered by f2p players who want some advice.
These along with the 500g per week cap on sending gold via ingame mail/via guildbank storage, and that an account less than 30 days old can only move a dramatically lower amount of coin-value of items off their account via guildstorage/mail, got rid of the scummy goldsellers very quickly and protects new players from getting scammed out of valuable login rewards like Mystic Coins.
Before the above things were implemented, if you talked in mapchat in any of the major cities, making your name visible in chat to be clicked-on, you'd get almost instantly hammered with at least 1-3 gold-seller adverts via whisper or ingame mail. Sometimes it could be 10+ of the things. After the restrictions were implemented, that immediately dropped to zero. Yep, absolute zero. I've not had a single piece of gold-seller spam ingame since that update. So while they are a mild inconvenience, they've proven very effective :)

I just go to Lion Arch by making a character, going to the pvp map lobby, taking the portal to Lion's Arch. Unless they've changed this that means you can get to LA the moment you're done with the tutorial.
Also pro tip you can skip some races tutorials by running directly to where the final boss fight takes place, humans need to take the mote around the castle

Currently at around 25:00 but you can actually get yourself up out of downstate by pressing the 4 skill (the hand icon)! You just have to press nothing else afterwards. That will interrupt the skill. And taking damage from anything will also interrupt the skill. But as long as you're in a safe place away from enemy aggro/environmental hazards, you'll always be able to pick yourself up with the 4 skill.

    • @alegrebandolerotattoo

@@clarynaa5360 "power" is not only inflating item level, or stats.. you have lots of things to achieve, unlocking ascended equipment (not only for stats but for infusion slots), LOTS of achievements which are not an extra like in other MMORPGS, think of them like quests which can give you big improvements in your account (skyscale mount, gizmos, titles, even gear) or simply legendary armory unlocking the """power""" of choosing whatever stats you want in whatever moment you need to play the class/spec you like more. There is a lot of things that improve your character/roster/account to do. Game is clearly horizontal progression, no argue, but that doesn't mean you aren't growing in power!

@@clarynaa5360 I always view the Mastery System as a stand-in for the vertical progression that some players crave for. Just like your Character Level, your Mastery Level is visible to everyone else.

As a veteran GW2 (and gw1!) player, this was a wonderful video. I loved to see how you interpreted certain aspects of the game given your experience in WoW. I think you'll find things get more challenging as they go, but that story missions are not necessarily supposed to be hard, for instance (they're designed to be solo-ed, interestingly enough). Not having a monthly fee at all makes certain things that point you towards buying the game make sense to me, as well, cause you pay one 30 dollar fee and you get an absolutely HUGE amount of content. Weapon and armor stats don't REALLY matter for a while, because eventually the game becomes only about horizontal progression, and never really becomes an actual gear grind (except for fashion!). For instance, ascended gear and legendary gear have the same stats! It's all about combinations, but that makes it so that a person who took years off the game can come back and not feel incredibly underpowered, which I appreciate as someone who did take a bunch of time off at one point.
You gotta stick around for world bosses and map meta events, though, those are what keep me going. I love when myself and literally 60 of my best friends do one single massive event chain or fight a big boss together. They're so fun, and the way the game encourages cooperation is stellar.

I've tried a lot of MMO games and keep coming back to gw2. I've played since gw1 and the things she said about the community hold true. Generally speaking there is very little elitism. People are more than happy to help and want to see you do well in this game. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten complete strangers to help me though difficult sections of the game. That said, I will say buying the full game is totally worth it as that unlocks the gliding and mount mechanics. Something that once you see it, you will want desperately. lol.

I recently decided to give GW2 a shot since it popped up on Steam and I have to say, I am shocked at how good it is. So much so that I think it's tragic that I blew it off all these years.
I've played MMOs since '98 and have become increasingly disenchanted with the genre, perhaps somewhat because I've gotten older but I think it's primarily due to how the game design trend has changed over the years. GW2 however has been a breath of fresh air. The game has its flaws, to be sure, but the flaws I found here are old friends of a sort, such as the somewhat clunky menus. It has the feel of a classic MMO but polished with quality of life that stops short of dumbing the game down. Overall it just seems really well thought out, the emphasis on open world content really makes a difference in the experience compared to other MMOs.
Opinions will of course vary but objectively there are a lot of things done right here. I see what all the common complaints about MMOs are today and then I see this doing exactly what a lot of use MMO veterans say we want and I just have to think...damn, a lot of us missed the boat here. Better late than never I suppose.

Something that would have been interesting to discuss is, not making assumptions about a weapon's use. Such as, like with most new players, learning that a traditionally melee weapon, can actually be a ranged weapon depending on which profession is wielding it. Case in point, A greatsword wielded by a Mesmer is actually a ranged weapon with 4 skills having a range of 1200 and one at 450. As we see in this video, you were rushing to melee range before attacking.
Also, double wielding a weapon does have a purpose and actually has been done in some meta builds. But that's out of the scope of this video.

First of all, great video, good informational value overall, lovely reactions.
    Some corrections:
-you can pick yourself up from downed with skill 4
-game doesn't scale to party, it scales to area and it usually doesn't scale you all the way down. in a lvl 2 area you will probably be scaled to lvl 4
-some things you actually need to unlock with leveling, some the game just notifies you, it's a mix of both.
-there are actually builds that use 2 of the same weapon, but later on that, don't wanna spoil anything

  • @eleeyah4757
    @eleeyah4757 Рік тому

25:20 - You can pick yourself up, but only if you don't interrupt the heal. It's a rather long channel. Well, long inside combat. Outside combat, it gains efficiency and only takes three or four seconds to fully revive you.^^
One other thing: The greatsword's #1 does more damage the further away you are. Gotta balance that with needing to be close to other players to pick up any boons they radiate. Boons are GW2 buffs, and they're REALLY strong. If you get them properly stacked (requires multiple players), then you'll do like three times the damage.

Oh Captain Thackary, that charmer! ❤️ 😆 Welcome to game!! Great new player perspective. Love your video. So much information packed in it! Once you make it out of babytown, there's so much different content. Get into a good supportive friendly guild to pledge your allegiance to... or 5 lol ... and you'll have friends, knowledge and a great group to do events and guild activities with. Not all guilds are going to be what you're looking for. So try a few.
Karma can be used to buy items for collections that give you specific items weapons armour or materials or to buy such items directly that are not just cosmetic, including items/materials on the quests such as your mount quests. Karma is worthwhile to accumulate.
For JPs there's an item called a position rewinder which lol I believe you have to do JPs to acquire 😆 and i recall it being a true challenge. So fun watching you go through it as a newbie.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone complain about GW2 UI being unintuitive or dated for that matter. In fact its often described as timeless because of the art style. Just let the game teach you don't pour over all the advanced features which were added later for endgame players when you've only unlocked 3 buttons. There are very few things the game does a bad job of explaining probably the biggest culprit being combo fields.

27:25 yes you will find that the community is rather helpful. Longest I've spent I believe, is like 45 minutes to an hour trying to help some people through a jp. Wanted nothing in return but them getting whatever they needed. Many people will literally die trying to get you up during fights. Multiple times if that's what it takes. Can be a detriment to the fight itself at times, but we all live or we all die. There is no in-between with some of us.... sometimes.
Anet did an amazing job in how the game heavily focuses on cooperation instead of competition. Heck it took years for me to fully get out of the mindset of not tagging other people's mobs. Just going about my way to find my own. Now a natural reaction for me is to tag and if I see people coming to do the same. Stopping all damage so as many people as possible can get a hit in for credit. Game can really bring out the best of folks.

49:00 - Me, with my Mirage double wielding staff build 👀
About the mesmers and their portal service, it's so cool that they truly help out of the goodness of their heart, but they also accept donations. Donations. Not fees or prices. Optional donations. Any kind is appreciated: copper, silver, gold, items, random foods etc! Among my fondest memories, there is this time I portaled some low lvl players on a jumping puzzle and one mailed me 1 silver, the other 5 cake pieces and the last one did not attach anything but wrote a kind hearted message.
Also, sometimes I receive random mails from players complimenting my outfit, or mailing me food because they are cooking enthusiasts. Truly special community this game has.
Oh, and last but not least the questing here, I love it so much, co-op and not competitive, meant to be completed together rather than seeing other potential players as cold blooded rivals waiting to steal your precious mobs needed for x quest.
    It's overall very enjoyable.
PS: I've spent absolutely unholy ammounts of gold, resources and time with fashion, both doing activities and collection for an outfit... it's amazing how you can choose whatever you want to do in this game and have fun with it.

Actually the role play choices made during character creaton do effect your personally story, and they play a part in later parts of the story where choices must be made, and how you interact with npc within the story (charm, ferocity, dignity).
For some NPCs how you interact with them can either increase how much they either like, tolerate, or hate you. The only way you know how an NPC feels about you is to pay attention to how they treat you and how that may or may not change over time with additional interactions.
(edit 1: in down state if you spam skill 4 you can heal yourself while in downstate if there are no low health enemies around for you to kill to rally yourself back onto your feet.)
(edit 2: something worth noting is that Mesmer greatsword skills are ranged attacks and do more damage the further you are from your enemy while still being "in range" of the enemy.)
Sorry, if I came across offensive or some other not nice adjective. I'm a mentor and commander in-game and I tend to go into teach-mode when I see new player on youtube.

GW2 deserves to be so much more popular than it currently is.
One of the very few still ethical MMOs that respects their customers, and doesn't use manipulative methods to get good "daily player engagement ratio" stats.
The only MMO where i login because i want to play, and not because i have to, so i don't fall behind on their drip-fed capped daily progression.
With a world design that should be an example for all MMO developers. It rewards exploration with Hidden paths, jumping/dexterity puzzles, vistas, quizzes, verticality and underground mazes, hero challenges, etc.
It also treats your character like an adult instead of a pickup/deliver errand boy.
You see it - you go do it - you get rewarded and the world changes accordingly.
(Although, i know people who didn't like this approach and prefer to have their hand held. "So what do i do now?" Well, open the map and put one foot in front of the other.)
I also like that you don't have as many abilities.
Firstly because i'm not an excited 20yo any more who plays the piano with the controls as if on coke,
and also because you have to choose carefully which abilities and weapons to equip, sort of like making a card deck.
In my case, a lazy ranger slotted with only "passive abilities" who just shoots at things. Kinda like vanilla--wow frost mage.
(The small number of abilities however results in many of them being a clusterfuck, like for example "deals X physical damage, and X elemental damage over 8'', applies 3'' slow, 1'' daze, 1.2'' blind, gives you 3.75'' of protection and 4.25'' of regeneration. Well, good luck with all that)
It's also nice that the game offers an "action camera" mode if you don't like tab-targeting.
PS: Not sure if Rage copies the way Josh narrates or the other way around. Or maybe it's just a s British thing.

25:25 actually as someone else in the comments also mentioned, skill 4 will fully revive you as long as you are not being attacked ( you just interrupted it yourself by spamming skill 1 again); also that icon in the bottom right would NOT have revived you because you already levelled up in the past, that icon is simply the reward you didn't claim yet. The moment you level is when you get the bright burst of light around you and your xp bar at the bottom hits the full and resets. In down state only use skill 1 if there is any monster around that you can kill, that either has low health or is of low level. In any other case try to heal with skill 4 and distract or keep the boss busy with your other skills. When you are attacking a monster in down state an ally can either help you by attacking the same monster and kill it quickly, or revive you. If he revives you it's often a good idea to stop attacking with skill 1 but use skill 4 instead to speed up the revive (unless you have a monster targeted that is about to die).

I'm playing through Path of Fire, and this is the most fun I've had in an MMO ever, even counting the GW1 days and the old Diablo 2 days. As soon as I got the raptor mount, I was hooked, and it just gets better from there. The skimmer is probably the most fun I've ever had navigating a map in any game, it handles like a good car from GTA V. It literally drifts, its so ridiculously engaging. I also still don't find myself skipping through anything, I'm always stopping to marvel at the gorgeous environments and I rarely find myself bored when playing the story.
The Tomb of Primeval Kings and Kormir's library are my favourite parts of the game so far, I was blown away by the detail that they put in. I may even go back and play that episode again after I finish PoF, just so I can try out all the different mounts flying around that library. Its unbelievably gorgeous.
Heart of Thorns was great, but very frustrating in parts, even for people who have played the base game for a while. It was a nightmare when it first came out, it was like trying to navigate an actual rainforest with a glider and a map that might as well be a crayon drawing because of the verticality. Also, everyone was terrified of encountering the dreaded pocket raptors. They're still ridiculous, but Anet scaled it back a bit from what it was and made Tangled depths a bit better than it was.
If you get stuck on it and aren't a hardcore 'start to finish, no spoilers' kinda player, skipping to PoF and getting a mount helps alot. Raptor with canyon jump helps a lot, and I haven't tried it with the skimmer yet, but I bet it would be laughable, let alone with a skyscale or a griffon.

To understand some of this game you really should look at some videos of Guild Wars (gw1). Vast in lore, same game account for both games, tied in other ways too. No quests, no kill stealing as in other games. The achievements don't make any sense at first but a lot of them are tied to seasons and expansions, good loot from some and also the AP points lead to other reward chests.
One thing you do need to look at is Metabattle which has builds for PVE, Fractals and Dungeons, WvW, PvP, Raid and Strike, WvW Zerg. A must have link for any player. I use GW2Taco also which is launched once you are in game, this has timers etc for bosses and other things too as this is a very big game in terms of information etc. So much to remember. Rewards are many from achievements, if you want you could craft and level to max level without even exploring.
And then don't forget the festivals. Way too much to go into.
The UI has changed so much now over the past 10 years. I got the Edition on launch which has the Rytlock Brimstone statuette thing, art concept book etc. Was best thing I got. I would advise anyone getting the expansions to do the seasons in order with the expansions, as I am aware some may just go for the mounts first if they buy the expansions. There is so much to actually that it will take a very long time to really get all the achievements for example.
Also, do not forget the books for inbetween GW1 and GW2 which explains some of the game and characters you will meet.
GW1 is set 250 years BEFORE GW2 and your character was or is supposed to be the ancestor of your GW1 character. Something like that.
Fighting a CHILD? now you will have the Asuran community out for your blood to run their Golem and Leystone experiments with. Rather you than me, I like my ankles, they are useful to me.
Vistas, watch carefully and you will see players running around and even run to the Vista point you are on as the camera pans away, might even see yourself getting attacked, so it is NOT Cinematics, it's actual real time game play.
As for getting intoi Lion's Arch on Free Account, that is around level 35, buying the game is level 20. The Trading post is also limited on Free Account also to help prevent gold spammers, also, thinking about it, it is a one off payment with different editions. Ultimate is around say £80 but that also means you get around £42 of gems for the TP, which can be sold for ingame gold or bought with ingame gold not just real money. So they actually make it easy inm many ways to get cash shop items with no cash at all, you just need time. Very intelligent design for an mmo if you ask me.

If you want to know how the game has evolved over the ten years then head on over to Woodenpotatoes channel as he has some very indepth videos on things. Legendaries have changed from using the mystic toilet to get precursors to using achievement tracks instead. We called it the mystic toilet as you could put 2,000 or more longbows, for example, into it in the hope of getting just the precursor weapon, then you had to work out how to make the legendary from that, hence the name and the amount of gold spent.

Base game combat is easy. Button mashing is usually good enough. Occasionally take some time to review weapon abilities and how those abilities can be chained together for even more power! This is easily one area where the game throws you into the deep end of the pool and says "Good Luck!" Fortunately, the excellent GW2 wiki gives you so much information about skill chaining that with a little perseverance it will become quite simple. Better yet, ask guildmates about it and they'll help with the details. I mention all this because combat in the expansions becomes significantly dependent on NOT mindlessly button mashing. At the same time, the combat is more rewarding.

I will say watching someone else go through the beginning player experience makes me want to dive back in again to GW2 as it reminds me of all the fun I had falling off of jumping puzzles, wandering around doing random hearts and events. There is a lot of fun to be had exploring in GW2!

Always happy to welcome a new player to Tyria. I was reintroduced to this game by my fiancee two years ago, and it's since become one of my favorite titles.

FYI the higher the level of the area the longer the world event battles take. So you won't be coming up on close to end events nearly as often.

Me: Someone hasn't played SWTOR Male Consular, I see. Wanna be an old emotionally dead man with a twenty year old body? Play that class...

47:12 ... if you are experienced and have a good solo all build, yea PVE open world is pretty ez cheezy.. al lvl 80 you can solo all champions.. and solo several legendary bosses or duo them ... but before you did get this good it does generally speaking mean you put quite some fun time into the game. Quests however are never hard, though lvl 80 quests do get more challenging. High levels fractals / strikes / raids can not be soloed. (for tryhards small parts of it can). And when you get this good of being able to solo most pve open world stuff you might also enjoy to start PVP and WVW.
