  • These rolls are perfectly fluffy and the sugar glaze makes it just a little more special... they could have used a boatload more cinnamon though...(In my humble opinion).
But really, for a wartime ration recipe, I would have no issue coming home from a hard day of work and stuffing my face with these. It is a great base recipe - great texture and not a bad flavor. The spice game was a little weak, but I feel that housewives who got to know this recipe would have put thier own little spin on it and perhaps have given it a little more spice that the original recipe called for.
OR like I did after I finished filming... I added all the spice to the sugar-butter glaze and ohhhhhhhhhhhh man. That did it. IT WAS SO GOOD. Especially paired with a cuppa.
I hope you enjoy! AND than you all for getting this channel to 500 subscribers!!! It really kind of blows my mind to think that I am not the only one who nerds out on this stuff lol. I've seen so many examples of vintage recipes where the flavors are... underwhelming. Maybe spices weren't widely available or were prohibitively expensive, or maybe folks just weren't ready for intense flavors (I know it took a long time for garlic to be an accepted in the US). Anyway, I like your idea of adapting and improving the recipe. And I'm glad to hear the additions to the glaze helped!

I think you might be right...and really our modern palette is pretty used to flavors from all over the world. Back then (rationing didn't help) and before people just didn't travel as much ci think there was also not a lot of knowledge past the seasonings you grew up with. I think it's definitely worth trying these old recipes and making adjustments as needed...because as a base recipe they're pretty good!
