What a despicable man, he kidnaps an elderly lady then kills her THEN says he threw her over a bridge like a piece of garbage, THEN admits the truth. Pity that they had taken the death penalty off the table, which should have been back on the table when he lied about how he killed her. I feel so sorry for her husband who was the object of suspicion for so long by his friend and community. You never recover from that doubt and suspicion.

Two years later my dad paid a visit to his home right when this investigation was going on. When the news broke that Charles was the one responsible for this horrific crime he was crushed. There were two cases I know of here in Australia where the behaviour of the victims was considered odd and therefore guilty. One was Lindy Chamberlain whose baby was taken by a dingo and based purely on her attitude in media interviews she was in jail for three years until evidence was discovered that proved her innocence. Another was Joanne Lees whose boyfriend was murdered and his body never found. She was very courageous and managed to escape from the killer but her surly attitude attracted suspicion. Thank goodness she didn’t end up in jail but the unfounded suspicion continues to this day, even though the killer was found with her DNA on him. The media has a lot to answer for with its sensationalised reporting, and the public can be quick to form a lynch mob if, God forbid, a victim doesn’t act the way they’re supposed to act.

The movies give the dramatic, scream and cry is not actually realistic.
Many people go into a silent shock whilst their brain processes the tragic situation, you also depending on circumstance may not really believe what has happened.
Especially older people I think, when your younger you may have a more emotional reaction. Also your personality, life experience, job, male/female, culture and so on, impact how you react to tragic things.

I couldn't cry, even at his funeral. Trying to be strong for my children and grandchildren. I felt nothing, just empty. Then about 6 weeks one evening I just fell apart and couldn't stop crying. Couldn't hardly get my breath. My daughter thought I had a bad dream, but I wasn't sleeping. Then I went into depression for a very long time. My world was upside down. It still hits me like that out of nowhere. Been 13 years and recently had a spell of crying my heart out. ❤ I miss him so much in my life in the physical world. 😢. I think it will always be that way. I have alot of happiness in my life, but doesn't stop the ever lasting longing to have him here. Sometimes grieving never stops, I believe that. I never judge anyone else's pain. It's difficult and different for everyone 😕 I 🙏 pray for everyone who has had a great loss in their life. It's the hardest part of life, no doubt. Blessings 🙌 for everyone 🙏

He planned the crime for 4 months and prepared the grave ahead of time. His wife was home during the entire time but never noticed anything because Lord kept Mrs. Roberts tied up in a room above a garage on his property. It appears as though she might have been, but it wasnt reported that she was.
Not to get too graphic, her arm could've been bent across her mid section and with shovel fulls of heavy dirt and other things thrown on top of her could've moved her hand up to that location.
Let's hope and pray she was deceased before she was buried by monster that was supposedly her and her husbands friend.

True. A career criminal never lives wisely; they are incapable of it, which is why they commit crimes in the first place. In addition to what they inflict on others, they are essentially self destructive. However, I believe that Mr Lord was one of the minority of offenders who is a psychopath. As such, he does two things: he does a broad range of crimes and he primarily enjoys duping people. The church is a favorite place psychopaths like to hide for this reason.

Imagine them listening as he confessed his homicides in court, step by step, clearly relishing the entire process.Massive betrayal. Having worked with offenders, I developed a very jaundiced view on the subject.
I don't question the offender who, over the course of time, gradually finds an ethical system with which to rebuild their life whatever that may be. Malcolm X was an example of someone who used religion in a constructive way to rebuild his life.
But unfortunately what I saw too much of the time was religiosity ( versus genuine piety) as a tool to control, manipulate and rationalize their crimes to themselves. Instantly, upon BEGINNING to serve their sentence, murderers and sex offenders make up the bulk of attendees at Bible study. Clearly, this is fake. Look at Tex Watson, Manson's henchman, who instantly began a prison ministry! Where is the humility here??? It seems to be tied to a wish and need to feel tied psychologically to an omnipotent figure who grants entitlement to do what they please to other human beings: "I'm saved"= end of accountability. Religiosity versus genuine piety is used as a mechanism to maintain and develop what is essentially a criminal personality. List was a despot and a massive narcissist who saw his family as props for his own puff piece, rather than as human beings. When asked why he didn't commit suicide rather than admit to his family that he had been fired, he said "Well but then I wouldn't go to Heaven!"

This is an incredibly SAD history. It is Lucky and inspiring that law enforcement, including the FBI, were so dedicated, and willing to expend so much effort and money, and risk, to find Doe Roberts. HEARTBREAKING, and astounding criminality of Mr Lord.

All the evidence was circumstantial though. *Could* the kidnapper have called Lord and told him to pick up the money? Sure. Lord was the guy the husband picked as the go-between. A kidnapper might well add in extra steps to try to confuse law enforcement watching the payment. If I was on the jury with the evidence they had at that point, I'd be convinced that he did it, but I don't think I could have convicted him.

I'm at the point in the Story where the Husband took a lie detector test and showed no deceptions and the FBI couldn't rule him out even though there wasn't ANY evidence. That's why you don't take it. There's no upside.

There is upside. There are plenty of cases on this channel where the polygraph actually pointed them to the criminal (in fact, it was right in this case too).
In this case, it seems like they made a theory and just wanted the polygraph to support it. In that case, there might be no upside but refusing to take it would also be taken as evidence of guilt.
