Kayak camping and traveling the Atchafalaya River
Leaving our perfect spot we say goodbye to the Atchafalaya River and head into the Yellow Bayou.
We get a little touristy checking out the area but really enjoy the paddle down to Calumet.
The path to the Gulf is Yellow bayou to Wax Lake Cut off to Hog Bayou to Burns Point/the Gulf. Wax Lake is a very long straight channel. Seems as though you could paddle for ever over the horizon.
Hog Bayou is a little more wild but ended up being the busiest stretch we came across. Being hunting season there were boats cruising all over to check their lines making it a little risky being in the kayaks. The boats came around the bends very fast obviously not expecting kayaks to be in the area.
We really learn what a different world we are in here in Southern Louisiana. The animals, the culture and the plant life is all new and exciting.
I have such a strong desire to head back down with a proper flat bottom boat and explore the bayous. This is such a neat area that I could spend weeks filming, fishing, camping. Very cool place!!!
Thanks to everyone who was part of making this trip possible!

I really liked this series of videos. I was thinking about taking the Atchafalaya for my trip to Texas and now I think I will. I'll be saving some time going that way vs going through New Orleans. I intend to go down the mississippi, take the Atchafalaya to the gulf intracoastal waterway and take that to Galveston.

o yeah, this would save a ton of time. NOLA is a long way east from the Atch

Great series, thanks. Does Anne have a channel?
So rude when people think there motors rule the world around them. I would never treat that way. If you are the QE 2 I bet they would think different.

I am glad you enjoyed! No, Ann does not have a channel, unfortunately! She does a lot of paddling! I dont put too much blame on that boater that backed down on us, it is not normal to have paddlers in the swamps especially before daylight. He should have looked but I can see it from his point of view too. No one was hurt so we just moved on and enjoyed the rest of the trip.
Funny comment on the QE 2, when I got done paddling the whole Mississippi I stopped as the USS Kidd, a destroyer on the banks of the Mississippi in Baton Rouge. One of the comments I made was, "I wondered how my trip would have been different had I been commanding a destroyer rather than a kayak".

Jay, I'm going to paddle the Mississippi River starting June 5. This will be my second paddle down the river. I want to take the Atchafalaya River route. Could you tell me where you got your maps? Thanks and great videos. Mike Boehm

@@jakedrago7805 id like to catch a couple and see them. i got the sense they were massive. probably best i didnt know what was beneath my boat!

@@escapewithjay I actually had one come under me when on a paddle board it had to be 6-8 feet long didn’t cause any issue just was shocked by the sheer size of the creature underneath me . If you ever catch a big one try not to hurt them as they are often very old and they don’t make good eating. The popular “gar balls” are best from a smaller younger gar

@@jakedrago7805 No worries, I dont live close enough to go back and fish for them. I wouldnt know what to do with one anyways! Locally I generally catch and release and only fillet a catch if I cause a fatal injury. Not that I have anything against keeping them I just usually dont. You have any pics of them by chance?
