I have learned after I made this video that I used the filters in a wrong way, please read the comment section below how they should be used properly, Thanks! (learning by doing)
In this video I will try and see what some cheap macro lens filters can do for the Nikon P1000 when it comes to getting closer to the objects.
I will try the filters on a strawberry and also a flower.

Just wanted to make things even more clear. If you are using, let's say the +4 closeup filter. The FL of this lens is 1/4 Meter, or 25 cm if you prefer. If you start at min FL of the P1000, you can obtain focus anywhere up to 25cm. (And I don't recall if that is 25cm from the sensor or 25cm in front of the lens - trial and error will answer that question). I think the 2nd choice is the correct one. You can measure the FL of the closeup lens outside by letting sunlight go through it and adjusting the distance for the smallest concentration of light falling on the ground. And if you measure that distance, you have the FL of that closeup lens.
If you go to max FL of the P1000, there is just one point that you can obtain focus, and that is exactly at 25cm. It is very difficult to work with this FL since the drop off on either side of 25cm is steep. If you are the tiniest bit too close, or too far, you cannot obtain focus. As you reduce the P1000 a bit, you create a wider window where you can obtain focus, but the magnification will be less. But you are in a more forgiving region of operation.
This continues, step by step, as you reduce FL and then area in which you can obtain focus continues to widen. At some point is a good compromise with acceptable magnification and acceptable working distance restrictions.
Good luck
outstanding of you thank you :
You are looking at using the closeup filters the wrong way. You have 4 diopters: +1, +2, +4, and +10. If using the +1 diopter, the optimum working distance is 1 meter. At exactly 1 meter, you can zoom in on the P1000 all the way to 3000mm equiv. FL. If you are a little farther than 1 meter, you won't achieve focus at all. If less than 1meter, you won't be able to zoom all the way to 3000mm equiv. FL And the closer you are, that max FL keeps decreasing.
Switching to the +2 diopter, its optimum working distance is 1/2 meter, and again the P1000 can zoom to 3000mm equiv. FL. And the same restrictions as above if you are farther or closer than 1/2 meter.
For the +4 diopter, the distance is now 1/4 meter with the same restrictions.
And finally, the +10 diopter, is 1/10 meter.
What these closeup filters give you is a means to provide a way to increase your working distance at the same time as getting magnification. This can help a lot with insects that don't want you getting too close.
I have used the P1000 with the Canon 500D closeup filter and the results are incredible when used at the optimum working distance, which for that filter is 1/2 meter.
And with that +1 diopter closeup filter, try setting up just a bit shorter than 1 meter to view ants and zoom in as far as you can and still obtain focus. The results will surprise you.
Thanks a lot for a very clear explanation 😀🙏🏽
I will absolutely make a new try with these 👍🏼
Good that I did not say I’m a professional 😂 This is just a hobby I have and yes I feel fascinated to see things that the eye normally doesn’t see 👍🏼
Will the Canon 77mm 500D deliver equal or better magnification than this kit? What about quality and sharpness. If I had to pick one, what do you recommend? Will I be able to stay farther away with this kit than I would with the Canon lens? Thank you!
Thanks for your explanation. I am wondering if it is necessary to put the Camera in the macro mode while I am using this kinds of the kits?
@@hancoban It is not necessary to put the camera into macro mode when using with the closeup lens. And perhaps that mode might not work well with the closeup lens too.
you are testing close focusing filters with a wide angle focal length.. it needs to be done with telephoto (zoom it in)
Thanks! Yes now I know how to use the fiters. I thought when I bought them that it was just to put them on. So I added in the text to read what JimH.... explained 🙂👌
outstanding :
Thanks! Be sure to read the comments from Jim to get better understanding of how to use the lenses correctly 🙃😇
i subscribe due to your honesty thank you :
How we can blur the background, in the P1000 background not getting blur...
Could you please record something regarding?
New sub From UK Love this video. I am asking for this P1000 for xmas 2023
Thanks, glad you like both the video and the camera, Really hpe you will get one, I love it (because I love zoom 🤩)
@@letszoomit365 L ove your Videos very fun xxxx Happy zooming
Please help me.I have Nikon D7500 and would like to made some food makro pictures (Bugs ants, mushroms etc) What is the best solituon what lens should i use and are under 300€ ? Thank you
Could you please try the same thing without putting white paper behind?
Let's see if the background will be defusing or what...
Hi, I had a lot of stuff behind and to get the trawberry in focus I choosed to use the white background but just like you say... evrything behind was very blurry because the depht of field was only some milimeters.
can i ask you a question please?
I bought a Nikon P1000 2 weeks ago, one thing I noticed is that in rooms/areas where there isn't much light, the LCD screen appears a bit "grainy". Is this normal in low light or should I be concerned?
Hi, it is normal, I just had to try to see what you meant and I think you mean when the camera bright up the the screen, but if you take a picture with low ISO and flash for example then the image will be good anyway. If use high ISO, 1600 or higher you will see noise in the image at the computer too if the area have low light, still not as much as in the screen. But short answer, yes, its normal, camera just bright up image live at teh screen so you can see what to photograph 🙂👍
Yes, that is normal. The P1000 is not a good low light camera. It works best when there are good lighting conditions.
I would have liked to attach an example image with good magnification, but I don't see that as an option on this page.
Feel free to comment with a link IF you have it online somwhere. I did not have time yet to try it out myself 🙂
But I am very thankful for your expertise 👍🙏🙏
It is easy to measure the focal length of each of your closeup lenses. You let the sun shine through it and form the smallest spot on the ground you can and then measure that distance. I have a set of Tiffen closeup filters and I did this on the +4 one and measured 22 cm instead of the expected 25cm. With that, I can compute diopters = 1000 / FL (in mm) = +4.55
I also have a set of the multi-element Minolta closeup lenses. They are called #0, #1 and #2. They are a better grade closeup lens and don't suffer from CA on the edges of the images. And the FL is exactly as indicated.
Also have the Canon 500d which is +2 and is 77mm thread size. It is also multi-element and it works great with the P1000.
If I had to pick one, which would you recommend? The Canon or the kit in the video? I'm interested in image quality and being able to shoot from father away. Thank you!
Can't you zoom in at that distance from the subject or it'll not focus if you zoom?
No, it looks (I did not know when filmed this one) like the 4+ for example where made to match a distance of 25cm to be used at its best so IF I had the distance of excatly 25cm from the sensor I think it would have worked better. You can read comments below from Jim Herr that explained I think everything about these type of lenses 🙂👍
ransom question.. you have tripod or monopod
Only use my tripod when use this camera 🙂👌
Använde du manuell och makro med autozoom ? 😃🤭
