    This is a really great rundown !
    I appreciate you taking the time to put this information together it was concise and it really highlighted both pros and the cons I just purchased this camera six months ago after trialling a couple of different superzoom bridge cameras and finally settled on the p950 I had been lugging around tons of gear just like yourself for years and it finally just got to the point where I thought to myself this is silly I'm lugging all this stuff around and hardly ever use all of it on a given outing so now I have one camera that I use for astrophotography which is a Pentax k1 Mark 2 and the other is the P950 which is wonderful for birds and just all arounder when our hiking

    I've been lugging big iron around for 50 years now, I love the gear but am on the verge of going to a bridge camera and this video has helped me make the decision. I won't miss the weight and I won't miss the sensor dirt. I will miss my super wide angle, but for the most part that can be done using pano techniques so I'll manage.
    Time to move on I think, and sell the big iron while it's still worth something.

    The silly zoom capability is amazing for just birdwatching too. I just haul this camera and a fluid head tripod around and get pretty much everything done with it. It's not the same as a full spotting scope but in a pinch it absolutely works fine for the purpose. If I went to an obs tower with a camera from which I'd have to crop out every image to see close details I'd also need a spotting scope which pretty much doubles the gear I'd have to carry. Another major win for a budget conscious birder who wants to see birds up close in real time!

    • @OctoBooze
      @OctoBooze Рік тому +1

      @@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE I'm not sure I can answer that since I don't take photos through the scopes so it's just down to eye feel and it's really hard to quantify. Both certainly work for the purpose but the P1000 takes the cake for ease of use, big screen and no need to hunch over the scope. I do prefer the analogue feel of not having computers or screens in between so I feel like I like the image of a scope better, but I have a hunch that's just my bias talking, not actual image clarity.
      Thanks for making those P1000 vids years ago, got me into the hobby in the first place! Channel has been an absolute goldmine for getting started with the camera and setting up for birding.

    Thanks for all the good info on settings etc. All the pros seem to agree the P1000's 4K video setting is comparable to vastly more expensive rigs. Bought a short rail mount by smallrig that really helps balancing on a tripod. I'm impressed with the almost tightest macro sharpness. Bought a LED ringlight just for that. Excellent! I purchased a used P900 for $450 and take it everywhere here in Montana and Alaska. I like it for posting on the web. Max shutter speed 1/4000.
    Because it is relatively inexpensive I take it canoeing, mountain biking, cross-country skiing and hiking in the rain and snow. With a tripod and 2-second delay, and adequate lighting, I've taken some nice bird shots, some long distance grizzly bear shots (> 300 yards) and some nice close-up of moose in our backyard.

Some of my best photos were taken with this rig, not because it's better than my larger sensor cameras (it's not) but because it's always quickly available to get the shot. Although much cheaper than my other set ups it has been by far the best investment I made.

    I just got my P1000 today and I am excited to start using it! I have been using a Canon 6D Mark II and the body and lenses get really heavy in a short time. I also can't get the zoom I would like for bird photography. With this camera, I will definitely be able to get closer with our disturbing the wildlife. It seems like for the price, the compromises are worth it! I want something that isn't too heavy that can give me a decent zoom! I also figure that I really don't print photos these days and post them online, so super high quality images aren't necessary to do that. Thanks for your review!

    I've had the P950 since December of last year and haven't used my Panasonic FZ300 since then. I feel sorry for my other camera. The only thing I envy with the gear head guys is getting those bird in flight shots so tack sharp. Otherwise I've gotten some outstanding photos from the P950. I shoot in RAW and the buffer does fill up quickly. Lately I've just been shooting in single mode and it helps that problem but makes it more possible to miss a better shot if the subject is moving. For what it's worth I also picked up an A1000. It hasn't been great for bird photos so far but I find it to be an excellent take along camera for supplemental shots like landscapes and reference shots, the quality is great. I'd love to see you do a video on just that camera and what you could get out of it in relation to wildlife photos, especially birds. Good information that is still relevant.

    Stafford, good to see you give the bridge cameras some more attention, one of the things that first attracted me to your channel. I had a P900 and liked the lens but hated the viewfinder and motor drive finding it either too fast with blackout or too slow. I have a Canon SX60hs that I take out and while you can't track birds in flight very well it does a great job on nesting birds and can shoot at least seven-FPS with what seems like an unlimited buffer with JPEGS. I know the Nikon P950 has fixed the viewfinder problem but I wondered about the motor drive options and the problem of blackout after a burst. Specifics? Great video.

    • @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE
      @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE  Рік тому +1

      I would say the performance is about the same as the p900 maybe a bit better. Viewfinder is much better more solid build it is nice but speed is the worse thing about the camera. It does lock up many times at the 27 jpeg buffer max. So to me I really have to watch the buffer and plan my shots. Hope this helps.

    • @brucegraner5901
      @brucegraner5901 Рік тому +1

      @@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE What motor drive speeds do you have with the P950? The Canon SX60 I mentioned has apx. 3fps continuous and then claims 10fps fixed but with no blackout and a huge JPEG buffer. As I remember the P900 had, maybe, 2 FPS (too slow) and, roughly, 9 FPS but with a blackout that could last three-four seconds following a burst. Just wondering how the P950 compared?

    • @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE
      @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE  Рік тому +1

      @@brucegraner5901 Sadly that has not changed that much maybe a little bit better. If I know I want a longer session I use that slow 2fps to 3fps. When I know there is a shot there I will burst 7 FPS, it blackouts for a bit then another 7fps then another. So timing is the key. It is the worse part of this camera system for sure. I work around it. It feels better than the p900 but not by much. Hope this helps.

    I am not a professional but if I didn't already have a Z80 and a Nikon A900 (which I bought after watching one of your videos a while back), I would get one. Another option I went with to get into bird/wildlife just for fun was using the Tamron 18-400 superzoom lens, there are both Canon and Nikon versions. I think I only paid $350 used and I paired it with a used Nikon D7100 which together was less than $800 total and really convenient to carry around. I love the content you put out and watch every episode, I'd be interested in what you thought of using something like the Tamron 18-400 lens compared to the P1000/P950. Actually, the 18-400 is a great lens. A total keeper. I did have a video planed on that lens. Probably try to make or remake the video. Again top notich as long as you get a sharp version. Most are sharp, i had one that was not. Hope this helps, but in comparison the 18-400 is on another level of image quality paired with an R10 or r7....

    I got a sony DSC-HX300 with 1200mm zoom. It is a bridge camera, with a tiny sensor, and a bit older. The video is only 1080p and not as sharp.
    I've had lots of fun with that one, and it brought me back to thinking about getting the P1000, this style of camera really fits me well for what I do. Even night photography does well with a steady enough tripod. I would love to have the 4k video and the nicer viewfinder from the P1000, plus the higher zoom?? I would be using that thing 24/7
    At the end of the day I find my joy of photographing in the challenge of figuring out how to get what you want with what you have. I have a full gallery of photos I took with my P30 Pro phone which has a 125mm optical zoom, and it did well for a while. This sony camera I'm currently using has served me well in taking shots of nice cars on the highway, handheld tracking the cars at 1/160 getting a nice blur on everything else around the subject.
    I'm no pro photographer but I'm always having fun with any camera.
    I'm so glad you made this video, with actual real life experience using these cameras and better ones. Everywhere I go to read about this p1000 camera everyone immediately shuts down the discussion due to the small sensor and dont even bother to look into what it is actually good at, your video is a rare gem!

    I have a P1000 too and if you use good photographic techniques it is amazing what this camera can do. People are now used to smart phone pictures so it is easy to impress with point and shoot camera shots. I make out it is a film camera and only use ISO 100, 200, and 400 on this camera, to try and wring the best performance out of it. I also bought a Hoya UV &IR cut filter to make sure only the “good” light gets into the sensor. I have taken great family portraits with this camera, scenes and also got a picture of Pluto with it. Pluto is only about 45 or so pixels but no other camera I know of could pull off something like that at 5.05 Billions kilometres away. Cheers.

      There are more and more better options out there, some even for very cheap (monocular and phone or any small sensor) to somewhat acceptable price (aps-c/mft camera and a long tele) ranging anywhere between 1000-3000$ camera+lens or more expensive „pro level“ like 600 F4 + 2x TC
      At least i could not go lower and slower than with my Canon RF 800 F11 to be honest, 1280mm native on 32MP APS-C, 2000mm in 4k60 crop and 2400mm with digital stabiliser, if i am more stationary or can care less about the weight i even take the 150-600 6.3 zoom (240-960mm)
      The thing is… even between 800 f11 and 600 F6.3 or even stopped down to F7.1 or F8, the difference is noticable regarding to the aperture and so the subject separation from foreground and background. The P1000 has an effective look of 24mm F16 to 3000mm F45. Absolutely no room for nice bokeh except in macro usage with longer focal length where the P1000 can be actually very good and uncomparable to most cameras

I have both cameras and prefer the p950 for moving around and the p1000 for sitting and zooming. Image quality is close but Id say overall the p1000 a tad better. Super versatile camera once you accept its limitations due to its small sensor. I bought it at launch (coming from a P900) and bought a second one years later (long story). I was using a DSLR + long lens before but its weight and size was taking away from the enjoyment of the activity. I use the P1000 even for night photography and camera trapping and have been satisfied with the results.

      As of right now it’s very unlikely. There’s still somewhat of a “chip shortage” and arnt focusing to much on bridge cameras. They are focusing a lot on the full frame stuff. I think if you got this camera you wouldn’t have buyer’s remorse as I don’t see Nikon coming out with an upgraded version anytime soon.
      If they did come out with a newer model I would assume it would be the same zoom but better way of life features and a better sensor. Also it will probably be north of 1000$ as well

Do you have a video on setting up the camera with respect to videos of birds. This camera struggles to focus when record is on and we zoom in. I am thankful i didnt buy the P1000 many years ago, in the end it was too expensive for me and the fixed lens was also partially an issue coming from a DSLR and having a few Canon full frame lenses.
    It took me many more years to get hands on good reach for wildlife, but i got it with the Canon RF 800 F11 for a pretty good price and also lightweight/small. I really appreciate the modern, very nice stabilizer, the really good autofocus (for its price) and its optical performance in general. Added later a Sigma 150-600C for video (on tripod) and regular birding/wildlife which can even perform better than the RF 800 (but only on a tripod, Sigmas stabilizer is VERY BAD)
    This type of camera (P900, P1000,...) just isnt right for me. I prefer to really go lightweight in some cases with primes or small universal zooms as well, i dont need, i would not even want always a 3000mm zoom lens on the camera in general (because its long and heavy)
    My most preffered setup yet (sadly sold...) was the EOS RP + RF 50 1.8. The RF 50 barely came off this camera except i did wildlife or astro or needed something else than 50mm only. Amazing performance, full frame, yet super small and light. For wildlife i had the RF 800 F11, for other stuff i adapted my old EF glass. The EOS RP did so well in anything (Astrophotography with primes or automated on the telescope, for family and travel stuff, for "serious" photography, partially even for wildlife, also usable in 1080p video) but for wildlife and (slowmo) video i was "downgrading" to the APS-C EOS R7.

If these manufacturers want to survive in this cellphone generation they need to sell a lot of gear every year.

      Key word is some, I use an S21 Ultra myself and I do get some great shots out of it from the 3x and 10x lenses but the sensors are absolutely tiny, even as far as smartphones are concerned and the 10x just becomes mushy after a 2x crop and so the camera software oversharpens to compensate for that, making for a horrible image, not to mention, burst shooting images is basically impossible at 10x and the focus hunts way too much if your subject is in challenging lighting and is constantly on the move
      For everything else and most of my street photography needs, the S21 Ultra does fine, it is afterall the camera I have on me all the time and for most scenarios it works out
      But for wildlife, I'm seriously considering picking up either the P950 or P1000, leaning towards the 950 for the sake of portability 😊

My Sony HX400V just crapped out (lens stabilizer ribbon wires broke) after years of great fun. I've always wanted to have a P1000 but for me it was really expensive that time and also I was strictly advices against point and shoot by the friends.
    So ultimately I went into Canon 200D and a 55-250 IS STM telephoto. Than struggled long time until got 200-500 Tamron lens for very cheap. Unfortunately it gave me very little to no additional details on the long end and given the age, weight, no IS, it was not worth buying. I also bought MTO 1000 Soviet 1000mm lens, but it was not worth buying too.
    Well you know - buy nice or buy twice. Anyway I went further to buy a telescope (I'm more to planets tham birds) but it's u comparably bulkier than p1000.
    I finally decided to sell all that equipment and buy p1000 too. And maybe a better cell phone for short end photos.
    But yesterday I went to check p1000 and took my canon +55-250 and found unfortunate low number of additional details. Probably in the birding and very long reach Nikon did still better. But the amount of fine details I got on Canon at 400 eq. was nearly the same as Nikon at 2000 eq. in the sunny day. So I decided yet not to take that one and maybe r50 instead and keep 55-250 lens. So aps-c is also an option (maybe except birding)
