You all make me envious. While in the navy we were stationed in Baltimore Md. for a year. Coming back from town one night a bunch of us saw crabs on the dock pilings. We go a couple of trout nets and taped them on to long poles. Then we started netting the crab and put them in some wooden crates. We must have caught a hundred maybe more. In the morning I went to the mess deck and asked the head cook what they were going to have for dinner that evening. I told him about our crabs and then showed him as he didn't believe me. He asked our captain and he agreed. The captain even gave the head cook some money from petty cash to buy the "Old Bay Seasoning". So they cooked up all the crap and even the officers joined us for chow. It was great and something I will always remember. This was somewhere around 1973 or 1974.
Do you chum for bait when using the cast net? We would either mix bread, cheese and a little water to make dough balls, baseball size. Pitch them in where we will throw the net wait a few minutes and cast net in. Or we would make dough balls out of dry pet food. Love the cooking part of your post. I'm always looking for new ways of doing things like cooking. Thank you so much.

@@spaceace9680That's funny, we crab here in Florida, but when my neighbors son flys his plane down from MD every other month he brings down baskets of MD crabs he traps.
Our crabs are slightly taster but the MD crabs actually have slightly more meat on the same size as ours. Compared twice to dbl check.

As young boys we would chicken neck crab off a pier. When done we would freeze the bait for later use and reuse the chicken necks each time we went crabbing and the nastier & more rotten the chicken neck bait got the more the crabs loved it.
Also you can steam the crabs with beer and use vinegar for dipping back-fin meat and also melted drawn butter is good too.

New Orleans guy transplanted to VA chiming in... You should boil using Zatarain's Crab Boil. Old Bay is okay, but Zatarain's is the stuff. Also, if you use the cocktail sauce, a little dollop of horseradish helps spice things up. Mix that into the cocktail sauce, with a little lemon juice, and dip away. If you use the Zatarain's, you won't need any other spices. Trust me.

I like to do 8 minutes per pound at a full rolling boil for hard shellfish--like crabs, crawfish, and lobster. I'd say maybe 2 minutes for soft shellfish like shrimp, prawns, or de-shelled scallops and clams. I don't want to disparage your cooking methods, Heidi, but I think anything past 12 minutes might make the crabmeat a bit rubbery. I definitely don't like it squishy like you said, but I think there's a "happy medium" somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes. :) All that said, your husband is one lucky fella!

Find a regular grocery store, not the upper scale, have frozen leg quarters in 10 lb bags. Here, $7.99. Let set 2 days in a bucket, thawing and starting to spoil.
10lbs will do 5 traps unless you've a lot of pin fish, mangroves, etc small enough to fit through the bait compartment mesh.
Soak atleast 48 hours minimum, I do 72-96 hours depending on the pins etc finishing off the bait.
Yep, steam 20 or boil like they prefer here in Florida 10-12.

The crabs went crazy for chicken it was wild lol. Oh by the way we were using just hooks and a fishing line to catch them.

you don't need a "trap door" on the bait cage. You cram the bait in there and drop the pot in the water....the bait hole opening facing the bottom of the creek......the bait will stay in there and when the pot sets on the bottom that'll keep the bait in place.

Hey guys the cardboard flats 6 packs of canned beer or sodas come in are great for eating shell fish out of or using them to put your empty shells and trash in while eating. Then toss them in the trash. They’re easy to store until needed.

10-12 minutes 20 at the most after you see the steam, let it rest for 15-20. Throw a couple chopped onions and corn on top at the start. Bonus!
