I realize that part of the reason Dae-su cut off his tongue was for talking too much, but in my opinion, Dae-su also cuts off his tongue because Woo-jin said it was, "his tongue" that got his sister pregnant which lead her to disassociating herself with life, so as an apology he was getting rid of that part of himself
I thought he cut it so that he could never speak the truth to her...
@@mrhalish that’s a great interpretation, you could be right, love how movies like this are done and can be left up to the viewer how to see it
You're both probably right^^@@mrhalish
Not Bad, but it's definitly because all started with him talking to other students
An absolute Masterpiece of the 1st order.
Just brilliant how the audience is played so well.
One of the greatest films of all time. Thanks for the reaction!
Anyone reacting to this is a real one. 👍
It's crazy to think that me, who live in Brazil, so far from Korea and with a distant language, had the chance to watch this incredible film. In celebration of the 20th anniversary of this classic, new copies of the film went to the cinema and I watched it months ago in my city (Curitiba). Like you, I didn't have that much information and I went mainly out of curiosity. During the film, I was taken by this crazy and surprising story. The ending is incredible, the culmination of this fantastic story. I left the cinema shocked, a feeling I've rarely felt, a script that initially doesn't make any sense, but it became increarebly fantastic. Action, fights, breathtaking violence, romance. OMG, 10/10!
I wish Hollywood could take risks and tell more absurd or different stories like this. Every movie you watch nowadays is just more of the same. And old boy is just an amazing movie with a unique plot that no one is ever expecting, and it comes from the other side of the world (I'm also brazilian). And the acting... Omg the acting in this movie is unreal
@@luanhenrique8733 다음 작품은 신세계(2013)를 추천합니다. 올드보이의 주인공이 출연합니다.
I see myself 20 years ago in the way you reacted to this movie. I wasn't sure throughout the movie but I was blown away by the end and everything just clicked. "Oldboy" is part of a trilogy about vengeance, the others being "Sympathy for Mr Vengeance" and the other is "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance".
“Once you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films” -Bong Joon-ho
Also, this is one of my FAVORITE MOVIES to show unsuspecting movie buffs so I can just WATCH the looks on their faces as the credits roll. 😁
One of my top 20 films and I have seen it several times. I loved your review, genuine and frank as it is so hard to stay on track the first time, especially with the subtitles and time jumps. Your review was TOP. EXCELLENT.
Fun Behind the scenes fact: The ending was filmed in New Zealand at the same time Lord of the Rings was filming.
Fun Behind the scenes fact 2: At the end, in the ending scene where there is a close-up of snow, the New Zealand crew prepared and sprinkled snow made of Styrofoam, but when it was said that it was strange that the beads did not melt on the skin and flowed down, there was a debate as to what the problem was, as it was used in Lord of the Rings and Vertical Limit without problems. . At that time, the lighting director came up with a method of breaking the real snow into small pieces from above and sprinkled it on the spot, and one of the New Zealand staff members followed the lighting director to Korea, saying he wanted to learn the job. When actor Choi Min-sik was asked about his emotions while performing his last laugh, he told this secret story and said that in fact, it was very difficult to capture his emotions because the eyes were being carved very loudly from above.😂
Yay! I’m so glad you liked it! I recommend his other movie “The Handmaiden” , it’s excellent, beautifully shot. Park Chan Woo is a master!
I think that last shot of Dae-su was meant to be "the monster" based on the shot of his monster persona when she's describing the two personalities. Meaning the hypnosis didnt work and he's left remembering everything.
The monster walked away and he woke up in the snow away from where he was.
I swear I get chills whenever a movie fan goes into this blind. This shit is WILD.
You nailed it when you said this film is perfectly written. Watching it the first time I was expect the usual revenge story, but instead got a dark, twisted mystery that goes places you hoped it wasn't going, especially with the sex scene. Combo that with "twisted present" scene in the climax the just left you feeling scummy. Bro, you reacted almost exactly like I did on my first watch at that twist. Welcome to the club, brother.
Hell yeah! This was a pleasant surprise. Can't wait to see your reaction.
I never ever thought you would watch this movie so Kudos! Hell yeah. Keep these Korean movies coming and keep these cult classic hardcore twist and emotional movies in your queue. Thank you!
THIRST from Park Chan Wook. You have to watch that Vampire movie. Amazing.
Also:
The Wailing
A Tale of Two Sisters
I Saw The Devil
The Man From Nowhere
Memories of Murder
Oh sh😅t, had the same kind of reaction, just stunned, and no words. 🙏🙏🙏 and needing a moment after. INCREDIBLE! 👏🎬
💯
Well, it’s getting a rerelease cuz it’s the 20TH ANNIVERSARY of the film’s original release.
This movie BLEW ME AWAY when I originally watched it. It’s STILL (probably) in my all-time top 10.
The one-shot hallway fight is STILL one of the most incredible fight sequences I’ve EVER SEEN. It’s not hyper-kinetic or choreographed to a tee; it feels RAW and kinda CLUMSY like an ACTUAL STREETFIGHT would feel.
One of my absolute favorite films. If you want to see another great South Korean film Memories Of Murder by Bong Joon Ho is a masterpiece.
Yeah, I agree; it's such a haunting ending! Also, you add to this one, "I saw devil"
Yes, one of my favorites as well.
@@andrew_golubev One of my absolute favorite films as well
2003 was such a big year for South Korean cinema. Three of the greatest Korean movies ever made were all released in that same year: Oldboy, Memories of Murder, and Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring - this last one is my personal favorite of the three. It's a shame there's no reaction whatsoever of it on UA-cam yet.
@@krautgazer Haven’t seen the last one but I’ve heard of it
Now there's "Parasite" and "I Saw the Devil"
This is in my top 3 movies of all time. The acting when he cut his tongue off is one of the best ever. This movie is part of this director’s trilogy of vengeance. It’s part 2. Part one is sympathy for mr. Vengeance. Part 3 is sympathy for lady vengeance. None of the movies are related. Part 3 will be the most disturbing to watch.
One best movie of all times.
During that scene..the fact he got distance and to the end of the hall so that all the guys he was fighting were in one direction..thats some high level shit..thats rule number one if you are facing multiple guys in a fist fight...well besides just running away
Ur a legend just for reacting to this movie, not everyone has heard of it. Mind blowing film
This movie is wild.
Here's are some masterpiece Korean movies you might want to check out
Parasite, Memories of Murder, I saw the devil, New World, The Wailing, Decision to Leave, Joint Security Area, Burning, Train to Busan, The Host
Chingoo(2001), a bittersweet life
It killed me when you were like "She's connected to the plot in some deeper way", I was like 'Oh yeah my guy!!!' 😂😂😂 Nah this the most diabolical shit I've ever seen on film. I watched the first Saw in the theater and didn't think I'd ever be more disturbed by a movie than that. And this is an older movie, I didn't see it until 2019 I think, and damn smh...talk about hurt people hurt people...
This is my favorite movie : )
I like "I saw the devil" too
Bravo homie!!.love the reaction. This film never gets old. This isn't one of those you just whip out on family or certain friends without consent. Lol. Thank you for your content.
Se7en: I have the most disturbing box revealing sequence
Oldboy: Hold my scissors
South Korean horror suspense films rarely have a happy ending! I'd recommend "The Wailing". My favorite Korean film. Train To Busan is also pretty solid.
Now you got to do Lady Vengeance and Sympathy for MR.Vengeance. It’s a trilogy.
Great reaction! This is one of a trilogy, known as "The Vengeance Trilogy", by the director Park Chan-wook. You should watch the other two, as well.
Dude Watch "I saw the Devil" next It has the same actor in it its amazing!!!
Has anyone seen the Hollywood remake? I cannot imagine they would go to the places the original goes to. I can’t bring myself to watch it.
I really love Lady Vengeance too.
Dude you have to check out Lady Vengeance, it's the same Director, Writer and the Dae Su actor is also in it.
It's just as horrific as this film.
Another film is I Saw the Devil, which is just as shocking and incredible, which also has the Dae Su actor, Choi Min-sik.
And finally The Wailing and Audition, are two South Korean and Japanese horror films that will leave you in awe and just as disturbed as Old Boy.
Can I recommend another Korean masterpiece I Saw The devil, Choi Min Sik is chillin in that.
Shout out for watching foreign films subtitled and not dubbed!
glad to see someone who understands / gets the movie on its literally value (in line with classic ancient Greek tragedies) as opposed to the 8th grade level of how 'gross' it is (referring to the incestuous aspect that is the tree making up the tortured, deeply intricate psyche of revenge wrapped within revenge tale which is the forest). worthy reaction to one of a kind movie to come out for ages to come-
If you're looking for another movie by the same director, one which I haven't seen myself but is always mentioned up there with Oldboy is The Handmaiden. Might be worth checking out.
U need to watch The Chaser and I saw the devil, same actor in both movies and both are masterpieces
Beside Parasite thats the best korean movie of all time!
I really recommend the other two of the Vengeance trilogy and also I Saw the Devil
23:00 that moment
This is actually the third movie of the Vengeance trilogy by Park Chan Wook. Please check out Sympathy for Mr Vengeance and Lady Vengeance. They are not connected to each other.
I think Old Boy was released a few years before Lady Vengeance?
@@BainesMkIIyou're correct. Old boy was the middle. Sympathy for mr vengeance is the first, oldboy is second, lady vengeance third.
Great reaction
i've found hollywood remake version on you tube and watched it. thanos and scarlet witch's in it
Please don't taint your memory of this film, as so many have unfortunately done, by watching the atrocious Spike Lee remake. It is unquestionably Spike Lee's worst film, which isn't saying much cuz he usually makes good films. But his rendition of this masterpiece makes me feel like either he had it ghost-directed or just straight-up phoned it in. Perfect reason to never remake someone else's work. Makes you seem lazy and just pisses off fans of the original. Stay far away, bruh.
Saw the remastered edition this week ,, good times.
Glad to see a UA-cam reacter do something other than regular Hollywood crap for once!
I love HW now don't get me wrong!
Love your reactions man
Ending is controversial
Some people thinks Dae-Su smiles and cry because he doesn't really remember anything aboout Mi-Do, which means hypnotize worked out
Some people thinks Dae-Su smiles and cry because he still remembers Mi-Do as his daughter and what happened between them
What do you think?
According to Park Chan-wook's interview in Korea, he hasn't decided either. It's an open ending.
I kinda look it the same way as the ending to Inception-there’s a subtle hint and nod to help you decide which way the chips fell, but ultimately, it doesn’t matter so much as the emotional and thematic context so the endings are left that way ON PURPOSE so every viewer can walk away with their own interpretation.
But ultimately, it doesn’t matter-the point is Cobb in Inception is no longer CONCERNED about the totem spinning meaning he’s ACCEPTED whatever his new reality is, much like Oh Dae Su is finally content to have someone that’ll love and take care of him, regardless of whether he retained his memories or not.
I always wanted to know who all the other prisoners were in the hotel.
Please please plase, react to Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. There´s the vengeance trilogy, and old boy was the third one (and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance is the second). Same director, and in two cases same actors.
one of the only films i had to pause and take a minute like wtf ...😮
Thankx
This movie messed me up the first time I saw it. Spike Lee did a remake that I chose not to watch, xD. Now that you have seen him in this, you should check out 'I Saw the Devil'.
Hi, great reaction, also try watching once were warriors, another great movie, IMO.
Isn't this part of a trilogy , Mr vengeance and lady vengeance
You're reaction is exactly what mine was when I first saw this movie. Just mouth gaped and fireworks of wtf shooting out. Love it!
I highly recommend that you check out parts 1 and 3 of these movies, directed by Park Chan-wook, in what is called the Vengeance Trilogy. Oldboy is part two.
The other 2 movies are Sympathy for Mr Vengeance and Lady Vengeance. Even though the movies don't directly align, there are characters that cross over between and different characters are played by the same actors. They are all a super wild ride.
Another fucked up wild ride is Ichi The Killer. Japanese film about the yakuza and a less than ordinary child.
The english remake with Josh Brolin isn't bad. Spike Lee's twist is different than this one
세계최고답 올드보이
Yo u a real one for this
I liked the american ending more. But they both broke my heart😢
Serbian Film next
no, just no. ☝
Nah man wtf
Dope reaction. You definitely gotta watch Spike Lee's remake of this. Josh Brolin and Elizebeth Olsen are great and has it's own twist on the story.
Are you insane?
@@guyfromthe80s92 Nah, I just think for myself unlike most of these sheep :)
@@thaistomp Sorry but the remake is total trash. Waste of time.
Yeah, I wouldn't recommend anyone wasting their time watching the atrocious remake. That time could be better spent watching better movies, which include any other Spike Lee or Park Chan-wook film.
kind of has this generic, cliche hollywood feel all over ir, not one of Spike Lee's best movies
You should try "I saw the devil"
This movie totally blew me away- nothing like it.
There are a bunch of great South Korean movies out there. I'm partial to the gangster movies like Night in Paradise, The Man From Nowhere, I Saw The Devil. Then you've got The Host, Memories of Murder, Mother
I Saw the Devil is great. Have you seen Audition? Memories of Murder is on the top of my faves list.
@@larindanomikos love Audition but didn't include it as it is Japanese. A ton of great movies from there as well.
한국영화 신세계(2013)을 추천합니다. 당신이 좋아 할 영화라 생각합니다.
The hand that held my sister became a gun and pulled the trigger.
I saw the devil is another masterpiece with the same actor
Epic film, better than the remake I think.
Nah, I liked the remake better tbh.
I agree, the original is absolutely the best!
i havent watched this for a long time... all i remember is a lot of killing and some sort of incest
I bought this 25 yrs ago. I don't know what Spike Lee was thinking. Used to like that guy. But this is a classic. Ichi the Killer is another great one in the same genre.
친절한금자씨도 좋아요
It's actually a pretty nice touch that we (viewers) went through the whole movie not knowing a single thing just like Oh Dae-su, then dropped the biggest plot twist that explains the previous scenes in our face.
Also, the parallel is insane, Mi-do prayed that Lee Woo-jin will kneel against Oh Dae-su, but the opposite happens. This is a rare case where the villian actually won.
I can’t recall any actor doing a better job of being a drunk, belligerent ass as seen in the beginning of the movie.
This movie is a comedy as well
What do you mean?
The Thing
