Loved this movie. Didn't think the (american) remake was that bad either.
P.S James you should really watch all of Winding Refn's work (he did Drive) I'm pretty sure you'll like his style. He had a tv show last year Too Old To Die Young which was also awesome!

hmmmm, Colin Farrel said in his own description that The Killing of a Sacred Deer
was like the nightmares the characters in The Lobster would have,
which is the same writer/director as Sacred Deer as well as Colin Farrel in the lead role.
That being said its not like your spoiling the other movie, its just that The Lobster was released first and they are *kind of* in the same universe.
      In the same headspace.
new comment, new recommendation; anything published by A24 movie studios.

Oldboy is based on a manga with the same name but its also is a telling of the old Greek storytelling of catharsism. With the story of Oedipus Rex hence the name of the protaganist Oh Dae Su who is a man that kills his father marries his mother and upon discovering this fact stabs both his eyes out (Oh Dae Su cuts his own tongue). This movie is also part of a trilogy being the 2nd movie, the third one is my favourite Sympathy for lady vengeance!!! And the ost is so good, Korean movies are the best!!

Oldboy is maybe THE BEST film for channels like this. Its just great to watch other people to experience it for the first time. Mainly the story and the twist, but also the action scenes and cinematography. Its really fitting you saying it feels comicbook like because the film is actually based on japanese manga of the same name.

It's not like that. The original manga has a different color from the movie. The original manga does not have the violence and narrative like a movie. The original manga is not much different from an ordinary thriller. This is a movie full of Park Chan-wook.

"Oldboy" is just incredible. I love how it still inspires people over 20 years later. It feels so fresh. Even now i am seeing new angles to this movie. How the style mirrors the motif of the painting in Dae Sues cell with the man that cries and laughs the same time. The movie is brutal and ugly but at the same time it has such a beautiful art style and music. The whole editing is going so well with the story, its mindblowing. There is beauty in everything that is terrible in this movie. What a masterpiece. I have seen it in 2003 and recently i saw it with my girlfriend. It is absolutely timeless.

@@JamesVSCinema its an absolute classic. I love its unpredictable story and visceral characters and the plot twist that gets everyone in the end. I remember watching it as a teen and me and my friends being so horrified at the end. It has some of the most memorable cinematography I've seen. Also, don't watch the remake lol

  • @Dell-ol6hb

The movie really is a tragedy from all sides, it works from both perspectives. For example, the antagonist, Lee Woo-jin, could just as easily be the protagonist, and Oh Dae-su, the antagonist, in his vengeance, they ruined each other's lives. Another sad part is that Woo-jin thinks Dae-su is responsible for the rumors spreading, but this is only partially true. He originally saw them in the classroom but he didn't know either of them so he didn't actually realize they were siblings and just casually tells his friend, who then proceeds to start the rumors of her being a slut and leads to her killing herself. Woo-jin blames Dae-su because 1) he saw him watching them and 2) as we find out from the lady in the salon that Dae-su talks to, she says that everybody says Dae-su would know best about who Woo-jin's sister was having sex with, because his friend probably told everybody Dae-su was the one who actually saw her in the classroom. I think the most unsettling thing about this movie is that what Dae-su did was so minor that he just completely forgot about it, and look at the cataclysmic effect it had on so many people, completely outside of his control or intentions.
