Enjoy watching your videos Dave. It reminds me of my husband who was a jack of all trades, collected a lot of used things to restore them next to new. If he didn't have what he needed, he would build it. He was raised in a family of 14 children & they never had much. Their Dad never drove a vehicle but did have a tractor. They lived from what they produced on their farm like our family of 13 did. At least my Dad had a car.
Yes, I also watched the videos when you travel to Alaska & the help you received when you passed through Fort Saskatchewan. I cherish all the work you & Brooke do while you are living in Alaska. The cabins you are building are very interesting.@@Bushradical
Nice content and approach to this build. I didn’t realize you were a knife maker, too. I also like to make knives when I can, but I don’t have the shop space to do noisy metal work. That is usually do these days is reprofile or regrind old kitchen knives down into new patterns and then put new handles on them. When I was younger living with my parents in a rural area, I could do things like blacksmithing and heat treating of steel, but that’s pretty much out of the question in apartment living.

If one is looking for an artists' eye, then yours would fit the bill. Thanks, Dave for letting us look over your shoulder in your shop.

Congrats on 20k subs!! I just sub'd today. Been watching a lot of videos on making knives and came across yours this morning. I am going to attempt to make my son and myself a nice bushcraft knife. We are just getting into bushcrafting. We already have Condor Bushlore knives, but being that I am from WV where we like to make our own stuff, I want to try my hand at making a knife. We have been hunting, big thing here in WV, for years. I have been hunting for over 38 years and my son has been hunting for 15 years. I haven't seen all your videos, so I am going to be browsing around looking at your selections of videos, and keep and eye out for updates to this video. Thanks for sharing. Juddie - J & J TOA
Hey Juddie, thanks for the sub. I wish I had more knife vids up but I'm just getting started too. I have cousins down in West Virginia....down in Chapmanville.
@@Bushradical small world Dave! Well I live in Fayetteville a few miles from the famous New River Gorge Bridge. Lived here all my life, in WV, originally from Oak Hill which is only 6 miles from Fayetteville. I will be keeping an eye on your channel for updates on your experiences on your knife build. I might do a video of mine, but mine will be mostly all by hand. Don't have a band saw, do have a hand grinder and I need to make a gig for doing the bevel. Trying to gather as much information that I can gather right now. Have a great day. Juddie - J & J TOA
Really enjoy the videos you post, learn a lot from you. Would be interested to see what kind of stand you made for that Bauer portaband saw that you are using as a benchtop bandsaw. Thank you!
As always Dave great job on the video! I really like your simplistic way of doing things. It's still bugging me that your working in that cold garage when there is a wood burner a couple feet away. I know your a tuff guy but maybe you could include it in your videos with a short fire side chat at the end of each video. Thanks again. Larry
Hey Larry, you're the second person thats mentioned the cold garage :) The thing is the garage is right next to the house so its easy to skip on over and do something then pop right back in the house....I don't start a fire unless I plan to be out there for a while.
Excellent ideas.. very cool Great start... I got a bk62, Ian beckers reproduction of the original (he managed to acquire an original) it is a real nice knife, it has an interesting balance and can cut. I completely understand your issue and desire to change it up just a bit. What grinds are you going for. I like a saber grind.. it cuts great in all kinds if situations especially with food!. i like a knife i can cook with after all those feather sticks are carved up. Your knife is your life!.. what are your handle thoughts. i opted not to get a genesis because i didn't like the thumb notches at the blade so i got a outback the custom lt wright made for blade hq, and it is great. my other real favorite is a BK2 it is an awesome beast 1/4" thick and can cut a tomato, and field dress a Buick. Sweet knif . I love knives.. they are so much fun.. Keep at it. making a knife is the ultimate.. i am still learning (yea 50 years) to use a Washita Stone, and a Whetstone, made a strop and am considering giving up and getting a tormek just cause i want all those edges to shave... Talking knives .. love it J
Hey Jeff, I'm into Saber grinds too, so that will for sure be one grind I 'll work with. I like Wood and Micarta for handles, but I'm not into much thats "exotic". I like simple. Check out my LT wright genesis review.....I feel the same way about the thumb notches ( great knife otherwise).
its a sin in germany to not vice grip the blank while drill pressing it :D so satiesfying to see the good ol industrial tools now seing working and paying off for you i love it =) !
I watched this the other day. I've been thinking about those larger scraps you have left. Just a thought, how about using those to make small replica of the bigger knives, and sell some in pairs. My Dad had a beautiful set a long time ago. The sheath had a smaller sheath sewed to it so both knives used the same one. They must have came from an oriental country, because they had dragons embedded in pearl handles. Absolutely beautiful. Now I know you probably don't want to get that involved, but the big knife, small knife combo would probably sell good. Just a thought from Paul.
I'm tracking with you on the blade tip. I do prefer something a bit more stabby-er-ish (I made this word up) than the traditional Kephart spearpoint so nicely done! Since you are over 1/8" thick be sure to get the grind high enough so it will still cut through space and time easily and not just be a pry bar. Congrats on the 2,000,000 subs... aim high right!
Thanks Brad! I hope you enjoy the channel!! As for Christmas we had a great day......unfortunately Ive been sick ever since. I must have edited out 200 coughs in this video. LOL. Thanks for the sub!
Awww that sucks hope you get feeling better. And I love the channel. I'm from the same small town you are so it was pretty neat to see your channel. As a matter of fact you probably don't remember me I was a little peeler the last time I seen you. Oh congrats on 20 k for subs can't wait to see the finished knifes.
I had ordered A2 steel but the supplier called and told me they were out and didn't catch the mistake in time...so they asked if I would be good with D2......thats why the first run will be D2
Is that last hole too close to the lanyard hole? It looks as if the head of the rivet and the end of the lanyard tube will almost be touching - once the lanyard hole is larger and the tubing end flared. Looking good though and I like the idea of D2 (at around 60 RC). I have one and though it's a bear to get sharp it doesn't have to be resharpened so soon.
Awesome Dave, the ball is rolling on the knife production dream, you must really be feeling the excitement now, nice to see all the machinery keeping up to the task :) looking forward to seeing the finished product. Dave have you decided on a logo or name to have stamped on the blade. Always a fun entertaining video, stay warm, be safe.
P.S. congrats on reaching the 20 thousand sub plateau, i'm sure your channel numbers will increase hugely this year with the attraction of the knife production videos and all your regular content that you produce which makes your channel a fun and entertaining watch :)
Good question.....I don't have a name or logo settled on yet. I might do a video asking for recommendations. So far the majority of the work has been mental.....just taking it slow and trying not to waste money on the wrong things. The fun part has been collecting old equipment. The old drill presses and grinder are super fun to use. Its equipment you can respect. Its got history. Our Grandparents and great grandparents made all that stuff back when there was a totally different approach to making things. It was meant to last. It says a lot that those old folks are gone but the machines they made in the 30's and 40's and 50's are still here. I don't know if I "could" use anything else...I admire and respect those folks and the way they approached building things.
Hey Dave, Maybe we can put a down payment on a first run knife, and you can put heat in the shop . In turn it might pickup production time :- ) Seriously my Ula is getting lonely in the drawer with foreign knives ( not made in Michigan ) :- o
I don't really know what I'll charge. Its will depend on my cost per knife/sheath, consumables like sanding belts & epoxy and how much time I have into each unit.
Hi Dave, Just wanted to say hi from Alberta! Any update on the knife making project? I've been dabbling in it a bit myself for the last couple years. Its addictive!!
Hey Jordan, yes I have some knife making videos in the works. I'm doing some prototypes and switched to a port band for cutting out blanks.......so totally shifting gears.
what would you have to do , to keep from having to send your knives out of your shop ?.....ie...after you obtain your steel , all the work is done in shop.........or maybe a selection of different kinds of steel.....i have some d2 and some aus-8 and some other fancy-steel knives from bench-made ,and some custom-made , but the one i like the best is the aus-8 , of course that is me, other people i am sure have a different opinion......
Well, I don't really want to cut out 70 of the same blank......So I like the thought of water jet....But I would love to have a small forge and oven so I could do heat treat and keep rolling, without having to wait for stuff that was sent out.
Great video Dave. Just curious, where will the knives be placed for sale.. your website? Also, do you have an approximate time table that knives will become available?
I haven't made it that far yet...I'll be documenting the whole process so when they are ready I should be ready to sell them. I may do a small website.
Looking pretty Kepharty to me Dave ! Looking forward to how you make the handles and stuff. Wondering if you are going to start using micarta ? If you make a micarta handled Kephart , I'm going to need to get one ! LOve your channel and all the best to you in 2019 Pete/Ab.
@@Bushradical Awesome Dave. ! I have milkcrates of knives , but all these years never found a nice micarta one. My dream knife really. Looking forward to see how it all turns out.
whoa badass bandsaw and i did my first ever full tang blade with a water spraybottle to cool it down, a grinder and almost double the thickness of the blade tooked about 3 cutting discs. Did u used old circular saw blades for blades yet ? what do you think about this ?
I have a big sawmill blade I might use in the future....but I'm not sure what kind of steel it is...and I'm not sure I want to go down the "mystery steel" road.
I want a mineee kepheart . Shorter .. THINNER scales w / that slight clip point on not more than a 2.75" blade of rust resistant steel . All cased in a front pocket sheath , not easily seen from a distance .
@@Bushradical every kepheart knife I ever saw a video of too thick and or too long to carry in My front pocket ( concealed) . I say sell em all right here on Your youtube channel ( if You can) ! Have You ever forged knives for sale to the public ?
I sold a batch of knives last fall ( about 14) but I didn't make anything like what you described. I really think you need to check out that bark river mini Kephart.....its small and thin
U hv a great channel Dave... pretty soon u won't be able to reply to all comments! Price of a bigger channel... Nice lookin knife blank! Planning on making any neck knives with that pattern?
Ive never had a neck knife so I don't really know what would make a good one. Even if I get to a million subs I'll always answer your comments. Thanks C2F! Draw me a design you like and email it to me @ whippleconcrete@hotmail.com I can always work on it in between production.
I just leave so many comments because I heard once the algorithm laws of the tube gods takes it into account hahahha see I'm not crazy i'm just talking to a robot every body!
Cheers Dave!! 20k is a lot of good people. I'm already robbing the kids piggy banks for this knife. Good luck at Waterjet and look forward to the next step.
Good question! As far as selling knives I think all the 1095 type steels would make great knives but be less attractive...being so common. CPM3V on the other hand is much ,more desirable.....but its a major investment. Not to mention I don't have any real experience in this field.. So I settled in the middle for a solid tool steel. A2 actually. But after I made my order I got a call saying the supplier was out of A2 and didn't catch the mistake in time. So they upgraded me to D2 at no additional charge. D2 it is .....for this go-round.
Dave, if you can get away with two pins that saves you 50% of the time for putting pins in. Also, who is your buyer? I Would bet that 50% or more of your buyers will be female so you need things in your knives they like. Also most people who need an edc knife and don't have one will be female also. Not only that but women control most of the money in the world (and all of the nookie, of course). If you do his and her knife sets, that means that your knives will make better gifts. Hope those points help a bit.
If you think about who has not got a knife and needs one you owe me a lady Godiva.(fiver). my money says most fellas have several knives already and most girls have none or one shitty one. If you go fishing you don't put strawberries on the hook coz you like them. you put worms and bugs on coz that's what fish like. Give the market what it wants.
Thanks For the comments guys. According to the youtube analytics only 11% of the audience for this channel are women. So I don't think the 50% applies here. As for making knives with features women would like, I have no idea what that would be. Mosaic pins comes to mind , but I don't like mosaic pins.
Interesting, but perhaps of that 11%, 9% need a knife and don't have one. Your buyers will also come from places other than UA-cam viewers. A good option would be handle colours they like. . Here Victorinox flouro' coloured handles on small knives fly out the shop doors as chicks like them and they are less likely to get lost.
I use cutting oil quite a bit with the press but I don't think I will use it much for the bandsaw...But I'm sure you're right. I hate the mess around the blade guides and roller on the band saw.
I just bought a portaband to cut blanks with, I was grinding flatbar in a vise but I wanted to use up these 14 inch concrete blades.
Best of luck Juddie.
Awesome
Check out my LT wright genesis review.....I feel the same way about the thumb notches ( great knife otherwise).
its a sin in germany to not vice grip the blank while drill pressing it :D so satiesfying to see the good ol industrial tools now seing working and paying off for you i love it =) !
hanks DH! Its fun to use the old stuff.
Interesting thought...
thanks for great video.
Thanks Patty.
Hi Dave, my pc did a nose dive, so I'm sorry for not commenting lately. Doing this a my notebook is a pain lol. Cool video bud, Rock On!
Thanks Z. Sorry about your computer.
I've dug out lots of slivers with a knife, its got to be a sharp and pointed!
YES! I feel the same way.
Congrats on 20k!
Thanks Nick. Where in the North west are you?
@@Bushradical US, Washington State

Oh right on.
Good luck with your channel. The beginning of show me your steak was funny. Keep up the good work.
looking forward to your 2" x 72" belt grinder build :). You know it's coming. lol
LOL, I actually have another 2 hp motor and I might do just that!
2 years later and 278,000 subscribers 😉
I'm tracking with you on the blade tip. I do prefer something a bit more stabby-er-ish (I made this word up) than the traditional Kephart spearpoint so nicely done! Since you are over 1/8" thick be sure to get the grind high enough so it will still cut through space and time easily and not just be a pry bar. Congrats on the 2,000,000 subs... aim high right!
Thanks C2. I was thinking probably a saber grind or a full flat . I don't want to make pry bars . LOL
I wonder if you could utilize 3d printing to quickly prototype a knife design
Love the video's. I just became a subscriber the other day. Hope you and your family had a good Christmas and New years.
Thanks Brad. You're from Morley?
Yes sir. My father is Lonnie Harris
Right on!
I bought your condor knife on ebay and im looking forward to getting one of these
Hey Trevor! Did you buy the Micarta Bushlore?
@@Bushradicales bought it for 61$ thanks for the great deal
Congratulations on 20k. I’m ready to buy a knife. Let us know when they are ready
Thanks Michael. I'll let everyone know when they are done, but at the rate I'm going lately.....LOL, it won't be next week :)
congrats on 20k. I hope you do something other than D2 in the future. I was hoping you meant A2 and misspoke:)
I had ordered A2 steel but the supplier called and told me they were out and didn't catch the mistake in time...so they asked if I would be good with D2......thats why the first run will be D2
Great video, really like that.
SurvivalAustria
Thanks SurvivalAustria!
I will probably not use that hole.
I have some big metal cutting bandsaw blades I'm going to make into knives, I'm just waiting for the right pattern to do it!
Nice . Let me know how they turn out.
Helllo Dave W.i am going to want one of your first run.i guess we will see may be i'll get lucky.lol later brother GOOD LUCK...
Awesome. Thanks
..lookin' forward to the finished knife and the process you use..good luck on your build..
Thanks Bob.
Dave. Did you ever start an online store for your knives?
Will be waiting Dave! Good video! Thanks, LOL DKJK wis.
Thanks Dennis.
Great video Dave. What hardness are you heat treating your blanks to? Hope I can be one of your first customers.
Hey Chris, I haven't determined that yet.....stay tuned. Thanks for the comment.
good info
Thanks RB.
What speed were you using on the band saw here?
Thanks Gordon. I appreciate that.
Hey Dave,
Maybe we can put a down payment on a first run knife, and you can put heat in the shop . In turn it might pickup production time :- )
Seriously my Ula is getting lonely in the drawer with foreign knives ( not made in Michigan ) :- o
I do have a wood stove in the garage but I work in the cold a lot. I don't mind, until it gets down in the teens.
Man, I´m looking forward to your first Knife for offer, quite curious how muh it will be.
I don't really know what I'll charge. Its will depend on my cost per knife/sheath, consumables like sanding belts & epoxy and how much time I have into each unit.
Yeah, that’s how you calculate it 😊 As I said, I‘m curious about the outcome and looking forward to it. Hopefully I can afford it 😉
I want one of them knives
What kind of grind will you be putting on these? Will you use a micro bevel?
Saber, and Convex probably.....maybe a high Scandi with a small secondary
Hi Dave,
Just wanted to say hi from Alberta!
@@Bushradical okie dokie. Thanks very much
Looking pretty Kepharty to me Dave ! Looking forward to how you make the handles and stuff. Wondering if you are going to start using micarta ? If you make a micarta handled Kephart , I'm going to need to get one ! LOve your channel and all the best to you in 2019 Pete/Ab.
Hey Pete. Actually I do plan on using micarta.
@@Bushradical jeah i tought the same but if i get my hands on a free sawmill blade i will try =)
If its free , why not!!
@@Bushradical exactly
I want a mineee kepheart . Shorter .. THINNER scales w / that slight clip point on not more than a 2.75" blade of rust resistant steel . All cased in a front pocket sheath , not easily seen from a distance .
Bark river makes a mini Kephart.
I really think you need to check out that bark river mini Kephart.....its small and thin
cool
Thanks
U hv a great channel Dave... pretty soon u won't be able to reply to all comments! Price of a bigger channel...
Nice lookin knife blank!
Planning on making any neck knives with that pattern?
Ive never had a neck knife so I don't really know what would make a good one. Even if I get to a million subs I'll always answer your comments. Thanks C2F!
Draw me a design you like and email it to me @ whippleconcrete@hotmail.com I can always work on it in between production.
Hey Dave! Great looking knife man🙂 what are you planning on using for scales?
Probably Micarta. I like the fact its trouble free.
I could totally do this! But I’d have to have to learn to be a lefty because I’d only have one finger left on my right hand.
Just don't sneeze when your running the bandsaw.
Bushradical 😂
damn I've gotta use a hand file and hacksaw lol
WOW! Thats hard core.
I just leave so many comments because I heard once the algorithm laws of the tube gods takes it into account hahahha see I'm not crazy i'm just talking to a robot every body!
Thanks Jutty.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
How many are you going to make ?
I have enough steel for about 70 units, but I may only do about 35 in this pattern.
@@Bushradical That is a lot , Succes with the build
Cheers Dave!! 20k is a lot of good people. I'm already robbing the kids piggy banks for this knife. Good luck at Waterjet and look forward to the next step.
Thanks Joshua.
Dave, I really think you should wear goggles over your glasses when cutting or grinding metal. Take care.
Thanks, I won't argue with you, I just don't have any at the moment.
I don't use goggles, they fog up to bad, I use a face shield!
@@donaldhofman296 Good tip!
I've always thought the same thing about the Kephart design. I'd love you get one of your blades when they're ready.Congrats on 20k subs!
Thanks Bama Woodsman!!
Bushradical you're welcome!
Why D-2?
Good question! As far as selling knives I think all the 1095 type steels would make great knives but be less attractive...being so common. CPM3V on the other hand is much ,more desirable.....but its a major investment. Not to mention I don't have any real experience in this field..
So I settled in the middle for a solid tool steel. A2 actually. But after I made my order I got a call saying the supplier was out of A2 and didn't catch the mistake in time. So they upgraded me to D2 at no additional charge. D2 it is .....for this go-round.
Walmart! $6.95
what?
Dave, if you can get away with two pins that saves you 50% of the time for putting pins in. Also, who is your buyer? I Would bet that 50% or more of your buyers will be female so you need things in your knives they like. Also most people who need an edc knife and don't have one will be female also. Not only that but women control most of the money in the world (and all of the nookie, of course). If you do his and her knife sets, that means that your knives will make better gifts. Hope those points help a bit.
I will bet you 5.00 that you are off on the female buyers ? That they will not be 50% of the buyers .
Amen brother!
Are u on instagram
No, I'm not. My wife is and she likes it.
If you use cutting oil you will extend the life of your saw blades and drill bits.
I use cutting oil quite a bit with the press but I don't think I will use it much for the bandsaw...But I'm sure you're right. I hate the mess around the blade guides and roller on the band saw.
Not sure how I missed these knife video's but I'm getting them now.
Have a great day
Good video !!!! cant wait to see the finished product. good luck in all you do . Going to want me one . I'm a knife freak hahaha .
Thanks Grant.
