I guess you changed the timing belt at 100k miles. Did you ever change the water pump. I changed the water pump on my 2007 Sienna at 97K. The only thing. 3.5 liter
minivans have been luxury cruisers for a long time. These ones don't have many features compared to top of the line ones. There is a reason the top of the line minivans are now all $50k.
In the UK, mpvs (minivans) have never had a luxurious status (probably one of the reasons they are disappearing so quickly). In continental Europe, there is one luxurious mpv called the Renault espace. You can configure it to be over 70,000 euros. But that's really it
2006 owner. Great van. Inadvertently received it over time after kids grew up and wife basically took over my car as her own. Use it for my rentals these days because it carries full sheets of plywood and drywall plus tools. Took me 3 years of ownership to notice the hidden arm rest storage - I store my wallet or firearm in there as thieves would simply pass over it. About 8 years ago my kid lost her tablet and it has been an unsolved mystery ever since. Well, past summer I was vacuuming up construction debris in the van and found the long missing tablet in the hidden drawer under the passenger seat! I had no idea it existed. 221,000 miles now, running great, and btw tablet still worked and it was hilarious watching the old videos stored on the device.
My dad sold our 2013 Toyota Sienna SE to use my uncle's 2007 Toyota Sienna CE since it was free and yeah my uncle died that's why we're using his van...
Forgot to mention that the new Sienna drives worlds better. Strong brakes, Handles great in corners. CVT is smooth and responsive compared to the 5 - speed. BUT the v6 is smoother and less vibration under medium load. Both are quiet, especially the hybrid when not being stressed. Hope this helps!
Unless the 2nd gen has new shocks, springs, rotors and pads, that could very well be due to age. I recently replaced all of those with OE parts on mine, and it feels incredible, tighter and smoother, just like a new car
@@peterruedig4647 even so, the biggest flaw on the second gen were indeed the brakes. I just remind myself I'm not in a Porsche when it comes time to stop. And yes, I've maintained & replaced brakes & suspension as necessary. The brakes are marginal at their best.
Curious, why did you pick FWD ?? I like you own a 2008 Sienna AWD - XSE , only difference is I reserved a AWD. The salesperson asked me why AWD , his opinion was the FWD is the way to go .. Any thoughts??? I want to change my mind before too late :) Thank you!!!

People always give me looks when I say that I low key love my parent's 04 Sienna XLE Limited that they bought new before I entered high school. I got my permit in it, we toured universities in it, helped me move in/out of school, helped me w/ multiple apt moves as an adult, road trips, home depot runs, etc. etc. And it currently has only 80,000 miles for a 17 year old car so it's going to last till we go extinct. Thankfully I have a 440i 6MT w/ an exhaust to redeem my street cred but I will always adore that van.
Love my pearl white 05 customer optioned 1owner Sienna. So fast but now that I removed the second row and pass side jumper seat .. This thing is getting converted into a camper using nice light weight birch and pine. Bar sink, hot water, wood floor, fridge etc.. Wish me luck, the floor is going to be the hardest part!!😔

Had a 2004 Sienna XLE AWD. It was pretty good. We drove 182k after 11 years. Did well in the snow, and I think it is still driving. Cons? Automatic doors wouldn’t shut in winter all the way in winter, and car would beep while driving, rear bumper tabs failed driving down the interstate, and we were dragging bumper down interstate, had to temp fix with duct tape, seat heaters failed, passenger window failed. Replaced with 2015 Highlander. 150k repair free miles. Nothing has failed yet.
I love the Sienna, mine is 2005 with 303K miles. Very comfortable for all around transportation and great for long trips. This van is among the most reliable vehicles out there.
We still have our 2005 too. An LE. Very comfortable. I can drive all day in it. New car seats seem harsher. Or I’m getting older. I found a 2005 LE with 61,000 miles. I wanted to buy it soooo bad. Wifey says no. 😢
@@hedgehogthesonic3181 transmission, engine & AC have been working perfectly since new and Dealer says it some transmission leaks but I don’t see any thing on the ground so I’m not concerned. Incredibly the suspension is still original although dealer recommends replacing struts but again, I don’t see the need for replacing struts yet because it still handles great and no tire cupping or uneven wear found. No electrical issues and fuel injection issues, it still has the original fuel pump. Seats are soft and cushy and in excellent condition. Paint is acceptable but still original. Dealer replaced the dashboard free of charge in 2015 at around 200k miles because they found a small crack on passenger side and said it should not crack after 10 years or 200K lol 😂. My favorite road trip vehicle because of its 400-450 miles range between fill ups and there’s so much space for people and luggage.
I like the 2021 Sienna. I have another Toyota hybrid and the quality is the best. My 2004 Sienna with 190K won’t die so I have a hard time moving to the newest generation Sienna.
Only 100k miles to go. LOL. My parents were so upset when their 2004 sequoia got totaled last year. Still have the 2004 Avalon though. Still the best highway cruiser i have even rode in (that includes my 2016 S6), handling is terrible but its a cruiser.
We used to have a 2008 Toyota Sienna Limited, which we then got rid of in 2019 and upgraded to the 2020 Lincoln Navigator. But seriously, that Sienna literally held up through anything, and was so damn fast.
I've once heard a joke about Toyota and Lexus vehicles. A Lexus is just a Toyota with better soundproofing. Rather than giving him a Lexus i think they should make his Prius into something more comfortable (softer seats, more leather/faux leather, better stereo, suspension upgrade, rattle fixes, etc.)
The efficiency of these two minivans has doubled over the past 17 years. From 18 mpg, up to 36 mpg. Plus, adjusted for inflation, the new van is $10,000 cheaper than the old one. Overall, I’m pretty impressed with the advancement.
@@allenfsanchez9572 Toyota hybrids are some of the most reliable Toyotas made. Taxi drivers push Prius/hybrid Camrys hard and fleet data shows usage to 300-400k no problems in NYC taxis. If you ever ridden in a NYC taxi you’ll know that’s severe duty 300-400k
I have the 2006 Limited Sienna AWD, which is considered the best year for this Sienna generation. It has only 78K miles on it (99% freeway miles). It comes out only for a long trip. Otherwise, it sits in the garage under a cover. It has gone all over the western United States. it one time saved our lives as we drove down a steep hill that had black ice in Lake Tahoe. Last month I had the original brakes from the factory changed on the front, but the Toyota dealership said that the rear brakes were barely worn and do not need to be changed. Service is always done at the dealership and the service advisors all admire my Sienna. My Sienna did not come with “Fix a Flat”. It came with only with run flat tires, no spare tire.
My daily driver is an 04 Sienna LE, 2wd. 274k miles and counting. Did struts, tie rods and sway bar links at 240k, other than that, just oil changes and brakes. I love it. It’s comfortable, its fast, it’s good in the snow, it can carry full sheets of plywood, and it gets 24 mpg. I put 120 miles a day on it commuting to work and back, and the interior looks the same as it did in 2004, nothing has worn out or broken, even the power doors work fine. It was well designed and well built, as a Toyota should be. All that to say I don’t think we’ll be saying the same thing about the 2021 Sienna in 17 years, which is a real shame.
Old is gold! I just subbed now you’ve helped me so much with getting a van! Just a note I wanted to add - 2004 was the first year of the second gen - it’s truly testament to Toyota’s perfection : they were creating some truly magnificent cars during that era. We’re just losing that emphasis in 2021

Keep up the maintenance and your Toyota Sienna, can last up to 600,000.00 miles. A youtuber, post a video (2021), of her 2004 Toyota Sienna, with 601,000.00 miles.
My family still has out 2007 sienna with over 250k miles, sure it chirps on start up and the power side door lost its slide but the ye'ole sienna is still running strong!!
Good video. Just let my 04 Sienna go recently as it just turned 360,000 km, yes that’s km, as l am in Ontario Canada. This van dealt with the salt and snow and crap weather we get here, and NEVER let us down. It was the LE so had mid row captains chairs, and was awesome for travelling with another couple. I needed a truck, and l saw this 2014 Tundra with 350,000 km on it, so obviously it was highway driven. Have had it six months and not a worry in the world about it. I do still miss the Sienna, she took good care of us for 17 years, and is still on the road. May find ourselves in one again some day, but l will look for one that is a few years old. The new one you had there did less for me than your dressed out 04. I swear they were built better. Ours came from Tennessee when we got it. Cheers, and thanks again for the good info.
The 2004 Sienna is 54k adjusted, he mentioned that in the video. Compared to the newer Sienna he tested which is 46K! I won't lie and say that the new Sienna has it's issues, but with the right mid cycle refresh they'll figure out some of the smaller details (more headroom, better build quality and fit and finish, removable second row seats, more power for the hybrid and hopefully the 12.3in infotainment found in the new Highlander).
@@cbkenison More reliability too on the hybrid one, due to the simplicity of the planetary gear set that Toyota uses in their hybrids, just 2 electric motors and a few gears, no pressure discs, clutch, fluid valves, none of that.
Your 2004 is fancier then my 2006 but I love it. Hauled tons of kids for years. Now that they are grown and gone I have moved them to college and back and to college again. Not to mention hauls from Lowe’s and Costco. It has served us very well. Now I’m converting it into my camper van. Plenty of living to do in my Siena. ;) I’d be way more interested in upgrading if all the seats came out of the new one. I want ALL the access to the cargo/camping space.
My story and my plan is exactly the same as yours. Mine is 04 base trim, she has served us well. My kid just graduated this year, no more university move, house reno is done, I am about to retire, so I am going to convert the van into a camper.

A great looking 2004 sienna. I’m glad to see it looks great after 17 yrs of driving it & it’s features as well. I love how you are comparing it to the 2021 Toyota Sienna in hybrid. That is so cool. I own a 2013 Toyota Sienna XLE, but I wish I had AWD as well. I love it lots & my nieces & nephews do as well. It works well with car seats & the LATCH system too. I love how you keep your kids in straps as long as possible. I did my nieces & nephews as well when they were all little til age 8 in 1/2 yrs old. Then into booster car seats for as long as possible as well. My younger niece & nephew are still in boosters today will be til there ready for the adult seatbelt. Which is still a few yrs away! Keep up the good safety with your kids. I live in Arvada,CO!
We still have our 2006 Toyota Sienna Le that we brought new. It has 180k miles and it's running pretty well. Downside is it eats tires extremely fast, sliding doors needs some persuasion to close, and transmission needs to be flush because it's slipping a bit.
Sad to see the newer model loses so much of the utility that the old model had. I've taken the seats out of our 2000 Toyota Sienna and hauled lumber and other materials many times over the years for home repairs.
4x8 sheets in back with tailgate closed. 10 '+ long boards easily fit diagonally inside with tailgate closed. 16' 2x12 lumber on roof rack for short distances. Also put a 32' ladder up there once. This generation of Sienna is a beast. Wheel barrows, table saw on roller stand, 12" chop saw on stand, 1700lbs of rock veneer stone, roofing, concrete bags. Rains here a lot and Sienna keeps everything dry and secure vs. my truck.
I was intending on making the same comment. I have a 2007 with 238000 miles on it and it's still going strong. Looks like I'll hang on to it as long as I can. The fact I can haul 4x8 sheets of plywood or drywall or a couch, bed, dresser with the rear door closed is fantastic. I've even hauled a piano laying on it's back and my John Deere riding mower with the seat removed. Not being able to remove the second row ruins it.
I could do the same exact comparisons with my vans; 2004 LE, 2022 LE awd. I love them both The hybrid platform is just different, but in good way. I love the fact it runs only when required. I get 33 mpg highway and 40 mpg city. Yes things may feel cheaper in some ways but in the end 99% of all vehicles end up recycled in 20 years. You put the money in the moving components and in areas where it counts. I was born in 1967 and have a excellent account of all the cars throughout the years. Cars today are huge improvement of the past. I can live with cheap carpet and few squeaks, for great gas mileage and advanced safety features. I never thought for second when I purchased my 2004 that I would own it till now and have so few mechanical issues. You can reflect on the past, but not on the future. I will be upgrading my 2022 when the plug in comes in. The gas you save can make up for maintenance in the long run.
=) I have a 2004 Toyota Sienna Limited AWD also, 111, 000 miles and every thing still works, ( put Lexus GS 18" wheels on it 245/50r18, drives way more stable and converted all the lights to LED)
My mom had an 05 limited v6 until she got in an accident due to someone popping a tire and losing control and hit her....basically total loss. Bought it brand new with 12 miles on it too. Replaced it with a 15 Rx350 and it just doesnt feel the same. Miss our Highlander :'(
@@SimornMI miss mine too. My 04 was my grandfather's that he gave to me several years ago (he also bought it new) . After a accident where it was almost totaled out back in late 2019, it never drove the same. Ended up putting at least 4k into it up until July 2020 when the transmission failed. We threw in the towel and donated it to charity. Ended up with my mother's 2012 HL Limited and she ended up getting a CPO 2018 Lexus Lx. I still miss my 04 due to the nostalgia of it being my first car and, the smaller form factor. Also the aftermarket radio I got as a birthday gift was so much better than the Stock JBL GPS unit in the 2012 that cannot be swapped.

Really enjoy the 2021 Sienna, the gas mileage and tech is fantastic, but the seats being non removable is a deal breaker. I’ll be keeping my 2014 Sienna it’s a great van and payed for.
Still loving my 2005 Sienna XLE Limited! Almost 190k miles and everything still working like a true champ! Few times I've considered getting the new but just keep feeling the newest needs a few more tweaks before I pull the trigger to buy.
Recently parked my 2006 Sienna next to a brand new $50,000 Highlander. Vehicles appeared about the same physical size except the Highlander seemed kinda squashed down and with a ton of body scoops and angled lines. Didn't seem like much difference to me except mine has better visibility, a power sliding door and is stress free as I literally don't care about parking lot dents or getting in a minor fender bender - I'd probably laugh and shrug if the car got totaled.
Same here 2009 Sienna 240,000 miles. Just changed wheel bearing, tie rod, sway bar link as well. Got it aligned. Super smooth. I went ahead and cleaned the throttle body/maf sensor as well.
There’s a delay before the lift gate will start to open when you use the kick sensor, to give people time to move out of the way. If you try and kick it again too soon you’ll end up just closing/canceling the opening sequence.
A full spare tire is an option on the new Sienna and most of them are built with them. They're installed in the driver side rear where the "Fix a flat" is located.
I got a 2004 XLE and it still runs pretty damn good. Paints faded, sunroof dont open but everything else works great. 186,000 miles there should also be a huge bin under the front passenger seat that pulls out too
I love my 05 sienna it's identical to yours limited awd. I use it to haul stuff so having removable center seats is a big plus for me. Love my dual glove box, hidden pocket doors, removable center console. It has been super reliable. Only issue as all Sienna owners knows is the cracked dash, which mine has been replaced. Heck if you are in California, I would buy yours from you. It still looks really nice. I passed on the 2012 to 2020 models( removable center seats but what is that big track bumps and lack of storage up front )because of these same reasons, and now 2021 they made it worse. I only wished Toyota made the new sienna just as practical in use of space . I don't know why the Sienna designer do not continue these practicalities , it's what I really want in a reliable mini van. Pretty sure people to buy the new Sienna understand these things and buy the van not for hauling cargo but more focused on people transport like you are doing with 4 car seats. Please Toyota, make the 2022 Sienna with 2 options, practical van for people like me to haul stuff with the removable center seats , removable center console, to start with and one for passenger hauling.
If you got a 21 Limited with AWD, it would probably have the same features as far as wood, soft touch materials, and AWD, more power and twice the MPG. This kind of shows how excellent the 2004 was, and Toyota tried to reproduce that with more power and double the MPG
My uncle just got a 2005 sienna le with 155k miles a month ago and man that thing is so comfy i love it. the interior is in excellent shape and looks pretty much like new. the only one minor problem it has is that the automatic door doesn't fully close all the way and leaves a very very small gap, so he just turns off the power door and opens/closes it manually instead. other than that the minivan runs excellent and is a very comfy ride. i also have some family members that have/had 3rd gen siennas and those are also great. haven't been in one of the new ones yet but maybe some day.
A few features you missed on your 2004. -Middle row passenger side can be put next to the left seat or it can be put over to the right side. The console can be put between the rear seats and an OEM cup holder can snap into the floor between the front seats. Or, you can go to eBay and buy a 2nd console. The removable consoles allow for long items to be hauled between the front seats. -The hard backed seats are good for when kids spill something or kick the back of the seats. -The 3.3 has only 205 when running on 87 octane but 230 when running on premium. In 2007 they introduced the 3.5, which delivers over 260HP with 87 octane. I am not a fan of the new Sienna. It's a better people hauler, no arguing that but it's not much of a van.
I also have a 04 sienna, FWD, my van has a cassette player. :) She gets oil change every 5K km, that's about it. Family vacation with our dog every second year, kid activity like pumpkin patch ride, swim meet, ham radio swap meet, taking old furniture and appliances to recycle depot, numerous home depot trips, kid moved to university back and forth etc. We never have any issue with this van. Absolutely love my Sienna. Yes, the gas consumption isn't as good as the latest one, but for $ 35k plus tax and higher insurance for a new one, once i deduct the gas expense differences, that is easily equivalence to 15.000 gallon of gas. My desire of getting a new van immediately cool off. Even my van doesn't smell good, after spending 3k on water pump, timing belt, new sensors, transmission fluid flush, new set of new tires and brake This baby is good to go for many more years. By the way, I even plan to convert this van to a camper, keep using it as a "multiple purpose vehicle".
Seeing your old Toyota brings me back. I traded that one for the model in between your old model and the present sienna. I rented and was able to drive a 2023 Sienna on a recent trip in Alaska. Loved the gas mileage. Not the acceleration or the non flat smaller cargo space with no 2nd row seat removal. With the strength of your review and lack of availability of Toyotas in general (to say nothing of the outrageous markups) I’ll be keeping my old sienna a while. Maybe a different dealership. I purchased 10 Toyotas or Scions from them in the past but no loyalty to past customers.
Old Blue, my 2004 Sienna still wags its tail and likes to play catch. Yeah its getting into its late teens but I have absolutely no reason to stop driving it. This car had a few first-model-year quirks like wonky seatbelts and a sparetire that couldn't stay where it was put but overall its been a real gem. It gets used like a pickup truck and as a multi passenger wagon..its all good!
I went to test drive the new Sienna. but after watched you, I bought the 2005 Sienna clean limited fwd 💰. I can’t see myself writing checks every month for the next 6 years for it.
Really interesting comments. Lots of people here in Hawaii are still driving 2004 Siennas. A taxi service bought their 2004s brand new and now have 500,000 miles on each of them and still running smooth.
Sometimes you don't notice how many 2nd Gen Siennas are on the road until you own one. That happened to me after I purchased a used low-miles XLE from a private seller.
Plenty of gen 2’s running around, but I haven’t seen too many 3MZ-FE-powered (pre-2006) examples. 2005 LE AWD at 116k, bought new. Just has the aircon recharged and got new steel wheels and tires on it. I’m a college student and I think this van is incredible, on top of a certain amount of sentimental value having grown up riding that van. Wish the fuel efficiency was better though.
FYI Kirk the 2021 doesn’t come w a spare tire standard. However it is available on all trims (including AWD) for $75. Only negative is that It’ll reduce the cargo area
Looked at a 2021 hybrid at $43k, decided that it was too much for a minivan. Purchased a 2007 with 59k miles for $12k. I am glad I purchased the older one. No car payment and the van is a dream to drive. Only thing wrong is the dash has cracks due to heat, common on the 04-10 models.
I *just* traded in my 2004 Toyota Sienna XLE Limited AWD - it was IDENTICAL to yours. My dash cracked a *lot* more than yours did, unfortunately. The slider door cables being on the exterior of the vehicle was a huge design flaw in that year - mine broke, so I had manual sliders for the rest of the time I had it. Mine was an excellent van for the 5 years I had it - from 135,000 miles to 175,500 when I traded it in. It had finally reached the point of not being practical to keep repairing the things that were wearing out and breaking on a regular basis due to age.

That's impressive mileage considering the model year. I have a 2014 Sienna and it just hit 180k miles. Other than the A/C compressor and normal maintenance like oil changes, brakes, a battery, it hasn't had any issues. I have been thinking about getting a new Sienna but I can't rationalize the price, and I can't say that I am a fan of the only hybrid option. My V6 Sienna has enough get up and go to get on the highway and I am just not that sure about the weight of the vehicle and the hybrid engine, plus maintenance costs.
The newer one is safer, less expensive (in real terms), and has much better mpg. With all that said I’d save the $$$ and get an old high highway mileage well maintained old one from the early 2000s. You can buy aftermarket infotainment systems. I can’t imagine driving without a spare or tach.

My dad sold our 2013 Toyota Sienna SE to use my uncle's 2007 Toyota Sienna CE since it was free
and yeah my uncle died that's why we're using his van...
Forgot to mention that the new Sienna drives worlds better. Strong brakes, Handles great in corners. CVT is smooth and responsive compared to the 5 - speed. BUT the v6 is smoother and less vibration under medium load. Both are quiet, especially the hybrid when not being stressed. Hope this helps!
Unless the 2nd gen has new shocks, springs, rotors and pads, that could very well be due to age. I recently replaced all of those with OE parts on mine, and it feels incredible, tighter and smoother, just like a new car
I'm replacing rotors and pads this weekend. It does need new struts. That'll be next
@@peterruedig4647 even so, the biggest flaw on the second gen were indeed the brakes. I just remind myself I'm not in a Porsche when it comes time to stop. And yes, I've maintained & replaced brakes & suspension as necessary. The brakes are marginal at their best.

Curious, why did you pick FWD ?? I like you own a 2008 Sienna AWD - XSE , only difference is I reserved a AWD. The salesperson asked me why AWD , his opinion was the FWD is the way to go ..

People always give me looks when I say that I low key love my parent's 04 Sienna XLE Limited that they bought new before I entered high school. I got my permit in it, we toured universities in it, helped me move in/out of school, helped me w/ multiple apt moves as an adult, road trips, home depot runs, etc. etc. And it currently has only 80,000 miles for a 17 year old car so it's going to last till we go extinct.
Thankfully I have a 440i 6MT w/ an exhaust to redeem my street cred but I will always adore that van.
Love my pearl white 05 customer optioned 1owner Sienna. So fast but now that I removed the second row and pass side jumper seat .. This thing is getting converted into a camper using nice light weight birch and pine. Bar sink, hot water, wood floor, fridge etc.. Wish me luck, the floor is going to be the hardest part!!😔

Had a 2004 Sienna XLE AWD. It was pretty good. We drove 182k after 11 years. Did well in the snow, and I think it is still driving. Cons? Automatic doors wouldn’t shut in winter all the way in winter, and car would beep while driving, rear bumper tabs failed driving down the interstate, and we were dragging bumper down interstate, had to temp fix with duct tape, seat heaters failed, passenger window failed. Replaced with 2015 Highlander. 150k repair free miles. Nothing has failed yet.
I love the Sienna, mine is 2005 with 303K miles. Very comfortable for all around transportation and great for long trips. This van is among the most reliable vehicles out there.
We still have our 2005 too. An LE. Very comfortable. I can drive all day in it. New car seats seem harsher. Or I’m getting older. I found a 2005 LE with 61,000 miles. I wanted to buy it soooo bad. Wifey says no. 😢

@@hedgehogthesonic3181 transmission, engine & AC have been working perfectly since new and Dealer says it some transmission leaks but I don’t see any thing on the ground so I’m not concerned.
Incredibly the suspension is still original although dealer recommends replacing struts but again, I don’t see the need for replacing struts yet because it still handles great and no tire cupping or uneven wear found. No electrical issues and fuel injection issues, it still has the original fuel pump. Seats are soft and cushy and in excellent condition. Paint is acceptable but still original. Dealer replaced the dashboard free of charge in 2015 at around 200k miles because they found a small crack on passenger side and said it should not crack after 10 years or 200K lol 😂. My favorite road trip vehicle because of its 400-450 miles range between fill ups and there’s so much space for people and luggage.

I like the 2021 Sienna. I have another Toyota hybrid and the quality is the best. My 2004 Sienna with 190K won’t die so I have a hard time moving to the newest generation Sienna.
Only 100k miles to go. LOL. My parents were so upset when their 2004 sequoia got totaled last year. Still have the 2004 Avalon though. Still the best highway cruiser i have even rode in (that includes my 2016 S6), handling is terrible but its a cruiser.

It's got a rubber timing chain. Expense to replace. So we went with a 2008. Steel chain
We used to have a 2008 Toyota Sienna Limited, which we then got rid of in 2019 and upgraded to the 2020 Lincoln Navigator. But seriously, that Sienna literally held up through anything, and was so damn fast.
Lexus needs to hook you up. It does not compute that such a Toyota / Lexus dedicated enthusiast and journalist can't have one Lexus in his fleet.
I've once heard a joke about Toyota and Lexus vehicles. A Lexus is just a Toyota with better soundproofing. Rather than giving him a Lexus i think they should make his Prius into something more comfortable (softer seats, more leather/faux leather, better stereo, suspension upgrade, rattle fixes, etc.)

The efficiency of these two minivans has doubled over the past 17 years. From 18 mpg, up to 36 mpg. Plus, adjusted for inflation, the new van is $10,000 cheaper than the old one. Overall, I’m pretty impressed with the advancement.

@@allenfsanchez9572 Toyota hybrids are some of the most reliable Toyotas made. Taxi drivers push Prius/hybrid Camrys hard and fleet data shows usage to 300-400k no problems in NYC taxis. If you ever ridden in a NYC taxi you’ll know that’s severe duty 300-400k
I have the 2006 Limited Sienna AWD, which is considered the best year for this Sienna generation. It has only 78K miles on it (99% freeway miles). It comes out only for a long trip. Otherwise, it sits in the garage under a cover. It has gone all over the western United States. it one time saved our lives as we drove down a steep hill that had black ice in Lake Tahoe. Last month I had the original brakes from the factory changed on the front, but the Toyota dealership said that the rear brakes were barely worn and do not need to be changed. Service is always done at the dealership and the service advisors all admire my Sienna. My Sienna did not come with “Fix a Flat”. It came with only with run flat tires, no spare tire.

My daily driver is an 04 Sienna LE, 2wd. 274k miles and counting. Did struts, tie rods and sway bar links at 240k, other than that, just oil changes and brakes. I love it. It’s comfortable, its fast, it’s good in the snow, it can carry full sheets of plywood, and it gets 24 mpg. I put 120 miles a day on it commuting to work and back, and the interior looks the same as it did in 2004, nothing has worn out or broken, even the power doors work fine. It was well designed and well built, as a Toyota should be. All that to say I don’t think we’ll be saying the same thing about the 2021 Sienna in 17 years, which is a real shame.
Old is gold! I just subbed now you’ve helped me so much with getting a van! Just a note I wanted to add - 2004 was the first year of the second gen - it’s truly testament to Toyota’s perfection : they were creating some truly magnificent cars during that era. We’re just losing that emphasis in 2021

I just bought my ‘06 FWD LE. 250k miles, one owner, garage kept, for $1,000. It’s gonna be my new daily driver/weekend getaway rig. So far it’s impressed me.
Keep up the maintenance and your Toyota Sienna, can last up to 600,000.00 miles. A youtuber, post a video (2021), of her 2004 Toyota Sienna, with 601,000.00 miles.
My family still has out 2007 sienna with over 250k miles, sure it chirps on start up and the power side door lost its slide but the ye'ole sienna is still running strong!!

Good video. Just let my 04 Sienna go recently as it just turned 360,000 km, yes that’s km, as l am in Ontario Canada. This van dealt with the salt and snow and crap weather we get here, and NEVER let us down. It was the LE so had mid row captains chairs, and was awesome for travelling with another couple. I needed a truck, and l saw this 2014 Tundra with 350,000 km on it, so obviously it was highway driven. Have had it six months and not a worry in the world about it. I do still miss the Sienna, she took good care of us for 17 years, and is still on the road. May find ourselves in one again some day, but l will look for one that is a few years old. The new one you had there did less for me than your dressed out 04. I swear they were built better. Ours came from Tennessee when we got it. Cheers, and thanks again for the good info.

39K was a lot of money in 2004, today not so much.
The 2004 Sienna is 54k adjusted, he mentioned that in the video. Compared to the newer Sienna he tested which is 46K! I won't lie and say that the new Sienna has it's issues, but with the right mid cycle refresh they'll figure out some of the smaller details (more headroom, better build quality and fit and finish, removable second row seats, more power for the hybrid and hopefully the 12.3in infotainment found in the new Highlander).
You mean more power, safer, quieter, and way more MPG in the newer?
@@cbkenison More reliability too on the hybrid one, due to the simplicity of the planetary gear set that Toyota uses in their hybrids, just 2 electric motors and a few gears, no pressure discs, clutch, fluid valves, none of that.
My '04 XLE Limited AWD has 197,000 and running strong. Looking to convert the old girl into an overland camper soon.

Your 2004 is fancier then my 2006 but I love it. Hauled tons of kids for years. Now that they are grown and gone I have moved them to college and back and to college again. Not to mention hauls from Lowe’s and Costco. It has served us very well. Now I’m converting it into my camper van. Plenty of living to do in my Siena. ;) I’d be way more interested in upgrading if all the seats came out of the new one. I want ALL the access to the cargo/camping space.
My story and my plan is exactly the same as yours. Mine is 04 base trim, she has served us well. My kid just graduated this year, no more university move, house reno is done, I am about to retire, so I am going to convert the van into a camper.

I own a 2013 Toyota Sienna XLE, but I wish I had AWD as well. I love it lots & my nieces & nephews do as well. It works well with car seats & the LATCH system too.
I love how you keep your kids in straps as long as possible. I did my nieces & nephews as well when they were all little til age 8 in 1/2 yrs old. Then into booster car seats for as long as possible as well. My younger niece & nephew are still in boosters today will be til there ready for the adult seatbelt. Which is still a few yrs away!

We still have our 2006 Toyota Sienna Le that we brought new. It has 180k miles and it's running pretty well. Downside is it eats tires extremely fast, sliding doors needs some persuasion to close, and transmission needs to be flush because it's slipping a bit.

Adaptive cruise control on a 2004 sienna amazing I thought only high ends and exotic only have this feature at the time.
most exotic cars don't have adaptive cruise control system's LOL even the new ones don't.
Sad to see the newer model loses so much of the utility that the old model had. I've taken the seats out of our 2000 Toyota Sienna and hauled lumber and other materials many times over the years for home repairs.
4x8 sheets in back with tailgate closed. 10 '+ long boards easily fit diagonally inside with tailgate closed. 16' 2x12 lumber on roof rack for short distances. Also put a 32' ladder up there once. This generation of Sienna is a beast. Wheel barrows, table saw on roller stand, 12" chop saw on stand, 1700lbs of rock veneer stone, roofing, concrete bags. Rains here a lot and Sienna keeps everything dry and secure vs. my truck.
I was intending on making the same comment. I have a 2007 with 238000 miles on it and it's still going strong. Looks like I'll hang on to it as long as I can. The fact I can haul 4x8 sheets of plywood or drywall or a couch, bed, dresser with the rear door closed is fantastic. I've even hauled a piano laying on it's back and my John Deere riding mower with the seat removed.
Not being able to remove the second row ruins it.

I could do the same exact comparisons with my vans; 2004 LE, 2022 LE awd. I love them both The hybrid platform is just different, but in good way. I love the fact it runs only when required. I get 33 mpg highway and 40 mpg city. Yes things may feel cheaper in some ways but in the end 99% of all vehicles end up recycled in 20 years. You put the money in the moving components and in areas where it counts. I was born in 1967 and have a excellent account of all the cars throughout the years. Cars today are huge improvement of the past. I can live with cheap carpet and few squeaks, for great gas mileage and advanced safety features. I never thought for second when I purchased my 2004 that I would own it till now and have so few mechanical issues. You can reflect on the past, but not on the future. I will be upgrading my 2022 when the plug in comes in. The gas you save can make up for maintenance in the long run.
=) I have a 2004 Toyota Sienna Limited AWD also, 111, 000 miles and every thing still works, ( put Lexus GS 18" wheels on it 245/50r18, drives way more stable and converted all the lights to LED)

The 3MZ-FE is a great engine. Had one on my 04 Highlander Limited and it flew.
My mom had an 05 limited v6 until she got in an accident due to someone popping a tire and losing control and hit her....basically total loss. Bought it brand new with 12 miles on it too. Replaced it with a 15 Rx350 and it just doesnt feel the same. Miss our Highlander :'(
@@SimornMI miss mine too. My 04 was my grandfather's that he gave to me several years ago (he also bought it new) . After a accident where it was almost totaled out back in late 2019, it never drove the same. Ended up putting at least 4k into it up until July 2020 when the transmission failed. We threw in the towel and donated it to charity.
Ended up with my mother's 2012 HL Limited and she ended up getting a CPO 2018 Lexus Lx.
I still miss my 04 due to the nostalgia of it being my first car and, the smaller form factor. Also the aftermarket radio I got as a birthday gift was so much better than the Stock JBL GPS unit in the 2012 that cannot be swapped.

Really enjoy the 2021 Sienna, the gas mileage and tech is fantastic, but the seats being non removable is a deal breaker. I’ll be keeping my 2014 Sienna it’s a great van and payed for.

Still loving my 2005 Sienna XLE Limited! Almost 190k miles and everything still working like a true champ! Few times I've considered getting the new but just keep feeling the newest needs a few more tweaks before I pull the trigger to buy.
Recently parked my 2006 Sienna next to a brand new $50,000 Highlander. Vehicles appeared about the same physical size except the Highlander seemed kinda squashed down and with a ton of body scoops and angled lines. Didn't seem like much difference to me except mine has better visibility, a power sliding door and is stress free as I literally don't care about parking lot dents or getting in a minor fender bender - I'd probably laugh and shrug if the car got totaled.

206,000 miles on my 2010 Sienna and just replaced the wheel bearing. Super solid van with regular tires and fluid maintenance.
Same here 2009 Sienna 240,000 miles. Just changed wheel bearing, tie rod, sway bar link as well. Got it aligned. Super smooth. I went ahead and cleaned the throttle body/maf sensor as well.
Cars were really wholesome back then.
There’s a delay before the lift gate will start to open when you use the kick sensor, to give people time to move out of the way.
If you try and kick it again too soon you’ll end up just closing/canceling the opening sequence.
A full spare tire is an option on the new Sienna and most of them are built with them. They're installed in the driver side rear where the "Fix a flat" is located.

I got a 2004 XLE and it still runs pretty damn good. Paints faded, sunroof dont open but everything else works great. 186,000 miles
there should also be a huge bin under the front passenger seat that pulls out too
I love my 05 sienna it's identical to yours limited awd. I use it to haul stuff so having removable center seats is a big plus for me. Love my dual glove box, hidden pocket doors, removable center console. It has been super reliable.
Only issue as all Sienna owners knows is the cracked dash, which mine has been replaced.
Heck if you are in California, I would buy yours from you. It still looks really nice.
I passed on the 2012 to 2020 models( removable center seats but what is that big track bumps and lack of storage up front )because of these same reasons, and now 2021 they made it worse.
I only wished Toyota made the new sienna just as practical in use of space . I don't know why the Sienna designer do not continue these practicalities , it's what I really want in a reliable mini van.
Pretty sure people to buy the new Sienna understand these things and buy the van not for hauling cargo but more focused on people transport like you are doing with 4 car seats.
Please Toyota, make the 2022 Sienna with 2 options, practical van for people like me to haul stuff with the removable center seats , removable center console, to start with and one for passenger hauling.
That driving position in the new van looks really claustrophobic and I like the thicker sidewall tires of the older van.

If you got a 21 Limited with AWD, it would probably have the same features as far as wood, soft touch materials, and AWD, more power and twice the MPG. This kind of shows how excellent the 2004 was, and Toyota tried to reproduce that with more power and double the MPG
A more fair comparison would've been to the limited or Platinum. Got to play with the cards I've been dealt 😂
My uncle just got a 2005 sienna le with 155k miles a month ago and man that thing is so comfy i love it. the interior is in excellent shape and looks pretty much like new. the only one minor problem it has is that the automatic door doesn't fully close all the way and leaves a very very small gap, so he just turns off the power door and opens/closes it manually instead. other than that the minivan runs excellent and is a very comfy ride. i also have some family members that have/had 3rd gen siennas and those are also great. haven't been in one of the new ones yet but maybe some day.
A few features you missed on your 2004.
-Middle row passenger side can be put next to the left seat or it can be put over to the right side. The console can be put between the rear seats and an OEM cup holder can snap into the floor between the front seats. Or, you can go to eBay and buy a 2nd console. The removable consoles allow for long items to be hauled between the front seats.
-The hard backed seats are good for when kids spill something or kick the back of the seats.
-The 3.3 has only 205 when running on 87 octane but 230 when running on premium. In 2007 they introduced the 3.5, which delivers over 260HP with 87 octane.
I am not a fan of the new Sienna. It's a better people hauler, no arguing that but it's not much of a van.

I also have a 04 sienna, FWD, my van has a cassette player. :) She gets oil change every 5K km, that's about it.
Family vacation with our dog every second year, kid activity like pumpkin patch ride, swim meet, ham radio swap meet, taking old furniture and appliances to recycle depot, numerous home depot trips, kid moved to university back and forth etc. We never have any issue with this van. Absolutely love my Sienna.
Yes, the gas consumption isn't as good as the latest one, but for $ 35k plus tax and higher insurance for a new one, once i deduct the gas expense differences, that is easily equivalence to 15.000 gallon of gas. My desire of getting a new van immediately cool off.
Even my van doesn't smell good, after spending 3k on water pump, timing belt, new sensors, transmission fluid flush, new set of new tires and brake This baby is good to go for many more years. By the way, I even plan to convert this van to a camper, keep using it as a "multiple purpose vehicle".
Seeing your old Toyota brings me back. I traded that one for the model in between your old model and the present sienna. I rented and was able to drive a 2023 Sienna on a recent trip in Alaska. Loved the gas mileage. Not the acceleration or the non flat smaller cargo space with no 2nd row seat removal. With the strength of your review and lack of availability of Toyotas in general (to say nothing of the outrageous markups) I’ll be keeping my old sienna a while. Maybe a different dealership. I purchased 10 Toyotas or Scions from them in the past but no loyalty to past customers.
2004 Toyota Sienna XLE Limited, 168,759 miles
Old Blue, my 2004 Sienna still wags its tail and likes to play catch. Yeah its getting into its late teens but I have absolutely no reason to stop driving it. This car had a few first-model-year quirks like wonky seatbelts and a sparetire that couldn't stay where it was put but overall its been a real gem. It gets used like a pickup truck and as a multi passenger wagon..its all good!
I went to test drive the new Sienna. but after watched you, I bought the 2005 Sienna clean limited fwd 💰. I can’t see myself writing checks every month for the next 6 years for it.
Really interesting comments. Lots of people here in Hawaii are still driving 2004 Siennas. A taxi service bought their 2004s brand new and now have 500,000 miles on each of them and still running smooth.
Sometimes you don't notice how many 2nd Gen Siennas are on the road until you own one. That happened to me after I purchased a used low-miles XLE from a private seller.
Plenty of gen 2’s running around, but I haven’t seen too many 3MZ-FE-powered (pre-2006) examples. 2005 LE AWD at 116k, bought new. Just has the aircon recharged and got new steel wheels and tires on it. I’m a college student and I think this van is incredible, on top of a certain amount of sentimental value having grown up riding that van. Wish the fuel efficiency was better though.
FYI Kirk the 2021 doesn’t come w a spare tire standard. However it is available on all trims (including AWD) for $75. Only negative is that It’ll reduce the cargo area
I have a 2010 sienna 250k miles, amazing car not getting rid of it anytime soon.
Looked at a 2021 hybrid at $43k, decided that it was too much for a minivan.
Purchased a 2007 with 59k miles for $12k.
I am glad I purchased the older one. No car payment and the van is a dream to drive.
Only thing wrong is the dash has cracks due to heat, common on the 04-10 models.
where did you find a 07 with that low of miles for that cheap?
I *just* traded in my 2004 Toyota Sienna XLE Limited AWD - it was IDENTICAL to yours.
My dash cracked a *lot* more than yours did, unfortunately. The slider door cables being on the exterior of the vehicle was a huge design flaw in that year - mine broke, so I had manual sliders for the rest of the time I had it.
Mine was an excellent van for the 5 years I had it - from 135,000 miles to 175,500 when I traded it in. It had finally reached the point of not being practical to keep repairing the things that were wearing out and breaking on a regular basis due to age.
I would love to see and size comparison between the old sienna vs new!!
I’ve got the same exact vehicle. 250000 miles, still going strong. I love it. My overall mpg is 18.4 though, Kind of bad.
But it's a heavy safe van. Worth the extra gas

Great content. True about the overhead DVD. We hardly use ours anymore after 10yrs better to get some Tablets. Great family glad you switched to youtube full-time to spend more quality time.

That's impressive mileage considering the model year. I have a 2014 Sienna and it just hit 180k miles. Other than the A/C compressor and normal maintenance like oil changes, brakes, a battery, it hasn't had any issues. I have been thinking about getting a new Sienna but I can't rationalize the price, and I can't say that I am a fan of the only hybrid option. My V6 Sienna has enough get up and go to get on the highway and I am just not that sure about the weight of the vehicle and the hybrid engine, plus maintenance costs.
IMO I would still go for the 2004. Simple exterior design, tried and true V6 engine, mechanical all wheel drive, simple and functional interior.
The newer one is safer, less expensive (in real terms), and has much better mpg. With all that said I’d save the $$$ and get an old high highway mileage well maintained old one from the early 2000s. You can buy aftermarket infotainment systems. I can’t imagine driving without a spare or tach.

Still got my 2005 Sienna. Still runs like a champ. We looked at a new Sienna. The seats were uncomfortable for us. We are weird. Would of loved to have got another Sienna. Ended up with a Highlander. Oh well..
It’s just as nice! If not nicer cuz the highlander usually has better materials than the sienna
