Mayo if by any chance you wanted to play another Darksiders. I suggest Darksiders Genesis. It isn't a long game compared to the rest in the series. The one I personally enjoyed the most playing. Also it is a prequel.
Right! My friend told me back on release, "its a zelda game with god of war combat". And thats been my expectation from the moment i started it. And thats exactly what i got.
@@robbiealixsantos Darksiders has its issues, the puzzles arent one of them. If anything thats the main thing I love about that game, same with Darksiders 2. At least he's stating that he dislikes the game, not that its objectively wrong and I'm fine with that. One doesnt need to like every game, that said, we can shit all we want on him for not finishing a game.
@@meguy7735 It has elements from DMC, GOW and Zelda. But the biggest contribution comes from Zelda. The whole world is basically just a giant dungeon, where you have to use tools to get through, and while combat is important, the puzzles are just if not more important.
Regarding the combo counter, if you get the combo above 50 you start to earn GBP (Good Boy Points) and when you have 10000 you can trade them for a kiss on the lips from a beautiful woman
It's funny how everyone called this game a GOW clone back in the day, but now if you look at the 2018 GOW series its design took a lot of inspiration from Darksiders. The pseudo Metroidvania world with zeldaesque dungeons is straight from darksiders. Hell some of the puzzles involving these exploding balls are directly lifted from darksiders.
I don't remember anyone who was seriously into games like GoW ever call this a GoW clone. Could be some game journos who barely gave a crap that used that term. Back then they also called Far Cry 3 Skyrim with guns so what do they know? Comparison to Zelda however is something I saw constantly.
@@ToveriJuri It was definetly called a clone back in the day or at the very least was compared to GOW heavily. It is a valid comparison even if Darksiders does take inspiration from a lot of other games as well
@@ttaylor7604 Dark Siders were barely ever even talked about at all in character action (or hack and slash as many called them back then) circles just wasn't that much overlap "Normies" used to call pretty much any action game with remotely more involved combat than a zelda game a gow clone. But like I said I really didn't hear anyone who was heavily into the genre of games like GoW, DMC, or Ninja gaiden even consider Darksiders to be similar.
@@ToveriJuriMy guess is that people saw the floating button icons above enemy's heads when you can execute them and immediately thought of God of War. The combat is in DS is better as well.
I already know a lot of people won't understand his issues with the puzzles in this game. I understand that most viewers here don't actually hang out on Mayo's Onlyfans but he has mentioned more than once in different streams over there that his parents were killed in an unsolved murder by a group of puzzles. Mayo has managed to put most of his life back together but he can't get the closure to move on 100% because of those missing pieces in his Life. It's also in his autobiography titled Eat, Play, Quit (now available in audiobook format). Anyway I hope this clears stuff up regarding the distaste for puzzle.
Darksiders 2 is kind of my favorite. Micheal Wincott voicing death was an amazing decision. Only downside is that the economy of the game is pretty busted
Also health absorption build is broken, you don't have to put much effort into dodging as you can mash your way to victory and not loose health even on apocalyptic.
I'm wanting to replay the game in full with deliberately underleveled gear to force myself into making use of the weapon movesets and spells. Avoid the cheese builds and stuff.
If you're still in the mood for a God of War clone, I wanna give a shoutout to Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. It's not perfect, and I haven't finished the whole game yet. But it's really solid and plays quite nice. God of War 2 also has that flying section with the Pegasus. Though, that was actually pretty good.
As a GoW fan and Castlevania fan I don't recommend Lords of Shadows series at all. It takes all the wrong cues from GoW and instead of becoming a very interesting hack n slash it becomes a Simon says game with few hack n slash here and there. Though if Mayo would try, we'll see...
@@rawmaw exactly. and a very good game at that. LoS (1) and Dante are both great GoW substitutes with more than enough own charm to make them absolutely worthwile experiences. Darksiders (1) is also great, but something else entirely.
Isn't it a little bit... unfair... to rant about flying sections in DMC, and Bayonetta, and Darksiders - and oh so convenient to not mention that little game called "God of War 2", which also had one, eh?
I KNEW someone was gonna say that. No, it's not, because I have no bad memories of it. Far shorter and less annoying. I remember maybe even enjoying it. It's not a case of "flying section = bad". It's "bad flying section = bad." I'd have to go back and replay the section to reevaluate my feelings on it just for a 4 second comment in this video. Not gonna do that. However, when I finally get around to replaying GOW2, if I think it sucks now, I'll say it.
I played recently, its by far the best flying section, not just because it has more going on but the base combat of the game is mantained to a degree. And its short so it doesn't feel stale
@@llamadelreyii3369 That's how I remembered it. This is typical "You criticized it here but you loved it there! Hypocrite!" garbage. Disregarding all differentiating context.
1. Love this series so I'm glad you're covering it 2. Addmitebly this franchise takes a LOT of ideas from different games and sometimes without really understanding why they worked. But ,credit where its due, the combination of GoW and Zelda is awesome, which when combined with the story and A-tier voice acting help this series stand out on its own. Darksiders Genesis I feel is arguibly the most balanced game in the series (all the strengths but basically none of the weaknesses)
Yo, someone very positive on Genesis! You love to see it! And right on, the art direction, story, writing and voice acting in these games and general universe is a great strength. 3 felt off in the writing, but still. I hope the next game will be more in line with 1 and 2.
It's more Zelda than God of War if you ask me. Darksiders 1 definitely had some mediocre parts, but I did finish it and overall I enjoyed my time with it. I don't think I'll ever play it again though. I never played the rest of the franchise, but I did hear 2 was alright.
Darksiders 2 was such a headache for me, I put cheats on just to get through the story mode, the world didn't feel as good as 1st one, Good lord what a snoozefest it was for me.
@@eradicatedpulse6896 the puzzles are way better than the first game though and the last 2 levels of darksiders 2 are the best in the series. Main issue with the second game is the second part in the undead desert place whatever its called is way too long
I feel like no health regen after fights in these types of games should be a hardest difficulty sort of thing so that more casual players won't have many frustrations but hardcore players can satisfy their masochism
Bro... the game is a Zelda-like with GoW combat (it's how it was sold), of course it has puzzle dungeons, LOL, that's all the point! If it didn't have then the devs would have been liars. That also probably explain the puzzle bosses (use the right item to access weak point -> done). I don't know who sold this to you as a GoW clone, but he was wrong.
I like flying sections in hack n slash games most of the times. I like doing something diffirent for a little bit. Switching weapons isnt the only good type of variety in games.
Precisely. If it were good, then I'm all for it. Get ready. If the dragon section in the dark ages is fun, we'll see "BUT YOU COMPLAINED ABOUT FLYING IN DARKSIDERS!"
@@underthemayo Lords of Shadow is another shameless god of war clone, but I think it's got a lot of neat things in it that you'd appreciate. Particularly, I think you'd like how it uses fixed camera angles to show off its environments and their scale from cool perspectives.
Darksiders 2 goes all in on the Zelda dungeon design. If you enjoy the level design, puzzles, and exploration of DS1 then you will love DS2. DS2 has the best puzzle integration of the series but the game is too long and overstays its welcome by the end. Now DS3 is where the combat peaked for the trilogy. It is by far the deepest, most challenging, and most rewarding combat in the franchise. It is lighter on the puzzles and the level design is more straightforward. I would highly recommend givng both 2 & 3 a try, but I thinkn you would enjoy 3 more.
Oh a DS3 fan! DS2 fan here, I LOVE DS2 more than 3 but I really like Fury's character growth, I didn't know that DS3 has a deeper combat can you perhaps elaborate on it? I'm planning to replay the game.
War isn't the most exciting character, but that's actually something that kind of gets integrated into the narrative of the franchise as a whole. He's loyal, blunt and in his own way, maybe a bit naive. In Genesis (a spin-off where you play as him and Strife) he's used as the straight man act to make Strife's comedy shine a bit. Generally, the horsemen all have different personalities. War: Very little personality. Stern, angry and somber. Death: Impatient, incredibly sassy at times, a bit rude, but not generally uncaring. Fury: Quite arrogant, very rude, needlessly condescending, all that possibly because of feelings of inadequacy towards the other horsemen. Strife: A jokester who won't miss out on any opportunities to make a witty remark. Not as unwaveringly loyal as War and more prone to question his directives. More empathic than the other horsemen. Has feelings of remorse about something in his past he's not willing to talk about.
War has his wit, diplomacy and honor that do shine through. Like when the Phantom General says "You have killed many of my warriors" and War replies "i have yet to find a warrior among you." Or with Samael: "War... are you here to play executioner? They should have sent all four of you." "Has prison made you a coward, Samael?" And *especially* with the Abyssal Gladiator. First, the Gladiator mocks War for being shorter than he thought, then says "let's see how you fare, HORSEman, with only two legs to carry you." To which War says "You can look me in the eye when I kill you." When War punches the Gladiator off Ruin, the Gladiator loses his sword... but War kicks it back. And when it's time for the execution, in a beautiful flowing motion he hacks off the Gladiator's legs, both at once. Followed up by impaling him on Chaoseater... and holding the Gladiator at eye height. War returned the Gladiator's mockery through action, not words, *and* made good on his promise. Generally when interacting with characters like the Wardens, Ulthane, Azrael and even Uriel and Samael, fighting isn't the first thing that's on War's mind. That's where he has his moments of diplomacy and simply hearing other people out. War's got reason to be moody and brooding, but he does not forget his intellect and knows how to get things done. I like him.
He'd need to dive straight into Serious difficulty to get a proper impression. Sam games' enemy count can seem like pointless padding until those enemies are all capable of actually killing you, at which point proper rhythmic combat is established.
I understand your gripes with the game, but I honestly love the Black Throne because it offered the most interesting and challenging puzzles in the game. I also like the aesthetic design with the tower being this ever-shifting mass as if it were alive. The only thing I have a problem with is the repeated boss fight against the iron golems, but that's about it. I know most Darksiders fans hate the Black Throne, but I love it. Other than that, each Darksiders game has its own pacing and padding issues, minus maybe Genesis. If you're willing, you should try Darksiders 2. It does have its own set of flaws, but the combat, puzzles, dungeon design, and bosses were greatly improved.
Yeah I believe that's him. Heard him in quite a few games I've played, Nier, Drakengard 3, DMC4 and darksiders are the ones I can think of. But I think there are a couple more.
@@Chud_Bud_Supreme Kudos to him for being honest, nothing wrong with that, problem is he's become quite predictable that he won't enjoy 90% of anything not named Doom Eternal, lol.
darksiders 1 is truly my favorite game. But I can see your point of view and agree that this is not the game for you. I suggest you play Darksiders 2, it's way bigger, it has the health system you like, the ability to make different builds, and the number of puzzles is relevant to the fighting. I like Darksiders 1 more cuz it's a smaller game. It's good to see an honest review.
It's not that it's "not the game for me". There's a lot I liked about it. I'm glad I played it. The structure near the end is not for me, and from what I've seen that's not controversial. But i think the game truly would have been better without such a forgiving health/checkpoint system.
Oh look, it's the worst reviewer on UA-cam again. Just kidding, but YT lately keeps recommending me videos from people complaining about Mayo. Didn't watch a single one because I expect it's the usual "his opinion differs from my opinion, so therefore I'm right and he's wrong" bullshit.

You like hack 'n' slash and you didn't play/make a video about Prince of Persia: Warrior Within?? Bruh... I love classic God of War, but Warrior Within slaps!
I am replaying the game at the moment. And the first thing I realised, is that the opening of the game, is VERY simuar to the God of War 2 opening. Especially gameplay wise. You start at full power at first, and after a while, your powers get drained bit by bit. Until you end up as a walking corpse, and the main bad guy just ends up killing you. And you come back from the dead, with the goal to exact revenge on him.
Hope you try Darksiders 2 that was a game that I enjoyed much more than 1. The fact that they give you a horse for large areas alone is a big improvement.
@@underthemayo that’s fair. I think external factors are where the nier series strives. I personally enjoy the gameplay but I think it excels in atmosphere, music, characterization, and story!
The 2nd game was the GOW clone. The first was more Ocarina of Time. The 3rd game was a Dark Souls clone. And the 4th one nobody talks about was trying to cash in on one of those generic twin stick shooters.
Wait until try Darksiders 2. I considered it a puzzle game because they take probably 70% of the game. Also, fuck people who say you should finish games.
About the main character moving to slow, I have a similar problem with Dark Souls. Some levels are soooo big and my character is moving sooo slow, especially in Anor Londo, the Crstal Cave, Izalith. My first time in Dark Souls, I didn't mind it so much because I was amazed by the level design, but the more I play it the more annoying it becomes. It's probably even worse in Dark Souls since in Darksiders at least you respawn fairly close to where you die. Although the problem may be not the player movement speed but rather the immense amount of distance you have travel to get where you want. In Horror games movement usually is slow too, but you don't feel it so much because the levels are more compact. By the way, since you like old style fps, I was curious to know your opinion on the good old Turok games, those that were released on N64., since know they are all remastered and ported on pc (except Rage Wars, but that was all about multiplayer anyway). I enjoyed them a lot more than Doom, especially the first game thanks to the more organic and large-scale level design, compared to cubic corridors and rooms in Doom. I also liked that there is no fall damage, you could fall ten miles down and be okay (if there was any surface below to land on).
I love the Darksiders series, I can`t wait for the 4th game. Since Strife uses guns it makes sense that the gameplay should be like the game wanted Dead. Also I know you like Hack & Slash game so here are some H&S games you can check out: Soulstice Valkyrie Elysium Wanted: Dead Etenights Stella Blade Project DT Project M Lost Soul Aside Phantom Hellcat Arise of Awakener Granblue Fantasy Relink Yasuke A Lost Descendent Shred & Tear: Explosive Kajun Phantom Blade SuperSimmer Astor: Blade of the Monolith Captain Blood There are a lot more that are out there, H&S games are really fun to play and I'm so glad to see more of them. Shouts out to hack & slash games, they are making a comeback.
Eeeeeey i see you again! :D Glad to see Soulstice still high on the list! Some additions for all who are interested in games in this genre: - The Lords of Shadow games (mainly 1 and 2) - The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile - Genokids - Gori: Cuddly Carnage - Jamphibian - Mightreya - Enenra Daemon Core - and i want to add Immortal: And the Death that Follows.

As a Die Hard Darksiders Fan it's a shame you didn't finish this Yeah The Black Throne can be a major drag but as one who completed it more times over what comes after is the good stuff
MayorHairBear's videos on the Darksiders series are a lot stronger reviews, in praise and criticism and in-between alike. Can recommend checking those out.
Out of available Darksiders games (not counting Genesis), first game is the most balanced. I like Darksiders 2's combat the most and Death is pretty great character to follow. But I hate exploration and quests. Darksiders 3 have the most interesting character-centric story, but combat... I hate Souls-like games and I struggled to complete it on hardest difficulty. If I ever replay Darksiders 3 I will play it on easiest difficulty to not be traumatized again. First Darksiders is in the middle compared to others. It have okay story, good combat and exploration, it's the least frustration to play. The game does falls flat after spiders, but after replaying it multiple times I'm not as frustrated with it as I'm used on my first playthrough. Abyssal armor is what motivates me to complete the game every time. And about Darksiders Genesis... I like it a lot. That's all.
Wait did everyone recommend this game to Mayo as a God of War clone? Why would anyone do that when Darksiders 1&2 have more in common to games like Zelda (especially 2). Also doesn't Mayo hate games with metroidvanias elements like a lot of backtracking which Darksiders games have
No, I don't hate Metroid años ELEMENTS. I'm just typical not a fan of straight up Metroidvania games. And this game is SO God of war. The combat is nearly identical. The feel of attacks, the executions and xp system, the magic system, the tone, the platforming and the style of puzzles. I'm sure there's plenty of Zelda in there too but it's not wrong to call this a gow clone.
I'll give you some of that. The health system was botched, The open esq areas were a little too large and the bosses are definitely nothing special. Design wise, they're good. But they just don't provide that level of challenge and balance. I honestly think the devs wanted to make their version of GOW without making it a GOW clone and in this case, I would've taken a GOW clone looking back at it. But I didn't think Darksiders was inherently a bad game. If anything, I felt satisfied that I plat it (Plat = Platinumed). I do remember when I played it through, it did get me thinking that the traveling through wormhole to cut back on backtracking reminded me of how 2018 GOW played. And then I was like why couldn't GOW 2018 be like Darksiders. You'd still have the traversal and platforming options, the combo counter is still there, and it has way better bosses. Now I'll be clear and say that I still like the newer GOW games. But I'll admit it has more faults than the older games. The bosses are a mixed bag, There's so many walkie talkie segments. In fact the 2018 game started out very slow in the first two hours. It gradually got better. But it wasn't until you retrieve the Blades of Chaos that it becomes the game at its peak. I still enjoy the new games. But I won't lie. I felt like some things were missing. So I can't say I was disappointed with the new direction they took. I was expecting the play style to be very different and it was. Ragnarok did improve on some things like the bosses and you still had a little more traversal options. But it still proplexes me that they didn't have platforming. With what improvements they had, they also made things worse. Like you, I wasn't a fan of Atreus and the fact that you had to play as him in some areas Was salt to the wound. I can only compare him to one character I have complete distain for. And that's Steve Burnside from RE Code Veronica. Yeah. That bad. Okay maybe he's not as annoying. But I'd still want to play the Ghost of Sparta of this pimp squeak. GOW Ragnarok was okay. I personally wouldn't mind them taking my favorite series in a different direction. But that's the thing though and it's like what one of my other favorite channels said, by changing things to improve them or thinking you're improving them, you're going to get the ire of diehard fans and it becomes a question of well was this the right decision to make or not. I honestly believe that's what it boils down to. Darksiders though could've been a perfect template for the new direction for GOW. But they wanted it to be a big budget movie with gameplay in between. The problem is they just didn't find a good balance and I think that's why you and to some extent, me didn't like everything about The new games. But you tell me what you think Mayo. I'd like some feedback.
Would really love to see you cover Darkwood. If I remember correctly, you did mention it in you video about the structure of survival-horror games, but it was never clear to me if you'd played through the entirety of it. The game isn't perfect by all means and you were right to point out that it seems closer to a survival game than a survival-horror. If you know the game well enough, you can totally break it. The pressure simply collapses. Nevertheless, the atmosphere is so thick, the artwork is so refined. It's one of my favorite games, that is held down only by the poor design behind its difficulty. PS : Having been playing Conscript recently, it's so very clear to me that its combat system was inspired by Darkwood's !
Darksiders is less of a God of War clone and more of mash of great features of games the devs like (the comic book insoired story, the WoW artstyle, god of war like combat, and zelda style puzzles and exploration) depending if you like all thosse combinations, this is going to be one of your favorite series but thats a aquired taste, i frankly love the over enphasis on puzzling and exploration since vigil would never get close to the quality of Santa Monica/Capcom/team Ninja/Platinum but what is there is very good including the puzzles, the sequels expand that in diferent manners and i still have a blast getting into it (Darksiders II is more like a open world action rpg with a bit of loot that i frankly like more than the gow reboot, and Darksiders III goes more for combining Dark Souls, God of War and Metroid Prime since takes away the dungeons for a more interconected world) i did'nt played DS Genesis yet but people say is good if you like Diablo I really cant wait to see what kind of mixture they will make on Darksiders 4 (Each game you control one horseman)
Does your prior aversion to GoW-likes mean that you never checked out Dante's Inferno? Game is so campy but I have a lot of nostalgia for it. I can't tell you if it holds up, but I think it's worth your attention as a cult Character-Action game
Darksiders 2 is a lot better but also has RPG systems that you might dislike. But it also has a lot of cool combo potential, much more than the first game. Also know that you'll be going in for a lot of exploration. It's a pre-BOTW style Zelda game after all, just with slightly flashier combat. In other words, it's a dungeon crawler with somewhat flashy combat.
Darksiders is more of a Zelda than GoW, if you want better combat there is DMC (3 and 5 are the best, but if you crave being better at combos, 4), also Dantes Inferno.
I actually covered DMC1 2 and 3 right before this video. I get the structure is Zelda like, but the combat flow and the mechanics around them are more GOW.
I hope you get to check on the sequels, they are but improvements but with some contextual baggage between them that can really explain some of their decisions in design.
Never saw you covered this. Really enjoyed the first two. Also the top down coop game. They kinda filled the void left by the lack of Legacy of Kain games. Excited for the soul reaver collection coming. Hope it’s well done and successful.
I mean it cant be the worst, i heard some guy called "Under The Mayo" does game reviews and he absolutely sucks at those. His review is probably the worst.
Good review! You're right about that final tower level, it has some neat puzzles but it's way too much. I love the Darksiders franchise and hope you take the time to try the other games because they all have something to love about them, especially the second one. Cheers!
Seems like a fair assessment of his experience with the game. From the fun combat to "puzzle rush" at the end. Never finished God of War 2018 and I finished this one three times. I'd take puzzles over rowing boats any day.
Whatever you do, don't play Darksiders 3. It's got a lot of souls-like elements that you won't like. However, you might actually like Darksiders: Genesis. It's an isometric action-adventure game where you either play as War as a hack-and-slash fighter, or his brother Strife who plays like a twin-stick shooter. Speaking of twin-stick shooters, Nex Machina continues to be the best one of those ever!
Darksiders 1 has flaws mechanically. So if you play it for mechanical depth, probably you will feel meh. I love it primarily for the atmosphere and story and characters. Also it is short and very varied in its short span. For ref - Darksiders 2 strongly outstays its welcome. Overall not a must-play, but a solid good game Everything in the series after it was meh for me
Tried it. This game feels like a DMC clone. I can't stand the anime style combat. If the old GoW games were anything like this, then I'm glad they changed the combat system.
Great video. I'm a huge fan of this game, all your criticisms are fair. I personally enjoyed the puzzle gauntlet, but I can see how others wouldn't. I hope you watched a video of the final boss and cutscene. Glad you enjoyed it overall.
I have tried several of the darksiders games, and I really didn't like them. I never made it more than 30-40 minutes into any of them. I'm not sure why - they just didn't click with me.
Dude I'm surprised you hadn't played this game. Also glad you found some enjoyment. Definitely a 6/10 game. Good points to agree on. I quit around the same time you did, felt very similar, and the Puzzles left me feeling soulless. Gave me headaches. I'd avoid D3. Overall it's kind of hard to take Darksider games serious. In GOW 2018 getting your health refilled was a blessing after death, cause in GMGOW difficulty you're like 2 shots dead anyways.
Second Darksiders was better in terms of combat (more weapons, better combos with crossovers) and way, way better in terms of puzzles. But it still can be boring and long. And it's more like Zelda series, even Metroid (kinda). Artdesign is great in D2, and the soundtrack... Two words. Jesper. Kyd. I really hope you'll check out the second one, even if you dislike it.
@@underthemayo idk if it helps with crashing but there is a beta version to opt into on steam which was gonna be a big patch before the team working on it got canned I've been playing it recently without crashes but I haven't tried it without the beta
I thought the combat was a bit under baked. Too few moves to work with. The later games did it better with an expanded list as well as adding a dedicated crossover combo branch. Huge Darksiders fan and been slowly building up a catalog of Darksiders content on UA-cam. Can't say i completely agree with all your opinions on the title but am glad that someone like yourself has given the franchise a shout out. If you like Darksiders, mayhaps you'll find something interesting in Soulstice, a game in this genre from 2022. The writing and tone feels close in line to Darksiders for me. Much more focused on combat than puzzles though and doesn't feel directly Darksiders-inspired by way of gameplay, so those are notable differences. EIther way-- well worth looking into! It's become one of my favourites in the Character Action genre alongside Darksiders 1 and 2 (and Genesis is that one may be counted.)

@@heraldofwoe3686 Got ya! Hope that whenever you may be able to play Soulstice it will be a fun time. I don't know what consoles you have but i do know it's on Steam as well. Probably requires a fairly powerful computer though. And fair!
Ironically i think you will really like Darksiders 3, people say its more "souls like" but not really, its like those cases where people call one game a "survival horror" but its a good action game instead.
I have (maybe) a hot take: I loved the flying section in GOW2. After some playtroughs it becomes a fine tuned challeng, learning the moves of the enemies and the skills that we have is really great, the spetacle is great, and killing that dude and later finding his weapon is really cool
I let's played this game a few years back and ended up deleting it because I had such a miserable time with the game. I should point out I'm EXTREMELY visually impaired and I went through some tough life stuff at the time. So I don't know if that impacted my experience, probably did. But man I agree with you the game is too long and you go far too long in between story beats.
Oh yes, the famous final act with portals... Sounds exactly as it feels. Final custscene has a pretty cool plot twist which I like a lot - but getting to it... yeah. And two final bosses are quite a trash too, so you didn't really lose anything. Now, if by chance someone also told you to play Darksiders 2 and 3 - for the love of Zeus, don't do this. As much as we here enjoy with "I'm fcking shocked" - but no, just spare yourself from this misery.
I've heard this series is up and down. But if a new one comes and goes with this old school hack and slash feel, I'm totally down to play it.

It is a valid comparison even if Darksiders does take inspiration from a lot of other games as well
@@ttaylor7604
Dark Siders were barely ever even talked about at all in character action (or hack and slash as many called them back then) circles just wasn't that much overlap
"Normies" used to call pretty much any action game with remotely more involved combat than a zelda game a gow clone.
The combat is in DS is better as well.
yeah Journos labeling games as GOW clones is cringe, when GOW is a clone of DMC, I am glad people don't listen to journos anymore

I hate when checkloints refill your health. It just makes me feel like I'm grinding instead of getting better

1. Love this series so I'm glad you're covering it
I don't remember much puzzles in Genesis tho, it was mostly just a hack and slash, wasn't it ?
Yo, someone very positive on Genesis! You love to see it! And right on, the art direction, story, writing and voice acting in these games and general universe is a great strength. 3 felt off in the writing, but still.
I hope the next game will be more in line with 1 and 2.
The vessels are probably inspired by the bottles in Zelda.
So when are we getting Darksiders 2? Which is considered far better than 1 in both writing and gameplay. Less hack n slash, more combat RPG.

It's more Zelda than God of War if you ask me. Darksiders 1 definitely had some mediocre parts, but I did finish it and overall I enjoyed my time with it. I don't think I'll ever play it again though. I never played the rest of the franchise, but I did hear 2 was alright.
Hey mayo, I know you usually don’t do sequels, but you should really do Darksiders 2. That’s generally considered the best game in the series.

Like when the Phantom General says "You have killed many of my warriors" and War replies "i have yet to find a warrior among you."
Or with Samael: "War... are you here to play executioner? They should have sent all four of you."
"Has prison made you a coward, Samael?"
And *especially* with the Abyssal Gladiator.
First, the Gladiator mocks War for being shorter than he thought, then says "let's see how you fare, HORSEman, with only two legs to carry you."
To which War says
"You can look me in the eye when I kill you."
When War punches the Gladiator off Ruin, the Gladiator loses his sword... but War kicks it back.
I like him.
Anybody wants this guy to play the classis Serious Sam First Encounter?👇🏻

If a game isn’t god of war 2 or doom eternal it’s trash
Who will you vote for in November?

Does your prior aversion to GoW-likes mean that you never checked out Dante's Inferno? Game is so campy but I have a lot of nostalgia for it. I can't tell you if it holds up, but I think it's worth your attention as a cult Character-Action game
Yup, exactly. I want to finally play that too.
Hope it’s well done and successful.
the first game is tough, i know. I really recommend you the second and third game, specially the second, its one of my favorite games.
Overall not a must-play, but a solid good game
Everything in the series after it was meh for me
Tried it. This game feels like a DMC clone. I can't stand the anime style combat. If the old GoW games were anything like this, then I'm glad they changed the combat system.
I always felt darksiders was a dark zelda clone.
Have your concerns with Silent Hill 2 Remake been calmed a little with the new trailer? That’s shit was dope as hell.
Story concerns, a bit.
Great video. I'm a huge fan of this game, all your criticisms are fair. I personally enjoyed the puzzle gauntlet, but I can see how others wouldn't. I hope you watched a video of the final boss and cutscene. Glad you enjoyed it overall.
Surely one day we'll get a review of the Ninja Gaiden trilogy (the REAL one: NGB, NG2, 3RE)
I kinda hope you give the other Darksiders games a shot. I'm really curious how you'll feel about 2 in particular
I have it on steam but it crashes
@@underthemayo Damn. Even Deathnitive Edition? Original PC release was a buggy mess. Hope you'll find a way to make it work.
@@underthemayo idk if it helps with crashing but there is a beta version to opt into on steam which was gonna be a big patch before the team working on it got canned
I've been playing it recently without crashes but I haven't tried it without the beta
Hopefully the next title will get the registration it deserves
@@jurtheorc8117 I have been suggested this title before. I was interested but if I remember correctly, I just do not have the console for it. It's definitely on my list for games to check out later. Unfortunately it will just HAVE to be later
Also, played Genesis. Not sure if I would call it CAG but certainly a action adventure
@@heraldofwoe3686 Got ya! Hope that whenever you may be able to play Soulstice it will be a fun time. Fair warning that it's got quite a lot of mechanics, some of which divisive, and drags on a bit in the middle. But the moment-to-moment gameplay does feel good and the story, writing and characters are a strong point for sure.
Warts and all, i love it and am excited for more.
Darksiders is a puzzle game. It was a Zelda clone with better combat and a more adult setting.
Yes, that's why it's found under the puzzle category.
@@underthemayo Just like Zelda isn't.
Is there any game that this guy like that is not Doom Eternal, Ninja Gaiden and the original God of War trilogy?
Into the Breach, Slay the Spire, Sifu, Arkham City, Dusk, Streets of Rage 4, Shadow Warrior 3.........
God of war mixed with zelda is usually how people described it
Darksiders 1&2 were some of my favorite games back in the day.
Darksiders lifted from everything. GoW,Zelda,Portal,a lil DMC...thats what i didnt like at the time.✌🏾
Attention span of a toddler during puzzles
I played this game a long time ago and stopped playing at the end of the game, I just couldn't stand the puzzles.
I have (maybe) a hot take: I loved the flying section in GOW2. After some playtroughs it becomes a fine tuned challeng, learning the moves of the enemies and the skills that we have is really great, the spetacle is great, and killing that dude and later finding his weapon is really cool
Yeah I remember the flying part of GOW2 being alright thats why I didn't mention it.
This game has been on my pile of shame for over decade and im still debating on whether I want to play it or not. 😅
it's a good game, not perfect but really good
14:58 is this a Dune reference
next title? castlevania lords of shadow series
Hey Mayo are you going to cover BLACK MYTH WUKONG
Likely not. Nothing about it really grabs my attention.
