Mayo, any chance you'll play Payday 2 and do a video on its mechanics? I know the game isn't exactly new, but I'm really interested in hearing your input on the game. Cheers dude.
I wonder how many people got stuck because of the floppy disk lock. I ran in circles for almost an hour thanks to that and that’s coming from someone who was alive when floppys were still a thing
I think that was the most BS moment in the game, and is my go-to example for the game being a bit much at times. A niche bit of knowledge that is pretty much forgotten.
@@underthemayo Fun fact. I played the game with my 45 year old partner and we solved it relatively fast because I knew it I had to do something to the disk to unlock it but didn't know what because I was born in 1994. So I kept asking him "did floppy disks back then had some locking mechanism or something"? And after a few minutes he was like "WAIT, YES! I REMEMBER!" and we solved it. It's a bullshit mechanic for younger people, but I think it was just there as a salute to older gamers, which is who the game is targeted at. We also solved the clock puzzle in like 1 minute hehe ;P By far the toughest ones imo were the cash register one and the operation room corpse. We also took way to long to solve the gas pipe but that's because idiot me didn't notice that the hint was relative to the pipes being placed vertically
3:22 I’d disagree, the 90’s horror games had tons of notes/ letters/ books/ journals/ etc., even the games with voice acting from multiple characters made you read a lot if you wanted to fully understand what’s going on. It’s better than the main character pontificating when they’re alone, that’s for sure.
Tank controls are superior with fixed camera, because with modern controls you will switch directions when the camera changes instead of just running straight.
I get so bothered by folks acting like fixed cameras are just some outdated thing that they had to do in the 90s. I don't want to feel empowered and free in a horror game. That makes it harder to ever be scared.

12:26 Not sure if it matters, but the image of the two humans was one of several pieces of information stored in a capsule that was launched into space decades ago on the off chance it was discovered by intelligent life on other planets. It’s a way for humans to communicate that, “we’re here on this planet, and this is what we look like.”
My wallet is getting ripped apart. First the Dead Space Remake. Then Resident Evil 4 Remake and then The Last Of Us coming to PC next week. Silent Hill 2 Remake later this year. And now your showing us this masterpiece??? Holy sh!t is this a great year so far if you’re a horror fan

its really heartwarming to see other people who enjoy this type of camera angles and the old school survival horror games. I hope there would be more attention to this genre in future.
For the second puzzle I always thought of it as more of an "are to" puzzle. People are to earth, as alien are to starts, pharaohs are to Pyramids, as bees are to hive. Maybe my brain works a bit different but I thought it made a lot of sense once I figured it out.
One of my favorite aspects about fixed camera angles in survival horror games is sometimes not being able to visualize the location of an enemy if they happen to be in a room with you. When you have to go by sound to decipher which enemies are present, as well as where they are, it makes the game inherently scarier. It's the reason why Resident Evil 1 Remake is my #1 favorite survival horror title. The game masters this art so well. Super happy to see that this classic style of survival horror is making a resurgence with games like Tormented Souls and Signalis :)
12:26 I know that this is an old video but I wanted to add what I think is the logic to this puzzle. I think the puzzle is more a "are to" puzzle. So the earth is circled in a dark thick line to emphasize that its related to the circle on the key. Then what is is that that Earth are to Humans, or Circle are to Humans. Then if we follow that logic it's Aliens is to Stars or Aliens are to Star-shape. Pharaohs are to Pyramids, or Pharaohs are to Triangle and then Bees are to Honeycomb or Bees to Hexagon. I think the problem with this puzzle is the arrow pointing at the humans which if you are trying to take a lot of stock into could mess up how you think of the puzzle
The Monkey puzzle was the only one that got me stuck. However, I didn't feel bad looking up a solution because I knew I could've brute forced the combination eventually if I didn't mind wasting my time. Great game overall and I really enjoyed the puzzles, but agree they were definitely on the extreme side. I think the game could've really benefitted from a puzzle difficulty setting like the Silent Hill games. Not everyone will be able to figure them out, unfortunately.
I'm happy you finally got around to playing Tormented Souls and enjoyed it! I understand and agree with all the constructive criticisms you gave. I'm sure for the sequel, they will get it all sorted out if they do it since they've laid the perfect groundwork for a superior sequel. For their first attempt though at trying to recreate what made the classic survival horror special, I think they gave it a solid shot! It's no Resident Evil or Silent Hill, but it deserves some attention from people who like this style of survival horror game and I hope this video helps that along.
Running around lost, taking your own notes, the joy of getting unstuck is what made those older games slap. No handholding, no Google. Also, for an indie dev, this game is more polished and more survival horror than anything capcom and the like is spewing out these days.
What you say about the old games not relying on note reading is false. The story you see in the game is just surface level in old school RE. The meat and potatoes of the story and the tragedy of it all are in the files and notes.
It's pretty cool that Survival horror is making a resurgence but I'm not seeing any innovation or advancement especially in the management of combat and story. We're seeing the same things reskinned with nicely stylized locals but nothing fresh.
My "I should have waited to approach with fresh eyes" puzzle was the skeleton. I became convinced early on, for some reason, that the first line of the riddle was an intro and not part of the solution itself -- probably because there were five switches and six lines, so I figured it would be hitting each switch once. At some point I straight up abandoned the "hitting each switch once" mentality... but never thought to re-examine my dumb logic of ignoring the first line. Sigh... Some of these puzzles I think just needed something to clue you in when you're wrong. Like the pipe puzzle in the end: if everything I'm doing is blocking leaks and whatnot, then how about when I get it wrong, we see an animation of where the water is leaking? There's too much guess-and-check involved. The hint shows you open and closed, but only for vertical pipes -- so is it closed when the switch is horizontal, or when the switch is perpendicular to the pipe? It's annoying because it's otherwise a good puzzle, but becomes frustrating when I'm just taking guesses what the clues mean (although I think I did figure that one out without looking it up). I looked up the skeleton, the stupid monkey puzzle (ugh), and the floppy overwrite. I thiiiiiink that's all I had to look up but there may have been more. After an hour of running in circles, I just want to progress.
Horror has definitely been making waves again lately, especially in the indie scene as well as the modding. I'd reccomend looking at Daymare 1998 if you haven't yet as well as the overhaul mod for RE3 (Lord of Necropolis)
Tormented Souls is one of my fav horror games of all time. Like a mix of SH and RE1make in terms of level design. Ammo conservation is sooooo important they barely give you any and health is in short supply too. And the story is really well written and i love the metroidvania style of it. The atmosphere is amazing and looks great for an indie title. Glad to see the game get so much love. Great to speedrun as well. Gotta say tho i always love reading notes in horror games. Never gets old for me
I did the same exact thing with the clock puzzle. Exactly the same. Same entry. I even got it into my head that it might be the twins birthday because we were given that time at the beginning of the same. The other issue with that puzzle is that the paintings didnt seem important. There are tons of paintings in the game where the MC just blandly comments on them when you click on them. And they even zoom in on them. I didnt think this was any different. I didnt realize they had glowing weapons because im just reading a subtitle. I also just gave up and looked. I will say the number key door gave me a happy feeling when i figured it out. I literally dropped what i was doing in another section when the answer dawned on me and ran to that door. With that being said, I dont know many people who think a circle has infinite "sides"
@underthemayo I'm not sure if you looked at the gameplay footage for the sequel, but it looks like they are really leaning into true fixed camera angles in this one with less of the tracking cameras. Big fan of that change. I only hope they understand that those fixed angles are more than just to look cool or hide enemies. You use them to highlight important things like their puzzles. I remember getting the hammer, which i figured was for the door in the nightmare maternity ward, and the scroll, which I had no idea where that was used but thought there was a statue that should hold it. I had to look up where the scroll went because I missed the Monkey Court puzzle. It was in a dark room with a tracking camera on something that is supposed to be a podium, apparently. The worst part is that the puzzle itself is on the other side of it, facing away from the camera. So I missed it and spent 15 mins running around.
Very underrated channel. Very cohesive and well structured reviews. Very well justified opinions that connect with the majority of the OG fanbase. Even the RE3 and God of War reviews. Actually... especially these two.
I love love loved the atmosphere, music and overall sense of dread and mystery behind this game. I just wish that the story was better. It was dumb. The combat could use some tweeks as well.
In my first playthrough, I didn't have my system connected to an internet source, so I couldn't get any game updates. Apparently, there was a day one patch/update that changed a lot of things including some camera angles, entire room layouts, and certain puzzles. The TV puzzle was one of the changed puzzles, and not only did the non updated version make no sense to me, but any online help was explaining it based on the updated version so I had to just fumble my way through.
@@underthemayo The real fun part was realizing you could skip the final boss. Before the update the door after the final save would drop you in the middle of the stairs heading to the final boss (instead of the top), and for some reason if you went up the stairs instead of down and entered the door back to the save room, you would instead exit outside the elevator you take after the final boss. And since you get the front door key just BEFORE the final boss you can just walk out, and the game counts it.
I've never even played an old RE game and those fixed camera angles look fantastic. Then again I've always adapted to games very rapidly, so the controls probably wouldn't bug me. Even motion controls I can always find a way to make work consistantly for me.
The only kinds of "entities" that are "extraterrestrials" would be the "angels" or stars.. every star is the "physical" abode or "body" of an angel. The logic behind the puzzle is solid, match the shape/symbol to the "entity".
Fixed cam angles that exploit basic photography techniques are genius. Seeing the tilted hallways and camera angles in uncanny positions just sets up the perfect atmosphere for a very clunky and claustrophobic feeling. That being said, old techniques work when used correctly and cleverly. Though it would have been more preferable if a better targeting system is used because games like these can be a lot more tactical than they look. My only real gripe is the overdesigned characters especially the playable model, but I guess it's a callback to very particular flavor of Japanese horror classics, so it's fine.
I'm a fan of the fixed camera and tank controls style as well. I appreciated the video you made suggesting Capcom develop a new fixed cam/tank controls Resident Evil.
Omg that clock puzzle! I did a similar thing but I saw the date in the clock and though, oh, that must be related to that calendar I saw right at the beginning of the game, only to spend ages looking for where it was. I actually couldn’t find it and got so sick of looking that I googled it and it said everything is in the room, so I went back and found the forth painting of Christmas Day and felt so stupid 🤦♂️
For some reason, Wizard of Legend popped back into my head. This game though, for sure, is definitely worth a playthrough! The feel of constant uneasiness is off the charts!
The monkey and the door puzzles were a bit ridiculous to me, had to look them up (a lot of logical leaps you have to make to make it make sense). Didn't have a problem though with the floppy disk, infinite room, or clock puzzles.
Yeah. Finally. Very good review. Now I'm going to be someone who tells you to play "Fobia: St Dinfna Hotel". Basically Resident Evil 7, if Resident Evil 7 was a proper Resident Evil game. It's not perfect, but for me so far the best real survival horror game in first person. I suggest you give it a shot if you're itching for more survival horror. 👍
Really funny way I remembered the monkey puzzle with the general evil see no evil speak no evil thing there’s a song I forget which one but Mr. worldwide was singing and he said “I do no evil see no evil speak no evil get it baby” and I was like oh yeah that
mayo you should try killing floor 2. Amazing horde-based shooter specially in coop tho it is also icredible in solo. The mechanics really push you into its systems and it really makes you both think on a trategy and make quick desitions when things get out of control.
the only puzzle i hated was the gas pipes at the end, the layout is intentionally obstructed and there are multiple solutions but only one works that the designer wants
I feel proud that this master piece was developed in my country, Chile ❤. I just hope that, with their success, our government realize that we can also be able to design and produce amazing games (like other gaming desingers big companies), and can commit with founds that can help more developers to be seen and noticed.
11:03 Fun fact, Jesus (if he was a real person) was absolutely not born on December 25th. Nobody knows for certain the exact date of his birth, but we know it wouldn`t have been in winter for multiple reasons and context clues from the Bible. For one it says that shepherds were outdoors tending to their flocks in the fields at night, which wouldn`t have been the case in the harsh winter cold and rain. Also Mary and Joseph were supposedly only traveling because a census had been declared. Which no ruler in their right mind would do during the winter when it would get many people killed along the journey due to weather. Plus there is absolutely no scripture or historical record that ever mentions December 25th. That date came about hundreds of years later and was decreed by Roman Emperor Constantine and was blended in with the holiday of Saturnalia.
You’ve never seen a bee hive honeycomb? Or a picture of one? It’s a hexagon. Also, associating a triangle/pyramid with an Egyptian pharaoh seems perfectly logical to me.
I think the voice acting and faces in the game sound/look really goofy. The female characters look like they are from Frozen with silly facial animations. And the priest character looks like they are made from plastic. The default outfit is horrendous and incongruous and looks like a final fantasy character designer had a midlife crisis. Thankfully a alt costume is available from the start. Otherwise this game is great. I played the demo blind and was blown away by how clever the game was with it's environmental design. The game is actually scary however it does stop being scary after you get used to the enemies and their behavior. Also the map is interesting but not marking completion is sad. The mansion itself is very pretty which is good but it makes the character models look especially out of place. Overall i really liked the game and would highly recommend it if you loved resident evil 1 remake. The camera controls are immaculate and very nice
for the clock puzzle, as an Asian who does not celebrate xmas, i actually have to look it up when is jesus bday. I guess this is a common knowledge for western cultures only.
What's movement like? At some points when your character backs up it looks like tank controls, at others they look agile enough that it's free movement. Is there the option to choose between the two and what do you prefer for this sort of game?
Just beat it loved it. One thing I didn't like though was the design of the characters. They looked too cartoony for a serious horror game. Their design would be better suited to an adventure game. And of course the voice acting and dialog was goofy as well.
I would say that it sounds like the problem with this game's puzzle design is that everyone is going to have gaps in their knowledge, either because of ignorance, forgetfulness or exhaustion. That means that everyone who plays this game is inevitably going to be frustrated by something that is obvious to someone else. I can't call that good design, I'm afraid, even if some of the puzzles are very well designed individually.
I would realy like to hear your thoughts on Daymare 1998 - another RE clone that began as a fan remake of RE2. It's janky but overall pretty good. Combat is its biggest weakness.
For an indie project this a very competently made game, one of the better efforts out there. However, in all honestly it's still not as good to play as even the very first Resident Evil imo. The combat, characters and environments for some reason don't gel with me, I bounced off it, sadly. Excellent camera work though.
Tormented Souls is not a perfect game...but it was still a great experience for me and it nailed the survival horror aspect for the most part...if only it had some of it flaws ironed out (which could have been easily fixed if it had a bigger budget and more experienced people to help out).

I would expect not many
@underthemayo I'm not sure if you looked at the gameplay footage for the sequel, but it looks like they are really leaning into true fixed camera angles in this one with less of the tracking cameras.
Thank you! I like doing these Everyone Told Me To Play videos cause I can just approach it however I want. RE4 review will be much larger I assume.
@@underthemayo keep 'em coming champ.
I love love loved the atmosphere, music and overall sense of dread and mystery behind this game.
I just wish that the story was better. It was dumb. The combat could use some tweeks as well.
This game really scratches that survival horror itch.
Well damn!
14:11 is my favorite puzzle in the whole game.
Loved this game!
A love letter to the old classic survival horrors.
I think with a fixed camera method like this they need to add a hiding mechanic, and leave the mc without a gun. so more like a slasher movie
I love this game. I enjoyed it more than RE Remake and that's no joke.
Mayo, I never told you play Tormented Souls.
Play Darkwood
I have. I mentioned it in my survival horror video from January last year. Not doing a full video though.
Great video!
There's also an upcoming survival-horror game called "Echoes of the Living" if you're interested :)
I like the environments, music and enemies in this game but i hate the puzzles
I finished this game with my sister last Christmas and we had a blast. Absolutely recommended.
I have always liked the journal reading, maybe im just old fashioned
Slide puzzles are just not fun... Opinion obvs, but damn i dont know anyone that needs a good ol slide puzzle to sleep at night.
Wish they released a costume pack and gun skins - amazing game
Take a shot every time he says “puzzles”
the only puzzle i hated was the gas pipes at the end, the layout is intentionally obstructed and there are multiple solutions but only one works that the designer wants
By the way, been watching Deadwood based on your recommendation and really enjoying it.
Love the video and the channel as always. We gotta get UtM into a gauntlet of slide puzzles.
My one gripe is the lack of replayability, no new game plus. NG+ should be a must for ANY survival horror title.
One of the best horror games I’ve played recently
Really wanted to play this. Went for daymare instead
I feel proud that this master piece was developed in my country, Chile ❤. I just hope that, with their success, our government realize that we can also be able to design and produce amazing games (like other gaming desingers big companies), and can commit with founds that can help more developers to be seen and noticed.
Tormented Souls has excellent tank controls and fixed cameras
Do you think the less than stellar voice performance was also meant to be a homage to the old Resi games?
I feel like it was not. I think it's just bad casting.
@@underthemayotaking into consideration that the actress wasn't an English native... I think she did an amazing job nonetheless
That alien puzzle was so easy omg 😭👌
My favorite puzzle was the television.
13:15 stupidest section of the video. I can tolerate nitpicking from you (within reason) but this puzzle was fairly simple. you're overthinking it
How. The absolute FUCK. Did I never hear of this.
This is a GREAT game! Definitely picking this game up physically.
Hello Mayo, Between Alisa, Signalis, and Tormented Souls, how are you going to rank it from 1 to 3?
(sry bad english)
Signalis is way in the lead at number 1. Tormented Souls would be second and Alisa third.
Great! thanks for the answer. I just started my first playthrough of Alisa rn and so far it's pretty good.
Yeah I didn't want to get into all the pagan holiday history and christianity taking them. That's just not a topic for this video. But yes.
You’ve never seen a bee hive honeycomb? Or a picture of one? It’s a hexagon. Also, associating a triangle/pyramid with an Egyptian pharaoh seems perfectly logical to me.
Not by the logic of "humans live on the earth". Pharaohs don't live in pyramids. Like I said, I like the idea. I just thing the logic is flawed.
You can actually choose between using the joystick to free move & the D-pad for tank controls
I don't even have nostalgia or anything. I actually just prefer this style.
Tormented Souls is awesome but it is piss easy. It needs a higher difficulty for sure
Okay, now everyone (i) is (am) telling you to play the fortune's run demo.
I would realy like to hear your thoughts on Daymare 1998 - another RE clone that began as a fan remake of RE2. It's janky but overall pretty good. Combat is its biggest weakness.
I would love to see under the Mayo review and play this game
The reload Mechanix kills it
@@Jose-se9pu their is an option to turn off plus its supposed to be realistic in a way. Anyone who owns a firearms has only so many magazines on them.
@@BTLAGSI mean yeah, but you’re also shooting zombies in an apocalypse. Realism is on erging but the collecting of mags got tedious. I turned it off
@@Budd631 exactly I agree
For an indie project this a very competently made game, one of the better efforts out there. However, in all honestly it's still not as good to play as even the very first Resident Evil imo. The combat, characters and environments for some reason don't gel with me, I bounced off it, sadly. Excellent camera work though.
Bc this is not a resident evil game. It was inspired by it tho, but that's all.
Tormented Souls is not a perfect game...but it was still a great experience for me and it nailed the survival horror aspect for the most part...if only it had some of it flaws ironed out (which could have been easily fixed if it had a bigger budget and more experienced people to help out).
Just bought this last week, sick game!
Sorry to be that person but where's the link to your playlist? You said at the end of the vid we'd find it in the pinned comment.
For upcoming games Echoes of the Living looks even more classic RE, and Tormented Souls is getting a sequel, so...
Exciting!
2nd best survival horror game ever, Resident Evil being the best.
Have you played nun massacre?
I tried playing it twice but my game kept crashing at this same spot and was like 20 minutes after a save space so I never finished it due to that.
I absolutely loved your signalis video mayo ❤️
Can anyone tell me whats the theme in the beginning of this video ?
