- Lost Cove was settled by Morgan Bailey shortly before the Civil War. The town prospered during the lumber era as a railroad stop by the Nolichucky River and at its peak had over 100 residents. Several factors led to its decline and final abandonement in 1957. As the railroad began to focus more on coal instead of timber as it began to diminish after the logging ceased and with the end of prohibition, moonshining wasn't as prosperous, the economic downturn and remoteness was the eventual cause of the town becoming abandoned.
What a cool place! I'll have to check this hike out.
It is worth a visit.
This is really cool 🌾💛
been there many times. the long way
Good video bro, loved how you gave great detail. I do have a question, me and a few friends us going up there this Saturday but they want to take the tracks. How fast is the train and how often does it goe by? Hope you get back to me on this
Well since I've only been there once I couldn't really give you an honest answer on that. When I was there I went by way of the forest road. Thanks for the comment. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Man that was quite impressive! A few places I get to have settlement with histories and such, but that is in far better shape than those I get to. Now, I'm wanting to explore again. maybe I'll make that 6 hour drive this fall or early next spring. Thanks much for showing us around! Again, that was pretty awesome
Oh yeah, you have to check this place out man! It would be worth the drive time, it's quite impressive.
Love it!
I rafted the Nolichucky but have never hiked lost cove. Hopefully you carry a handgun with you, there’s plenty of bears.
I am prepared for the possibility of a bear encounter, however my experiences with them have shown me that they are usually more afraid of you than you are of them.
