E46 Double Vanos Seals DIY and Impressions

  • Well, I finally did it. I hope you find this "mostly helpful" DIY, uh, helpful. This is only the "seals" fix and not the common "rattle." It's very long and not entertaining. Apologies in advance. Skip to the end to see my on-the-road impressions. Again, do your research don't rely only on one DIY for a job as detailed as this.
    I got my seals from here: www.beisansystems.com/

    I haven't watched the whole video yet, but I can defo say this maintanace task is 110% worth it. As far as I know, all dual vanos on all e46 use the same seals. I didn't leave my engine in time whilst I did it but it worked out brilliantly.

    Cool to know that it beefs up the low end torque! I have been thinking for quite a while now that to "soft" low end was normal. I had also convinced myself that if it needed fixing it would be setting engine codes, which appears not to be the case. I'm doing mine in the next few days.

    By the way, since I have my Carly Scanner, I constantly measure the trims values (STFT/LTFT) with and without CAI... I suggest do it too.

    Your review at the end was very helpful. Our 1st BMW is a used 2004 (150K) E46 sedan. . interior & exterior cream puff .. but we felt it a little under powered, especially in teh low ranges. Many tell us we need the official Siemens MAF .. (not an import) to correct that. But when we recently picked up the same model in a 2 door, the engine was much stronger in the 2500 RPM range (as you mentioned). So I think we'll try the Vanos rebuild.. Not sure i need the needles either. Some say yes some say no. .. What is your opinion?

    P0369 B keeps coming back, there is correct voltage at the plug, tried out few different sensors (for sure a working one from another E46) can these seals cause the p0369 to come back? Thanks. 160k miles on the car.

    cant wait to do this on my zhp, the rattle is bad but some more low end torque would be nice too. I also considered dr. vanos but it sounds like diying for the rattle is really the best way to do it since each car has a different amount of play in it.

    • @hagrdan
      @hagrdan 6 років тому

      my 2003 zhp was horrible before this fix. 130k miles. i think it's much more sensitive to the seal hardening/wear. the original seals were very loose in the cylinders. I also replaced bearings and sanded the rings to have a little preload (~3 ft-lbs torque required to turn them; they will loosen up). Unfortunately I still have a little rattle on cold startup but no rattle while driving anymore. the car really feels young again, very happy I did this. To compare, I did my s52 at 150k and original seals were still snug; I saw no difference in driving.

    Hello. Really nice video!
    Just a question, Is any special tool needed to proper replace vanos piston seals? What I mean is, isn't possile to interfer with the correct valve timing using regular tools?
    Thank you very much!

  • @msubtech84

    Did you throw the VANOS piston housing caps (or whatever they are called) back on without gaskets?

  • @OKay-gv9cg
    @OKay-gv9cg 3 роки тому

    I'm not a professional mechanic, however I'm pretty sure there are gaskets under both piston covers.. In addition to the gasket that runs along the bottom "half" (side closest to the bolts). I've also heard all gaskets should be replaced, ideally, any time the torque of a seal changes, although may not be necessary EVERY time.. I appreciate correction of any errors, I would hate to pass on bad info. Great video overall, cheers.

    Called it, next you'll need to do the CCV. My CCV didn't work at all so the engine wasn't getting vacuum. Got alot more top end HP back after I got a new CCV. Also my brake pedal became much more stiff because of the vacuum.
