I just wanted to say, huge shout out to tppo. If you can't tell, I was highly inspired by his videos, and he was the reason I wanted to make long-form videos again. As this is my first real go at long-form videos, please let me know what you think! Feedback is much appreciated 👍

I know tppo! I'm subscribed to them, and I think they're videos are very informative.
For me, my method to retaining artist studies is I trace the piece beforehand, and use the traced version as my reference. And immediately after, I open a reference window & apply what I learned by sketching it out, if that makes sense. :3
I started studying that way when I began watching mikeymegamega's how to draw anime videos. And it greatly helps! 💜 I don't know why I didn't do that before.

It may be difficult to find her art now, but I'm sure there is at least fb group with backup of most of her drawings. Honestly I've been a fan of her style since 2007 when I first discoveres it and haven't found any artist with similar style till this day. Would be fantastic to see your analysis on her style ❤

Also, little tip for micron-type pens: they give a very consistent line when you hold them upright (almost vertically). Not very comfortable, but that's how they work. Although I do agree that the Uni Pin pens are even less fun to work with in that regard. I also found them to feel unpleasant going over the paper as compared to my old micron pens. Once mine run out, I'll definitely buy a different brand.

I can’t go through all the comments to see if someone else already said this, but when you select the halftone filter there’s a little arrow at the top of the canvas when you select the halftone filter, then you can select “brush” from the arrow that appears instead of the default of applying it to the whole layer. This lets you control where it goes cause you can just apply it with the brush and adjust the settings as normal

there is actually a way I’ve discovered in procreate to make using halftones a little easier! When you go into the halftone filter, i know it seems that it’s all or nothing but that’s because it’s on the layer setting. Clicking where it says “halftone” with the % next to it allows you to switch it to pencil mode, which will only apply the halftones where you select on that layer. In my experience, if the halftones are black compared to the actual color you were adding halftones to, i alpha lock the layer and then tap it again and use fill layer with the original color. Hopefully this is helpful!

Great video! However I think there is some merit to actually studying facial structure and how light is casted onto objects. For instance, the addition of orange throughout the portrait may seem random, but it is actually the glow from the skin reflecting onto the shadows. Sam just likes golden hour lighting. Also, I think u should make the lineart lighter and thinner, only using it as a guide while using colors to accentuate features. It would make it look cleaner, and be careful not to blur dark/purply shadows, and make sure to use them seldomly unless a close object is blocking light on the subject. Dont forget to flip the canvas too! And try to use warp before u render, but you could always fix the lines messed up by it at any time. :)

I keep telling myself I will start colouring, but no, I am too scared to, haha. I will just stick to sketches, I am proud of them.

I'm really impressed, dude. You broke down his style really well and then replicated it using what you observed and it came out really, REALLY close. Geez.

It would be great to see you breakdown the arcane artstyle. Ive never seen anyone do it right.

you legit captured the artist artstyle in a fair way. it looks so much better then the ones that straight up copies sams art and calls it "art study" with no credit
