- This video is from halftime of a Monday Night Football game between the San Francisco 49ers and the visiting Denver Broncos on December 15, 1997. The 49ers retired quarterback Joe Montana's number during the game. Also seen is wide receiver Jerry Rice, who suffered a severe injury earlier in the season but returned for this game. www.pro-footbal...
My belief is Joe Montana is the greatest quarter back of all time he won four super bowls in eight years and three time mvp and no controversies or scandals he is really a true role model and he is simply the best thank you Joe Montana for all those great years I do miss you Joe cool Montana.
Agreed his leagacy is not tainted like bradys
Undefeated in Superbowl, highest passer rating in big game, no interceptions in the big game, and no kicker to win the Superbowl!
Andrew Martinez exactly. Joe Montana didn’t throw a single pick in any playoff game he competed in
@@johnallen4127 brady has a tainted legacy? really? because of "deflate gate"? when the steelers got "busted" for the same thing why didnt the NFL punish them? because they knew it was B.S...and that game was like 34-10...then they went on to beat the "greatest defense since the 85' bears".....and won...Brady is the G.O.A.T...without all the big talking garbage on other teams...when Brady had 4 i would say Joe was number 1...but after the super bowl against the Falcons. there is NO doubt now. And he is still better than half the Q.B's in the league..playing with different personnel AND in harsh new england weather..ALL respect due to the 49'ers of that era because they did it with class and for the most part were very similar in their approach..no b.s no trash talk etc...
@@andrewmartinez9992 who care what the score is? does it need to be a blowout? Brady is 6-3 in the big game, has the greatest comeback in superbowl history,..in 2 of those losses he played hurt.
A great speech from Joe Cool...the GOAT. RIP Coach Walsh.. You made great picks for the 49er team.!!
The most classy athlete of all time
Joe and Jerry showed why the niners were so great back then. Jerry looked like he was a proud brother in this video
So proud to say my sister got me a Joe Montana jersey not too long ago, I know i never got to see him play I was born in 92, but Joe Montana has always been my favourite. He is a legend, 49er faithful. The GOAT!
I also have Joe's Jersey! I was in High School when Joe was at Notre Dame. 3 rd string Quarter Back. I have been 49er's fan since the 60's. I watched Joe tear the NFL up. Check out his highlights on You tube. It is Amazing! Never be another Joe Montana. The 49er's are doing great now too. Hope they win another Superbowl in 2019. Shawn
Joe will always be the greatest. He brought excitement and energy to a team that was flat out lousy when he first came to the Niners. After sitting behind Steve DeBerg for a couple seasons, coach Walsh finally put him and with a great draft class and some key signings, the Niners were off and running. He never cheated, his coach never cheated, his teams never cheated, and he never LOST a Superbowl.
Joe was magical.
I'm so glad to be a 49ers fan since the mid 80s greatest QB no questions asked Joe Montana#16 the 🐐
JOE MONTANA=NFL in the 80'.....
the greatest QB in the history!!!
Victov Yzerman big boiii facts
so sad how 28-3 happened around the time of the comment and Montana is still better
You can see the love in Mr. D's eyes...best owner ever...no one ever did more for his players than that man
Then why did he ok the trade? I loved little Eddie until he betrayed Joe.
@@thomasoaxaca9771 Watch the Montana doc on peacock, they tell you in their own words.
@@R2B2YT I have seennit before when Mr.D told Joe that he could start and have anything he wanted if he didn't go to KC.
The point is that he approved it in the first place and then had seller's remorse afterward.
Am I mistaken?
@@thomasoaxaca9771 yes. I think too that Mr. D delegated leadership. George was the coach so he let him coach. Same with Bill. I see your point of view tho with Mr. D. For me ultimately this is Bill Walsh's ultimate blunder. As genius as he was, the plan to pit the two against each other backfired on many occasions. Ultimately it brought much lifelong anguish and heartache to both Steve and Joe. Watching that doc definitely opened up an old wound for me. Joe was my guy, I felt so betrayed as a fan, cant imagine how he felt.
@@R2B2YT Thanks.
I too felt betrayed. The guy won 4 super bowls for you and he didn't get to retire as a 49er.
I would have signed Joe for 1 day when he left the chiefs and let him retire.
Oh, do I have a story to share with you.
I ran.into Joe. Literally ran into him. Where I live is only a 2 hour drive to the coast. There is a little town just south of Monterey, California. It is named Carmel. It is famous because Clint Eastwood was mayor. It is also 2 hours south of San Francisco. One Sunday, I decided to go for a drive. It was a beautiful day and my girlfriend was out of town. And I drive a Porsche. So I was driving along with the sunroof open listening to some tunes and I get to Carmel.
The arch enemy of Posche owners is 1. Ferrari. 2. Corvette. So I didn't am looking for a parking space and I see this one on the other side. In order to get there I had to go around 2 blocks. Carmel has a lot of one way streets. I get there only to find a Ferrari had beat me to it. So I park somewhere else and go walking/shopping. As I come to an intersection this guy runs right into me. What a jackass (I was going to say). It was Joe and Jennifer.
I didn't say anything except it's all right. I didn't want to sound like a groupie. I watched them walk away as they got into the FERRARI!
God has blessed me with some cool meetings.
O.J.Simpson was with Nicole and another gal in San Fransisco. We were all in this expensive ladies boutique that belings to some friends of mine. My wife comes out of the dressing room with this real sexy skirt and top. Simpson was there with a girl in each arm. My wife asks me how the outfit looked. Simpson was staring at her ass and he goes "looks fine from here". Guy is a pig.
I met Muhammad Ali when he was at Harvard Square Theater signing his book The Greatest. I was a freshman at Harvard then. His bodyguards were huge and I mean huge. Like 6'8" or so. Got to shake his hand too. Guy had class. Real class.
Made me tear up man. I remember watching this live, so epic.
zillabeast in a SF vs Raiders if I recall well
@@eduardoflores8255 what? They played the broncos?
This moment right here still brings some emotions for me. I remember seeing this on TV live. Always Joe Montana one of the greatest alongside Jerry Rice, Bill Walsh and Eddie D!!!!
There's Joe Montana and then everyone else. There will only be One GOAT and that honor goes to Joe Montana.
The GOAT....Simply the Best....saw him play and loved him even though SF was not my home team....he is still missed and no one not even Brady can top him....
Thats didnt age well did it
Brady topped montana when he won his 5th super bowl
🏈Oh gosh...it was hard to watch him retire...In the world of football Joe Montana will be greatly missed...🏈🏆💜🆒
Behold people, the one and only true GOAT Mr. JOE MONTANA... #Faithful
Rhoads Matheson Joe Montana’s not a Cry Baby & a Potty Mouth like Tom Brady is
Rosalee Zephier I 💯% agree, simply the greatest ever!!!
Rhoads Matheson have you seen Tom Brady yelling crying cussing & throwing stuff every time he & his team lost I have that is why I call Tom Bawl Baby & a Potty Mouth because he cries & curses whenever he & his team loses Steve Young & Joe Montana never cried screamed swore & made a big scene
Rosalee Zephier yes I sure have, Tom has always been that way... I saw Steve Young do that one time to George Seifert in a game, but he was just furious that George took him out of the game... But Joe Cool, never!
Rhoads Matheson I was at that game! The Eagles were killing us that day. And Steve had just been thrashed by their pass rush . George Seifert made the right call but Steve had just come off the loss to Joe and KC and he had just lost it when GS did this.
Steve Young has said that he was saying so much shit to GS to goad him into fighting after that on the sideline out of the years of frustration that he had gone through to become the starter.
But it was the other 49er players seeing this unhinged and defiant side of mild mannered Steve Young that it changed their perception of him. He was no longer just the backup but a leader willing to take all the risks the Eagles had to offer because he wanted to win the game and it got the entire team fired up for that crucial win over Detroit. "It taught me an important lesson: Perception is reality." -Steve Young
THE GOAT!!! RIP BILL WALSH...EDDIE "D"
truly, the greatest ever...
The G.O.A.T.
endured the defenses before the salary cap. An easier league now.
good thing he played as a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers.
wouldn't have mattered...he would have lifted any team to be a winner...
Thats the only thing he did wrong, he should of played for a more the syeelers packers or cowboys cause the 49ers betrayed the baddest qb in history, so i hope montana tells the 49ers to go to hll
Jaime Lopez 8t - The niners had the ultimate respect for Joe and traded Joe to the team of his choice. Nothing last forever.
@@jaimelopez8t699 this is business kid
Eddie D one of the great NFL Owners
He is the best all time.
And he needs to be the owner again, his sister and nephew have ruined this team
He took care of his players like they were his kids.
We’ve turned this around. Jed York got his head out of his ass, and is a good owner.
@@Shogun_999
Perhaps my brain isn't working too good. I looked up SB history again and 49ers' last SB victory was 1995 or 1994 season. After Eddie's evil sister and her devil husband sadistically took over the 49ers, about 1/4 century past, they won nothing. They are either completely ignorant about football or they just don't care much about the business of the 49ers.
The best that will ever be.
I was in High School when Golden"Joe" Montana. Was at Notre Dame. I had been a 49'ers fan since I was a kid. When the Niner's picked Joe he was a 3rd string Quarter Back. But, Wow! Joe took the NFL by Storm. I had so much fun watching the Niner's kicking Ass. I wish my friend's from child hood could have been around to be there to watch the football games with me. They liked the Redskins,Dolphins,Vikings and of course America's team. The Cowboy's! But Joe brought fun back to the game. Played like kids play with heart. Thanks Joe! Still have your Signed Jersey. It's one of my most cherished item's.The man with the Golden Arm. Joe Montana! Shawn
The GOAT OF QB'S
Greatest QB ever!
My favorite football player of all time; the great Joe Montana! I love ya Joe! Thank you for all the memories! No one has the quick feet and talent you do. You’re like a basketball player on the football field.
Joe Montana is the best QB ever.
George Vreeland Hill Joe Montana is the GREATEST QB TO EVER TOUCH A FOOTBALL
Montana is the greatest, period. He's less than a god, but more than a man.
Better than Brady!
Without question; if he played under the same rules as Brady, Brees and Manning did/do, his numbers would have been untouchable!
@@zatchHBK85 Brady is a cheater. No respect for that pos

The TRUE GOAT!
Tom Brady may be considered the goat. Joe Montana is THE GOAT.
I wish he was still playing the NFL
Agreed. He would own Tom Brady!
Zachariah Partney funny
Been a Niners fan since 1979 living on Treasure Island Naval housing in San Francisco!!
As a long time 49er fan that night was very tough for me. My uncle was killed in a car accident that day. I was looking forward to watching this game with him. He was a long time 49er fan. Very bittersweet remembering that day. 😢
Sorry for your loss
@@hakeemthedream3298 thank you sir. I appreciate it.
I miss these 49ers games I enjoyed watching the best team ever with the best coach in history
And owner
Gary Phillips who came from the Bengals the west coast offence is really the sixth st. viaduct offence those are Bill Walsh's words not mine the Sixth Street Viaduct is like a highway overpass next to the old Bengals training facility
And Candlestick
If youll are the best team ever, why did sf get whipped twice back to back in dallas and candlestick with your so called greatest wide receiver of all time (j.montanas fav receiver)in the 90s?
❤forever my favorite player
Simply the best- period.
MONTANA THE BEST QUARTERBACK OF ALL TIME. YES.

GOAT
Joe Cool!
I must say that Joe Montana is the greatest NFL player in the history of this game!
HUGE 49ers fan when I was a kids in the late 80’s. Mostly because of #16
GOAT! GOAT! GOAT! GOAT! GOAT! GOAT! GOAT! GOAT! GOAT! GOAT!
Montana at the time was more shocking and that's the bottom line.
want to see shocking? the glare off of Bradys hands from those 6 rings....shocking!!! and he is tough as hell also!
I was at that game! The crowd was so loud! Niners for life!!!
That pass to JT still gives me goosebumps!
Montana and Rice. 2 of the truest G.O.A.T.s of their positions.
Joe Montana
JOE MONTANA HANDS DOWN THE 🐐 AND ONE OF MY FAVORITE QUARTERBACKS OF ALL TIME (16) 🌟🌟🌟🌟☝️
best big game Q B ive seen.
The best career quarterback ive seen is Marino.
Marino was great think he till this day had the best arm ever, not his fault Miami couldn’t assembly a good defense to compliment the offense but,joe and the 49ers where simply perfect man....
49ERS-4-LIFE
Joe Montana the G.O.A.T.
The true GOAT sure miss watching Joe Montana play!
Loved seeing Jerry Rice there and applauding.
Not once did praise himself but others. Thats a sign of a great man.
Bill Walsh is one of the greatest coachs of all time, had he not retire to soon he will won six or seven Superbowls,. and be the greatest coach of all time.
Such an awesome moment in 49er history, you were and will always be the best montana
Well deserved Joe ...thanks, for the timeless sports memories
The GOAT!! And my favorite player ever!
I grew up in Ireland remember this guy Joe Montana of the 49rs and a big guy called the refrigerator i think Chicago they were great times coaches like Tom Coughlan and Ditka
The best qb and coach and receiver. The best time!
Style and graceful my man Joe Montana is the coolest #1 nfl QB ever, he is simply mesmerizing.
Best Ever.
I remember watching this live. Still probably have it on tape somewhere. I thought the Dynasty would never end. Great memories. Also how awesome was the Eddie chant? I remember Dan Dierdoff pointing it out after halftime.
Still take him over Brady any day
Because you're an idiot.
I do remember this game. Kevin Greene sealed it with a Pick-6 late in the 2nd-Half, only to lose Jerry Rice (again!) with another injury, for the remainder of the season.
The best in the world
"Ladies and gentleman"
Daquan B I’m sorry, could you repeat that? ;p
When New England retires #12 they won't be able to do that big jersey reveal because the football balloon will already have been deflated for some reason.
yaaaawwwwnnn..deflate gate? ask pittsburgh about deflated footballs. what a joke....6 rings..6...that is a lot in 18 years.
This Man makes me love the game of Football since I was sixteen in a small town south of Munich!
And I made the best choice of my hero... really knowing for 25 years! „Under pressure He played better“... that‘s my goal since then!
Now: We are „going back to Miami...“
Red and Gold Baby...
Glad he’s on my team.
He is as flawless as a quarterback in a Super Bowl can get.
AKA KREE. YES HE IS THE. GREATEST. QUARTERBACK EVER BLESSINGS
El retiro de número del más grande de todos los tiempos!!!
could have easily had 6 sb
Gary Phillips
It is possible with the 49er's in the 80's and early to mid 90's they could have had 8.
@A Baller I feel that fumble is keeping from the hall of fame
Thats true
brady could EASILY have 8...he played one super bowl against NY with a leg that was worthless..in the other one against the Giants it took a miracle catch to barely win it
@@jeremydesrochers5199 Brady could have cheated his way to 10!! Lol...don't mention his name around here.
That's why he is the best I mean c'mon back surgery and then Superbowl win then injury to his elbow still playing. Give me another quarterback that has done that.
damn wish i could of been at the stick at the time
Still The GOAT In my eyes better than any Quarterback ever that includes Tom Brady. Montana never lost a Super Bowl and never threw a single interception in a Super Bowl. Thats amazing. Plus Joe Montana such a humble man.
Before that Brady, The realy GOAT: Joe Montana.
Man I miss Candlestick.
Super ceremony for a super athlete.
I love him
Joe was the best ever quarterback of all times. I was right that he would be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on his first ballot. He along with Troy Aikman, John Elway, Dan Marino, Steve Young would also go to Canton, Ohio.
Joe Montana o maior QB de todos
Joe = God
Simplemente el mejor !
I tear up every time
Joe Montana the greatest quarterback of all time
Hands the GOAT! He played when the defense could kill the offenses, maul the QB’s, destroy WR’s, smash RB’s...spearing, helmet to helmet, horse collar you name it. I saw Leonard Marshall DE of the Giants hit Joe Montana and everyone thought he was dead. Montana could have played in any era before his time and today he would have 50 SB’s and MVP’s!
the goat 10 championships 4 Super Bowls" when football used to be football not the soft flag football nowadays.. the nation loves you. the greatest to ever play the position God bless!!
GOAT !
Montana was unreal.
Vman i agree with u 110% like i always stated if there was a real life superhero he would wear #16 for my 49ers. Joe Cool: " hey Brady hold my beer let me show u how its done"
Ironic the Attitude Era started
