The "not even an INT" for the super bowl is a notable thing to me as a 49er fan. In the 2012 Super Bowl between the 49ers and Ravens, Colin Kaepernick threw a colossally bad pass that sailed way over Randy Moss, resulting in Ed Reed picking it off. Phil Sims was one of the commentators for the big game and made a devastating comment, something along the lines of: "Kaepernick became the first 49ers quarterback to throw an interception in the super bowl. Montana never threw any in 4 games. Steve Young none. They got championships."

I'm old enough to remember watching Joe play. It was like nothing you can describe. He was so smooth, so accurate and threw such a precise, catchable ball. To me, he's the best ever.
I stopped watching football after he left the sport. No one has done what he accomplished in the same given time frame of ten years. One and only on the summit.
First time I heard of Joe was watching the Clemson-ND game in Death Valley and Joe lead ND to a 4th quarter come from behind win. A stone cold killer on the field.

Joe almost always put the ball in the easiest place for his receiver, while at the same time putting out of reach for defenders. His accuracy was just unreal. He also didn't have Jerry Rice or any real "elite" receivers during his first two super bowl runs.
Joe Montana is my favorite QB of all time. I’ve been a 49er faithful since the 80’s, my children grew up watching 49ers (of course) and are also die-hard 49er fans and now my grandchildren. So being 49er fan in my family goes from generation to generation. It all started with watching Montana those many years ago. Faithful to the bay!! Let’s go Niners!!!!
I will always remember when he made the comeback against Philadelphia. 4 touchdowns in the 4th quarter. I had move to Philadelphia from SF and was hearing slot of scrap but he came back and busted them up!!! Forever the greatest
Similarly the game that cemented Joe as my GOAT was another comeback, this time as a Chief against Buddy Ryan's Oilers in the playoffs. The oilers absolutely dominated the first half making Joe look old and washed up. He came out in the second half and just picked them apart. It was one of the most impressive dismantlings of a good defense I have ever seen
Same. Brady struggles when dealing with defenses pressuring him and got beat twice in the Superbowl in an era that protects both QBs and WRs. Montana in this era would terrorize the NFL like no one has ever seen.

Joe Montana was unfortunate enough to play during the age of the Linebacker/DE where there was little protection for QBs. Boy did he get lit up quite a lot too. Today it is simply not the same. You used to see body bag games where all the quarterbacks were taken out on stretchers from fearsome pass rushers (it was not a completely uncommon occurrence). Now there is simply too much money going around to see franchise quarterbacks get absolutely mauled like they did in the past and the league has shifted from favoring defense to gaudy offensive statistics and higher scores.
Joe is my favourite player of all time. Watching him cut the Dolphins apart in Super Bowl XIX is my favourite memory. But the run in 89 when he dropped 41 on the leagues no.1 Defense in the Vikings. Then 30 on the Rams. Then 55 in the Super Bowl against the no1 Defense in the AFC was magical. Don’t care about “GOATS” Joe is my favourite football player of my lifetime
In an era when Quarterbacks are getting their player's hurt, Jerry Rice said there were a lot of times where I thought I was open and Joe threw the ball to someone else. I was mad until I watched the film and a LB or safety was waiting to light me up.
Joe Montana protected his receivers on the field and his offensive line in public and in the media. You would often see clips of guys like Lynn Swann get knocked out cold making shoe string catches being hung out dry. He once mentioned he was envious of the fact that Montana protected his receivers so well and that he never would’ve needed to make those catches putting his health at risk if he had a guy like Montana as his quarterback. My son once met Lynn at Serra High school when he was a Sophomore (along with Barry Bonds and Tom Brady). They came by to talk to the football team and my son told me this. It was a great compliment for Joe coming from an eventual hall of fame receiver on a completely different Steelers team whose heyday was in the 70s.
I'm forever a huge Montana fan and at 60 so lucky to have seen it directly. But to actually see those stats along with all the memories is just another level upon the foundation of the greatest all around QB. No disrespect to Brady, and I'm born n bred Bostonian, but with all else equal I take Joe over anyone. And naturally who was Brady's idol. 🤨😉 👍

I rooted for Peyton, he was my guy growing up, Pats and now Chiefs. Everyone hates “I’m sick of him/then winning”, what fun is a league without any distinguishing greatness and dynasties? Peyton had 2005, 2009 and 2012, one more ring where he isn’t carries by his defense and I’d give him the GOAT nod when we’re talking 7 all pros and 5 MVPS from 2003-13 while missing an entire season. If it were pre salary cap era or he’d taken Brady like pay cuts history might be different. Too bad his first superbowl win was vs the Bears. Another reason to appreciate Boston sports dominance winning 12 championships and 19 championship trips. I was too young to appreciate the Bulls dynasty, I hate the Whitesox so the Hawks and Cubs are all I have to stand on.

Growing up in the Bay it wasn't until later in life I realized how good he actually was. I would just expect our QB to casually win even in late/impossible situations,and in an era where the position wasn't coddled. Now when I look back I consider myself lucky to have grown up in the Bay and watch every game on local TV
Montana was a great basketball player too. Very athletic. Brady had a good not great arm and the body of a soccer dad. His thing was his football smarts

Rated an average arm but had football instincts and intelligence second to none. I agree if Jerry hadn't sacked Jimmy they probably would have won 1 or 2 more. Its hard to top Brady's record but he played in an era of powder puff football where if anyone even got 5 yards close to him he would cry like a baby for the ref to throw a flag. Yeah when you think of joe you think of perfection like the 1972 miami dolphins, also rocky marciano being undefeated and don larsen perfect game in a world series game. Joe is 4 for 4 in superbowls with 11 touchdown passes 0 interceptions in those 4 games, which is insanity.

The thing about Joe Montana was that, while he was on the field, you never feeled without a chance to win. He made you believe. He had that magic, and that is the rarest of talents. That is why he will forever be considered one of the greatest
I get your point on physicality but Joe was Brady's idol and I think he was the next iteration, took it farther with bigger comebacks than Joe ever managed. I got the same feeling watching the Superbowl where the Pats were down so much as I got watching Joe when I was a kid: "He's gonna do it, no question" and the Niners found a way.
Great video. I was lucky enough to be born into a Northern California family who were die hard 49ers fans. I was also lucky enough to be a 49er fan during the 80s! It was so amazing. I remember never panicking when they were losing with just a couple minutes left. Montana was the 2minute master. He would start throwing 10-15 yard. to John Taylor or Jerry Rice. I remember Jerry dragging the tips of his toes in bounds before going out of bounds. Then the clock would stop after every play !And a lot of the time they weren’t huge plays. I was just a kid, but I remember Montana (or “Big Sky” as my dad referred to him) just eating up the clock w/ these precision plays that 10-15-a twenty here and there. That’s how he would chew away the other teams lead. That being said, he was a master of the clock! What a cool thing to watch him as I grew up. He was so amazing. And he looked so fragile out there!! But he was freaking machine! ThT would be a cool video….. the theme of Montana getting the ball with less than 2 minutes to go. The fat lady was gargling salt water!!

Understand that this video is working with limited time but it’s missing the historical aspects of understanding the dominance of NFC which won every SB from the 1984 through 1996 seasons. The 49ers played VICIOUS NFC defenses & Montana was hurt in massive hits at times. With today’s rules in the 1980’s the 49ers might’ve won 5-8 Super Bowls. Montana NEVER threw an INT in a Super Bowl. 2 strike seasons marred the 1980s. Joe Cool was the first Tom Brady even though they ran different offenses. Montana was an assassin w/ice in his veins.
Man, stop with the “he played in the stronger NFC” business. He also played in what was arguably the weakest division in the NFL. Folks back then tried to do the opposite you are doing and degrade him for that. None of that matters. Like the players themselves say, you play the teams on the schedule. That’s that. @@williamwarner9829 Watch him getting hit by Jim Burt in 1986, then remember the 1985 Bears who went 15-1, add in TWO strike seasons & then watch Joe get hit playing the 1990 Giants in the NFC CG. The AFC teams got BLOWN OUT for over a decade. The real Super Bowl was the NFC CG in those years (1984-1996). Montana getting to & winning 4 SBs is amazing for the 1980s. I still have great respect for other QBs like Elway, Kelly, & Marino. They got hit just as hard. The Bills were 4 wins away from being the greatest team ever. Joe Cool just had a way about him that I always admired. He’s one of the greatest at getting it done when it mattered most.

The point I made was that people should stop trying to degrade players or teams because they played in a weak division or conference. They all had to play all the teams eventually over that span (as they do today) and literally none of them were or are safe from the hardest players out there. The great players and teams aren’t defined by the strength or weakness of the teams they play, they are defined by what they do on the field no matter who they are playing against. We all know how great Joe was. Especially those of us who were alive to watch him. Folks need to stop trying to falsely mystify the road he took there.

The thing is he had bad games, 0 TDs and 3 INTs type games, but he had some insanely impressive games, superman efficiency, and he's 4-0 with no turnovers in Super Bowls. Joe Montana was a special player. The only thing missing is more Super Bowl rings which he would have got if he stayed healthy and played longer.

Clemson hosted Notre Dame in 1977, pitting two future NFL QBs against each other - Steve Fuller and Joe Montana. I marched in Tiger Band and the stadium secretly engaged in a Quiet Out before the game because of coach Dan Devine writing the ACC that week griping about crowd noise - and the stadium went from dead quiet to EXPLOSION on the pedal note of Tiger Rag. Despite valiant Clemson efforts, Montana prevailed in the fourth quarter. My favorite college band memory.
For me, he is the GOAT. If I had to pick between him and Brady to win a game, I wouldn’t hesitate to choose Joe. I don’t question how good Brady was and I bear in mind this is a team sport, BUT nobody talks about Vinatieri when the GOAT discussions pop. Joe led his teams to comebacks or blowouts against two historic QBs. He’s the finisher by definition, pure Joe, no kicker needed
I've been a lifetime KC Chiefs fan but always enjoyed watching Joe Montana play with the 49ers, he always did amazing things on the field and is definitely one of the greatest QBs ever.
people today don’t realize that the FIRST two Superbowl wins by Joe were WITHOUT the great Jerry Rice. and it could be argued that Joe’s stats actually improved when Jerry Rice joined the team. but then Jerry also benefited from having two of the greatest 49er QBs ever.

Once he joined KC and took them far, he shut down all speculation that he was a system QB. He WAS what made the system work.Just ask Jerry Rice and the other 49ers on offense.
QB's today would never have lasted as long as they have if they played in Joe's time. Their position is extremely protected nowadays! In Joe's daze of playing, the QB was a regular player when it came to tackling and hitting. They took a sheer beating game after game!
Hate when people compare Brady and Montana to see who was better. Two different QBs from two completely different eras. Montana played at a time when you could hit QBs as hard as you wanted to. They were no more protected than a running back. He also didn't play as long as Brady. Not gonna knock on Brady's accomplishments, he did what he did because he's a good QB plain and simple. But he's not Montana, and Montana isn't Brady.
By 1986 some were starting to say his best days had passed. He had by then 2 SB rings and MVP's with them, so a damn good career to reflect on many thought. In '86 he had surgery on his back and some thought he'd never play again. He comes back mid-season, gets Frisco in the playoffs, and then just gets plastered on the Giants Stadium turf. Now Young is brought to Frisco because that may be it for Joe. But SB's in '88 and '89 and a great '90 season. But then comes more playoff pain courtesy of the Giants, Joe gets laid out again. He's out for almost 2 years, comes back, becomes a Cheif and 2 more postseason appearances with them. When he retired in '95 it was generally accepted that he was in fact the most prolific QB the NFL ever had.

From the games I watched, he was a master at looking off defenders and going the other way. And it helped that he had receivers with excellent hands, and a decent running game to boot.

He is tied with Terry Bradshaw for 4-0 in the SB and Bradshaw did it before Joe did. Terry did it in an era that was even meaner than the one Joe was in and he did it in 6 years exactly like Joe would follow. So really Bradshaw is the OG GOAT who was followed by Joe and those 2 are tied at the same exact level while Brady is 7-10 in the SB and with a full 3 more SBs and not to mention 6 more appearances than the other 2 GOATS that defaults Brady to the one true GOAT. But don't forget Bradshaw, he did it before Joe or Brady and he did it exactly like Joe and Joe is tied with him but Terry is the OG. And there were less teams then which means that you had to play the same teams more often and it was a lot tougher to win due to that. That era was extremely brutal even more so than Joe's era.

Joe Montana is the best all around QB of all time. He was 4-0 in the SB, zero interceptions, and on 3rd and 8 he’d run for the 1st down if no one was open. He had it all.
I appreciate "grace" in athletics. It's why I enjoyed watching Ted Williams and Will Clark's batting strokes, Klay Thompson's shooting stroke and Muhammed Ali in his prime. Joe was the epitome of grace at QB. Watch some of his videos. It's poetry in motion.
My greatest Montana memory was a Monday night football game against the Rams. The 49ers blew it in the first quarter, and the Rams took an early and really big lead. Over the course of the game, the 49ers whittled them down. John Taylor had to 90+ yard touchdowns in that same game.
Quarterbacks of yesteryear were a different breed. They played with very little protection from "roughing". These dudes would get lit up every single time.
The game that changed the fate of two franchises. Dallas lost 3 consecutive NFC title games and slowly deteriorated. The 49ers went on to win 4 Super Bowls in the 80s.
I’m glad many people in the comments understand how different the nfl is today from back in the day. It was much more physical. Hits today that are illegal were all legal & fair game. There was no targeting or other rules etc
What isn't mentioned about the Notre Dame win over Houston - I believe the narrator says that Notre Dame came from behind to win 35-34, but that doesn't begin to tell the real story. I believe at one point Houston was ahead 34-12 but then Montana led Notre Dame on a 22-0 run to pull off a miracle win!
People forget that he also had big fourth quarter comebacks against Pittsburgh (trailed 17-7, won 26-17) and Southern California (trailed 24-6, brought them to a 25-24 lead before losing on a last second field goal). He has established himself as a comeback QB long before the Cotton Bowl.
For me, Joe Montana's SB success is like Madison Bumgarner's World Series success. Yeah, Bum lost a division series game, but when it came to the World Series, the point where it matters most, he was cool, dominant, and the best who ever played. Same attributes go to Joe Cool.

As a Giants fan who grew up in the 80's, Montana (and Rice) were absolutely scary--he could surgically cut through your defense at any time, and he could really take a hit. After seeing the Leonard Marshall hit live, I never expected Joe to get up, or even move, but he did--one tough SOB! Joe is a titanium tumbler compared to the over-priced china QB's today.

Acouple things that need to be said, he was also a very elusive running QB, he could shred a defense with his feet. Also, he had an intangible team leader component that is hard to put in words. He had a genius coach in Bill Walsh as well.
Joe did this in a time when "protecting the QB rules" were a joke if they existed at all. Some of the greatest defensive hits/plays from back then would be ejections and finds today. He would have a lot more rings if he wasn't clobbered from the blindside in a hit that today would be illegal. If you had to win a game, life on the line, you choose Montana.
Joe Montana was the Steve McQueen of the NFL. He was Joe Cool! He was also a modest QB, who attributed his success to his receivers, ie Jerry Rice that helped him look good. Just after Desert Storm I sent Joe a patch I had worn, along with a card & self addressed envelope. About 6 months later I received the card in the mail, post marked San Francisico. It was signed in a blue ballpoint pin, but I didn’t care. I did get a chance to see the 49ers vs Saints at a Monday Night game, 1995 (?) in N.O. Joe didn’t play, but Steve Young put on a clinic. Joe is still one of the best QB’s ever.
An important thing for people now too young to have witnessed Joe Montana playing the quarterback position in real-time and not in retrospect decades later now that a few generations of players have metriculated in and out of the League since when he retired, when assessing his G.O.A.T. status against Tom Brady (who, incidentally grew up in California and was a die-hard '49ers fan and idolized Montana), is that he accumulated his completion, yardage and touchdown stats all during an era when defenses were allowed to play a lot rougher against QBs and their receivers than they are these days.
You forgot one very important stat by Joe Montana. He never threw an interception in a Superbowl and never lost a Superbowl.

First time I heard of Joe was watching the Clemson-ND game in Death Valley and Joe lead ND to a 4th quarter come from behind win. A stone cold killer on the field.

Joe almost always put the ball in the easiest place for his receiver, while at the same time putting out of reach for defenders. His accuracy was just unreal. He also didn't have Jerry Rice or any real "elite" receivers during his first two super bowl runs.

Joe Montana is my favorite QB of all time. I’ve been a 49er faithful since the 80’s, my children grew up watching 49ers (of course) and are also die-hard 49er fans and now my grandchildren. Similarly the game that cemented Joe as my GOAT was another comeback, this time as a Chief against Buddy Ryan's Oilers in the playoffs. The oilers absolutely dominated the first half making Joe look old and washed up. He came out in the second half and just picked them apart. It was one of the most impressive dismantlings of a good defense I have ever seen

Joe Montana was unfortunate enough to play during the age of the Linebacker/DE where there was little protection for QBs. Boy did he get lit up quite a lot too. Today it is simply not the same. You used to see body bag games where all the quarterbacks were taken out on stretchers from fearsome pass rushers (it was not a completely uncommon occurrence).
Now there is simply too much money going around to see franchise quarterbacks get absolutely mauled like they did in the past and the league has shifted from favoring defense to gaudy offensive statistics and higher scores.
Joe is my favourite player of all time. Watching him cut the Dolphins apart in Super Bowl XIX is my favourite memory. But the run in 89 when he dropped 41 on the leagues no.1 Defense in the Vikings. Then 30 on the Rams. Then 55 in the Super Bowl against the no1 Defense in the AFC was magical. Don’t care about “GOATS” Joe is my favourite football player of my lifetime

Joe Montana protected his receivers on the field and his offensive line in public and in the media. You would often see clips of guys like Lynn Swann get knocked out cold making shoe string catches being hung out dry. He once mentioned he was envious of the fact that Montana protected his receivers so well and that he never would’ve needed to make those catches putting his health at risk if he had a guy like Montana as his quarterback. My son once met Lynn at Serra High school when he was a Sophomore (along with Barry Bonds and Tom Brady). They came by to talk to the football team and my son told me this. It was a great compliment for Joe coming from an eventual hall of fame receiver on a completely different Steelers team whose heyday was in the 70s.

I'm forever a huge Montana fan and at 60 so lucky to have seen it directly. But to actually see those stats along with all the memories is just another level upon the foundation of the greatest all around QB. Growing up in the Bay it wasn't until later in life I realized how good he actually was. I would just expect our QB to casually win even in late/impossible situations,and in an era where the position wasn't coddled. Now when I look back I consider myself lucky to have grown up in the Bay and watch every game on local TV

I agree if Jerry hadn't sacked Jimmy they probably would have won 1 or 2 more. Great video. I was lucky enough to be born into a Northern California family who were die hard 49ers fans. I was also lucky enough to be a 49er fan during the 80s! It was so amazing. I remember never panicking when they were losing with just a couple minutes left. Montana was the 2minute master. He would start throwing 10-15 yard. to John Taylor or Jerry Rice. I remember Jerry dragging the tips of his toes in bounds before going out of bounds. Then the clock would stop after every play !And a lot of the time they weren’t huge plays. I was just a kid, but I remember Montana (or “Big Sky” as my dad referred to him) just eating up the clock w/ these precision plays that 10-15-a twenty here and there. That’s how he would chew away the other teams lead.
That being said, he was a master of the clock! What a cool thing to watch him as I grew up.
He was so amazing. And he looked so fragile out there!!

Understand that this video is working with limited time but it’s missing the historical aspects of understanding the dominance of NFC which won every SB from the 1984 through 1996 seasons. The 49ers played VICIOUS NFC defenses & Montana was hurt in massive hits at times. With today’s rules in the 1980’s the 49ers might’ve won 5-8 Super Bowls. Montana NEVER threw an INT in a Super Bowl. 2 strike seasons marred the 1980s. Joe Cool was the first Tom Brady even though they ran different offenses. Montana was an assassin w/ice in his veins.

Man, stop with the “he played in the stronger NFC” business. He also played in what was arguably the weakest division in the NFL. Folks back then tried to do the opposite you are doing and degrade him for that.
None of that matters. Like the players themselves say, you play the teams on the schedule. That’s that. They don’t control what teams they play or when. They still have to perform.

The AFC teams got BLOWN OUT for over a decade. The real Super Bowl was the NFC CG in those years (1984-1996). Montana getting to & winning 4 SBs is amazing for the 1980s. I still have great respect for other QBs like Elway, Kelly, & Marino. They got hit just as hard. The Bills were 4 wins away from being the greatest team ever. Joe Cool just had a way about him that I always admired. He’s one of the greatest at getting it done when it mattered most.

The point I made was that people should stop trying to degrade players or teams because they played in a weak division or conference. They all had to play all the teams eventually over that span (as they do today) and literally none of them were or are safe from the hardest players out there.
The great players and teams aren’t defined by the strength or weakness of the teams they play, they are defined by what they do on the field no matter who they are playing against.
We all know how great Joe was. Especially those of us who were alive to watch him. Folks need to stop trying to falsely mystify the road he took there.

It could be a generational thing, But Joe Montana will likely always be my favorite quarterback of all time.
The thing is he had bad games, 0 TDs and 3 INTs type games, but he had some insanely impressive games, superman efficiency, and he's 4-0 with no turnovers in Super Bowls. Joe Montana was a special player. The only thing missing is more Super Bowl rings which he would have got if he stayed healthy and played longer.

Clemson hosted Notre Dame in 1977, pitting two future NFL QBs against each other - Steve Fuller and Joe Montana. I marched in Tiger Band and the stadium secretly engaged in a Quiet Out before the game because of coach Dan Devine writing the ACC that week griping about crowd noise - and the stadium went from dead quiet to EXPLOSION on the pedal note of Tiger Rag. Despite valiant Clemson efforts, Montana prevailed in the fourth quarter.

This is why I was a niner fan in the 80s once he left I became a cowboy fan after losing in the playoffs since 1996 I am going back to my old team
QB's today would never have lasted as long as they have if they played in Joe's time. Their position is extremely protected nowadays! In Joe's daze of playing, the QB was a regular player when it came to tackling and hitting. They took a sheer beating game after game!

They were no more protected than a running back. He also didn't play as long as Brady. Not gonna knock on Brady's accomplishments, he did what he did because he's a good QB plain and simple. But he's not Montana, and Montana isn't Brady.

There’s something you forgotten about Joe. Even at his worst games, improved and adapted his playing style. Something very rare in today’s game.
By 1986 some were starting to say his best days had passed. He had by then 2 SB rings and MVP's with them, so a damn good career to reflect on many thought. In '86 he had surgery on his back and some thought he'd never play again. He comes back mid-season, gets Frisco in the playoffs, and then just gets plastered on the Giants Stadium turf. Now Young is brought to Frisco because that may be it for Joe. But SB's in '88 and '89 and a great '90 season. But then comes more playoff pain courtesy of the Giants, Joe gets laid out again. He's out for almost 2 years, comes back, becomes a Cheif and 2 more postseason appearances with them. When he retired in '95 it was generally accepted that he was in fact the most prolific QB the NFL ever had.
His dismantling of Buddy Ryan's defense as a chief against the Oilers in the playoffs is one of the most impressive performances I have ever seen from a QB
If Montana was playing in today's game with today's rules and medical technology, Montana would have won 10 superbowls!

He is tied with Terry Bradshaw for 4-0 in the SB and Bradshaw did it before Joe did. Terry did it in an era that was even meaner than the one Joe was in and he did it in 6 years exactly like Joe would follow. So really Bradshaw is the OG GOAT who was followed by Joe and those 2 are tied at the same exact level while Brady is 7-10 in the SB and with a full 3 more SBs and not to mention 6 more appearances than the other 2 GOATS that defaults Brady to the one true GOAT. But don't forget Bradshaw, he did it before Joe or Brady and he did it exactly like Joe and Joe is tied with him but Terry is the OG. And there were less teams then which means that you had to play the same teams more often and it was a lot tougher to win due to that. That era was extremely brutal even more so than Joe's era.

My greatest Montana memory was a Monday night football game against the Rams. The 49ers blew it in the first quarter, and the Rams took an early and really big lead. Over the course of the game, the 49ers whittled them down. John Taylor had to 90+ yard touchdowns in that same game.

In the famous 1981 Championship game against Dallas, Montana had thrown three interceptions before the famous "catch." But he still won it. 😀
The game that changed the fate of two franchises. Dallas lost 3 consecutive NFC title games and slowly deteriorated. The 49ers went on to win 4 Super Bowls in the 80s.

What isn't mentioned about the Notre Dame win over Houston - I believe the narrator says that Notre Dame came from behind to win 35-34, but that doesn't begin to tell the real story. I believe at one point Houston was ahead 34-12 but then Montana led Notre Dame on a 22-0 run to pull off a miracle win!
On top of that Montana was horribly sick the entire game.
People forget that he also had big fourth quarter comebacks against Pittsburgh (trailed 17-7, won 26-17) and Southern California (trailed 24-6, brought them to a 25-24 lead before losing on a last second field goal).
He has established himself as a comeback QB long before the Cotton Bowl.
For me, Joe Montana's SB success is like Madison Bumgarner's World Series success. Yeah, Bum lost a division series game, but when it came to the World Series, the point where it matters most, he was cool, dominant, and the best who ever played. Same attributes go to Joe Cool.

As a Giants fan who grew up in the 80's, Montana (and Rice) were absolutely scary--he could surgically cut through your defense at any time, and he could really take a hit. After seeing the Leonard Marshall hit live, I never expected Joe to get up, or even move, but he did--one tough SOB! Joe is a titanium tumbler compared to the over-priced china QB's today.

Acouple things that need to be said, he was also a very elusive running QB, he could shred a defense with his feet. Also, he had an intangible team leader component that is hard to put in words. He had a genius coach in Bill Walsh as well.
Facts
Joe did this in a time when "protecting the QB rules" were a joke if they existed at all. Some of the greatest defensive hits/plays from back then would be ejections and finds today. He would have a lot more rings if he wasn't clobbered from the blindside in a hit that today would be illegal. If you had to win a game, life on the line, you choose Montana.
Joe Montana was the Steve McQueen of the NFL. He was Joe Cool! He was also a modest QB, who attributed his success to his receivers, ie Jerry Rice that helped him look good. Just after Desert Storm I sent Joe a patch I had worn, along with a card & self addressed envelope. About 6 months later I received the card in the mail, post marked San Francisico. It was signed in a blue ballpoint pin, but I didn’t care. I did get a chance to see the 49ers vs Saints at a Monday Night game, 1995 (?) in N.O. Joe didn’t play, but Steve Young put on a clinic. Joe is still one of the best QB’s ever.
An important thing for people now too young to have witnessed Joe Montana playing the quarterback position in real-time and not in retrospect decades later now that a few generations of players have metriculated in and out of the League since when he retired, when assessing his G.O.A.T. status against Tom Brady (who, incidentally grew up in California and was a die-hard '49ers fan and idolized Montana), is that he accumulated his completion, yardage and touchdown stats all during an era when defenses were allowed to play a lot rougher against QBs and their receivers than they are these days.
