Thanks John, I was one of those asking about drawing safely from in a car/seated AIWB on your other video. I am a full time AIWB carrier already and I appreciate the demo. Thanks!
John, what dry fire exercise do you recommend to help with pointing my butt to the seat?
Butt points. 100 a day until unconscious competence.
I'm a very recent convert to AIWB. Your videos about it made me feel better about the direction of the muzzle while holstered. Despite the initial fears about carrying this way, it was really a no brainier for me as soon as I tried it. Drawing from the hip always felt awkward and forced and took me too long to align my sights. It seemed daily practice never actually helped. First draw from appendix was quick, accurate and Natural. It's also easier for me to conceal than when I carried in other positions.
Glad to help, James!
Oh, too many opportunities for jokes here...
Guess I never grew out of 13 year old boy humor.
None of us ever grow out of that. :)
TAPG is a great class, so cool to see lighter/healthier John Johnson. Inspired.
The one thing I HATE about AIWB is using the toilet in a public restroom.
Hmmm...maybe another video. I just leave the holster and gun connected where they are, slide my pants down in the stall, and do my thing.
Active Self Protection Extra - agree with you John, but if you have a flimsy (not gun belt) it flops around and could slide off the belt. Ask me how I know 😉 - this is one of many reasons I invested in a true gun belt
That's why I love my Kore Essentials track line belt. I get to the last click and I can lower my pants without having my holster fall off and the belt stays put. Btw this is not a plug for Kore, I just happen to love the belt. Bought 4 of them for me and my sons
Interesting. I find AIWB superior to other positions in this regard. With your pants down, the holster is resting on your leg with the firearm in perfect position should the need arise to draw while doing your business. I do detach the right side clip from my belt so I can unbutton and drop the pants. Left side clip stays attached to the belt (I'm a southpaw so holster rests on left leg).
@@victorferrer9067 has it right. Bought a Kore and could not be happier with it.
Listen, I carry AIWB all day, EVERY day. . . . The reality is holsters/wedges/hip extensions/blah blah blah. . . you WILL muzzle yourself carrying this way. It CANNOT be avoided 100%. Keep you booger hook of the bang switch and you'll be fine.
Pretty much. The car draw sounds good n all, but no one is going to point forwards then rotate left if they need to point a loaded gun at another person. Sounds good, doesn't reflect reality. Reality is that you NEED to point a loaded gun at another human being.
EVERY carry position will lead to you being muzzled at some point by your gun. Unless you move like a robot and never lean, rotate, twist or any sort of flexible movement the gun will muzzle you.
I never thought up untill owning a pistol that AIWB would be comfortable. And I was dead wrong. I tried 3 positions and AIWB is by far the most comfortable carry option in my opinion. Now what legit holster do I want.
Finally after so many years of failure after failure - the secret was to point the butt first!!! Thanks for the video!
OUR WORK HERE IS DONE.
This is off subject for this video, however since you have singled out us Ohioans more then once I am happy to inform you that we no longer will take your ridicule lol. Sanity has finally won out and Ohio is now like every other state where we are innocent until proven guilty in self defense cases with the passage of H.B. 228
WOO HOO! So glad to hear that the burden of proof has shifted to the prosecution!
Trick for drawing from seat, straighten your leg and flex your hip up. For car, keep gun off body in arms reach and line of sight
Wait wait hold on turns out I've been sitting down wrong. I've been pointing my butt away from the seat. LMAO!
AIWBs SERIOUS FLAW
The number one flaw to these types of holster is where the gun is pointed on the draw & in the re-holster.
If cloth or an obstruction gets into the trigger area, *_bang,_* goodbye privates.
If you on a self-defense draw or even on the re-holster from a CCW incident with all that
adrenaline and nervousness, *_Boom,_* you hit your femora artery.
To me, and this is an opinion, _only foolish people take the risk of AIWB_ their negatives outweighs their positives.
One mistake is all it takes for an instant transgender during a self-defense incident or in training/practice.

I drive a semi and have for years and have never had a problem with AIWB, it’s comfortable and safe and easier to draw seated than from strong side IWB
Amen!
1) I don't think it's an issue of whether you can sit/stand/do whatever in appendix, it's whether you can do that without stabbing yourself in the rib cage or thigh while in those positions -- i.e., do you guys just tolerate that discomfort or is the idea to feel no discomfort?
2) One question asked in the previous video that I feel would be great to investigate more fully is whether it's safe for the seat belt to activate with the gun in the appendix position. We know it won't impede the function of the seat belt, but will that pressure point that the seat belt has to conquer before it's able to distribute the load across your waist dramatically increase the risk of internal damage? If you look at seat belt syndrome, we know that the seat belt can cause internal damage. It seems self evident to me that adding a pressure point will greatly increase the risk & damage of the effect, but I'd like to see if you can tap your network to find a medical professional to discuss it?
I've seen a video where someone had a doctor indicate increased likelyhood of internal damage when using an AIWB based on a couple cases he had personally worked on. I can't recall the channel though. I personally find standard kydex holsters uncomfortable. The kybrid (basically a kydex with leather backer) I use distributes the forces much better over more area so I feel extra damage because of a crash would not be likely.
1. If you're feeling it on your ribs, you might need to move the gun down a little. I don't have that challenge a bit.
2. Everything I have read says no. But I will ask my ER doc friend if he will come on the channel and discuss it.
I found the video I had seen. ua-cam.com/video/hnbIw5LJZ6Q/v-deo.html
Ryan Boyer Pull your pants up.... it’s literally that simple. If your pants aren’t falling off your ass there’s no discomfort. I still prefer strong side just what I like but AIWB isn’t uncomfortable at all. It’s actually the most comfortable to me.
"it's holstered its not pointing at anything"
Me: Unless it's a hi-point, then it's always pointing
You should talk about drawstrings and appendix carrying. From what I have heard that is how most people including cops have accidentally shot themselves. They holster their firearm with the drawstring around the trigger then they rip it out shooting themselves in the process. If you own anything with a drawstring you should cut it out right away. Don't even take a chance.
Strong side is even worse with drawstrings, mostly on jackets. But that's on holstering, not unholstering.
Am I the only 14 year old that watches these videos.
Maybe. And if you keep watching you'll be the only 14yo wise enough to manage a firearm, stay out of trouble, and cover your ASP.
Very helpful video. Noticed your Wilderness Tactical Frequent Flyer belt. I just received mine and I know that it will help. Still working out the kinks for my new appendix carry style. This was the perfect video for me right now. Thanks John!
🤣. The start of the video. 👌🤣. Yea, I had to teach myself over the going on now 3 months of being a concealed carrier and choosing appendix carry. 1!. A good holster. You truly get what you pay for. And. Train, Train, Train. When you think you got it down. Well! Train some more
I carry both my Glock 32/23/19 and 43x all day long appendix. 😎😎
Try drawing from 4 o’clock carry with a coat and seat belt on. Not very easy👍👍😎😎
It's easy to carry appendix and sit when you carry really high like these two guys. However, if you do carry it high then it prints like crazy, just like with these two guys. Hilarious watching both of them stand there in just the right pose and posture so it prints less but even still, the guy with the cap is still printing and the second he makes a natural movement it will be obvious.
I think you're wrong on both levels.
Yep
@ASPextra while his tone is not great, he's correct. The beginning of the video perfectly illustrated this. Dude on the left was standing like a poorly designed npc in a game in an effort to not print. As soon as he moved his arms or torso, he printed quite noticeably. Guy on the right was similar, though not as obvious.
New findings are coming out that AIWB exerts pressure within the pelvic girdle that can really cause some problems with the hips and low back. It prevents the pelvis from being able to flex under certain stresses.
From a defensive posture, I think it's a great position. From a body mechanics/longevity aspect, not so much.
Thanks for taking the time.
I want to believe this video, but I have tried everything you’re talking about and it just doesn’t work.
Right holster and belt matters so much
Active Self Protection Extra I absolutely stand corrected. The part I was missing was the foam wedge. For me, the foam wedge is making an instant difference. :)
Excellent Pro-AIWB Tip, Last thing i want to do is shoot my legs or wobbly bits off. Thank you for a nother excellent infomative video 👍
Informative video. It was amusing to watch John at the beginning of the video, he looked like he didn’t know how what to do with his arms, it reminded me of Wil Ferrell in the movie Talledaga nights when Ricky Bobby didn’t know what to do with his hands in his first interview LOL! But good video though.
Dont you mean point your asp at the seat?
HOW DID I MISS THAT?!?!
@@ASPextra lol
Great information! Love the recent information on appendix carry. Would love to see more information on how to fit yourself for an appendix rig ... like ride height, cant, how to get the butt of the gun to turn into you ... even with a claw. Anyway would love to see more info on this.
Yep, forthcoming!
Who the hell is dry-firing behind the camera?!?!? I mean seriously!
Adjustability is the biggest thing you need in setting up Appendix. Incremental adjustment in belt tension helps a lot (i.e. D ring style v. holes and buckle style). Next look for adjustability in ride height and cant. Look at muzzle length. 1/4 inch increments can make HUGE differences in comfort. You have to be willing to think critically and make somall adjustments. The Dark star glock 34 length Orion bit my groin something terrible, so I took a half inch off the muzzle length and it was perfect -- the discomfort was completely gone, and I still got all the muzzle coverage I needed.
Yeah an infinite adjust belt is helpful.
@@ASPextra This was very good. I love my Kore Essentials, infinitely adjustable (and quick & easy to adjust) www.koreessentials.com/collections/gun-belts/products/x1-gun-buckle-black-tactical-reinforced-belt-set gun belt. Stiff enough to carry a large 1911 but flexible enough to work correctly. I would also recommend a custom made leather holster. I prefer them over Kydex for comfort and they are nicer on your gun finish as well. I like this J.R. Custom holster, the AIWB-CDAII www.jrcholsters.com/index.php/holsters/inside-the-waistband
I get no compensation for either of these recommendations.
Got this one from Blade-Tech: ua-cam.com/video/64Bx_V7rZNk/v-deo.html
I took Dr Scholls inserts and cut them to cut the kydex bottom of the holster 😎😎
I pull up and clear with dominant hand hold with other hand and let go of jacket and shirt with dominant hand and its at petfect height for a master grip. Its fast. During winter time the jacket and shirt and sweater is cleared so easy by dominant hand. Shirt by itself is easy to clear with non dominant hand.
John!!! You gonna shoot your one-eyed Ranger with that holster!…lol…jk
You realy realy realy shouldn't listen to this without watching.
Drawing fast takes real finger discipline so you don’t fire early👍👍😎😎
Great video
That’s important no matter where you carry
Okay but how do you go to the bathroom in public with AIWB...
How do you carry appendix if you are already packing? HA HA!
Holy heck. You two lost alot of weight. Looking good. Well done.
Great video btw
Sitting is a breeze with appendix 👍👍😎😎
So when you are seat-belted in the vehicle, you have the shoulder belt behind the grip? That leaves the grip exposed, right? Not sure I'm visualizing this properly.
No, put the seat belt in the normal place.
THANK YOU for this video. The level of DERP from the old wives club on AIWB is as you know, off the charts. Always refreshing to see knowledgeable posts/vids on this choice of carry.
Glad to help!
This is good content i Mexican carry everyday with a black powder pistol the hammer is very uncomfortable on my stomach though these tips are golden!
This was a great and very informative video! I am working through the process of getting my CCW and have been evaluating what is the best way to carry.
Prolly a dumb question, but I’m here to learn. For comfort and seatbelt safety why not stage the gun in a quick access location off the body while driving? Like a quick access gun safe or additional holster secured to the vehicle near you.
Because the time you are at greatest risk from your own gun is during administrative handling of it. Drawing and holstering is one of the most dangerous activities you can engage in with your gun and doing so in a car is much more difficult.
Thanks for these vidyas, John. I've been considering a new single-stack and carrying it AIWB, but still 'researching.' This double-stack McRib at 4:30 is causing back problems.
As a guy who has lived with back problems, ugh.
Active Self Protection Extra have you any opinion on the Concealment Express IWBs?
I'm very curious about the video of the guy that was in a lab, holstered his gun, bent over and shot himself. I heard it was a G Code holster.
I'm not making a case against it. I just want to know what actually happened and why. Thank you for the information.

Both of you have lost a ton of weight! Keep up the hard work!
WHAT'S UP JOHN
C... BIG THUMBS UP ON THIS VIDEO. THE ONLY TIME I BUCKLE MY SEATBELT IS WHEN I'M ACTUALLY ON A STREET ROLLING AT SPEED LIMIT. IF I PLAN TO PARK OR IN A PARKING LOT SEACHING FOR A SPOT THEN MY SEATBELT IS OFF AS SOON AS I TURNED OFF THE CITY STREET. I DONT WANT TO GET AMBUSHED AND I'M BUCKLED IN TRYING TO SCRAMBLE TO GET THE SEATBELT , REACH FOR PISTOL, OR GET OUT OF THE CAR BUT IM STILL LOCKED IN THE SEAT.
I really, really don't recommend that. The chance of car wreck is infinitely higher than ambush in a moving car. The car is not a target one iota until it stops. Leave your seatbelt on.
I...LOVE...YOUR...VIDS! I hate appendix carry. but damnit if you're not THE BEST instructor on UA-cam. I greatly appreciate your presentations, all of them. Non teachers think that experience is enough to instruct others on how to do/think about/understand something new. so not true.
If you hate AIWB, then carry strong side…no problem at all!
@@ASPextra WOW...I feel like I met a celebrity! thanks so much for taking time to respond. we all appreciate it. and thanks to your insightful videos on proper holsters I've got new criteria when selecting ones for strong side carry. well, I knew already but wasn't really following the rules. but your presentations really drove the points home so now I carry the right way and do so with added confidence.
Thanks, I learned a lot. Not sure I will go with it because I have been strong side so long, but it is worth considering.
Nothing saying AIWB is the only way. If strong side works well for you, then awesome.
Is someone loading mags next to the camera?
No other way to carry but Appendix 👍👍😎😎
Well, that's not true really. I prefer AIWB but strong side works fine too. Just slower.
Witchcraft guys! Total witchcraft! Hahaha. Keep making great videos.
BURN THE WITCH! ;)
@@ASPextra Hahahahaha. Nice one! Love Monte Python. Be well folks.
ok, why not chest carry, found it to be the best, obviously my opinion.
Because you can't conceal that.
So, with a loaded pistol in a holster that meets your three criteria,, would your wife allow you to point the pistol at her head for hours at a time? Or even for just a few seconds? What about your kid's head, or grandkid's head?
I think not, because that would be unsafe, and weird. But appendix carry is great, because you are using a good holster.
Holstered guns are not pointed.
@@ASPextra Re-read the question. And I'm guessing that you know the answer is "heck no!"
BTW, love your channel, and love your insights.
Great job on the video work! Love that smooth transition around the two of you. Nice to see Trigger get some screen time too 😄
Been carrying appendix for a while now, and a full size gun, Glock 17. The best thing about it is it is REALLY concealed unlike wearing at 4 or 5 o'clock. I've had several instances where I was in crowded areas, and I clearly felt someone rub/blush against me and they had to feel that steel on my side. Crowded area etc. With appendix, it's not very likely someone is going to bump into that area unless you're having a "good time" lol. That being said, the way the belt lowers in the front while carrying appendix makes the back of the belt tighten keeping your pants up. With 4-5 o'clock it always sags just a bit, and i'm used to wearing steel lined gun belts. You WILL feel the gun press against you while sitting, but you get used to it. Only time I ever had an issue was with Ameriglo sights, the rear sight was so sharp it would make me bleed, I like the Glock Steel sights, they work for me. Be safe everyone, and remember the #1 best tool is SITUATIONAL AWARENESS like John says. Active Self Protection thanks for the videos, great content!!
Yeah not many people are going to give you the pelvic check lol.
Active Self Protection Extra Hey checkout Ulticlip’s XL I used to use loops, i favor the clip now it’s so secure and easy on and off. And it LOCKS down not like those stupid plastic clips
Good information. Love the car. I have a 2018 identical to that one, but I have the spoiler and automatic 10r80 transmission.
I had a prerequisite to have a manual even though the auto is objectively better.
@@ASPextra I prefer the manual, but the wife still will not try and learn to drive a manual. Still happy with the auto though. Love the content on both channels. Keep up the good work.
Best way to carry. I've carried AIWB for 3 years. It takes adjusting and practice. Alienwares been good to me. I've carried a full size M&P 9 with ease. But gotta adjust adjust adjust.
You guys talk about additional length in a holster helping with fit, but I notice John specifically wearing his holster rather high. While that obviously makes it easier to get a good grip, care to comment on how that effects fit and comfort, sitting and otherwise?
It’s not high. Just high enough to get a grip on the pistol actually.
@@ASPextra gotcha. I didn't know if his had adjustable ride height as some do, and how that effects things
Just like when I get a new pistol and am unsure about having a round in the chamber Ill carry it for days around the house unloaded and at the end of each day if the trigger is still in the forward position i know im good to go.
Two guys now that have lost a bunch of weight and are inspiring me to get my ass moving
Try Tenicor holsters. After so many bad ones, I really like theirs.
The guy in white did it wrong
I think I can figure out how to sit down while carrying aiwb. What I need to know how to do is use a public urinal while carrying aiwb?
Unzip. Slide the holster just into your inguinal crease. Do your business. Slide back. Zip.
@@ASPextra
Thanks
Love appendix.
I need to find the right fit for my AIWB. Mine hurts my belly and jams into my lower abdomen when I sit.
Think of an AIWB holster more like fitting a prosthesis than buying a piece of gear. :)
@@ASPextra "Good salesperson, I'll need to remove this AIWB product from it's package and test it for fit. Fear not! This junk is cleannn..."
Great video. Warrior Poet has a great video dealing with the “but it’s pointing at my junk” objection. Short answer: no.
Holstered Guns are not pointed.
Thanks John
Sorry if I'm being a stickler. I prefer myself to index the muzzle on the steering wheel. That is, draw stroke, press the muzzle against the steering wheel at around the 3 o'clock position and then glide the muzzle on the steering wheel until im toward the target. Either in front or to the driver window. This ensures you wont entangle INTO the steering wheel. Just something I was taught. Great content. You guys are awesome. Cheers fellas
Oh wow look at me all early AF.
If you don't have or can't afford a G34 I understand but seriously if its an option just carry a G34 in that G34 holster, its quite possibly the best 9mm handgun out there.
@activeselfprotection what about the people who are left hand appendix in the car

Yeah, probably just as safe as any other but it still gives me the hiebejebe’s. I’d definitely want the Glock Gadget for a while until I got used to it.
I think the Gadget is a good thing.
Hey John, would it be too much to ask for links to products you discuss in the description? You both were listing them and on a mobile device it would help to just have links. Thanks and love the channels!
I will add them to the description.
Thoughts on holsters that have magazine holder attached AKA Tier 1 concealment, T-Rex arms?
A lot of people like them, but I personally don't. Makes me feel like I am wearing a codpiece. If you wanted to go that way, I would absolutely recommend KSG Armory over Trex.
Let's be real here. If you have to get a gun into action and you have a sub second window of opportunity, you're not going to drive outwards then turn towards the driver's side window. That's pretty much fantasy.
I disagree.
@@ASPextra the reason I say this is that this draw stroke you propose while sitting in a car is completely counter intuitive to your instincts and every other type of training that 99% of people have done. Every other training I have ever seen is 1 pull, 2 point the weapon at the target, without exception. You will default to this, since we fight how we train. Even after practicing the drive out then turn, under stress I highly doubt that it would change the fact the it would go pull, point at threat, start shooting once you're on target and ready to fire
I do highly agree with everything else in the video. I watch your content daily and this is the first thing I disagree with (outside of some legal stuff that you have said in terms of good shooting vs bad but that might because I think of it from a LEO perspective and not armed citizens)
Well, since training overcomes instinct, I would suggest training a proper seated draw stroke until it's part of your unconscious competence. :)
Thanks for the respectful interaction. I totally get what you're saying, and think that disagreement on topics is totally fine.
Yet another great video John! I am definitely beginning to prefer appendix carry when I can do it. I usually carry a little j frame (why? I just like revolvers) and when I can wear a suitabke cover garment like a sweater or fleece vest (dress code issues) I find it very comfortable, and safe. Summer is hotter than Hades here in Central Texas and I am going to have to work on that one this year. I usually pocket carry in the heat as I dont want to tuck over my holster.
Great video John and John. ;~)
Full of great information and answers to a lot of questions.
Thank you very much for posting it up.

Wilderness tactical 3 stitch or 5 stitch stiffness for AIWB?
I like the CSM, but a lot of folks like the 5 stitch.
So I hope I can get an answer for this. What belt and holster do you use for your vp9 for appendix carry. I havr about the same body type as you, just a little taller and my gun is an hk p30sk. Also thanks for this very informative video.
Honestly, it depends on budget.
My favorite kydex holster maker is Gabe at The Armory: get-asp.com/ksgarmory and if you use coupon ASP2018 you get 10% off. (I make nothing)
Next is Jon Hauptman of PHLster: www.phlsterholsters.com/ (use coupon code ASP10 for a 10% discount at checkout; again, I make nothing)
Third is Keepers Concealment: keepersconcealment.com/ his holster is what I am currently using and I love it. But it's expensive.
For a belt, I am wearing a Wilderness Tactical Frequent Flyer. www.thewilderness.com/belts/frequent-flyer-belt/

@@ASPextra Thanks so much for replying. God bless you and your family.
How is this not going to be red flagged as inappropriate? LOL! Great video sir.
Seatbelt is a concern. Tucking the shoulder strap isn't an option. AIWB is still my choice, but I practice releasing the seatbelt and getting to my firearm ASAP often.
It's really not a concern, honestly. I leave my seatbelt alone and untuck my over shirt from under it.
I have just not been able to warm up to AIWB. I can get over my qualms about having a pistol between my legs with a hammer gun like the H&K USPc, but I don’t like the way an AIWB holster interacts with a seatbelt. I also think I can establish a much better initial grip in preparation for drawing from a holster on my strong side, especially if it’s a one-handed draw.
I disagree on both counts, honestly, but you do you.
What belt did you say you guys were wearing?
I'm using a trayvax cinch belt but I think it's not enough support for my p10c.
I wear this one: www.thewilderness.com/belts/frequent-flyer-belt/
Thank you ASV for directing me to this video. So my next question Is drawing a gun and or defending yourself while in the car again a passenger either seated beside or behind you. It is sanrio that people are in every day that drive for ride sharing apps.
Defending AGAINST the person behind or beside you? That's a subject for a class like Craig Douglas' VCAST.
I've been carrying this way for years, and bending over or squatting has always been the worst for me. Maybe I'm just a fat POS I dunno.
Usually it's belt and/or holster related. A great AIWB belt and good AIWB holster go a LONG way toward comfort.
Thanks for the information. I'm "considering" AIWB. Got a Bravo holster and testing it out seems pretty good but don't know for sure. I'm looking at the ones you mention in this video. But I also saw saw the Tenicor VELO. Do you have any experience with that one?
Not personal experience, but people I trust think it's fine.
You guys are my weight loss inspiration. Though I do want to add something: while a shorter gun (say Glock 26) might be less comfortable aiwb than a G19 sized gun, there's a point where the shortness will help tremendously while squatting/sitting. I find that guns below 6 inches in length are really comfortable to aiwb. I carry them a bit higher than usual, and they completely avoid hitting my hips even when I squat knees forward. With a strong kydex holster and a stock trigger, I have no worries about blowing a hole through my thigh.
I found the opposite. I had carried a Glock 19/23 for 20 years before I started trying to carry AIWB. I thought a 26 would work better, so I bought one, then a 43, etc., and after 4 years of trying different methods the key ended up being that I needed my pants higher and tighter to suck that big gun into my stomach. The smaller the gun the more pressure per square inch if that makes sense?
Thank you very much.
@activeselfprotection what about all that but for lefties? Especially driver side.
I am a lefty.
