For some reason though I am always disappointed with the rendering in Vegas. I never know what codec would be best and the settings. One of the biggest advantages of VEGAS over many NLEs is that you can change project resolution, frame rate and progress/interlaced field order anytime you want! And the timeline cursor moving by Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Mouse wheel is awesome also.
I am an absolute amateur but whatever I edited I did it in Vegas. I started to work with DaVinci now but I'll just probably pay for Vegas at the end. Simply things like automatic crossfades are just more complicated in DaVinci.
In resolve you have to press the home button on the bottom right to open a new project. You can even have multiple projects open at the same time and switch between them by clicking the project title above the preview window. It's cool cos you can copy and paste between projects.
To trim ripple you just have to do it with the ripple edit tool. More then that, if you want to be really precise, you can trim and tipple trim with the third curser that will ripple and nuge on the singke frame level
If you take the time to learn Resolve's way...you have a universe of power. If you take the time to learn Vegas's way...you have a universe of power. Choose your path and deal with it.
Well, I found using Vegas that videos often get corrupted and the program crashes semi often. Hoping resolve will not have this problem and will also over deliver on features that Sony Vegas doesn't have.
Hey great video - what does the workflow look like when editing in Vegas and adding the finishing touches in DaVinci (i.e colour correction). Would you have to export the finished track in vegas then re-export or is there a better way?
in Davinci resolve you can do new project withaout closing - right bottom, and next to the options icon - you must click the icon what looks like "home"
This has been my experience with Vegas and Resolve too, editing is just clunky compared to Vegas. However, I'm back on Vegas V12 because it's the most stable version I've ever used. I'm missing some features but not enough to make me put up with the crashing.
To open a diffrent project, you push the home button on the down right corner. Theres a whole hub for those kind of things. But i think that there us a way to open a project from the menus on the upper side to
I can't give up Premiere pro. I haven't used Vegas sence 2005. It looks like it's changed in many good ways. Plus its always nice to just buy the software outright instead of paying the fee each month. Premiere is just that good though and I don't care for Resolve. Nice video
This shows exactly why I chose Vegas over Resolve. Resolve was made for teams of people who all work on different aspects of the project and get paid by the hour, so the longer it takes to do things, the more money they make. BTW, you can position video clips the way you want when you use the PIP effect on the clip. Also, there's a normalize option within the Switches right-click submenu. Quicker to get to.
Quite an inside information you have there! :) Vegas is no doubt faster, but there are a number of shortcuts that Resolve has and will match Vegas' way. One that comes in my mind: If you drag a clip over the one in front while pressing Alt+Shift will actually add a crossfade automatically, just like Vegas.
You seem to have the same sensibilities as me when it comes to the Vegas interface. I've grown with it, so I'm more familiar with the flow. The only thing that bugs me is editing audio in Vegas. Moving around events is easy. Applying effects which change the waveform and change the size of an event doesn't work. When applying audio effects, the waveform looks the same and the size of the even does not change. When adding reverb, the event will cut off at its original size. I's like the audio editing to work like Audacity. Another thing that bugs me when editing audio in Vegas is when speeding up or slowing down video. I'd like the practice of syncing audio to the sped / slowed video to be easier. Beyond the 4X accordion-crunch to events, it's a lot of guess work and manual math. You can speed footage up 40,000 times. It's really difficult to use though. If you know of a tip or maybe a later version has fixed this (I use 14), let me know. One thing that always confuses me in Vegas when I do it is masking video events and getting that mask to apply to child events. I've done it, but it is not intuitive. Does Davinci make this easier? 32:43 Those generated project files could be incorporated into the main project file itself, but then it makes that project file larger. It could be huge if you have a lot of media that generates it. They are written with the same media file that uses them inside the folder that media is. You can better organize your project media files into folders to your liking. Porting a large project size is more cumbersome when working with multiple team members or when archiving. Since those assistive files can be generated on the fly, it relieves these problems. Davinci sounds like a buggy work-in-progress. I believe that is why they are offering it for free. The advanced neural engine seems to be the feature for which they're charging. It took a bit for Vegas to become stable. I suspect Davinci will move to an everybody pays model when they smooth out things. As for now, it's as if they're using the community as debuggers.
Resolve because color tab and Fusion. Maybe edit would be better in Resolve, but I don't have seen any big problems. I typically had only one video and audio channel. And I like to do all audio effects in Fairlight tab.
To delete render files. Timeline>render files(or metadata, i dont remember)>delete render files. You can choise what will be your metadata folder in the project settings
The reason why you can't resize to a corner, is because the video has a pivot point. But you can move that within the video. That makes it possible to for example rotate around a point, other than the center.
Thanks for this comparison video. I'm a long-time Vegas user and now using Resolve some. Is it possible to edit Blackmagic raw from the Pocket 6K in Vegas? Thanks in advance.
Add sony vegas slip-trimming (Ctrl+Alt+Shift) to the equation than vegas chrushes resolve completely editing wise... i only use resolve for grading thru roundtripping xml /EDL.
Fairlight IS a DAW, so don't know why youre complaining. Its even one of the oldest DAWs in the world. And while I can't say if you could add audio effects 3 years ago on the edit page, you can now. You can also open the audio mixer panel on the edit page.
To be fair to Resolve and other NLES for that matter, the playhead stopping when you do something midway is actually a good thing, given that it has less chances of catching your NLE by surprise while you're playing 4k+ footage that is loaded with FX, thus, less likelihood to crash. In VEGAS, you have to *remember* to pause. That being said, it's also a good thing, because it imitates the behavior of DAWS, which is something musicians who edit their own videos will feel at home with. Its a trade off. I'm a VEGAS user, but I certainly wish there was a way to disable the playhead from behaving like that.
You don't like the shortcuts, change them! It's as simple as that. Don't know if you can choose to set DR to use Vegas specific keyboard shortcuts, but you can change it to use shortcuts of other NLEs.
I don't hide them because I want to delete them with the media when I'm finished with it, and deleting them can sometimes fix corrupted vegas projects. There probably is a way to do hide them but then those cache files will build up on the machine. I wonder if there is a way to link them to the media file? That would be nifty.
The reason why normalization takes so long, is because it's not just a simple level adjustment. It adhere to whatever standard you choose. It also has to calculate peak output, so it's doing several things at once.
Dragging a webcam image and positioning it anywhere on the screen is easy in Streamlabs. Don't know why you'd want to do this in video editing. I've been using Shotcut lately. I almost got Vegas pro for cad $400 last Christmas but opted for Komplete 12 Ultimate for the same price. Resolve crashes my i5 6 core 3kmz pc. Might have something to do with my 16Ram though 🙄 I'm surprised that the audio wave form isn't increased when the track is normalized like in Audacity. Shot does a crossfade automatically and Shotcut is open source.
Yea I like both and I think Komplete was a really good choice. That was my first buy after the computer and DAW. I used to keep myself recorded in obs but have the ability to move myself around the screen in editing is very helpful.
I actually have a second computer that does the screen recording to take the load of my main machine. I've worked with both vegas and resolve on much weaker machines before and resolve crashes a little less than vegas. I don't notice anything super different other than vegas does not like it if you move a playback cursor back to where you just trimmed an event that is no longer there. If I avoid this then I rarely crash, even on weaker machines, and when I don't avoid it I'd say there is about a 2% chance of a crash.
####its so simple both are good for editing . vegas pro is good and easy to work even its very good for beginner but davinci resolve is only for professionals where you can get edit+audio edit+color grade+fusion(its a hidden magic inside resolve)....davinci resolve is more powerfull than vegas pro and you can get free version & studio version is 299 $ (one time payment).. ....only problem is davinci need deep learning curve....if you learn davinci resolve 16 you can easily replace (premier pro+after effects)........if you wana edit for youtube or a projects or dont wana learn you can go for vegas....but if video editing is your profession better choose davinci resolve studio16 or premier pro or avid/final cut pro.....

@@MMPHOTOANDVIDEO It looks like the problem lies with your specs itself, it's just not powerful enough to render more quickly. I edit with Intel Core i5 6500 + AMD RX 560 machine, rendering a 100 second 4K @ 24 fps video would usually take around 10 minutes. With heavy effects applied and multiple layers, it can take up to 90 minutes. If you're using VEGAS Pro 15 or later, try rendering in MAGIX AVC with an NVENC preset, it uses GPU acceleration to speed up rendering.

I paid $107 for the upgrade for Vegas Edit.... the $200 price that you are saying is for Vegas Pro that comes with Boris FX Primatte Studio (price that one independently), Sound Forge Studio, and Vegas Stream (Newblue FX Vividcast). So Resolve Studio (which I also own), does not "win".
@jesilOkuefuna you need to get your weight up fam. Resolve in Vegas is is two different things. If your poor, go with the free program. But if you get paid good money to do what you do then invest back into your business and get industry-standard program bro. Nothing is wrong with the Vinci but if you got money there's better programs. And when you mix Vegas with some industry-standard programs like set fire red giant universe or ignite......your doing a whole lot better than what you can do with the free program
You didn't mention anything about rendering. Obviously because Vegas is a complete joke compared to Resolve rendering speed and codecs. Vegas 18 is even worse than 17 was. Most people use video plugins. Good luck if you use vegas. Plugins usually have to be made proprietary for Vegas. In Resolve, the OFX just work, except for some of Red Giant plugs because of Red Giant, not Resolve which is another story. Davinci Resolve is FREE. Most you tubers don't need the studio version for basic stuff.
Someone else brought up a similar issue I addressed in their comment, but in short, Vegas is actually faster for me than Resolve is many instances, it usually pretty close and both are very quick so it didn't stick out to me as a major difference. However, I am running Vegas 18 which was massively faster than 15 which resolve beat without an issue. Resolve was less complex to set up for sure making it easier for someone who is new to get the optimal render settings, while vegas has a massive list of codecs and then inside each option is a huge list of presets, so I think Resolve in general provides an initial simpler experience but I still prefer vegas for rendering, cause once you got your preset set up it goes very fast. Different experiences for different machines and setups of course. I haven't updated to the latest resolve, I'm one version off, so maybe the new one is way faster.
for all that whining and nit picking i can live with a "FREE program DaVinci Resolve" , to me Vegas look old and outdated interface and for $599.00 its a joke. i dont know how or were you can get this for $300 because Vegas pro 18 is $599.00 , did someone say there is a free editor for $0 ahh thats right its called Davinci Resolve. btw have a go at rendering times Davinci Resolve much much faster, id say equal to Final cut x.

The only shame is that it's not aval. on Linux. And that's the only reason to consider DR over Vegas. Love your video, thanks a lot.
I use Vegas since version 3 and I try to force myself on davinci every now and then. I just can't get use with the editing flow. For some reason though I am always disappointed with the rendering in Vegas. I never know what codec would be best and the settings. I feel like davinci is doing a much better job in that area and with better image quality.
One of the biggest advantages of VEGAS over many NLEs is that you can change project resolution, frame rate and progress/interlaced field order anytime you want! And the timeline cursor moving by Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Mouse wheel is awesome also.
For audio effects just scroll down in the effects tab. Some are in the right click menue and the common ones are in the inspector (also)
I am an absolute amateur but whatever I edited I did it in Vegas. I started to work with DaVinci now but I'll just probably pay for Vegas at the end. Simply things like automatic crossfades are just more complicated in DaVinci.
Thanks for this video! It helped me a lot with an assignment for uni
Vegas pro This is a cool editing program, the work speed is awesome. there is everything you need with a cool link with Boris fx this is your bomb.
In resolve you have to press the home button on the bottom right to open a new project. You can even have multiple projects open at the same time and switch between them by clicking the project title above the preview window. It's cool cos you can copy and paste between projects.
This is a really good comparison
Right click on the text input in the inspector-modify>per cheracter midify. You can now control every latter cepretly in the modifier
Hoping resolve will not have this problem and will also over deliver on features that Sony Vegas doesn't have.
i use both, theyre pretty good!
Hey great video - what does the workflow look like when editing in Vegas and adding the finishing touches in DaVinci (i.e colour correction). Would you have to export the finished track in vegas then re-export or is there a better way?
I Love Vegas!!!
Down left button on the preview screen you have a triangle drawing, that enables transform controls
in Davinci resolve you can do new project withaout closing - right bottom, and next to the options icon - you must click the icon what looks like "home"
But i think that there us a way to open a project from the menus on the upper side to
Using Vegas video since 1.0!
This video is excellent!
@@adimatis but you don't have to press any keyboard keys to do it! :D
Nowadays, DaVinci Resolve is king and the perfect video editor.
Davinci is great, the only major downside is that it is so freaking unstable, it crashes 100x more times than the competitors.
Wdym, davinci is the most stable editor by far. Because it uses Gpu and CPU
@@ChumpyChicken I don’t edit anymore, but was my main software and was mas unestable
@@33Champi that’s just a specs problem
@@ChumpyChicken Bro. I have a ryzen 5 2600x, a rtx 2060 and 16 gigs of ram

I like to move picturtes in my videos very often, so I'm going to give Resolve a shot just to see if it will be faster to do that.
To delete render files.
Timeline>render files(or metadata, i dont remember)>delete render files.
You can choise what will be your metadata folder in the project settings
You can normalize audio w a shortcut (click twice to work) :D
The reason why you can't resize to a corner, is because the video has a pivot point. But you can move that within the video. That makes it possible to for example rotate around a point, other than the center.
is resolves playback still deficient compared to vegas after three years?
Thanks for this comparison video. I'm a long-time Vegas user and now using Resolve some. Is it possible to edit Blackmagic raw from the Pocket 6K in Vegas? Thanks in advance.
thank you for this video...which program is more computer resource-intensive..?
I can't say anymore. I haven't noticed any big difference recently for regular editing.
I use Windows XP movie maker. 🕺
To move images use "Track motion"
Where is it, please?
Vegas is King safe!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I've subscribed! This guy is articulate, clear, pleasant and knows his stuff. I learned so much from this video. Keep up the great work!
You don't like the shortcuts, change them! It's as simple as that.
Don't know if you can choose to set DR to use Vegas specific keyboard shortcuts, but you can change it to use shortcuts of other NLEs.
Yea I've been trying to switch from svp but when I try to learn PP or DaVinci I realize how fast svp is
You cant effect entire track, but you can add an edjustment layer right above it
PLEASE, how do u hide all the trash files vegas generates, maybe some comand to tell windows: hide (not delete) all .sfk files when created
3 yeas later are you still on VEGAS or did you manage to jump ship to Resolve?
I use resolve mainly these days. It's stability, FX, green screening and clip comping are just way better. It also handles 4k footage much better.
I get your points! If only I could edit as fast in Resolve as in Vegas ...that's still my only gripe with Resolve
how did you overcome resolve implementation of ripple editing. Just don't like how it works in resolve?
The ripple editing is one of the things I like more in resolve. It took a bit of getting used to but I really enjoy it now
I bet you have a pretty powerfull pc to screen record with vegas and resolve open, do u notice your vegas CRASH LESS with a powerfull computer?
I actually have a second computer that does the screen recording to take the load of my main machine. I've worked with both vegas and resolve on much weaker machines before and resolve crashes a little less than vegas. I don't notice anything super different other than vegas does not like it if you move a playback cursor back to where you just trimmed an event that is no longer there. If I avoid this then I rarely crash, even on weaker machines, and when I don't avoid it I'd say there is about a 2% chance of a crash.
Which version of Vegas are you reviewing?
18
Resolve is the Citroen of video editors.
Im a Vegas user since it was for Sony, and I can't deal with any other
Hey you're zooming in on your timeline where your mouse is, mine zooms in where the playhead is, how do I change that?
I'm 4 minutes into DaVinci and I miss Vegas Pro already
Yes, you can zoom audio to be higher.
And no, you cant zoom further in, than to frame level on the edit page. Why would you want to?!
35:55 You can zoom further into the waveform in the Fairlight tab.
Thanks! Good to know!
Hey mate!
Hey!
Cut tab in resolve is actually pretty fast
🙏🏾👍🏽🙏🏾
DR looks cool but...it is full of bugs.
I think the reason why Vegas makes i lot of sense is because it works like DAWs like Ableton Live , Logic pro
"duel"
vegas is def a faster work flow.. resolve and premeire requires to much for to little when vegas has a right click ....scale ,fx, ect
For me at least davici resolve is way faster. Now if i eant to go back i probbably couldn't
Vegas is too slow in exporting final 5 minutes video take 45 minutes
This sounds like you have weird export settings or are doing heavy fx. Resolve and Vegas render about the same for me. A 5 min video like this one would only take a minute or two to render. I run an i7 and gt 1050. This is for vegas 17 tho, which I saw a big improvement (I transitioned from 15)
@@ComposingGloves 1st any many thanks for replay sir i have intel i3 4150 4th gen ; GT 1030 i not use any heavy filter but render is always slow any idea ?
@@MMPHOTOANDVIDEO It looks like the problem lies with your specs itself, it's just not powerful enough to render more quickly. I edit with Intel Core i5 6500 + AMD RX 560 machine, rendering a 100 second 4K @ 24 fps video would usually take around 10 minutes. With heavy effects applied and multiple layers, it can take up to 90 minutes. If you're using VEGAS Pro 15 or later, try rendering in MAGIX AVC with an NVENC preset, it uses GPU acceleration to speed up rendering.
Composing gloves is right. I have a 12 yr old computer i used that before, it took an hour to render for just 7 minutes then i bought a new one i have ryzen 9 3900x and nvdia 1060 rtx super 7 minutes took only 1 or 2 kinutes and i used lot of vfx. Depends on your specs
@Credo Vertigo sorry i use edius 9 now deleted vegas
the thing i hate about davinci resolve is codec limit that includes color format and audio formats
they did that intentionally so you get their studio version but technology changed
but based on experience davinci resolve is not great at all but theres no better option thats the main problem
Take into account that upgrading from Vegas 18 pro to 19 pro is $200!!! DaVinci wins.
I am fucking shocked how superior Vegas is but I am so pissed off with its stability :(
DaVinci is shit, CupCut is ok, and Elements is what it is. Hit Film is useless. I'll just use the camera with no edit.
To be fair: You can pick up previous versions of Vegas on Humble Bundle & co for
Nah, he probably gotten this SVP off of Humble Bundle or was talking about the version that he has. - Which is "old" and has a price drop now.
Lol i goes to the free and the best editing software 🫡 Davince is the best editing software. Vegas there’s so many issues and their software so expensive 😂 and the update too 😂. Dude there’s so many cheaper editing and fast too and easy to use 🫡
