I used to drive a 1983 2wd with the 22R and the only problems I ever had were a couple fuel filters (I lived on a dusty dirt road) and a water pump. Other than that, the little truck never let me down.
Put in a Diesel! 5L and turbo it and it should be fun. Most of the old Hilux still running around in my part of the world are Diesel, almost all of them were or still are work trucks.

Replace the water pump if you use the 22r. And water pump failure is the primary cause of a cracked/warped head.
