I know Chuck is seen as the icon he is in pop culture, but it’s really cute and fun to see him with his student like this. You just don’t get genuine TV like this anymore.
They took the time to speak with him at length, do a nice demo and get some laughs. Excellent. My son started lessons at 4 years of age with about 30 kids. Four years later, he earned his jr black belt along with only one other kid who had started at the same time. Nothing better than teaching children when young that their success is predicated upon their efforts.
Watching these old re-runs of Johnny and the Tonight Show I realize how far we have in many ways digressed as a society. Hopefully we can change and mature and realize we are all one community. It's never perfect but we can at least strive for it.
We need to stick to our forefathers plan from the beginning of our country. To have God in our lives and to keep the faith even though there are times where it'll be extremely hard to do. Keep in the faith. God. 🇺🇸
I'm a 3rd Degree Black belt and I taught for 14 years to kids of all ages. I just loved it. To watch the kids' discipline, grow and confidence was very rewarding. I also taught adults. But the kids were a lot of fun. Some adults were afraid to fight back, but when I told them when and if they got assaulted, they may be raped or worse, and that it would affect them and their relationships the rest of their lives then they saw how important it was to fight back and defend themselves.
I’m a 3rd degree blackbelt. I’m thinking of getting out of teaching because these 20 something parents scream at me that I’m picking on their kids. They’re one to two steps away from from bb & “need to up their game” it’s frustrating
Thank you amazing people who Run Johnny's UA-cam page for posting this after i Emailed and asked them for it :) As a Land of the Lost fan, i had been searching for this clip for years.
This is amazing in comparison to today television. Respect, eloquence, culture and education, all in entertainment program. No one saiz"you know" and "bro" or anything empty. Thank you for the video.
Chuck Norris had done Return of the Dragon with Bruce Lee before this show, but at the time of this appearance on The Tonight Show he could not have known the film and TV careers he was headed for. Having 4 years of martial arts training myself, I recognize the techniques that Phillip used on Johnny. Particularly with the first technique, using Johnny's chin and hair against him, our Sensei always said "take the head, and the body will follow." And as chuck said, the confidence and other personal attributes I gained in martial arts training are something I use and benefit from every day. Fortunately, I've never had to defend myself. I credit that by not being in stupid places at stupid times.
If Bruce Lee had lived . He would NOT have allowed RETURN OF THE DRAGON to be shown in the U.S. Lee said it was "too far out for the Americans." He said, "Enter the Dragon " was for the American film market. Unfortunately, Lee died before the film hit movie theaters in 1973. He never got to see his impact in the states.
LOL! CLASSIC! WOW, I never saw this before! Seeing the legend Chuck Norris as an instructor NOT as an actor is great! At this point in his career he just filmed Way Of The Dragon with the ICON Bruce Lee and in just a couple of years was well on his way to superstardom! Here's hoping that young man went on to do great things!
My son is a black belt in taekwondo. His master instructor was at a conference with other owners of martial arts schools several years back and, long story short, someone was able to arrange for Chuck Norris to come spend some time with them. As he described it, the moment "Master Norris" walked into the room, every serious and dignified martial arts school owner in the room disappeared and was replaced by a collection of 12-year-old fanboys.
Oh my gosh this little guy is now 59 years old! I hope he became a doctor like dad as he wanted!! This had to be right before Chuck was in films. Great segment!!!
Chuck Norris had done his first major film for Bruce Lee months before this but the film (Way of the Dragon) wouldn’t debut in the United States til months after this broadcast
He ended up being a child actor on the popular Saturday morning TV show “Land of the Lost” starting less than a year after this aired. The creators of the show sight this broadcast as the thing that got their attention, and wanted him for the role. my channel is dedicated to Land of the Lost if you are interested
A great interview, and a wonderfully funny bit to end the segment. However, it should not go unnoticed that this episode was literally within inches of never seeing the light of day.
It’s not a story so much as it was the fact that Chuck’s fists were so close to that child’s face that if *anything* went wrong I wouldn’t want to think what would happen next. You could tell Johnny didn’t know Chuck was going to do that. There were audible gasps from the audience. The potential for this great segment to end very, very badly is evident here, and therefore never would’ve seen the light of day, save for a courtroom.
Bruce Lee was supposed to be the main guest on the Tonight Show in August 10 1973 he was set to promote Enter The Dragon and to be interviewed for the first time on national TV in USA by Johnny, unfortunately he passed away exactly 15 days after this show on Friday July 20 1973. It would have been so cool and amazing to see Bruce and perhaps Robert Wall talking martial arts philosophies and reminiscent their training and preparation for Enter The Dragon 🐉
That would’ve been something to see. ☹️ I’m trying to picture Bruce on the show. I think he would’ve been cool, funny, sharp and maybe did a few demonstrations.
@@ghanasoul Indeed my friend, at some point he would have stood up and showcase some moves, his razor sharp wit and charm would have won the audience, the viewers and Johnny right away. He was so much more than a martial artist, a great philosopher and humanist too. Edit: Cheers 🍻 to Bruce and to enlightenment.
The original "KARATE" was a bad ass system! It involved striking, judo throws, and submissions. It was in the early 1900's that Karate went to strictly striking due to fighting politics.
It's amazing how much the late-night talk shows have regressed in the last 2 decades. Carson knew his job was to be a conduit for his guests. He became famous because he did that so well. These new idiots think we want their opinions when we are really tuning in for the guests.

This is only one small clip but it’s just _everything._ Sorry that it’s been so long, NOW i remember why i BEGGED BEGGED my mom to let me stay up for Johnny every school night! In less than 15 minutes Mr Carson (& Ed!) were FUNNIER SMARTER CLASSIER WITTIER MORE ADORABLE ETC than _ALL_ of the late night hosts that have followed. Aired 2 weeks before Bruce Lee's passing. Chuck and Bruce if Bruce were alive were the same age. This segment was aired also not too long after the Way of The Dragon was made. Talented little guy wonder if Chuck stays in touch with him.

what was great about the tonight show back then was, johnny knew how to host. he didnt kiss ass trying to be everyones friend. he talked to everyone like they were people, regardless of who they were. he was such a classy guy. funny, charming, considerate. nothing like that today. he is truly missed.
Johnny is so classy, and he gives this kid as much respect as he does for grownups and celebrities.
Absolutely 👍
I know Chuck is seen as the icon he is in pop culture, but it’s really cute and fun to see him with his student like this. You just don’t get genuine TV like this anymore.
We need more men like chuck! The world would be a better place!
Yes I Agree 100%
Exactly!
Like Johnny Carson too. He was the best late night show host of them all.
They took the time to speak with him at length, do a nice demo and get some laughs. Excellent. My son started lessons at 4 years of age with about 30 kids. I miss Johnny Carson! No one compares!
No matter who Mr Carson had on, he made them look intelligent and made the show classy and entertaining.
Nobody can hold a candle to Johnny and I don't think anybody ever will.
His is no routine. He's just johnny!

Regress. But you are absolutely correct.
I agree

That coat that Johnny is wearing just really takes you back, though! Wow😂
I thought hmm maybe this was a show from around Christmas time…….July 5th actually. Oops lol
@@JazznRealHipHop lol
Must've been something Scottish behind the wearing of the jacket. Very cool.
“The first reason I just told you.” 🤣🤣🤣. Johnny did ask the same question. That was funny!
Fantastic time and fantastic people Chuck and Philip. Hope he's doing well.
Carson was very quick witted obviously, but he was the best ever late night entertainer. 👍🇺🇸
RIP Johnny 🙏
Chuck Norris is an excellent teacher ❤
This boy is amazing. Chuck Norris has always been one of the best celebrities in history
Also a great humanitarian too.
That was some of Chuck Norris' best acting!😂😂
Johnny's too! 😂
Wonderful show. ❤ Martial Arts Training is an excellent discipline for our children.
Johnny is so awesome, wow a young good-looking Chuck!

Kindness, witt, and elegance. Johnny Carson As always.
And Chuck Norris showed intelligence, humor and kindness.
Great people,
😂👍
The kid is Chuck's mini me😂
Johnny was the ultimate professional.
Love Chuck Norris! Met him one time. Nice person
I love this episode!
To be trained by Chuck Norris at that age is so cool.
Chuck Norris has never broken a board with his hand, the board breaks itself to get out of the punishment.
You know the Chuck jokes!😂
The best show ever and the best guest too.
Thank you amazing people who Run Johnny's UA-cam page for posting this after i Emailed and asked them for it :) As a Land of the Lost fan, i had been searching for this clip for years.
Johnny and Chuck.
Two American icons.
What a good boy he is, I pray he had a good life.
It was something to see Chuck so young and not in an acting role. I was about the same age as that kid. Wish I had taken karate back then lol.
Johnny Carson was a remarkable artist❤
Love Johnny and he always made the show so fun to watch, great personality.
I wonder where that young boy is today? God bless
Fun fact: Philip Paley is the kid who played Cha-ka on Land of the Lost tv series.
Yup!
I never knew that.
Such class and respect, something rarely seen today. I love how Chuck Norris doesn't display a macho attitude, but is relaxed, friendly and humorous.
Look at the applause such aloud they are loving it 😊
Laughed so hard, cried when the kid took down Johnny

LOL that was good and look at how young Chuck Norris looked
Ive alwjas liked chuck norris manner of speech. Always calm, fluid and simple
For “Land of the Lost” fans, Paley played Chaka on the show and was discovered as a result of his Carson appearance.
ohh that's interesting, thanks
I loved that show when I was growing up ! I wouldn't miss it on Saturday mornings. Thanks for the info.
And former Pistons NBA player Bill Laimbeer played one of the sleestaks.
Ty for the info
You heard of “The Day the Music Died”. Well, when Carson passed away, it was the day late night talk shows died. He was the best!
Chuck Norris was always a great martial artist and humanitarian man😉 especially with Kids!😂👍🏿

It was ❤❤❤
That was awesome!
Thank you.
Chuck's hair! OMG, that takes me back to another time!
Man I miss these days. Johnny is unmatched.
chuck norris is currently suing NBC, claiming law and order are trademarked names for his left and right legs
I wonder what the kid is doing now. Johnny is the interviewer every because of his natural demeanor. Who have this gift anymore
A great interview, and a wonderfully funny bit to end the segment. However, it should not go unnoticed that this episode was literally within inches of never seeing the light of day.

The guy behind having the time of his life
For those who think Chuck passed away, he did not. Two reasons:
1. He turned 83 this past March,
2. HE’S FUCKING CHUCK NORRIS!!!!
Thanks to his Total Gym regimen.
... and he is a 4th degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, under the Machado family. They are cousins to the Gracie family.
✨️ Chuck Norris should be president ! 👍
Chuck Norris died 20 years ago, Death just hasn't built up the courage to tell him yet.
Get your facts straight!!
Johnny must have been selling cars in Macon that week with that suit.
I heard he was never invited on the Johnny Carson show, but Chuck Norris showed up anyway!😂
That Chuck Norris seems like a great instructor. I hope he kept at it and made something of himself.
What a cutie
Love seeing the Lone Wolf so young!!

Sad but very true. I liked Johnny and Dick Cavett. There's nothing like those people in entertainment today ...
That's a cool looking desk Johnny has! Wow! Awesome video!
Who misses Johnny Carson 🖐️
That Chuck Norris guy looks like he might go far in life.
Chuck Norris doesn't reach far,
he can reach the end of space in under one second.

Well spoken kid, I don't ever remember seeing this airing, I'm now wondering how his life turned out✌️
