      We need to improvise, what about a telescope in space, using a 1000mp sensor complete with a metric crap ton of vram(128GB might not be enough if we want to take serval 8k 30fps video at a time), a 32 core processor and a(lot of) co-processor to deal with real time image processing , two efficient solar panel and a self temperature regulating system to keep the frost out of the camera...Just for the sake of it, have a plasma (gas based) propelling system where we might need to refuel after a couple months
      What do you think bro? I think we can stalk anyone on earth with this one.

  • @BandH
    @BandH  11 років тому +5

    Yes. The most extreme telephoto focal on the SX50 HS camera is equivalent to 1200mm on a 35mm standard which is what the lens in this video is. - Yossi

    The Canon Super Telephoto 1200mm f/5.6L EF USM Autofocus Lens was built-to-order by Canon from 1993-2005. The lens is no longer in production. As such, you would have to look for the lens used. While extremely rare to find, the last one I recall being sold used was priced somewhere around $120,000.

    • @BandH
      @BandH  9 років тому +40

      AdiosKappa I'm fairly certain that having sparks come out of your lens when you press the shutter button is, in fact, not okay. I suppose I could be wrong, perhaps this is simply a quirky feature. But, it seems that pyrotechnics coming out of your lens would be a hindrance to the image capturing process. I would suggest detaching the lens from your camera immediately and contacting Canon for service/repair options. You might also check to make sure that your 'lens' in fact says Canon and not cannon. *Christina* askbh@bandh.com

    @Bob7k The Canon 1200/5.6L USM lens weighs 36lbs and is the longest fixed telephoto lens ever built by Canon. Each lens was hand-crafted at the rate of about 2-per-year and a delivery time of about 18 months. The lens is 33" long and 9" wide at the front element. C+ontains 13 elements (including 2 Fluorite) in 10 groups, stops down to f32, and has a minimum focus of 45.9'.

    If you are referring to the previous reply regarding its use with the 2x EF III converter, yes. Keep in mind that when using teleconverters, you are also multiplying the aperture by the same value. f5.6 x2 = f11 (roughly) and there are not any AF bodies which can autofocus with an minimum aperture of f11. - Yossi

    A friend of mine had one for a short while. He had a friend who was a nat geo photographer.
    He was at an outdoor concert for memorial day at the top of the hill about half a mile back from the stage. so he used this lens to record the convert from. about halfway through, the cops showed up. They got a call saying a terrorist was watching over the concert. he was arrested, and had two broken ribs from diving to save the lens from falling over when a cop tried to take it off the tripod.

      I suppose if oiloclips just aren’t doing it for you, the Canon 1200mm f/5.6L would be the logical next step. Alm makes the ENCinema 35mm SLR Adapter, which will allow one to mount Canon lenses onto the allm mCAMLITE Mounts made for various smartphones. So you could use this monster of a lens as well as any other EF mount lenses with an iPhone. *Christina* askbh@bandh.com

      You could use this lens to take photos of mars. Though, a telescope would be a much better option. You would be able to find a telescope for much less expensive than the 1200mm lens, that would likely be easier to wield, and would have more reach. If you are interested in photographing our neighboring planets, I would suggest sending us an email letting us know what camera you have and what exactly you would like to shoot. Our Optics Department could then give some recommendations for telescopes and adapters for use on your DSLR. *Christina* AskUA-cam@bhphoto.com

      with this lens its like taking 5,000 steps closer to anything subject within 360 degrees of direction in a fraction of a second. so, you make a good point but this lens does the same thing but at light speed

      adam ziegler but with that lens you can't fix the compressed air problem and you really can't use it than in cold weather or extreme situations. So why not get a 1800mm f/8 lens what is 1/10th of of that size with similar quality and only for $250?

    I have an older Sigma 800mm f/5.6 APO SuperTelephoto Lens in Canon EF Mount. Being an older generation lens the "chip" does not allow for current Canon DSLR's to change the aperture f stop. But it will still allow for AF. Fortunately for me I have an older Canon 35mm film body the 1VHS and I can use this camera to set the aperture on this lens. It does not really matter a huge hill of beans since these lenses were designed to be optimized when shooting wide open and an 800mm at f/5.6 is very good. The lens weighs 13.5 lbs or 16.5 lbs (I forget) and I use it on a good tripod with air suspension and with a gimbal head.

    @humenbean The rule of thumb is to keep your shutter-speed to within a stop of your focal length, 1200mm =1/1000, also the image stabilizer gives you about one stop extra stability so at 1200mm you really can't shoot under 1/800.

    @stand455 Yes you can, however the focusing ring is not mechanically connected to the focusing system, it rather uses an electronic system that controls the autofocus system.

    For a 4/3rd's camera, this lens would be equivalent to a 600mm lens. Currently, the longest lens available for a Micro 4/3rd camera is 300mm's.

    It kind of sucks that its a prime though. Since its so heavy and hard to move your just stuck with whatever composition you happen to get, unless you actually measure the distance between your subject and the lens and scout out the perfect location to shoot from just for one compostion

    Does it take cannon balls as well. That's a beast of a lens. What would be its maximum effective range? Could you sit on a mountain top 20 miles away from an object and get clear photos?

    • @BandH
      @BandH  10 років тому

      As with most all lenses, the Canon 1200mm f/5.6L EF lens will focus to infinity. However, I do not feel it would work for your stated 20 mile scenario if you are looking for detail. We have images and tests on our website with the lens shooting from Weehawken, NJ to Manhattan, NYC (around 0.8 mile), and from the top of B&H to various places in the vicinity. The most useful range for still seeing details and recognizing people would be between 0.5 mile to 2 miles.
