    Are the glass inside exactly like the 400mm F/2.8 lens + 2x TC, and 600mm F/4 lens + 2x TC?
    If the optics are exactly the same, isnt these newly released lens "Gimmicky"?

    Honestly, I don’t think this lens is too outrageous. I shoot with a 600 mm in 1.6 crop mode all the time for 960mm and often, this is not enough. And it’s not that I’m so terribly far away, but rather, that the birds I shoot are often tiny. I can be shooting a bird from 25 or 30 feet, at 960mm and still have to crop to fill enough of the frame. If I could afford this lens, it would probably stay on my camera 90% of the time, and would rarely be too long. I think it would just be “long enough” more of the time than 960 mm is now.

    In the dim and distant past,1998 I think I bought a Kodak/Canon DCS5. It sucked, for 6months I complained to Kodak. Eventually they sent TWO managers around with one of their cameras, to show me I was a plonker. Only in seconds it was obvious that my camera was faulty. They took it away to sort it out. Don't worry, punch line coming up. When I called to see what was taking so long, they said there was actually nothing wrong with my camera, the results were supposed to look like that. When I complained that their camera worked they said..... Naturally, ours is a pre-production version, they are infinitely superior to the ones we sell!!!!! When I suggested they replaced it with a DCS 520 they said... Oh, you won't want one of those, they have the same inherent flaws. Naturally he was lying, I was committed to digital by then and had to buy one anyway. 2.1Mp, £10,500, ouch. So, be careful about the words pre-production.

    When you look at the lens element diagrams you realise they are 400mm f2.8 and 600mm f4 lenses with a permanent inbuilt 2 X converter at the rear of the lens. I actually think that is really disappointing as they are not actually true 800mm and 1200mm lenses. Massively overpriced IMHO, get the EF/RF 400/600 versions and add converters should you wish.

      Absolutely right. And from the shape of the lens, this seems exactly what they have done. Added an RF adapter (at least this time not in silver) and a 2x converter. But the main problem by not "redesigning" the lenses is that the centre of weight most likely has again moved forward (which has been the issue when using the 400 and 600 primes with the Canon 2x converter (who especially long compared with the Sony 2x).

    F8 though... f6.3 or f7.1 would have made more sense, otherwise you may as well get the 600mm F4 then add a 2x teleconverter for 1200mm f8 then you have the flexibility of removing the tele for a more normal focal length. Any thing that far away you will have problems with atmosphere distortion and your always best to get closer.

    • @l.d.t.6327
      @l.d.t.6327 2 роки тому +1

      It wouldn't make any sense to build an even more expensive (and heavy) 6.3, when you have all the bokeh you need with F8 at 1200mm and it's already sharp wide open. There are lots of bird photographers using a 600mm F4 with 2x converter with fantastic results, and while you miss flexibility with that fixed length, and the price is really for the happy few, this thing makes sense for bird photographers and probably also sports photographers. Atmosphere distortion isn't a thing within the distance you usually take bird / sports photographs.

    • @gary_michael_flanagan_wildlife
      @gary_michael_flanagan_wildlife 2 роки тому +1

      @@l.d.t.6327 I did some more research and apparently the RF 800mm f 5.6 is shockingly soft for what it is. The results are pretty rough. My EF 600mm version 2 is way sharper. However, regarding the 1200mm, we will have to see when the tests come out. If it proves to be sharper than the 800mm than it would be a terrific songbird lens especially. But I agree that the versatility of being able to adapt to a 600 is much more preferential. Especially framing a fast bird at 1200. At least for me, it is difficult and I am pretty good at action shots. Can’t wait to see how the reviews look though.

    About the haze... know all about it... I shoot mainly windsurf during 'bad weather' at sea (good weather for the windsurfers hehe, meaning, strong winds, big waves).
    ALL Canon camera's from 5D , 1D till now the R5/R3 had some issues with AF sometimes. You really have to focus 'hard and accurate' on for example sails (colors).
    That 800mm would be nice (instead of my EF 500/F4.0L IS II with convertor ), but... the 'plunge' to pay 9000 euro for that 500mm was already bit ehr... weird (allthough it was worth it!!)
    PRoblem with fixed mm's is that with windsurf, sometimes they get bit to close, and you can't barely adjust to it. But a 800 with convertor, would make it possible to get action really far away or from the dunes even. ALlthough, due to 'sea, salt and sand' in the air, action to far away will always be bit 'hazy or grainy'... (but most even like that more, shows 'atmosphere' ,that's why shooting in heavy rain is sometimes 'magical', since you really isolate the surfer... and the surfers like it too, since I'm mostly the only one 'stupid' enough to stand in gushing rain, and stormy winds ;) )...

    See the video of Jan Wegener , the most expensive teleconverter .. it is just a EF600mm f4.0 IS III that is conveted to the RF600mm f4.. same MTF chart... coupled with the new RF 2x TC ..
    The RF1200 f8 = a EF 600mm f4.0 + RF 2x + EF to RF adapeter backed in one construction , MFT charts of both combo's proof it...
    RF 800mm f5.6 = EF400mm ISiii + RF 2x TC optics + the EF/RF adapter backed in one construction... the "old" EF 800mm f5.6 has better optics, it does not need a tc to achieve this focal length
    If you have a RF 400mm + a RF2x , you do not need the RF800mm f5.6... the internals are the same

    Guys!! Lol I just can’t do it!! I appreciate your review, but canon supposedly put a 600mm f4 and added a 2X converter, combined and rebranded it. I really doubt my EF 600mm f 4 II L lens (that’s actually sharper than the version 3) will be worth selling to get one of these two monster lenses. I just think Canon would have been better to create a 600 or 800mm DO lens instead. I don’t even think sports or Olympic photographers are going to run out and get these. I know for birds you can never have enough focal length but I think this is more of a publicity stunt than realistic. But thank you for all the hard work you put into your videos. You've called it an RF 800 5.6 multiple times in the video, and even displayed it in writing on images. It's f8, why don't you know what you're reviewing?

    Great video and great presentation but Im afraid that photography is headed in a direction where only the super rich can afford quality. The price of camera bodies and lenses has gotten to price that’s out of reach for people like me, I’m stuck buying used or antiquated equipment. Canon where is the 600mm $2000.00 lens that you missed out on? Canon wake up were not all rich.

    How many of those lenses do you honestly expect to sell .. in a year ???
    Less than 10 or more ??? tbh I'll be very surprised if you sell more than 5
    Would you know what Canon's projected Sales target is ?
    Considering the price points of each lense they are far from affordable . And i garuntee any of the gear reviewers on YT will never show the lenses ability of capturing Hi flying jets in greater detail ? .. or ships far offshore or even the moon . Can the 1200 and 800 capture the surface of the moon in greater detail ???

    A long time ago I was sweltering at noon at a Bombay open market whilst my lovely wife bartered for a pair of much need white shorts for me. Eventually the extended haggling settled on a price. Or so I thought. Then my wife started all over again with the opening words "Supposing I buy two?".

    Good review but don’t understand why all reviewers say “pre production” model. Anything given out to review nowadays is basically the final product; I can only imagine any software tweaks being made at this point in its development.

    11:22 I often find heat distortion even with my rf100-500 cannot imagine what it will be like while using a 1200 during sunny day🤣🤣

    I absolutely love some of the stats in that video but what sort of real world range are we talking about exactly? How small an object can I focus on and at what range? Can I shoot Goldcrests from half a mile out for example?

    Amy, you say about the weight and ballance, but keep in mind, this focal length, esp in the early 80's/ 1990's was /is mainly used for things like space rocket launch photography, as this focal length is basically a short telescope, so you could do far observations, albeit on LAND like plane speed trials, as the glass is not made for outer space!; this meant that these were designed to be put on tracking mounts, like machine guns on aircraft, so these were NEVER envisenged to be hand held.

    Hi Amy
    Thanks for the initial review. Clearly not detailed, but excellent given what is available so far. There are going to be so many interesting tests that you reviewers can do for these two new lenses and the 600mm F4. Here's my first request; 600mm (cropped), vs 600mm with 1.4 converter, vs 800mm. I'm guessing that quite a lot of the 600mm backlog will have evaporated and landed on the 800mm. OK there is a big price difference, but if you are an enthusiast who can afford £13k for a lens, it's doubtful that £20k is a meaningful difference.
    Best wishes
    Ron
