I have ridden Jap bikes and had a few British Classics for 35 years. Five years ago my brother let me ride his Harley. I got off the bike and thought, `now I understand`. Since then I've had 3 Harleys and the biggest smile on my face. They aren't as fast or the best handling bikes but I have never enjoyed riding any of my Jap bikes as much as my Harleys. They make me happy!

Harley has both form and function. Each one is a blank slate with an endless amount of customizing capacity. As far as function goes, I now have a 2019 Ultra Limited, and it is one hell of a machine, from the heated grips to the radiator cooled heads. It is so torqued out that on the open road its just a beast, but also amazing on the twisty turny's (is that a proper word?) a few days ago I left the 319 turns of the Tail of the Dragon in the Smokey Mountains and that engine was screaming for more. When Judas Priest wrote Turbo Lovers they weren't thinking of Honda or Yamaha's so keep that in mind.

Yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Sound. When i got my yamaha roadstars, the first thing i did was change the pipes to now i realize, to sound like a harley. (Well close). Looks. My favourite looks were my o6, and 10 triumph rocket 111’s. I just liked going out and looking at them. My indian springfield was bought for comfort. Looked good . Stage 1 sounded ok. Then i just bought an 07 Fatboy . (7500 kms)After market pipes black with red highlights and amazing chrome. I’ll tell you what, this thing is beautiful and loud. The loud will get me into trouble here. A lot of Towns and cities have created noise bylaws for motorcycles. I don’t care! LOVE IT

Regards the actual bike, I always went with form over function - though as I got wiser and older they tended to balance out.... and dare I say now in my 'grey beard' days function (read - comfort) might be taking over.
One question you might want to explore - Why do so many long term HD riders/ owners hold a particular disdain for the actual 'company'... the corporate entity as such.
Note - I'm not talking about recent 'mid life crisis' converts - I'm talking about 'long termers'... bods who've been punting them around for the last 40+ years.
And yep ... another good video.👍

Thanks that's appreciated. Why do you think loud pipes do not save lives?

    • @hanfordpittman592
      @hanfordpittman592 Рік тому +1

Physics! Essentially a person in car cannot hear a loud exhaust pipe (110dB A weighted) unless it is within 30ft of the vehicle. However while traveling at highway speeds (and your exhaust shooting to the rear of the bike) any reaction would be too late, so it doesn’t really help the situation eh? I guess the other point I’d add to this is that, at least here in the States, the overwhelming majority of accidents involving motorcycles are cars pulling in front of us meaning the problem is ahead of us not behind us. All of this said, I love loud pipes and am not against them. They sound great and are one of the many reasons I love my bike. Keep doing what you do, the biker world needs your outlooks! Cheers.

      @OldNotDead-Club  Рік тому +1

@@hanfordpittman592 yes that's the old argument. Having ridden both Harley's and other brands for 40 years drivers do hear you (it may only be a split second early) but it makes a HUGE difference. I'm not suggesting that it prevents all accidents. I am saying it prevents some. I and many others have extensive personal experience with this, physics is only correct when applied correctly.

When I was younger, (early 30's) I would avoid cluttering up my bike with an aftermarket windscreen and saddlebags cause I preferred the sleeker look over the function those addons offered. I started on a Honda Magna. First bike. Eventually got a Valkyrie. Finally rode a friend's sportster. My honest opinion was what a total piece of garbage, it's obnoxiously loud, shakes like a paint mixer, and the seat's uncomfortable. Then I read how Harley on year 2 (or maybe year 3) had to engineer their motors to be crappy so that they were loud and shaky. Sounded terrible to me. Then I met a friend who had a Road King. His road king had a matching little bitty trailer that he pulled. It was so beautiful. Every part was finely finished, the motor was not obnoxiously loud, the motor didn't shake like it was trying to escape the frame. Even the hard bags on the back were well done and well painted. Sweet gods in Asgard that was a beautiful, but tough looking bike. When he revved the motor and his wife squirmed a bit I decided the bike probably had just the right amount of vibration. When I took it for a test ride and i could see stuff in the rearview side mirrors I knew the shake wasn't too bad. Now it's on my bucket list. One day I want a Road King like that one. When form follows function, but time has been spent to make that form decorative or appealing, I think that's what does it for me. Function first, but then form is like icing on the cake.

Yes I agree with you, Harley Davidson’s are beautiful. I’ve spent my life believing that it’s function over form, Bauhaus if you like. But for some time now I’ve been craving a front mudguard chrome bumper and it’s coming to a head. I want this thing so bad it hurts, it’s only about $100 but I’ve always believed that if it does nothing - get rid of it. This little chrome bar is a nothing thing, but I’m going to do it. This is a major philosophical shift for me, and that’s the agony of it. But I’ve lusted after this thing for so long, I just have to do it. Will it open a floodgate though. I don’t really want to customise my whole bike (this time). It’s time< I’m going to do it for the ‘harmony’ in my life. I’ve,over Harley for decades and right or wrong, I’m doing it. The sound of a hog is just so manly. It’s bliss and I adore it. My Ducati Darmah sounds good too, different but good, especially on the over run. If you say Ducati repeatedly, it makes the same sound as the bike. Ducati, the name says it all. I should be a copy writer ! But the offbeat staccato of a big hog is bliss.

Shes got to be beautiful (to me) before I ride her let alone own her.
Aesthetics matter to almost everyone and that applies to many parts of our life.
Personally I think many classic motorcycles are beautiful, Triumphs, Royal Enfield's, Norton's, Moto Guzzi, some Ducati's, some M/Vs, some Harley's, some BMW's and even 70s/80s JDM's.
Royal Enfield's motto is "Built like a Gun since 1901" ie their 2 years older than Harley and been in continual production since then, being at least 1/3rd of the price of a Harley makes them pretty good value especially for new starters with taste for classic looks all being LAMs compatible.
I can see RE potentially taking a good deal of Harleys market share in the next few years as the world economy circles the toilet once again.
Cafe racers are my weak spot, form definitely over function even more so than Harley, I saw a Tiumph Thruxton in Thailand with a Norton Lyta tank and seat in a rose gold/copper finish, one of the most stunning bikes ive ever seen, some Harleys are beautiful but the Baggers to my eye look shocking and I would be almost embarrassed to be seen on one, the Chrome Soft tails and V-Rods are stunning and something id be eager to give a go one day.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, practicality and price do however make a difference in the real world, its only in the recently opulent West that motorcycles are considered a toy where resources can be squandered to build pieces of art, those days may be at an end unfortunately and I think Harley as a company will be one of the first ones to suffer with RE gunning for it like a Red Heeler hanging off the back end of a cow.
Interesting times but lets do our best to keep beauty alive no matter what happens.

Royal Enfield has been in continuous production longer than H-D.

As far as I’m aware production in India continued uninterrupted.
      Have you ever ridden one?
They’re not as slow as people say they are. The 650 has all the power and torque any reasonable person would ever need in the real world.
I own a Classic 350, after owning more powerful bikes I find she has plenty for me with unparalleled character and charm.

@@mockbattles lol maybe i'm not reasonable. I haven't ridden one, but I've ridden a triumph bonneville which has more power than a RE - i found it pleasant but underwhelming. 100hp with lots of torque is about as low as I would want to go. All the Harley's Ive owned were hopped up to at least this. I've also recently owned a Triumph Thruxton R and a z900RS both were fun bikes with about 110hp and loads of torque if i could justify multiple bikes i would have kept them both.
It was a technical break for RE they were made under licence in India and when the company went under the Indian licencee purchased the equipment and rights and resumed production. That's my understanding of it.

i disagree function over form. ive had baggers with windshields and comfortable seats fore well over 40 years. that said thats also what i find appealing to harleys. ive always liked fl front ends but a wide glide cool springer is also acceptable. i had choppers when i was a kid but comfort over fashion for sure.

'Pretty sure I had three points, but I'm tired so here's two.
Royal Enfield is the longest continuous running motorcycle manufacturer.
"Adventure" Bike owners aren't buying into anything other than that's as close to a Trail Bike anyone can lay their hands on these days.
(And expanding on the above for a third point, form tends to blur into function with motorcycles.. e.g. your Gide covers miles better than.. ..a Trail Bike handles poor roads and Winters better than.. )

I agree about form and function lines being blurred. RE closed in the 70s and a company in India that was making bikes under their brand through licencing purchased their equipment and kept the brand rolling - so maybe yes maybe no? Re adventure bike riders YES they like everyone else are purchasing an image.

Personally as someone who prefers modern engines, modern designs and aesthetic, harley Davidson never struck with me. It always felt very artificial about all the freedom, outlaw etc aspect
Everyone can be free, why would a harley make it diffrent compared to say a "boring" honda NT700?
I just never understood and still don't understand the appeal to get a heavy, slow handling, very expensive to buy and insure(in europe you pay per cc), underpowered and old fashioned bike
The whole "masculinity" thing also kinda bugs me. I see a lot of old farts that are overweight and have a bodyfat percentage of a very chubby woman, they don't work out, don't know how to fix their own bikes, yet this image is considered masculine
I always think that its good that ppl love their harleys and feel good about owning, riding, modding them.
It's just absolutely not my cup of tea

Function over form = BMW 1200GS 🤢 I'm allowed, I had one (for a very short eyesore time) 😁 I think most Harleys are an equal blend of both function and form😊... Yeah, some Ducatis are pretty and some become pretty ugly pretty quickly 😛Don't mind some classic Japanese sports bikes and some real old Indians and exclusive rare Brit bikes. I don't hate on all Bavarian propellors, In fact the R35 was piece of art 👌.
