      @@theothertonydutch They didn't evolve at all, not to ruin the fun. The people just built new ones as the beests live there forever as immortals. However, if they were able to some how create more of themselves without external help (probably by eating each other and constructing themselves over time) then they can be considered alive, and the probability of mistake goes up (this is a good thing). Mistake is good because this leads to natural selection taking affect on the new changes. This will *finally* lead to evolution! :D

      That should lowkey be the norm for all people tho. I find really "rude" to misspronounce names of people you want to interwiev or make content about, which sadly happens a lot. Like i get it, names from certain countries are hard to pronounce but, when someone makes a documentary about someone, at least learn to pronounce their name right.

    I had to write a paper for my animation art degree and my paper talks about art being an extension of human evolution as they are memes according to Richard Dawkin's meme theory in the Selfish Gene, and in it I had included research on Theo Jansen and his Strandbeests.
    I argued that fictional characters are basically mental entities that live and reproduce through human minds as memes that can even evolve into new characters, they also out live their creators. Strandbeests take it to the next step by actually being alive in the physical world.
    But both the teachers who are grading my paper turned out to be religious and do not subscribe to evolution, so I received a low grade.

      That sounds like an absolutely awful environment for learning. Limiting imagination and fresh ideas because they don't align with the teachers is the opposite of what a good teacher should be. Especially for an art degree; art should be free to express whatever the hell the artist wants. Is there nobody higher up you can discuss it with, or are they all zealots?

      There are model building kits (one of the kits strictly following Mister Jansens design pretty accurate, one using the linkage for a two legged"machine") from japan and he already build those. You can find both videos on UA-cam/Tested.
      So I hope he will build one from scratch :-)
      Even using plywood would be fine, as some strandbeest from Mister Jansen where in fact made of wood.
      (3D Printing would also be possible, but a bit boring)

    I think part of the reason these are so beautiful and awe inspiring to watch, is they have no obvious rotating parts that are typical of self propelled vehicles.
    Even the smaller wind powered kits have a fan which spins round and powers the whole thing, but this just has sails and a ton of legs. It gives it a very organic appearance, not like any other machine.

    • @sarowie
      @sarowie 8 років тому

      look up "modospider". The motor spider is using a Klann-Linkage, not a Jansen linkage, but the modospider can in fact be ridden.
      (Comparing the linkages, it is relativly easy to see, why the Klann linkage is easier to manufacture)

    • @dvklaveren
      @dvklaveren 8 років тому +1

      sarowie The Klann Linkage is easier to manufacture, but the modospider is not in fact all that suitable for driving.
      It should be noted first of all that the modo spider doesn't keep the driver on the same axis of motion. It moves the driver in a very jerky, unpleasant sinus wave that is very abrupt and for some people harmful.
      The modospider is definitely a vehicle and a successful vehicle if you state the objective to be moving a person from one location to the other, but it's still not a very good vehicle. Not that the Strandbeest is an inherently good vehicle, but given that the axis of motion stays parallel to the surface it is traveling, I think it's /more/ successful if it's manufactured that way.
      However, complexity remains an issue for these sort of machines. The more complex, the more points of failure can arise.
      So, neither is inherently more successful than the other. They are more successful in their own fields. Wheels are good for flat, prepared surfaces, the modospider is good for strong, irregular surfaces and the strandbeest is good for semi-flat-semi-regular, amorphous surfaces.

    • @sarowie
      @sarowie 8 років тому

      Alderick van Klaveren
      If did some study on those mechanisms my self. If you want a good laugh: Look at Mister Klans patents and image the drawn machine to be build. (I mean: The mechanism is nice and the construction procedure is rely unique in a sense, that all other walking mechanism are numerical derivative/tuned - only the Klann linkage can be somewhat constructed/modified/adjusted with geometry alone) Crank based leg mechanisms (aka one degree of freedom) are not really fit for medium let alone high speed. I mean: They can only use "static walk", they can not use the energetically for efficient dynamic walking ("running").
      They are also not really fit for rough terrain as the ride would be even rougher then the terrain already is. Nowadays with computers, it makes much more sense to use more degree of freedom and sensors, crunch numbers etc. Yet: Seeing a walking Strandbeest is fascinating and it inspires students and adults to build, learn and study. Learning why the jansen linkage (or any walking mechanism with just one degree of freedom) is not ideal teaches a lot of math and physics in a very visual way.

    I totally understand the simplicity of them being made almost entirely out of PVC pipe. However could an "evolution" of these also be more efficient and smooth if the bearings, cams, joints, etc where purpose built to endure? Like building a organic machine. The PVC pipe seems fragile and temporary.

    • @dvklaveren
      @dvklaveren 8 років тому +5

      The PVC is used because it's cheap. Since it's cheap, Theo Janssen can make new evolutions without having to worry too much about the costs. Additionally, he wants to keep the evolutions minimal and let enginuity drive the repurposing of the building blocks he's been given.
      Note that it's not actually just PVC piping; anything made out of PVC-related materials will technically do. This includes waterbottles, which he uses as a kind of balloon to store wind energy to be expelled once it's feelers feel the air resistance shift, signalling it's standing in water.

      there is no fun in using less restrictive materials. the fun comes when you have to find workarounds everywhere. thats what true creativity is.

    • @Cursethedawn
      @Cursethedawn 8 років тому

      I just feel he mentioned he wanted them to evolve. Evolving usually means being more efficient and adapting to overcome problems.

    Blowtorch? Surprised to hear him say that. For any who wish to use PVC as a building material, I highly recommend using an oven, or a hot air gun if it won't fit in your oven. Blowtorch has a tendency to make the thing brown and take forever. Also, a saber saw is THE tool IMO to cut the stuff with. Does a damn fine job. With these techniques, I highly recommend PVC as a building material for certain applications. Feels kind of like cloth while hot, then hardens. Take care to clamp it down well, or it may want to curl back up.

    Funny that the creator says "strandbeast" will Adam insists on the pretentious 'strAHND-baste'. These are clever engineering tricks, but they aren't "biological" or worthy of Adam's weird fawning.

  • @gijswelten

    Tangentially related: that type of PVC was/is a priced commodity for kids around the Netherlands, because it is great to make elaborate blowdart guns with. Triple, quadruple barrelled, scoped, with grips and all :P We'd scavenge construction sites, which there always was at least one of around town, for leftover PVC to build them with. Then roll some newspaper or leaflets into darts and annoy any neighbours who might have left their windows open :)

    Here's a challenge to you Adam! Build one that is powered by the wind as usual, yet one that's able to move against the wind... It is certainly possible, try driving it with a Savonius turbine mechanism to achieve that... :D (Like this comment to motivate Adam to make it happen!)

    I've been working on a small one that I'm making out of craft-sticks, and cheap plastic cotton-swabs. I
    All, the legs are assembled, The cams are ready (spokes from a paint-roller, and Three pairs are mounted,
    so, all I have left is assemble the other "foot", drill the holes for the chassis rods (bamboo skewers), and work up two belt-drives and mount them,motors, and receiver from a cheap RC car !

    It would be a bit advanced, but I thought it'd be cool to build one to cut the grass. The wings would charge up and power both the legs to walk very slowly and a set of teeth that shear quickly. Could be used for highway maintenance. Maybe a little tracking device to check on it, in case something happens.

    I'm sorry to have to be the one to say it...
    When you're in a Mexican restaurant, you don't have to say the name of the dish with the Latin d-rolling and whatnot. "Strand Beast" as it is spelled out. Sounds marketable.
