A long time ago, theo jansen uploaded a video of himself making them, step by step, and explaining the materials and mechanisms, showing what failed and what was successful... i could never find it again as much as I've looked.. i guess maybe hidden or deleted.. i just remember he was building inside a tent with clear plastic hanging down as a wall or door.. it was probably close to 2 decades ago.
@@caterpillarnana uploaded back then, yeah.. i mean, maybe it's still out there and you saw it more recently, but i can't find it. I have seen some more recent small snippets... but the one I'm talking about was really thorough, almost teaching people to build them.
this applied to chinese, egptians babylions and romans long ago. wait enough and you'll see dutch and European fall to stagnation and corruption, then enjoy them heh
The more I listen the more I don’t understand your comment. They’re perfectly clear, good initiation, it flows well, pronunciation is accurate… Why do you think the channel needs a different narrator?
I think that Salvador Dali would have loved Theo and his work. Seeing a strandbeest moving across the sand against a grey and moody sky is an image as unforgettable as the ants and 'melted clocks' in Dali's 'The Persistence of Memory'.
I used to share these videos with my Environmental Science students. Great example of both repurposing materials, as well as harnessing the power of the wind.
Repurposing means using discarded or already used materials, right? This looks like virgin plastic off the shelves to me, but I really do not know. It's a great school project though. I would like to see it made of bamboo and glass. Leave a non-toxic skeleton. PVC degrades into serious poison.
@@andypanda4756 I believe Jansen originally used repurposed plastic waste for his creations, however, as they gained in popularity and demand, he resorted to purchasing materials rather than recycling them. I agree that using plastic is not exactly environmentally friendly, but Jansen states that organic materials (such as bamboo) tend to rot over time, given the environment the "beasts" are found in.
@@danadagostino948 Soaking bamboo in borax solution gives us 15-20 years of working life here in tropical Thailand. Wood rots here faster than most places, I wouldn't be surprised if a Northern climate added some years to that; especially if kept dry. Has he mentioned how long the conduit pipe lasts on the beach before it needs replacing? I think it's electrical conduit at least. It can't last forever. My guess is they would have similar lifespans. The consistant size and weight of plastic pipe makes it super easy to work with. It would be difficult with the tapering width of bamboo. I just wish we used safer chemical stock to make plastics.
I bought his official kit for my son, a must to have. I'm full of admiration for Jansen. The potential opened by this artist is huge : next steps could be adding wind turbine generators to add light or cybernetics, or wind could be used to make music with self-configurating instruments using pipes, horns or percussions... its infinite...
Thank you so much for your video.I have enjoyed watching the Strandbeests for years. Yours is the first video I've seen that give's Theo and the Strandbeest's history. Thank you for all the lovely footage of the different beests.
his creatures would look amazing in a solarpunk story, like in a futuristic earth, this creatures would've become so advanced that they live by themselves on the beach and other windy areas
The man is a genius it's amazing how he thought of this way to move! They look beautiful, to think of it is first! but the effort to build them, is outstanding
I wonder if it is possible to make something like wind-powered walking bicycle using the existing sail principles aswell as techniques that would allow it to even go against wind
Now that is genius of a degree that few of us possess. I'll bet he could design a much better windmill. And if a miniature version of it would work, think how popular a toy it would be for kids. I can see many other geniuses being spurred on by this and having competitions for wind-powered contraptions of this sort.
How does he steer them if he was to let them go free? Is it from they stick close to the water and weave in and out of wet sand to dry sand and that’s what steers them up and down the beach from difference in friction?
I love it the genius of thoe Jansen works. But the AI voice creates an atmosphere of simplemindedness that makes me not finish watching instead I'll find his website.
Just goes to show how superior the human brain is compared to other animals. You'd have to be intelligent enough to grasp the concept of artistry, craftsmanship, mathematics, engineering and physics to build things like this.
I would realy like to know whether the wind-bottle-storage was also evolved, or if it was engeneerd by person. And I also woul like to have a video seen here that demonstrate how it functions ❤
Da Vinci would’ve loved this!
I agree!!!
He should he built most the design
Indeed he would!
We have these same things in Los Angeles beaches. The strandbeasts live in tents and have needles and trash surrounding them at all times
We have strandbeats in LosAngles beaches. They live in tents and are surrounded by needles and trash
If your using AI to write your script, atleast check it for mistakes. Some of the things beeing said are complete nonsense.
Bad guess. It's just translation-awkward.
I notised a lot of repetition like a ChatGPT would have been the author, though
I've noticed a lot of lazyness like that starting last year. People don't even proof-read subtitles of shorts now, just leaving em full of mistakes
Yeah U noticed this too. The whole script is ChatGPT

good luck on becoming a strandbeest!

Brilliant and uniquely Dutch. Masters of wind, sand and water.

Is it really so expensive to hire a voice actor to read the script? A human voice would add much feeling to this video.
???? What do you want?
The stilted AI voice is grating and unlovely.
I like the voice over/narrator, it sounds a quite natural British accent, maybe you were expecting a different accent?

This is real art, unfortunately most modern art museums do not appreciate it that way.

Nope. They're too busy being a money laundering scheme.
Nice to know this guy is still at it
Amazing & brings to mind Miyazaki.

It really is amazing.
Brilliant. I found him and his work online about 2001. I’m more impressed every time I see that he’s still working and creating more evolved beasts.
I am enchanted by this! It’s magical and so beautiful! Love his work! Leonardo is dancing in his afterlife.
These AI scripted videos are getting out of hand
yea
It would be a nightmare to get AI to generate these overlapping shapes in constant movement.

The work of Theo Jansen is amazing, but the AI narration here isn't great...
