- Does Michigan football have a quarterback problem? After all, JJ McCarthy leaves big shoes to fill after an undefeated National Championship season. McCarthy, Jim Harbaugh, Jesse Minter and almost 20 layers head to the NFL. Now, there is some talent returning to the 2024 Michigan Wolverines but a question remains at the most important position - quarterback.
Alex Orji and Jayden Denegal both saw a little action last season. Both seem to be the front runners for the QB1 job this year. Orji is more of a dual threat guy while Denegal is a pocket passer. We will tell you why Denegal may be the guy but Orji will also see the field. And, as spring football continues you won't believe who the coaches are comparing Denegal to! Tune in and find out.
We are a day closer to Purdue Basketball playing in the Final Four and we know Iowa's opponent Friday in the women's tournament. Good luck to the Big 10 teams!
Finally, since we are talking spring football, let's Power Rank the best football stadiums and atmospheres in the Big 10. Where do the new west coast teams fit in? It's all coming up on Locked on Big 10 with Craig Shemon.

The coliseum has more history than several of those schools u have ranked before the coli. Also the coliseum has been renovated, so it's not old.
Good Stuff! I think this MAY be an opportunity for a 2QB system at Michigan: Orji with a 1970s style offense, and Denegal with a 2023 Michigan offense.
Thanks for watching. Going to be very interesting how this unfolds in Ann Arbor!
The 70's offense was fun 👍. Campbell can run all sorts of neat stuff off those formations. Lots of Tight end action and misdirection. I like the way the Wolverines will work to find the weakness in the defensive scheme and break it down with motion and bunch formations.
Being a oline coach , coach Moore will lean on the run even more. Alex gives u that run pass option , he has a rockett arm. But its his accuracy thats a ???
It will likely be Orji, Tuttle hasnt practiced yet and will likely be too far behind. Theres also been no sign of them looking in the portal, likely because its about $1 million for a starting QB in the portal. I'm not nearly has concerned as most Michigan fans, they'll figure it out.
Yeah people need to take a chill and let stuff play out.
Maybe!
Michigan s cheap
Craig knows how football. Always enjoy your show boss
Thanks Steve! Means a lot!
@@LockedOnBIG10 obviously I’m a Michigan fan but you have been absolutely consistent for a long and definitely watch the games 🫡
Keep it up man not just for Michigan but for all your knowledge 💯 your success will continue
Going into the training camp I thought the same way as you but everything I've read has said Denegal hasn't played well. People allowed in practice are saying Orij and Davis Warren are the clear top two QB's and that Jaydn Davis the freshman has turned heads early on. I don't think Tuttle will play much on the field but will be a assistant coach adding another voice to a young QB room. My bet is Orji starts the season, either Warren or Denegal will get a chance if Orji struggles and by the end of the year don't be surprised if the staff turns to Davis to finish the season. Best case scenario is like the Alabama season last year Orji will be a huge playmaker like Jalen Milroe that becomes hard to beat with a great defense and dynamic QB.
Yeah it will all play out one way or the other. Thanks for watching!
the first thing harbaugh looks for is a QB that can make good pre-snap reads and put the offense into the right play based on what the defense shows. part of how mccarthy wowed people at the combine was how he talked about how to make pre-snap reads. and something that people seem to overlook is that orji is pretty smart. both of his older brothers played for vanderbilt and one of them plays for the saints at LB. orji clearly has a lot of football talent, but more significantly, he's smart enough to understand how to read defenses.
i'd also point out that kirk campbell is taking over at OC and he was the QB coach; he's already very familiar with what orji brings to the table, and if orji is deemed to be the guy who gives the team the best chance to win, the offensive scheme is going to designed to utilize orji's strengths. orji did a good job emulating milroe to prepare for alabama, and if alabama could devise a scheme that made milroe successful, i can't imagine campbell not being able to design a scheme that works for orji if orji wins the job.
All good points.
Well done👏
If he could read defenses, then why was he a 3 star with a 50% completion percentage in high school? I'm sorry, but there is literally nothing to indicate Orji will be up to the standard. Relying on him to take this massive jump would be a silly thing to do.
@@mattdrewdrumsGive Moore a call then because he obviously needs your genius ness 😂
@tomrockhill8634 I don't need to give him a call. I'm sure we'll be looking for a guy in the portal come fall because I trust Sherrone isn't a d*mbass. He just got dealt a bad hand because of our NIL situation, and because the first transfer period was in the midst of JJ making his decision and Harbaugh leaving.
Noooooo, they don't!
They don’t have a qb. Just a bunch of backups
They could have a legit run with only back up QBs though
@@Derpk-rt9by they would have to have another Joe Moore o-line with a super dominant run game and a defense on par with last season.
@titusprime5240 not necessarily, with the added competition and no divisions, I expect even the top teams to have 2 or more L's..put em in the big ten championship game and who knows 🤷♂️
😂 O.K. genius
A QB question mark? Absolutely.
A QB "problem"? No. Not yet.
Sounds like 3 or 4 good options that may or may not work out. Pretty unlikely none of them will.
For sure.
It all comes down to grinding drives and 3d down conversions. With that defense, they're not going to reinvent the Pass game😂. It won't be the PSU game but you'll be looking at 16-20 pass attempts TOPS. Moore would be an idiot for not using that interior O-line and stable of backs🐎
Yeah, during those suspension games it didn’t seem to me that Moore likes to pass much! Lol. You are probably right.
For Michigan to win the National Championship last year they needed a QB who could complete 70% of his passes
Denegal isn't as good a runner as McCarthy. JJ is faster than Denegal and Orji. Orjis longest run was like 15
Yrds. Everyone acts like he's so explosive
Like I’ve said, wouldn’t mind if they went triple option with Orji. For real. Air Force style!
Come on man
I've told buddies that they should go all Navy!!! They'd be a nightmare to defend and go for 80 % of the 4th downs👍
QB 1 Jack Tuttle
Really? Hmm.
@LockedOnBIG10 yes sir! Think about it.....Jack won the back up QB role last yr. Was one play away from leading Michigran. How is this over looked? Very talented player ! Live arm and very mobile and tough.
@@Preston_Prosperjack tuttle, when given a chance, looked like her could hardly read a defense and during certain games just looked juvenile. theres a reason hes going into his 7th season and hasnt gone anywhere. im not really sold on him, on the other hand denegal scored while having like 2 drives in the nebraska game. tuttle just doesnt sit right with me
@@MichiganManProductions but good enough to be one play away from leading one of Michigan's best teams.
Just stop it. You people say the same thing every year. Enough already.
I don’t recall saying this last year. They had a guy by the name of JJ McCarthy.
It is idi*tic that we haven't looked for a QB in the portal. It's going to cost us the season because every QB on the roster is below average (other than maybe Jadyn Davis, who's too young to start anyway). This idea that we're just going to run it and have no passing game is silly. If we pose no threat through the air, then our offense will be one of the worst in the B10, and that will more than likely keep us out of the CFP.
I will be interested to see if they hit the portal after spring.
@LockedOnBIG10 it's just too bad we couldn't snag a QB that could participate in both fall AND spring camp.
Not an informed take 🙄
@tomrockhill8634 Not an informed take? Lol what? Our QB room is definitely lacking. And, it would be a massive shame to let all of the talent on the team go to waste because they couldn't land a decent QB in the portal.
I don't see you giving any legit reasons you have concerns with the QB room. They're not worthy in your eyes because they don't come with 5 stars and a bunch of B.S. from the recruiting gurus. Believe it or not, Michigan has a reputation with NFL teams for finding and developing players for the league. They aren't interested in ESPN Hot takes. They're trying to build a Champion and develop solid young men for the NFL.
