How to Fix Tacoma Truck Brake Rattle Noise - Caliper Slide Pins Corroded!

- How to fix a Tacoma Truck Brake Rattle. The noise was becoming extremely annoying so I went into the brake caliper area to clean and lubricate the slide pins for this disc brake. I had already checked the heat shield and found that the dust shield was not the culprit. I did find that the pins on this truck were extremely corroded so I ended up ordering replacement slide pins, anti-rattle springs and clips to finally resolve the caliper brake rattle. Save yourself some money and do it yourself rather than take it to a mechanic or auto repair shop. Doing this kind of car repair is within the reach of most self reliant home mechanics. I did find that the calipers had a lot of rust, the rotors did around the vents as well. So I'll certainly be replacing those in the near future and do a full brake job. For now, the rattle noise is gone!

Hey buddy, was searching tons of video's and FOUND the problem in comments. Its the brake pads themselves, they oblong around the pin and any change of momentum they click/clunk against the play in the pin. The dust cover makes it louder and hard to diagnose. Change them, they are cheap and noise goes away. Just did it on mine, frickin had it on 2 different 3rd Gen's and made me sell the first one lol. Dealership wont find it.
I'll have to look into that I appreciate your feedback!
nice 👍🏽. thanks for the info bro, good work, 🙂.
I replaced mine with new pads and I’ve notice this noise after only thing I notice is I need to change is the clip thag holds the pads
Awesome, being dealing with this same problem for a few months. I'll be ordering up some new slide pins!
Thanks! I'm glad this was helpful!
You saved my life with this video!
Thanks! I'm glad it helpd!
Toyota only puts one spring on each caliper. I read online that installing anotjet spring on the top pin fixes it. I have a new set of springs here, and I'm going to try it tomorrow. The rattle is driving me insane!
Hope that works!
Did it work?
Thank you very much for this video! Im having the same issue and its driving me nuts. Jus checked and im missing the spring on my front right passenger side. Has to be it!
Good job finding that. Worth a shot!
@@ExtremeDIYGuy turns out the rattling was coming from my rear brake pads being loose. I didnt install the clips that came with the pads when I initially installed a while ago before winter. Never rattled till abt a month ago. I still had the clips in the garage. Installed them and poooof the rattle is gone. Such a good feeling eliminating an annoying sound like that!
I'm glad you got that solved!
@@alale923 rear pads? Tacoma has drums in the rear
What's cool is that the Taco brakes don't really wear much more even with those pins rusted. The only issue I have run into is the pistons and pad ears freezing up on a remaned caliper set. It's a great design for the rust belt.
I may end up replacing the entire calipers with zinc plated ones . Right now the calipers look like lumps of rust. but work perfectly still. Too much beach time I guess (Is there such a thing?).
@@ExtremeDIYGuy is the zinc plate caliper oem or another brand?
Off brand, definitely not OEM.

I like that front bumper hitch. Is that something you fabricated? Or does a company make them for the Tacoma's?
Thanks for any info.
Thanks for the sub and no I purchased it aftermarket.
Thanx
👍
my dr side cali is sticking pretty bad, gonna go head and guess ill be doin this tomorrow after work along with replacing the garbage 2 piece lug nuts
Hopefully that will help. It did with mine. I'll probably be doing a complete brake job soon. There's a ton of corrosion on the caliper and edges of the rotor.
How old were those pins? I own a 2006 Tacoma that has lived its whole life in the rustbelt with the orignal pins/brakes that haven't been serviced yet, one brake pad has uneven wear. Do you think I will be able to remove the over 15 year old rusted pins?
I would hit them with some break free spray first and let them soak in for a little bit of time than give it shot I don't see why they wouldn't come out.
@@ExtremeDIYGuy OK, Thanks for the reply.
Did the new pins work for you?
Yes the rattle is gone now!
Did you have metal to metal scratching sound when reversing?
I don't remember but don't think so.
Check rear drum brakes,,,
Its one of those parts you are better off to replace when doing brakes if rusted.
Absolutely!
Does anyone have a link or video to direct me for the noise... I recorded a noise from my 4runner and I hope it's just these pins. I certainly didn't replace them last month when I replaced my rotors and pads.
I don't have any additional videos, hopefully someone else can point you in the right direction.
@@ExtremeDIYGuy I figured it out. It was my anti rattle / pad joiners. Thank you for the reply.
@@ohlone209 No worries, glad you found it, I usually put some hi heat grease on the back of the pads to help with that.
Did the rattle noise stop when you pressed the brakes?
Yes it did.
The new caliper pins are gonna last you maybe a few more months of road salt lol.
It's been 2 1/2 years and plenty of beach trips, they're still going strong!
And How was the noise ??? A click ??
More like a rattling (multiple clicks) noise
3:30 .. dang !!!! All that banging n not even a spit 2 lubricate 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👎
Busted! Lol
