Sorry no plans - I came up with the design myself after Considered the amount of money I had ,air flow for cooling and heating plus made sure all the plumbing ran through the middle of the house under the steps that way we could easily access it if need be ....It was just my husband and son in law that dried it in in less than 2 wks and we ran ele and water on week end then lived in it to cash flow everything else =) I have pics on my face book if you would like to see it ....

I would be pressed to draw the plans, develop a material list and lay out the site in two weeks time for a basic framed dwelling.
Don't think "Ozark's" comment is the norm.
I think most of these people are on my Tribes land anyways...."Shoo!".
Well, maybe you can stay Zack.

***** My husband and son in law are/were framers so they put the list together and ordered from one place so it would make it possible for my husband to got a contractors discount ....They would bring it out in stages ..

Robert Tayrien Truth is we had it framed and roofed in 8 days and had to wait a cpl days for windows to show up and STILL had it done in a 2 weeks =) That was only 2 men...It can be done if you put your mind to it

LOVE this!!!! were in our 17th month off grid... were a family of 9 (6 still at home) and we jumped off grid after selling everything into tents and built in cash... were still building but heading toward our second winter in our debt free home :( and by not just telling our kids to go for their dreams but SHOWING them how, 2 of ours have also begun thier off grid building journey. Our 19 year old has nearly finished his house and our 18 year old is about 1/3 done on hers.... in cash..... from service industry teen age jobs :) it can be done, you just gotta want it bad enough. our motto is "Short term discomfort for long term gains"
keep up the great work and awesome videos.... you inspire me so much!
psssst....Jaimie if you ever have. a spare moment... I know I speak for many of us women hmestead/off gridders.... I'd live to see more videos from you or.... a book? I've read everything you've written and you are such a beacon of encouragement. ... hugs

A great way for families to test stress levels is everyone giving up Sugar. If you can do that, then give up caffeine. Still good? Give up internet and do your laundry by hand. If you are still married and not jailed or in therapy, you have a good chance of making it work. Don't worry, you can have your coffee and tea back.

Such a good video! We are in the process of fixing our house to sell. We will pay off what debt we have left and then start looking for property. That means we will more than likely be living in a transitional house until we find land.
We have 8 children but 3 are adults now. We are so lucky that they all have the same mindset we do and will be moving on our property with us. What a blessing!
We may not end up as off the grid as y'all are, but thank you for the encouragement to continue on the journey God has us on!

PREACH!!! I loved your "Office Space" and Frontier House references. I've watched Frontier House a couple of times and I loved it. You are right about taking a teenager and throwing him into a situation he isn't used to. It's easier to do it when the kids are little. We're working on relocating while the littles are still, well. little. I love all of your videos. This is my favorite thing to watch, as you are inspiring me and my husband to go even more simple and we hope to join you one day on our own homestead.

I agree with all you have shared. And while the idea seems appealing to me/us, I have learned over the years for us, what works is "Bloom where you are planted". Such as the Dervae's have done in California on their 1/3 rd of an acre (Urban Homesteaders). We have been able to continuously modify how we do things and how we live. For us, we homeschooled our children all the way through high school; Learned to garden (which included creatively taking Master Gardening classes in our community together as my daughters were entering their teen years); We have enjoyed learning to do some canning with a friend. And learning how to build our food pantry with the goals to shop from our food storage, and not from pay check to pay check (which has been saving us money! Especially as we learn to do more and more things from scratch). We also are trying to heat our home exclusively with wood this year, and learning about things we need to do and think about to be successful with this. Plus we are currently researching and learning all we can about raising chickens and discerning the kind of chicken set up would serve us best where we live, and other details. This year we are increasing our garden with goals to can more foods. We also have been working toward a Zero Waste Home, thus reducing trash and thinking through more of what we do and don't buy. We learn together in this route and it has been a gentle path for us that fits well. As we contemplate if someday do we want to be more dramatic as your family has, in the mean time, we just keep gleaning from folks like you, and grow in the idea at a comfortable pace for our family :) Our children are adults, one child married and moved away now, so considering how much we want to take on is a serious consideration in transitional stages of life. Thanks for all you have been sharing in your journey. :)

We are in the process, from the ground up hoping by next fall to be ready to move in. It does take $$$ and a lot of very hard work, not for the faint hearted that is for sure. But oh what a wonderful reward each callous and sore muscle is. Freedom...well as much as we can have ;DThis is a great video Zac you nailed it, great advice!Attitude for sure !

Me and my wife really enjoy all your shows and have actually gave up our home and have started converting a 12ftx32ft lofted barn shed into a small 2 bedroom 1 bath tiny house we are on the grid tho and working our way to living a simple life and looking into a small piece of land and moving toward a more off grid lifestyle with our 4 kids been hard at times so far but rewarding as well but to the point your family inspired our family to work toward a simpler way of life

He has a long list of questions to answer in this series. A few extra things I was wondering is, and he might cover it later, were... Pre fab house? Meaning Modular? Where did you buy the modular? Best price? Things to look for? Pros and cons of a modular? Land cost range(2k-5 k an acre) etc...those details.

I love this. Been watching Zach's New2Torah series and curiously looked up this. Unfortunately I have a husband who proclaims he is a "city boy"...even thought he was raised in a REALLY small po-dunk town. We moved into the Hocking HIlls of Ohio, on 13 acres. If I want to get back to the 'basics it will all be on me...but I might just adapt this as much as I physically can.
Thanks for sharing Zach and Jamie!

  • @oldmanpatriot1490
    @oldmanpatriot1490 7 років тому

This is a great video but a little misleading in one aspect. I refer to the old saying "it takes money to make money" We have wanted a farm for quite some time. We had a chance to buy 10 acres before we bought our current home and hind sight being 20/20 we should have jumped on that, but because the place would have added an hour onto my drive to work every day, It just wasnt the cards back then. Now that I am no longer working, we are ready for a homestead and got preapproved from the bank to buy if we sell our current home. Glad I insisted on buying cheap and fixing up because now we have equity. But here is where I think this video shades some reality. The bank wont loan for a farm or farmette without a house on it in our area. To much risk for the bank. A bank will also not loan to buy a money making farm. At least not for us. Now my wife could quit her job, sell everything we own and probably buy a nice chunk of property in MO but we wouldn't have the means to build a house. at least not as quick as 10 months like you did. We would have to go to work in the new area to make money to afford materials, tools and what have you. Not to mention pay property taxes while building. That is a hug risk to take and we are not that much of risk takers. Giving up a 6 figure salary for a very risky endeavor is not very smart in my opinion. to many risk factors on the negative side of the pros and cons list. So we did our thing by paying down debt on a 10 year plan. the first year we knocked 3 years off that debt and its been going down ever since. finally we got preapproved like I stated, and we could wait even longer to raise the amount of land we can buy, because each year our debt gets less and less and the bank will loan us more and more. But we see no reason to wait. Between 5 and 10 acres should be enough, although I would love to have more and with the way things are going in DC, we think waiting is even a greater risk and want our homestead before things crash. To have my wife keep her career and minimize the risk of defaulting on our homestead and having me work the homestead, we need a place we can move straight into that's already built. Acreage is much more expensive where we live also and that's another factor to consider. Are you willing to up root everything and move to a different state or stay where your roots are? for us its the latter but I wouldn't mind MO. Beautiful land down there. But really sitting down and figuring everything you want out is really key. We dont want to live off grid. At least not right now. We have our list of things we can live with and things we cant live without. Being honest with your spouse is the most important thing anyone could do. We all sacrifice in marriage but when it comes to something of this magnitude, both people need to know what they are getting into to be happy.
