In a game that contains some of the hardest bosses in any RPG, this is the guy that caused me to hate life. There were several times when I was tempted to throw down the controller and declare Trumpeter to be flat-out impossible. He could kill my guys willy-nilly, and any time I managed to inflict significant damage on him, he would heal to full! The turning point came when I realized that him healing to full showed me how many hit points he started with. That gave me a goal to hit. After that, I made a party of magic-focused demons that all had extremely damaging single-target magical skills (wind cutter in particular), and offensive buffs and debuffs. I bided my time by buffing and debuffing until he used his holy melody once. After that, I and my demons went all-out and nuked him into oblivion before he could use it a second time. An immensely satisfying kill. ^_^
+Hylian Link (Legend) Indeed it is. It's truly an experience like no other, particularly on hard mode (which is the difficulty that I feel it's meant to be played on). If you get into the mood, it becomes extremely immersive; you really feel like you've been dropped into a merciless kill-or-be-killed world of demons. You start out with absolutely nothing, have to scrape and claw for every bit of progress, and take whatever advantage is available to you. But if you persist long enough, if you learn to adapt to the world's cruelty and gain the power to both survive and thrive through sheer guile and determination... you'll truly become a reaper of souls. ^_^ Nocturne. Hard to play, but so freaking satisfying to conquer.
***** I'm a filthy casual, I always play SMT on the easiest difficulties ;-;. I enjoy the story and the gameplay but I hate having to try fights over and over again.
+Jamison David Well the strategy is to just give yourself a demon who is an element magnet: Slapping on Null/Drain Fire, Ice, Elec, and Force eats up Trumpeter's turns. This does catch you off guard during the first fight due to the press turn countdown atop trying to keep your party healed. When I played this game years ago, I had a similar problem until I tried getting demons who can eat up Press Turns.
From what I can tell by watching the video (and getting my own arse whupped by Trumpeter), the Trumpeter heals the weakest demon, whether it be one of your characters or himself. If you have your entire party healed completely by the time he sounds that Holy Melody, he will heal himself. Hence, why MasterLL didn't use any moves like Mediarahan or Prayer. The same also applies when he uses Evil Melody: it will instantly kill the weakest demon (except himself), regardless of resistances.
That debilitate really breaks the difficulty of this boss so much, After debilitating him 4x and tarukaja-ing my party twice, I killed him in turn 3 with the bully of my Wu-kong n demi-fiend focused attack :o (He didn't even have the time to cast the dark melody), which kinda disappointed me :( this is in Hard diff. and maybe I'm just lucky he didn't use dekaja/dekunda yet :v Now if only there's a heat riser/Charge-like skill... ^^
TylightDark this is far too late to reply but I think he meant like a reverse debilitate on the party, a spell that puts up attack, Defense and evade for the whole party
The first time I ever fought this boss I ran into him by accident with depleted stats and I cried when I beat him. It was one of those surreal moments that makes playing this game so gratifying.
LL I have to thank you because I was not aware that the third book was out now. I quite enjoy this series so far. Now I have two books to look for, that one and the sixth book to the Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy Trilogy
Hopefully this will help you, this is an old topic discussion about my Daisoujou, not sure if it is still viable or helpful. www.gamefaqs.com/boards/582958-shin-megami-tensei-nocturne/64977871
I saw a guy trivialising Trumpeter by letting Evil Melody killing one of the guy's demons and then reviving the dead demon (not to full), attacking Trumpeter with just 3 characters for a while and only summoning the other demon back on the turn immediately before Trumpeter used Holy Melody.
I had to beat this boss twice because after I beat Trumpeter, I was on my way back to Ginza to save. But what ended up happening was in one of the fights on my way back, an Archangel used Hama on me and killed me. And that really ticked me off. But either way, good battle with Trumpeter. MasterLL. :)
Nicely done LL! I killed this sausage on my third attempt. Ironically I didn't realize that his Trumpet would heal the weakest member on the battlefield so I ended up doing this the long way :( My strategy was completely different (That's why I love this game, different methods to tackle these beasties). I used Garuda and applied 2 Fog Breath's to lower the bosses accuracy, 2 Taunts to lower the bosses Defence. My Hell Biker's AoE + Dekaja negated any buffs the boss gained.
Just beat him yesterday. I was going to just keep spamming makajaka and tarukaja until I could do enough damage to him in a few turns but he kept healing and using delays, which always pissed me off. I hate to say this, but I ended up biting the bullet and finding the strategy of using your low health demon for his evil and holy melodies. Even still, brutal fight. I probably would’ve never guessed that method.
the funniest thing is i saw guide to this boss by an accident and that he uses melodies, but i was so excited that i have completely forgotten about it, what's the funniest i defeated him before he used evil melody on normal
It's actually pretty funny, if you refuse to stay when prompted, you are forced to fight the fiend anyway, but if you say no when asked if you're sure, you'll be allowed to skip the fight.
Like you I also had Daisoujou in my party who was mainly standing by for Prayer heals, pass turns or for Samarecarm should the boss one-shot any party members. From there I had my MC use Makajam to increase my magic and just unload with all magic based attacks. Garuda spammed Zandyne and MC spammed Hellfire :) Good times! Wish I had Debilatate, how the heck did you get your Daisoujou to learn that o.O?
*This* is the boss that made me Rage Quit Nocturne (I never even beat the game because of him). Simply because, without fail, he would always target my MC with his insta-kill move. :/ Nocturne is still one of my all-time favortie games, but I utterly *loathe* Trumpeter.
o.o i got fed up with it after dieing like 4 times agenst him so i just used this party Me lv:63 resist phys weak magic skills: Focus, might, makakaja, blight, iron claw, retaliate, endure, fire drain. @MasterLL As you might know by now Nocturne favors physical attacks so i'd rather stick with phys whatever is the spec of the demon. However there are powerful magic spells, for example my Bishamon has Prominence+fire boost and it hits for over 1k in a random battle (on one target). And I know this does not belong here but megido spells are soooooo not worth it.
One thing that gets a lot of people on this fight is the fact that the trumpet kills the person with the lowest *percent* hp.. I had a lot of trouble with him so I read a walkthrough and it said the trumpet would kill the person with the lowest hp..and even following that advice, it kept killing the MC for me even though he had like 200 more hp than everyone else. The reason I think I kept dying it is if everyone is at 100% hp, I think it just picks the first person, which is the MC..
as long and boring as many will find it, i find that draining bosses of their mp is the best way to beat them. there are some however that are too impractical to drain (reason bosses, beelzebub, metatron, lucifer and kagutsuchi and physical based bosses, unless of course your doing it for a heal) once they have no mp, they are a joke. they become nothing more than damage sponges.
Quitted the game because of this boss yesterday. Worst part isn't even necessarily Evil Melody itself, but how vague it is. Some people say he uses it on his 4th turn, some say he uses it on his 8th, and what exactly constitutes as a turn here? Every single action he takes, so like he uses 2 turns every time? Or like literally just every time he's on? And does his initial casting of Holy Melody count as a turn? Besides that, it's also a pain in the ass to focus on the battle AND keep track of how many turns went by.
Divine Shot is awesome though. I wouldn't replace it with anything other than "Spiral Viper" or "Freikugel" for the sheer damage unto bosses and even regular battles. Still, hellfire at this stage of the game isn't good because it's only medium level damage, and not heavy or even mega damage like the other 4 spells. It's like the developers WANT you to use Surt for fire damage and thus give you only bad fire options (Excepe Magma Axis) >_>
Damn, in my case it was clutch af...when it casts the first evil melody, my mc had the highest hp, and he survived bcs of endure...and when trumpeter cast mabufudyne next, it missed :3 and in the next turn i shot him to oblivion with my team. Truly one of the hardest boss if you dont use a decent strategy--
The speech before the fight is the best and climactic scene till this moment of Nocturne (and one of the best in whole game). Trumpeter is just so pure out of the creepy part of christian religion (like paintings of skeletons in old churches), with chills down the spine. Hell (or heaven), love it! :)

Evil Melody: Goodbye, Amaterasu or Harlot!

To fuse any fiend you need a deathstone and the required demons
I saw a guy trivialising Trumpeter by letting Evil Melody killing one of the guy's demons and then reviving the dead demon (not to full), attacking Trumpeter with just 3 characters for a while and only summoning the other demon back on the turn immediately before Trumpeter used Holy Melody.
I think this guy had a pattern, its 2 signature attacks always targetted the character with less HP in the battle. He also shows his HP first!
I know this is old but Holy Melody targets who has the lowest health while Evil Melody targets whoever has the highest health.
