Great and well thought out changes to enhance the mix! I wonder why you don´t use a nice hardware set up on your mixbus. Especially the D.W. Fearn seems to be popular on many engineers mixbus for it´s color and high end. Is it for the Plugin Alliance marketing or do you really prefer digital in this scenario? Or do you let the mastering engineer do the final glue and excitement with his expansive gear?
@@ronson795 Thanks for the kind words and for the question. IDK if this made it to the final video presentation, but basically my main A/D converter was being serviced when I started this song, and I had a tight turnaround to deliver the mix so I had to sum internally and use plugins for mix bus. Had to move too fast to re-patch the mix bus, but that said, I love the Fearn EQ on my mix bus and use it often. Generally, I think it comes down to whatever I commit to at the beginning and what I "make decisions through" for lack of a better expression.
Loved it. Super well done and concise explanations on everything. Was the last fabfilter limiter just to get more level for client mix review? or was that on the print you sent to mastering?
@@easternsouvenirs thanks for watching. Yes, the FabFilter Pro L2 Limiter was just go get more level for the artist and label to listen to; what i send to mastering does not have that L2 printed on it, and i don't really "mix through it" just kinda turn it on at the end.
Justin thank you for all you do! Love the philosophical mixing videos too, I survived on them for about 6 months while driving around and delivering for Amazon. Not to mention the Mixcon vids. I really appreciate it so much You don’t even know!!!
I really like his intellectual, nearly scientific approach to the mix. The result being everything is logic (even in protools 😅) and everything makes perfect sense. Very unique. Love it. The exact opposite to people like eg Andy Johns, where everything is rock n roll and sucks and rules and in the end there is a great mix with the impression that he doesn’t know how he got there. At least feeling great all the time. Chris KNOWS what he is doing every single second of the process and this makes it real fun to listen to what he is saying. Because it makes sense.
Forget about the plugin settings and outboard gear, blah, blah, blah... with great mixers like this, it's all about prying into their mindset, understanding how they think and problem solve.
It’s tough to quantify, and something that’s obviously gonna vary track to track. What I can say is common is that I stop hearing the mix and start hearing the song; that’s a good indicator it’s done.
Oh geez, I would have to re-watch the video. I’m sure he opens it up and shows it. This is a plugin alliance, sponsored video, and it is one of the plugin alliance plugins he shows! If memory serves, I believe he was using the 9000 J because of the extended low end relative to the other SSL consoles they have emulated. But I could be mistaken! -Justin
I mix into the first bus compressor usually doing not that much gain reduction. I don't usually mix into the limiter or EQ which i put on 80% of the way through the mix
This mixing masterclas are pumps. You can do the next with the engeenier jasong goldenberg , with nba youngboy fish scale song showing mixing and master procest . He did an interview in insite the track ,insurance would do the mix masterclass
Either you’re the first person out of 33,000+ to notice, or it somehow got switched recently without anyone noticing. I don’t know but I’m guessing the latter. Thanks, fixed! -Justin
I have to like the song in order to mix it, I won’t mix hip hop or rap or modern style pop, as most is just absolute rubbish. The song in the video I wouldn’t waste the time on as it is rather boring, there’s nothing to grab me no energy. It’s like everything else around.
If you listen to the end result, you’ll be amazed. The final piece is so good. The rough mix was just that, little rough. I went and listened to the final and wow. Good work here Chris.

@@tabmixedit Thanks
What an intelligent, thoughtful and articulate guy. He might be the best production educator I've listened to. More of him please!
You know this is a good mix when it comes thru the phone speakers so loud , clear and full!!!
This guys level of communication is insane, I mean some of these adjectives to describe concepts and sound are unreal 🤯
Great run through:) Sohn’s first album is killer and timelessly beautiful.
The most educational hour I've had in a long, long time. Thanks so such.
Awesome. Thank you

Absolutely fantastic presenter voice to music volume ratio. I always like the Music to be louder than the presenters voice, THANK YOU GUYS!!!!
Son is a great artist and with Chris' art it's a marriage destined for the charts
Excellent explanations and descriptions of thought processes. Thank you
What a pro. Super clear and informative, and SOHN rules too. Listen to his music if you don't know this yet...

Thx for the video!
Cool mix
I have a question. How do you know when your done with the mix and are ready for mastering? Is there some type of guide on this topic?
It’s tough to quantify, and something that’s obviously gonna vary track to track. What I can say is common is that I stop hearing the mix and start hearing the song; that’s a good indicator it’s done.
@@tabmixedit thank you so much for your reply!!. that helps
what plugin is on every group, I can see a "b". On the drum group it is inserted before the Standard Clip.
Brainworx console strip! One of the bx_console SSLs he mentions.

Do you find the wider bass looses its power in mono playback?
It depends on how it's handled. Not necessarily. But it could. Listen and adjust accordingly! :-)

What’s the D on that Vocal Grp?
im curious to know if you were mixing INTO those mixbus plugins, or did you mix first, then enhance with those after?

I hate this analog/digital debate. Just mix. There is no war, and no...you dont need analog.

This guy just rattled off 60 plugins and also outboard. Love the technique but damn.
he was using a ton of protools default plug tho...
how beautiful world would be with no autotune and pitch shifter.
i love the sound of autotune because of songs like blood on the leaves ua-cam.com/video/KXUqSfeekz0/v-deo.html

So you are telling us you are not a professional and you like to share your worthless yet negative opinions
Can anyone share the rack brand/model he is using ?
The big racks are Kent Custom cases.

@@tabmixedit sorry to bother you again. Are the big racks 16U or 18U tall? Thank you for making this video 🎉
