    I saw this lecture when I had cold and wanted to relax by watching some UA-cam videos at October last year. I can say now, a few months later, that it completely changed the way I was creating music and I would even say it changed my life little bit. I'm constantly coming back and watching few bits of this amazing lecture. I even screened his whole session for analysis how I can use it to improve my mixing. Absolutely love this.

    I don't understand the criticism of this talk. No he didn't get technical, but what he did do was expand upon his mixing philosophy. Namely that mixing is about feeling, not sonic technicality. Another valuable lesson is to capture the best recordings possible, and leave as little as possible to the mix process.
    Tony lives and breathes mixing, I mean the man can do it in his head! If you want to mix like him, you have to apply that same dedication.

    • @SubscribersWithoutAnySubscribe
      @SubscribersWithoutAnySubscribe 4 роки тому +2

      The fact that mixing involves feeling does not exclude the fact that it's also about sonic technicality. And actually, if you group a whole bunch of professionally mixed songs together you will notice that they have something in common when compared to amateur mixes. They are more balanced. Balancing a mix involves a lot of sonic technicalities, and there are plenty of mixing classes that involve sharing those technicalities.

      @@SubscribersWithoutAnySubscribe All of mixing involves a lot of technicalities, but again he wasnt here to explain how a compressor or EQ works, he was explaining his philosophy behind mixing which is something new engineers need to develop. A better feeling record will always sound better than a technically better record, period. That's why AI hasn't taken over the mixing industry.

    • @SubscribersWithoutAnySubscribe
      @SubscribersWithoutAnySubscribe 3 роки тому +1

      @@JakeLewisReal Yea I mean I don't agree with what the OP called the criticism of this talk, I was just pointing out that the statement "mixing is about feeling, not sonic technicality" is patently false. I don't think that's an accurate summary of what Tony Maserati or any industry mixer believes. Also your conceptual separation of 'feeling' and 'balance' is highly inaccurate, balance is a big part of what determines a mix's feeling. Otherwise you wouldn't need mixers, you'd just leave it to the composer to 'feel it out'. What separates composers from mixers is not their vision of the song - the mixer largely caters to what the composer wants - what separates them is the mixer's ability to achieve that vision, and much of that is technical.

EDIT: this is such a great presentation btw. people who take issue with it are pretty ridiculous tbh. and that's coming from someone whose initial comment was "gimme Twice." He let everyone in on his driving philosophies and mindset. If you need specific fader and knob moves, you're missing the entire point. By and large, what I want from a presentation by a master is their mindset. Here and there, a little trick is nice but he's here to let you in on what he deems important. He literally has content doing exactly what people are saying they want. This content complements those things perfectly. What more could you ask for from a guy like this? On top of all that, unless you're mcdsp, you didn't even pay for this lol. tf is happening

    Firstly, thank you to all the creators and facilitators for organizing, presenting and making these talks and making them available for free, it is fantastic work you are doing for us all. The Bob Power talk is fantastic, very helpful and inspiring. However, regarding this talk - as someone learning mixing and production, to spend over 30 mins talking about your friend's piece of kit, especially at a price many of us can't afford, was not helpful. Many of us are on a very tight budget and working on analog gear would be amazing, but is not possible so we have to work in the box. Also, although he certainly has tons of experience and helps create some excellent quality songs, to speak about being sent songs that are almost finished already is more mastering than mixing. I'm sure he has much experience to share that this talk didn't highlight, but again, the focus here was much more mastering than a mixing masterclass as the title would suggest. I'm not a hater, I just feel it's important to give honest feedback, not biased due to the speaker's credentials. Thanks again guys. Love & Music...

    12:00 I think this shows that he is absolutely knowing what he is talking about, but that he also overestimates the expertise of audiences. I call this the "math teacher phenomenon". He simply knows so much that he cannot get into the mind of the average listener. Like this math teacher in school, who looked at you like you're dumb because you didn't get the Pythagorean theorem immediately. 😂No average music listener does actually recognize the nuances in kick drum sampling and mixing. They can tell if it fits in the mix, but they cannot tell more, nor do they care more. Still engaging talk so far.

    I do not agree with everything he said. For instance I don't think it's paramount to keep up with plugins. But I really got something from this speech, which I cannot say about every speech, even if other speeches are a lot more detailed on what kind of frequencies do what for them and how they eq or when they compress. In a way it's a liberating speech and helps you visualize music like a child again. It's really important to really understand and picture the emotion and work in broad strokes first. That's great advice.

    im sorry but I think its really important to understand what the singer is saying if you gonna be the last person putting your hands on their material before mastering. For example theres a error on her vocal track where she says; " No me quedan fuerza..." Well ...she should said "fuerzas" with "s" at the end. To explain you a little bit better .."Fuerza" no "s" means more like ..muscle strength . Fuerzas..with "s" ...means courage. And since she's singing in Spanish who you think its gonna be number one audience? Now a lot of you that dont understand what she's singing will let it pass not knowing what went wrong and probably get call out at the end even tho its not your fault since you only mixing not recording or vocal couching. Now another point is ...in some songs theres some instances where the lyrics can inspire you to make some drastic changes . For example a verse that ends saying the word "empty "....a long reverb decay ...or a well pronounced delay effect will give more impact to that word and so on. So bottom line ...its really important to know and understand what the singer is really saying.

    • @kezhintonmusic
      @kezhintonmusic 3 роки тому

      Yes I totally agree with you on this point - as you said, not just to spot errors but to accentuate the feeling of the lyrics. I do realize that if someone's working on a lot of projects on a tight schedule and unfamiliar with the language, it might not always be possible, but for me (vocal) music is about the emotion , the lyrics and what the artist is expressing and that should be what your job is about prioritizing, so to just say 'I don't need to know what she's saying' is missing a massive part of the whole picture in my opinion! Good point well made.

      @@McDSPTV I'm not trying to discredit the APB but I'm confused how you can call something a 'tube limiter' when there's not a single tube in the box? From my understanding, it's an algorithm and 'some' analog components.

      Damien Lewis typically the bigger the box and power supply, the bigger the processor allowing for more algorithms, which results in deeper better sound quality.
