What I particularly like about the waterborne sand technique is that there's no airborne silica dust.
If you could fix attach the sand hopper to the washer, the vibration would ensure a more consistent flow of sand both from the slump cone and the movement around the inlet. Standing them on the same plank of wood may do it Bob.
love the comparison and that with a simple attachment you got a sand blaster. sorry if this is irrelevant, but there's probably a thumb print on the camera lens, it's just distracting me 😂
Robert Cut a hole in the bag (just big enough)and put the spike in it ,save the mess of pouring it into the bucket and it’ll keep it dry . Love the review of which medium to use 👍
Nothing gives a shine like blasting with crushed walnut shell
Simply brilliant, just what we like.
Great work, thanks for your videos much appreciated.
For a better solids silo, try a tall, rectangular (nit square) cross-section box with a 60 degree (minimum) pyramid bottom. This discourages 'rat-holing' and bridging. From industrial experience.
In addition to this attachment, if you were to create a trough for putting parts into with a pipe going back to a water return, and on its way, run it through a cyclonic water filter, you could return the medium back to a separate tank from the water for re-use. Therefore saving your medium. When the water hits the cyclonic filter, the medium would go down the way and the water would go straight through.
I’ve wanted someone to do this for so long!
Ah I thought you were going to show the surface finish. That’s one of the reasons for different media.
If I remember correctly I was going to try walnut shell to use on my alloy wheels . I think that's £20/30 for 25k
What I would really REALLY like to see, is you inventing a way to recirculate the sand in a cabin sandblaster while wet. :-)
In the States, there was a company marketing something similar that used sodium bicarbonate for grit. There was a need to decontaminate the surfaces before re-treating, but the cost was said to be very low. Enjoyed your comparison. Your indoor lab shot camera lens is slightly fogged over the last several videos -- FYI. Seems to be getting worse.
it is - but I do the videos ahead so I only noticed a few videos ago - so it is now cleaned but you won't see that until a video or two - sorry
@@ThinkingandTinkering Still great videos. I really like this particular project.
The black grit can be carborundum like you said, but it can also be crushed up slag from iron smelting, I seem to recall reading somewhere that they use crushed slag for media blasting...
I'm pretty sure you will know this but professional grit blasting uses garnet grit in various grades. Generally to remove industrial paint for inspection purposes or rust and crud. They garnet is often supplied in bulk bags of the cubic metre size.
Garnet is often used in blasting cabinets for its bite and durability.
You may also be interested in soda blasting or even laser rust removal processes which is fascinating.
Garnet runs at about £30 / 25Kg
@@totherarf yep it's not cheap but tons of it gets used in industrial settings. Not pleasant in one's eyes either.
Looks like a blast!
Good video! Only issue is they use a LOT of water if you're on a water meter! Not sure how much or what cost aspect that would play as quite considerable I'd imagine but I can't be sure?
Cheers from London 👍🏴🇬🇧
Fantastic tip, Rob
Have you looked into a web blast cabinet? you convert a typical sandblast cabinet to wet. That way best of both worlds and it recycles the sand I believe. Worth a look mate!!
great video rob cheers for that test .... use full to know paving sand is good for this application
Pro Tip - please clean the camera lens - there has been something blurring the last 3 videos. :-) Hopefully these are not filmed too far in advance. Love your content - keep it up.
may I suggest a backpack with the sand in it and the tube flowing downwards from your back or side. that way the sand doesnt get wet and you're not tied down to a bucket, Harborfrieght, (not sure if you have that in the UK), sells a 4 gallon backpack insecticide sprayer you could retrofit with the tube to pull the sand
I bought some aluminum oxide that looked just like that. I found the oxide quite useful to make home made ceramics, binding it with sodium silicate.
Hi robert..im not sure about over where you are but we have access to garnet and ilmenite here in oz..glass medium is not allowed outside a blast cabinet here last i heard..love your content mate, thankyou
Grab a flat pan with a 4 inch rim to trap your medium. I love it 😀
Was there a difference in the grit sizes to explain the rate of use or was the expensive stuff significantly heavier per unit volume?
this is very informative. How about time efficiency?
it's takes about the same time whatever grit is used to be honest
@@ThinkingandTinkering Than ... it's a no brainer! Thanks.
Would this be as effective in cleaning granite sets and kerb stones?
it is called copper slag (leaves a courser finish- i don't mind) in kanada friend...Yah bless...doug
Use Karcher to clean out patio sand....do sandblasting on patio...let sand dry...sweep into patio gaps...2 birds with 1 stone, or bag of sand in this case...no waste!!!
Apologies for an off topic comment but are you aware the working ink website is really slow to load and 'shop' wouldn't load after 5 minutes. I was curious about pricing and you are probably losing possible sales! Keep up the great videos!
If all you want is to remove the rust this works great but if you planned to put a coating or two part ceramic on your part you will find the bloom of rust won't let it stick to the coating
.....but Rob's a chemist and probably ahead on these things .
You may not have noticed it but the sand looked to be having a non consistent feed!
Was there a problem with the feed, or was it just one of those things?
Eather way turning a jet washer into a sandblaster is Awesome ;0)
Please clean you're camera lens
Does anybody have a link to the Karcher sandblasting attachment?
A big box with wire mesh walls would contain the medium and sud, maybe it could be washed after and be reused a couple of times and you could collect the waste instead of it going into the sewer
The black stuff is a carborundum the Robert. Man made abrasive made in electric kilns, that is why price is high. Very abrasive stuff that is rough on anything.
Have you been sand blasting your camera lens, Rob? You've been a bit misty in the last few videos😁
I'm a little curious about what motor & battery you're going to put on it?
Forklift! 😂
How about doing it in a kiddies paddling pool easy to collect and less cleaning up dry in which ever method u chose.
Why not make a solar oven to dry the medium?
The chapter of sand blasting is a never ending story.
Many systems was and are there ... Specially in muld / castain factories.
I seen one where steel grid was mecanical wise gone to the surface - too difficult to explain here.
I beleve the expensive stuff was copper slake, been used in dockyards for blasing ships. - Been done in the past with press air, very expensive and even more dusty. As far as I know not allowed anymore.
Than I seen for aircrafts rotating heads spray water under 300 bar pressure to the (aluminium???) surface to remove the paint.
However: I think if you can get more rough builder sand abt 2 mm or higher you should have more success. - But don't ask me where you can get it!
I buy my angle grinder wire wheels from Lidl..... I'm still on my first for £4.
Nice one!
The sand blaster will get into small concave features which would be difficult to reach with a wire wheel. I'm addicted to Lidl and Aldi tools and supplies and have their wire wheels.
@@andybaker2443 That's true though O do tend to remain drier.
Dear Mr. Robert,
Could you please try to create hydrogen gas and multiwalled carbon nanotubes by microwaving plastic, HDPE? Apparently, 1g of it produces about a litre of H2, and within minutes!
whaaaaat?
@@mamupelu565 Yep. Read it in Nature catalysis or in ResearchGate: "Microwave-initiated catalytic deconstruction of plastic waste into hydrogen and high-value carbons"
Unlimited powuuuuh
..... just say NO, kids!!
@@gregtaylor6146 whaaat?
@@emel60 - .... to the drugs.
It looks like water is getting in the tube. Maybe try more horizontal?
What does one of those things do to rust
Did you watch the video? It blasts it off!!!
@@recumbentrocks2929 that was oil an paint not rust
sand is free if you go to the beach
electric rotating drum filled with sand ?
"Karacher?' Just sound it out , k a r c h e r . There is only one A. Just Archer with a K in front. German pronunciation....... Kercher.
corona hairstyle, like us all :P
I've kind of let it grow on top but I do the sides starting with grade 2 at the ears and working up to grade 4 at the parting. Easy! 👍😅
Where did all that sand and glass go? In your environment? Who will clean that then?
ps: your cameralens is kind of dirty, there is a huge foggy spot in your last 3 videos.
.....those sands of the Sahara must be hell .
I think your lab´s lenses camera are dirt.
it is - but I do the videos ahead so I only noticed a few videos ago - so it is now cleaned but you won't see that until a video or two - sorry
Why not just gu down your local beach and have a dig, it's free?
Free .... but not the same ;0)
Only free if you don’t get caught, otherwise a £1,000 fine in the UK
@@RandomSmith Realistically it is not going to happen ...... unless you do it commercially ;0)
@@RandomSmith Just for a bit of sand, well every day's a school day.
That'll be theft, but then your type aren't overly bothered about tiny details like criminality?
