Why does this video have even 1 dislike? I work on engines a lot and a suggestion for parts cleaning that is cheap and nontoxic is a gem!
because youtube overlords dont like self reliance
My dad always saved every nut bolt and washer from anything he disassembled and stored them in trays with a light coat of oil... never needed to buy any nuts bolts or washers for anything he put together. We live in a far too “throw away” society today but I’m following his footsteps and it’s saved me lots of money and time. 👍🏼
same. When hard rubbish collection day came around ot was Christmas for him and hours of disassembly for us kids.
I'm the same way at work. It feels wrong to throw away something that I will need 2 years down the line!
This is good to a point. If the fastener has been abused in its previous life, there's a chance it could fail.
@@johndias6614 yes agreed, I wouldn’t use second hand fasteners on something critical but for general ‘bolting things together’ it saves money and time 👍🏼
I learn something every time I come here, and I come here every time you post. Keep it up!
Remember to protect your freshly cleaned items as they will rust up really quickly.Oil etc
And wash off the salt+vinegar cleaning solution. As much as it attacks rust, given time it will promote creation of more rust if not removed.
Oh yeah, the best protectant I've found is WD40 or the Blaster penetrating catalyst stuff.
wood ash is a good one for final polish - great stuff wood ash, use it for loads of things
When I'm panning for gold I use a surfacter to break the water tension because believe it or not gold floats! So I've found along with a lot of other people if you use dishwasher liquid it doesn't sud up as much as washing up liquid and you can see what's in your pan without bubbles. I was thinking you probably won't need to use the alcohol which is easier for people who can't get a hold of if like me.
I remember 25 years ago being in middle school art class and listening to a *science* teacher talk to the art teacher about how the pennies they were using in a buoyancy experiment were all white and didn't get clean when she soaked them in water. I couldn't believe my 13 year old ears that the *science* teacher didn't realize that the pennies had oxidized.
I told her to soak them briefly in salt and vinegar and then wipe them off and that they'd come out with a mirror finish.
I've got an old rock tumbler that I want to try this out on. I cleaned out rust inside a motorcycle fuel tank once by loading it with some gravel, wrapping it up in cushions, and tumbling it in my clothes dryer for a couple hours. Removed almost all the rust. I was able to use a lot less chemical treatment as a result. :)
I restore an antique dresser last year, it has steel handles and mirror clips, all well rusted. A 48 hour soak in neat vinegar took off enough rust to leave a nice antique patina. A light coat of clear, matt varnish protects from further deterioration.
Nice recipe. Gonna use it Thanks! I wanted to share back mine. Maybe someone is already doing it, but i think my recipe is unique. I'm using rusty bits like you have there, or metal filings dropped into a large bottle of vinegar. Let it sit a few days before ready to use. When you are ready to stain some wood add one package of cherry koolaid. No sugar, just the packet. That's IT! It makes a wonderful and cheap stain for outdoor wood, and actually gets better with age in some cases. I've experimented with adding old coffee grounds to throw color off and add some oils.
Be careful when you go against the system, love your videos, new suscriber
I spray brake cleaner on steel metal parts to clean them quick, it works fast, you should give it a go, you will do it that way from that day on, lol but I must say, that was a very nice job in doing it your way...
Very nice Rob, you are a master teacher
Top quality again Rob. Zirconium oxide beans. Neat.
Thank you Robert!🥰
i thought that was a good video i like methods that you can use basic kitchen products that are easily available so that ticks all the boxs have been interested in rust removal that seems like a great idea thanks for sharing. The end result was impressive.
Thanks Rob, this cleaning solution is very useful. You can increase the "volume " of parts (to some extent), without changing the "motor", by adding some stiff spring(s) between your "vibrator" and the "container".
That does look easy, I usually use a water bath with some powdered pure lye mixed in to remove oil and grease, then I dip or brush the parts with muriatic acid to remove rust.
The problem is that muriatic acid has very intense fumes I have to wear a full face mask. It also strips any coating the parts have, so you may have to paint them.
People in "the states" can get 30% muriatic acid from Home Depot.
I'm moving on to abrasive media blasting or sand blasting and vibration stuff like you showed. Much less toxic
I am so glad to have stumbled onto your channel.
Brilliant!!
I am really surprised at the simplicity of the solution. The cost is really cheap. Evapo rust is just to expensive. Way to go Robert, you outdone yourself again.
Haha I Love your no Nonsense!!! Using easy accessible and safe cleaning agents!!!
Very Very Very Well Said

My son just gave me a small cast iron pot and lid that is very rusty, I immediately thought of this vdo. I hope you dont mind if I make my own vdo making and using a similar device. Of course I'll give full credit and links
Oh I saw the thumbnail and I came rushing in to view the video hoping it was Robert telling me how to get rust & oil out of a white t-shirt.
Still good video thanks Rob.
This a great method Rob! Love the idea of using a sander as a vibrator! With the vinegar/NaCl combination you are essentially cleaning with Hydrochoric Acid. LOL. In low concentrations of course but a strong acid none the less.
I can see why you posted a video, the results are great.
Rob I use coarse brown sugar (Just sugar no water) in a vibrating box like yours to clean carbs as it just washes off with hot water if it does get in any galleries and its non corrosive will have to try your cleaning fluid solution it certainly works
i use Drano, its caustic so i wear gloves and glasses, but it works super good on chrome, mix it with flour and water, brush it on, keep it damp, 15 minutes spray it off, chrome bumpers on old cars, bicycles,
Great information, thank you!
Just magic. A solution for those box of loose bits and pieces.
i think i might try this in my dryer
Good job! I never tried adding salt. I will try that next time. I heard this procedure works to remove mill scale from hot rolled steel to prep for welding.
Thank you.
Effectively what you're doing with salt and vinegar is making hydrochloric acid "in situ" which is why it cleans so well.
Love the idea. One concern... Orbital Sanders aren't meant for use in wet conditions, mains plus this solution will conduct very well.
Great video Rob Sir👍👍
This I have to try! Great tip with sanding machine!
Thanks Rob... I'm a metal detectorist and always looking for better ways to clean coins (in the most non aggresive way)... I'll give both the vibrating tub and the solution a good go!👍😁
Non aggressive try micro fibers in your vibrating tub it works great for cartridges for reloads
Really great recommendation. I will give this a try. Thank you for making this video.
Thanks for posting the video, I wrote it all down and will type it up for my shop notebook.
Thank you for your very intelligent natural solution, very original!
Tried a similar thing a while back I used the motor part of a cheap foodblender with an off balance shaft coupled to motor with plastic hose and large plastic container on bungees. For media I used slag from my plasma cutter cnc water tank worked great.
sander as a vibrator...
isn't as good as a vacuum pump, but works reasonably for dislodging bubbles when casting plaster of paris.
it might work with epoxy casting too.
Thank you...definitely something I need but don't take the time to think about.
Ingenious !
Now can you make an UltraSonic cleaner?
I figure one could use a small speaker attached to a metal tub, and adjust the frequency of the sound?
love your work Robert..great tips for the ordinary handiman
That's very useful, Robert. Would an ultrasonic cleaner have the same effect or does the vibratory cleaner work better? Thanks for your very useful video.
I believe ultrasonic cleaners, are supposed to create cavitation bubbles next to part being cleaned.. when cavitation bubbles collapse in effect they're like tiny explosions. Cavitation can erode very hard materials... so ultrasonic cleaning probably a harsher process.
I can see everybody's asking for ideas and if you look up ultrasonic dishwashers also jewelry cleaner machines friends of mine use it for carburetor carburetors to be disassemble and cleaned and it does work good doesn't harm the surface of anything many uses with that especially vaporizing or making a gas like a fog you could do a lot with a vaporizer ultrasonic look it up you'll find a lot of uses for it and it will fit this application
I use molasses/water mix and phosphoric acid/water mix to remove rust.
You have to do test pieces as they will disolve some netals but they work well, also the phosphoric acid leaves a protective coating.
The mixtures can be found on UA-cam videos.
I still prefer EvapoRust, but I remain astonished by how well molasses will remove rust.
👍 Nice one Rob....have no need for it at the mo BUTI must try to remember that I’ve seen you do it.....my memory is getting shocking 😞
Have you ever considered a project where you build and tune an ultrasonic generator from off the shelf or spare parts and other accessable technology? I've seen a few things on making ultrasonic generators and then trying to tune them to create a good focal range for the cavitation, but it looked really tricky.
I'd be curious to see what take you'd have on it. You seem to have a nack of making complex concept's and engineering seem easier to understand.
I eat salt & vinegar chips, I have rust free innards. As always great video.
Thank You for this tips, very helpful
Superb, love it, would never have thought of that.
Put your rusty stuff in a tub of water with Citric Acid, really cheap and sold in local shops. Cleans and de rusts in half hour!
Amazing thank you I have been dreading doing electrolysis. On some old screw jacks that I bought for my storage box. Now I have to figure out how to vibrate them. Maybe I can get my son to just stand and shake them for half an hour. LOL 🤣 😆
Thanks Rob, I was just trying to find a way to clean rust off of some sqare tubing I am using to build a bike rack out of.
Vinegar's great for "reinvigorating" files. For derusting, though, I always fall back to electrolytic removal, which doesn't touch the "good" steel.
That is fantastic!! Thank you for the upload!!
Great vid.. i have a aluminium bracket that has corroded.. this is going to clean it up nicely.. thanks Rob.. as always.. genius
Have you tried using cheese and onion?
Did you say "zirconium oxide cooking beans" ? Are they ceramic balls?
I think we call those "pie weights" in the U.S. It also works with tumbling, if you've a motor to turn your medium and a round container. Good project!
You might get by with the IPA and detergent and some water with the zirc beads.
Sodium carbonate is an excellent degreaser too.
thank you, cleaning up my alley. vinegar also has an expensive counter part 30% strength for weed killing. store bought stuff isnt strong enough for it. thanks. i like old stuff and sometimes you wonder if the condition will allow for good use.
White vinegar on it's own for 24 hrs. Just move the parts around with a little shake by hand 4 or 5 times. No need to vibrate or add anything else.
I like this one never really thought about it before.
Lol I can imagine next weekend some difficult questions between Robert and his Mrs. "Have you seen my baking beads?" Err well.... yes
Fantastic thanks for sharing. I have played around with a small ultrasonic cleaner for small parts and never found anything to work well. Just wondering if a scaled down version would work like using building sand. I'm going to have a go. Thanks again.
Many thanks for that.
Interesting.
Paint shaker and old gallon can , or does it build pressure? The mix
I tried electrolysis with water and soda crystals on an old axe and my car battery pulse charger and got great results. I wonder if that would be good in your machine mate
I request a talk show including J. May and R. Murray! Oh what a time i
it would be!
Two things I would try to keep as far away from iron metal as possible... normally. But yes I like the idea. Usually to remove rust I use phosphoric acid. Would Coke and salt work? Thinking the bubbles and phosphoric acid might work well?
I wonder how that 4-part liquid would do in a mechanic's parts washer? My older bro has one for home/garage use.
Could you replace washing-up liquid with liquid (clothes) washing machine detergent? Washing machine detergent is made to foam less
MR. SMITH GOOD EVENING FROM GREECE I SENT YOU A MESSAGE
YOU PROBABLY DIDN'T SEE IT ..... THE QUESTION IS THERE IS A RISK TO BREAK THE BATTERY ??
WHEN WE DO WELDING
AS YOU SHOW IN THE VIDEO WELDING VIDEO WITH BATTERY AND SALT WATER ???
They do ultrasound using just a loud speaker and a tin pot. Cheers John
Awesome video this will come in handy thanks Robert :)
Very informative. Thank you for sharing mate.
White Vinegar soak works magic. I never added salt.
@@SeeTheWholeTruth I chucked out thousands of dollars of tool that I could have saved using the stuff. Sad looking back.
I was never that impressed with vinegar, I get much better results with citric acid and as its a powder you can adjust the solution strength. You can buy it cheaply on ebay.
@@michaelwooding291 Vinegar is dirt cheap. $1.00 a gal here. Works quite well for me.
Jig saw vibrator. Great idea!
Sander vibrator
Totally Awesome!!!
I wonder if you could take a sander, turn it upside down, strap it, and have your vibration table. I'm assuming your target is to create a cheap version of an ultra sonic cleaner.
What are cooking beans?
I stuck some Velcro to a stainless tub, because my sander uses Velcro pads.
I mix oxalic acid [C.L.R. brand] and acetic acid [ 30% vinegar ]
If it's rust , I just soak overnight in vinegar and molassis and water .. does wonders
My vibration cleaner was the top of the workshops compressor, tub stuck on with Velcro every time it turned on to fill with air it cleaned
Very interesting and helpful. How do you dispose of the cleaning solution after you're done?
in this case its a mild acid and water, so down the drain, or just coffee filter it into a bucket to clean it up and reuse it over, throwing away perfectly good materials you use just wastes your money
@@paulmaydaynight9925 yes, but it’s an oily emulsion isn’t it? I’d think twice about pouring oil emulsion down the drain. What I do is degrease in some sort of organic solvent, then when it’s too oil laden, mix it with the old engine oil which my auto parts store takes for free and disposes of safely.
Would you mind explaining the chemical aspect of it?
Okej! Why get a vibrator? Then everybody get a washing machine reachable! Put the box in a reasoneble wight on the washing machine, and do the laundry! A Big Thanks for a smart solving on cleaning things!
Low tech is sometimes the best tech.
Quality
Could you please explain why you are using both an acid and a alkaline cleaning agent? Will they not just neutralize each other?
Mixing an acid and an alkali produces a fair bit of frothing and foaming.
@@hootsmin Does it not only produce salt?
Wonder if that 'liquid magic mix' would work in a ultrasinic cleaner?
sure, ultrasonic cleaning is just another higher frequency derivative of this
Another great vid from Robert. It's clear his solution works very well and I'll definately give it a go. Using my very limited knowledge of chemistry: reactive properties of an alkaline (eg salt) and acid (eg vinegar) when mixed in the right amounts cancelled each other out. (If correct) This would imply that mixing the two would reduce the cleaning effect of the solution. I think Rob's demonstration proves my posit is incorrect but I wonder how this works at a molecular level?
I would think that pea gravel will work instead of cooking beans or pie weights
Once I discovered electrolysis cleaning, Ive never looked back. Washing soda, water and a battery charger.
