Best way with the shot is to gravity feed it instead of trying to suck it up Rob.
I used a large bucket with a hole in the bottom and glued a funnel in the hole.
Hang the bucket in the air and hey presto " Gravity Feed "
now that is a super hand tip mate - cheers
Looks like you sand blasted your camera lens, 😋
Yea kinda fuzzy, eaaaa?
@@pulesjet It was fuzzy in the previous video as well.
@@seanlennon5044 just after he cleaned the stuff think it's a oily finger print
I was just about to say the same thing. It's blurry since the last video.
"winter may not be the best time to do this" Made me laugh out loud!!
LMAO 🤣 🤣
Looks like you've sand blasted your camera lens 😂
Great video! An idea to keep your sand bucket flowing; the vibration from the pressure washer might be enough...a little duct tape.
Funny story, While watching an industrial process of cutting a large pipe with a giant pressure washer unit and abrasive, I noticed a young lad sitting near the unit with a bag of sand on the ground in front of him. He was in charge of dipping the hose in the bag just enough to get some abrasive flowing, but not enough to clog it off. Struck me as odd, a big operation working in an oil refinery...and that was their solution.
BRILLIANT ROB!!!! I SWEAR you've helped me live the life of 2 or 3 avid tinkerers these past few years! i sometimes wait months or years to get the satisfaction of conclusions and working designs for my own projects, but rare is the video of yours that doesn't cover your conclusions / solutions / and results in the same video that proposed the thought exercise in the first place!! "COMPUTER!!!! ADD SAND BLASTER POWER WASHER TO MY TO DO LIST! lol
lol - you are a star mate and I count you as a friend
That's really impressive, had no idea this was even possible. I've used fine kiln dried sand in a regular sand blaster so would be interested if you try a future comparison. Thanks for learning the hard way so we don't have to 8)
I've been using kids play sand. Quite cheap to purchase.
Absolutely brilliant Rob thanks mate 👍.
Hello Robert, the ceramic tip is the most important part of the equation. Sand just glides on the surface of the ceramic as if it was sliding on a sphere bearing. Really makes a big difference fella for speed and free flow too. Peace.
Thanks for the tip, on the upside position. I have the same brand on 1200 psi. And noticed that. But my suction hose was bent by the hot weather. Thanks very much!
Totally fantastic video. Some great tips which will save everyone so many attempts and time.
Great stuff Rob. May be worth familiarizing with water pressure injuries they can be very nasty and difficult to treat. Hydroblast has an excellent section on their site.
This video should inspire someone to create an inexpensive see through collapsible open chamber system that filters the water and sand. Thus, giving the ability to easily collect & reuse the sand after drying, but also keeping the user safe from flying particles, while staying completely dry. A+ Rob.
Might you be able to fashion an enclosure that would act as both PPE and a trap for reclaiming the abrasives?
I've been watching this video with pleasure. This gentleman his amazing. Everyone suppose to explain everything step by step like him. 10 stars it's not enough... Thank you so much...for this video
Your laugh is infectious Robert!
Thanks for the tip! Great shop!
You could try the type of sharp sand used in children's sandpits might work well , the likes of Argos carry it in bags 15KG for £5.
Time to crush a bunch of old beer bottles down to sharp sand. 😎👍
Hey Boss, you made me laugh and watching your work is as always a learning experience (in a good way) keep it up. Cheers
There’s also a wet sand variation, I haven’t tried it but on my to do.
You’ve got a large smudge on your lens, centre left mid screen
Talking about cleaning..... the camera lens has a smudge on it lol 😆
Rob, your camera has a misty spot on the right in the last to shows.
Very cool. Impressive results also. Would never have thought of a pressure washer doing the job of a sand blaster.
it did work well mate
@@ThinkingandTinkering did better than just work well mate. That made it look near new
Nice tip. I’m going to try that on my rusted wheel rims later today.
From across the Pond, Brilliant Mate!
I have K7 model at home for years now but never knew u could just strap a blaster at it, today i even found out Kärcher offers its own kit for it.
My god i was looking in to buying super expencive air compressor just to blast stuff, while i had a 180bar powerwasher just sitting around all this time :D
Great Rob, soaked and frozen in the quest for knowledge, Stevenson and Brunel will be smiling!
I wasn't aware of that kit, thanks very much for this tip!! It just bumped "pressure washer" up a few notches on my "wish list"!! 🥰 Keep meaning to get one to properly clean my deck so I can stain it, but I'm always wondering "what would I do with it after that?" Now I have an answer!! 😋
lol - it is an awesome bit of kit if you have a lot of stuff to clean that is for sure
Yes, I struggled using a standard compressor with dry shot blasting., had to hook up a second compressor to get any kind of decent runtime. Did find proper kiln dry sand is very good - whilst its still dry, once it gets damp though its a pain for clogging.
I learnt quite a few things in this clip. Thanks.
Great advise. Thank you.
Often wondered if this idea would work. Clearly it does 👍. I would now be looking at the development of some type of enclosure and recovery system. 😁
Marvellous! You read my mind.
I want to thank you very much!
In a nutshell I did a Google shopping search for a sandblaster.
I saw in the search for a pressure washer sandblaster.
What? No way!!
I bought a sandblaster anyway but my air compressor isn't up to specs.
So, my Karcher K2 it is.
I researched UA-cam and Amazon and all showed 1/4 inch NPT connector. It's no wonder that most showed the sand feeding tube underneath as it looked awkward to hold upright.
Karcher? Bayonet connector. Perfect!!
Along with the sandblaster, I bought a face shield. I'm glad I didn't waste my money.
Pressure washer sandblaster is also known as ' dustless ' so I don't need to use covid19 face mask or buy a proper respirator.
Thanks again!
So what I tend to do when parts get this big is electric metal cleaning with Muriatic Acid and a 6v battery charger. It does the trick and no work needed. Just set it and walk away overnight.
cheers mate
@@ThinkingandTinkering Have to be careful with muriatic acid! The fumes will rust everything in your shop. I would avoid it. There are other solutions. I saw a chemist who used salt and acetic acid. (5% acetic acid diluted 5x. Is that .15%?) Some people just use washing soda.
He did mention that this part and the frame were getting too big for a convenient tub.
@@hubrisnaut Yes I know but you can even use baking soda as well. Rob being a chemist, I knew that he knew what muriatic acid is all about. I was just offering other ideas. That way we all don't get wet, LOL
@@jasonwitt8619 Cool. I was doing some investigations about what the best additives would be because I want to build a tank for the garage. I saw some horror stories of guys who did serious damage to their steel in their shops using muriatic acid.
What I find interesting is something I suspect about the electrolysis process, I think the rust is not so much being removed (large flakes are) but that the oxidation state of the iron is being changed. I suspect the "rust" (red) or FE(III) is being converted to FE(II) which is black in color. What this is doing is passivation, creating a stable state oxide barrier to oxygen. (if you notice, the parts have a black coating when removed from the tank. Also interesting is processes of this type of conversion are used in gun bluing. The hot and flume bluing methods use various salts, acids, bases and boiling water treatments. So, what I am wondering is if the same chemicals can be used in an electrolysis tank to good effect.
Cheers for this idea because it's just give me an idea of making a ventury dredge for gold! 💛👍
well now, this is about the only way I think I will do this for now on, as it lowers the lung dangers, I wonder how far we need to go before it cuts steel....👍thank you again Robert
the clean up was so much easier too mate
Perhaps make a way to hang a tank for the sand. So it is bottom fed. Just a suggestion. I don't know what you are working with. So it is just a thought. As always love the video. I been thinking this would work. You just proved me right. LOL
Hmmm maybe an inverted and plugged traffic cone would make a decent grit receptacle.
Full points for braving the miserable weather.
just a thought could you put some sort of conical shape in the bucket base and the sand would flow and concentrate at the base?
Using a layer or several layers of plastic wrap on your face shield will protect the shield and give you a layer/s that can be easily peeled off if it gets to dirty. Further overlapping multiple layers allows you to remove one at a time.
I've noticed there is a haze (center left), in a few videos of recent. I watched on several devices to verify it's not a burned in image on my screen, and the haze is the same on each.
Maybe it's nothing more than a little dirt on the camera lens or maybe it's worse.
Yup noticed too
I use a blow torch an a scraper for big things, tho it don't get rid of rust so this seems like a good idea
I've got an ancient compressor lying unloved in a shed. I'll dig it out & see if it works
Water and sand is more used for cutting and the finest and you can get is sharp sand used for filling the gaps in block paving
Brilliant video again!
Cheers from London 👍🏴🇬🇧
Robert, great videos, did you know you have some dirt on your camera lens?
oh and then came the face shield bit - laughed all over again!!
How about putting a cone in the bottom of the bucket so the dry sand flows down to to suction tube. Could you place the item to be cleaned in a tray so the sand stays in the tray and the water overflows so you can vollect the sand to be dried and reused.
this has helped a lot i have a motorcycle frame and a set of magnesium wheels to clean up and it looks like this will be the way to go as i dont realy want to by a compressor for 1 jpob but i do need a new pressure washer 😁😁😁😁
Was it maximus iron thumper that used crushed glass? I quite like his channel !
A pcp air gun compressor would work well. I'm wanting to buy one for mine to save my back pumping by hand.😂
Nice! I've seen before but forgotten and the blasting medium must be REALLY dry! I have a cheap but powerful blaster, finding compatible fittings will be my challenge!
Seeing those cleaned parts made me wonder about zing plating. Obviously small parts are easy with a plating bath and it's also possible to use something like a blow torch to do hot zinc coating. But what about bigger parts. Is there a chemical process, e.g. using a gel which could chemically zinc plate parts, similar to some of your copper plating processes?
I found your wand and brush electroplating videos, but for big things, that would take a loooong time! I was thinking of something purely chemical based, which would require a bit less effort on big items!
is there a way you would recommend to convert a air sand blaster to water?
Yeah that was great
Wonder if that would work with soda blasting, mmmm but a great idea Robert 😀
Will this blast paint off an external brick wall?
Build a plexiglass case to sandblast, from your monitor finds with a sifter at the bottom.
Just a thought.
Sand and water can't be mixed together before entering compressor?
Could one of these theoretically be used to propel a flammable liquid / jelly? Asking for a friend
Followed all your tips, but my new K5 just keeps pulsating when hooked up to sand blaster..😡 Any ideas..?
When you get excited, laugh, and talk you sound like Mr Magoo by James Backus.
"Oh Magoo! You've done it again." 😜
I was thinking a clear cone on the end of sprayer to stop the splash back ...You know the cone they put on dogs to stop them licking a wound !
lol - it got everywhere - so yeah I'll try that
how much medium did u use for that 30min job
I use the block paving sand, it is dry and sharp sand.
grind some old beer bottles? 😉👍
Nice! I've never thought about using a power washer like that! Do recommend including a n95/respirator with the PPE to minimize the risk of silicosis?
That's one advantage of using a water blaster. Wet sand, no problem, it's the fine dry dust blowing around. They control the dust problem in mines & construction sites by watering.
it wont hurt to wear a mask, but water keeps the vast majority if not all the silica dust out of the air.
And swimmers goggles. That sand is really good at getting around masks and safety glasses and just sucks to get out of your eyes.
You are having waaaay to much fun cleaning parts! I am surprised a a chemist doesn't go right to electrolysis to clean the parts like you blasted. Mmmmm a kiddie pool, a battery charger and...
......yes, those wading pools are good for many things .
@6:05 Why not put the wider bucket on top of your vibration cleaner? I bet that would make a dream team.
Hi Rob . With what chemicals do you treat it in order for the metal not to rust again
I paint it pretty quickly or wd40 followed by a light oil coating
Kenny Everett moment? Lol! I wonder if an inverted roadcone stuck in another with the top cut off would make a good silo? Did you manage to blast inside the component?;) Karachi cataract pressure blaster!;)
Use an old IBC with holes cut out for entry points as a blasting tank.
That's a good idea. And when you're done everything can be stored inside.
To be fair, my industrial grade pressurewasher would do a similar job with plain water when I turn the knob to full tilt.
Chushed glass is the way to go!
saving up my beer bottles 😎👍
Abrasive blasting with sands containing crystalline silica can cause serious or fatal respiratory disease ie silicosis
What is over your windows in the video?
A 2 litre plastic Coke bottle with the bottom cut out and fitted over the lance will help with the blow back issue to a certain degree.
Something has happened to your camera lens after miracle cleaning video
it would have been nice if you had a controlled area and just did the pressure washer with water only, then add the medium to it
What is the psi on your sand blaster?
140
May I know the psi of your power washer?
The kratcher medium is too course to be used with the sand blasting kit I got from Amazon. I need to have a look at it to see if I can make the nozzle hole larger.
I have already tried it and it worked fine for me mate
I'd be interested in seeing a comparison to just water
I used the same jet washer to clean the frame in a cleaning video in the ev series so you can see the comparison there mate
OMG I brought this a year ago and it still sits in its packet. Might be the cheaper one but I'll check later. I have an addictive personality and tools are one of my go to places. My second hho failed because the container seal was not strong enough 😔 😪. I might gaffa tape it and try again
lol - dig it out mate!
@@ThinkingandTinkering I checked late last night and it looks like it has the screw too. I woke up to an inch of water in my workshop due to the snow Saturday morning so its pushed me back a couple of days while I have been clearing up
Hi Robert, I’m about to enjoy this video. But I came here to ask you a question. I can not ask anyone else, who I believe would actually know the answer.
Would having a decent amount of transformers (10+), be at any real benefit while building anything useful?
(They are large transformers, I scraped from numerous APC UPS battery back ups)
Thanks!
TO LUKE, you freaking rock dude!
almost always, there's a thing to repurpose into depends on your skills and tools.
Can u try baking soda
i use block paving sand
try crushed bear bottles? 😉👍
Kiln-dried play pit sand approx £4.00 per bag.
Next project.. making a dry suit from old Wellington boots.
hey Rob, your video is a bit blurry/cloudy in the middle, might want to check/clean the camera lens.
now I'm going to have make a 12 or 20 volt powered one. And save and pulverize my walnut shells to use as a medium.
and beer bottles.
if possible increasing the flow rate of sand might do a quicker job
....... Not quite a venturi effect when the pressure washer picks up the sand,, cos the pressure from a venturi shaped intake will remain greater than atmospheric pressure for high pressure water flow. Of course as a chemist you're already familiar with the vacuum pump based on the entrainment principal used in labs .Small spray particles of fast moving water absorb and whisk away the molecules of air creating a pressure drop or vacuum . High pressure steam works too ,, I wasn't thinking for cleaning purposes but who knows ,, , there's a refrigeration process based on high pressure steam flow creating the vacuum that causes the boiling of water at low temperature to provide refrigeration . Strangely enough Prof Julius Sumner Miller never covered it in his famous 1960s lectures and I never learned of the principal till my mud forties although I was always wondering about that breeze of air when using a garden hose at fine mist spray adjustment and shower curtain drawn inwards when shower is turned on ,,my eureka moment .
called slurry blasting we used to clean inside chemical tankers . With a truck engine and pump needed two of use one standing and holding behind other wise it would knock u on your arse lol
Reminds of old guy “don’t jet wash dog s.....”
I been a sandblaster for 27 years environmental laws are strick in california don't know if the laws are that strick in Great Brittan no open air sandblasting allowed have to have forced air supply helmet if done long enough without safe guards you will get sick also good ideal hearing protection most shops have gone to wet sandblasting to get around the laws
it does seem a way around it that's for sure - I won't be doing a ton of it mate - but every now and then it is certainly useful
Look like it took U hours to sand blast it mate.
I think your camera lens needs some cleaning. Or maybe it is light glaring at it.
FYI I was playing with coils and magnets to a volt meter. Had Turkey feather laying near by so I brushed the coil with it. Short story ....... you should try it!🙄
i have lots of stuff you could give a go but people get bent if you talk about it instead of trying it
@@ambersmith6517 I was charging a batery by hand just rubbing the feather accross a coil. Coil was junk and light. It produced more than the magnets. The feather also became magnetic. Only the negative was connected to the coil the positive had no connection to the coil.
I started a search and found a paper talking about feathers being dielectric transponders. Needs more investigation.
Get your cup of coffee :)
