Portal 2 - Unused Purple "Adhesion" Gel

- The gel actually is purple! The texture is missing while it's flowing, yes, but not when it's applied to a surface. Just plain old purple on the floor and walls.
This video shows the purple "sticky" or "adhesion" gel I found on accident in the Portal 2 authoring tools. It turns out that the purple gel was initially going to behave like the blue stick paint in Tag: The Power of Paint (free download link below), the game off of which Portal 2's gel mechanics are based.

The adhesion gel would have been in the game along with the repulsion, propulsion, and conversion gels in Portal 2 now. But some play testers got too disoriented when they had to think with portals while walking on walls and ceilings, so Valve ended up removing the gel before it was completed.
As this video demonstrates however, the incomplete adhesion gel still exists deep in the game's files. The purple blob texture is missing, as indicated by the black spots in the blobs, but the brush applied gel texture still renders properly as purple. Although now, in the Peer Review DLC update, it was replaced with a new white gel that has all of the properties of this adhesion gel, in addition to reflecting lasers like a mirror. Because Valve removed this gel, it doesn't work quite right anymore. It doesn't let you walk on walls or ceilings. It just has a few remaining properties when interacting with propulsion gel. Objects coated in adhesion gel (which don't have a purple texture, but they still can be coated) won't slide along propulsion gel on the ground. Similarly, objects coated in propulsion gel won't slide along adhesion gel on the ground.
But it turns out Omnicoder actually did make it fully functional! Hopefully he will release it as a .vpk or something in the near future. See the video below.

"Too disorienting"? Ever play the game Prey? You had gravity-shifting devices, wallwalks, a spirit world, portals, and things trying to kill you. That's disorienting...
Or "Battlecruiser" series from the 3000AD. Managing the whole ship, including crew, reactor, weapons, engines, special systems and so on - that's really complicated too!

...if it was developed to such a stage where playtesters were able to interact with it, your statement about it being cut off from development being the reason behind it not working - is false. It needed to have worked at some point to make the playtesters nauseous, meaning valve never released functionality scripts for it in the final game
A year late to replying, but it did have functionality initially. That functionality was disabled afterwards. Remember, like every other Valve game, Portal 2 went through a lot of different changes and versions during its development. Plenty of broken things remain in the code from early versions.
We now know from the p2ce developers that the remaining sticky gel code was pretty buggy
It was likely just written over, why leave something with no plans to be used in the game?
Probably why it was as broken as it is.

There actually IS 4 gels. The Bounce Gel, The Speed Gel, The Portal Surface Gel, and the Clear Gel.

read the discription it was purple when it hit the ground and it wasn't missing textures it was only missing textures when it was flowing

there was one of those information things in developer commentary mode explaining that
this woulda been great, like for instance: a chamber with an exit on the roof. no places you can gain velocity from to shoot up to it but the gel lets you get to it

@BOB74j I know, they removed it's properties, but i read somewhere that white gel was going to be adhesion, That they replaced with conversion later. But it does make more sense for it to be white

All you have to to is aim for a top of a wall, and you can walk on the roof. It's walking on the ceiling. Aim for a wall, and there we go.
i thought this would be a death gel, that can press buttons, to maybe putting to heavy in editor and make a timer, every time the gel falls in the button you go trough a laser that deactivates

@Kckeller Oh but they did mention that there was another type of gel they didn't use in the game. Maybe no purple, I don't know... But definetly this was a spot for another type of gel.

It was going to be the jumo gel think but they probably decided to remove it and make it blue.

theres also another gel that reflects lazers it was fully implemented and they added a map to the game for it but removed it because it would make the players feel stupid because of all the things they'd have to account for during the test chambers, sombody put thebreflection map on the steam workshop

as i ever played portal 1 the first time using portals was disorienting for me and they never removed portals from portal :D
The purple gel when fixed spawns an oracle turret (or maybe a normal turret with a chance of it being an oracle)

if you look carefully or freeze the frame, you see black bits with the purple bits.
@inspectertaz Portal surfaces require moon dust, which conversion gel contains, but white paint does not. Hope this cleared it up!

Valve should've just had it have its own testing chambers, with a warning on them before you open them up. So much wasted potential, walking through portals while sticking to the wall would've been the coolest thing ever!!
