Wikipedia: Initially, Valve planned to exclude portals from Portal 2. For five months, they focused on a gameplay mechanic called "F-Stop"; Valve did not discuss the specifics of the idea as they may use it in a future game. Though the playtesters liked F-Stop, they expressed disappointment at the omission of portals. Following a report in Kotaku about some leaked plot elements, Newell directed the team to reconsider.

This beta had a lot of Portal 2007 stuff leftover, notice how there's the Portal 1 Holding and walking animation for the portal gun and how the Curiosity core is being used as a place-holder
It looks like it was using portal 1/hl2 version of source instead of the l4d one. So that's probably why, although they did ended up with a somewhat similar crosshair to portal 2's rather than the more useful portal 1 crosshair
I was darn too sure Spongebob's theme song would begin playing at the start

So the “palm beach” beta intro got distilled to being palm tree wallpaper in the aperture motel shipping container.
that intro was so cool.
@@sygos It kind of lived on in the final game, like they said, as a wallpaper. And also it pretty much got moved to the GladOS kidnap scene just before the core transfer.
Not gonna lie the suction air chamber would have been a really cool idea and concept hope they add it in portal 3 if they make one
well it seems that people have already remade it in the custom chambers so you can try those, it _is_ very cool

From what i've researched on the Internet F-Stop was a Portal 1 Prequel set in Aperture Science sometime in the early 1980s at the time the game took place Cave Johnson had just been uploaded into a supercomputer inside the facility and was to be the main antagonist of the game. the games testing element would involve a handheld camera and robotic mannequins being observed by human scientists, As the game progressed the test subject would encounter a giant chicken which judging by some textures were the result of Apertures staff taking a nab at bioengineering animals to solve world hunger. Towards the middle point of the game Cave would begin to dread his existence in this new computer body and blame his corporation for doing this to him. It's not known what the games climax would entail but my hunch is the player would engage Cave Johnson in combat in a battle similar to portal 1 but with the camera device they would destroy him and save the Aperture Science staff from the Robotic mannequins which Cave seemingly "Corrupted" ((My evidence for this is an animation reel found to be made by one of Valves animation people which shows one of these manaquins doing four walking animations.)) The portal 1 beta portal gun was also supposed to cameo being used by one of these robotic mannequins in a test chamber when the player was to explore Apertures offices and interact with some human scientists. My guess is at this point in development GLaDOS was constructed after Cave was destroyed by the F-Stop protagonist to replace him presumably to take out the "Human" factor of the AI and make it more rational and logic based.

If you haven’t played Portal Stories Mel before, then you should. It’s the closest thing to Portal 3 and it includes a decent bit of cut lore and content from portal 2 in a new and cool setting

Realized a few things from the first game are here, shading is (a little) incomplete, and the voice acting for wheatley, which i like even if it doesn’t match. also someone needs to make a recreation, or give a download for the beta

i love how theres tons of half life 2 HEV low ammunition audio at the relaxation vault cutscene
I think fstop might have been that thing in those games where it fucks with your perspective and things get bigger as they come closer and smaller as they go farther

Zorklis F-stop seems to be a fourth dimensional manipulator. Notice how the states of the objects changed when the F-stop was activated? These objects could be fourth dimensional objects sliding into three dimensional space and as such, change form.
Alternatively, F-stop could just be an object transformer. In photography, f-stop is a measure of how large a camera’s aperture is. Change the f-stop, and the composition changes too-it’s most prominent when dealing with lighting effects on the subject.

@@pxlpkr - they were referring to normal gameplay like when GLaDOS was lowering the ceiling for us. There’s indeed a command that allows you to shoot portals on *_any_* moving surface. I don’t remember what it was tho but I think it’s in Valve’s site.

in the beta, the moon ending would be an easter egg, but the normal ending was too basic to put in final game

Woow, looks like Aperture tag developers were inspired by beta Portal 2. They used a lot of stuff from there.

It was just a placeholder. It’s one of the American developers doing an accent that they put in before they processed the actual lines.
Those suck tubes looked like they would have been a really cool mechanic.

the devs were too lazy to make the voice acting so far so they just made a text to speech as the announcer
Wheatley sounds more British than he is in the actual game.
I still hate that they didn’t go with the insane, skinned GLaDOS because it makes more sense with the portal 1 defying gravity and exploding ending.
I also just think a more crazy and insane GLaDOS would have more Sci-fi horror potential that was definitely present in the first game.
I can not tell how unready and sketchy all this looks...
